I'm with you on the tears brother. Playing over this is probably the closest thing one can do to really connect with the Great man Frank! What a fucking legend.
Thanks very much for uploading this and for providing the detail of the mode to play over it.I love FZ's work and his solo on the best band you never heard over this track is one of my favourites . I've been having so much fun playing over this , thank you so much!
The nice thing about this track is that I not feel bound to a certain key while playing. A Dorian works perfectly fine but A minor or Phrygian or variations on those keys can add a great deal.
True! I've also been using CM7, E7 and GM7 arpeggios as substitutions and so C Lydian and the Hirojoshi mode (B, C, E, F#, G) are working really well. I've been especially milking the F# note (probably too much, lols). Am, Bm and Em pentatonic work, and D dominant 7 pentatonic, I call it the "Jeff Beck" scale (D, F#, G, A, C).
This is fantastic, I will have to show the guys in the band this. I hear so much in this, but I am also hearing a bit of Pink Floyd's, "live at Pompeii", amongst others.. Thank you so much for posting this.
I have played so well that I want to thank you for this awesome back track. Great base to allow guitarists like me to offer their best (even if not like Zappa the Master...) Thank you mate
It's been really fun jamming to. I bet you'd have a blast. You can take it back up any time you like of course. No doubt the memories are still there from your head and heart, to your ears and hands (and it's been done without the hands).
This one inspired me to record my own version using Yamaha psrs670 through a Tascam Portastudio. Use it for solo gigs. Zappa style tunes are getting popular here on Big Island. I'm old as shit, by the way!
im just an average player on the guitar, but i love this track to go balistic on. how i would like to get something like rat tomago. but thats just dreams 8) miss you Frank
Hey man, I recorded a guitar solo over it and put it on soundcloud. If I don't have permission I'll remove it. Thought I'd do the right thing and tell you about it even if its like 8 years later
Hi Maxime. No problem. I don‘t own any rights for this track. I checked your solo on soundcloud. Nice, you went for the full 16 minutes, that is tough. Also nice choice of thumbnail :)
@@oliver_koch Ah thanks for taking the time to check it out. Ye it was hard to not stay too repetitive over 16 or so minutes, but I did my best to change things up and be creative. First and last take, quite proud of that, I was in good guitar shape at the time. I'm not sure I could pull that off today!
It’s an incredible track and sounds easy. It’s kind of blues feel to it too. Zappa plays a fretless guitar on the studio version. Isn’t there a chord change in it too?
A whole lot of pentatonic scales exist within the A dorian mode. I was just commenting to someone else about the ones I was using: _"I've also been using CM7, E7 and GM7 arpeggios as substitutions and so C Lydian and the Hirojoshi mode (B, C, E, F#, G) are working really well. I've been especially milking the F# note (probably too much, lols). Am, Bm and Em pentatonic work, and D dominant 7 pentatonic, I call it the "Jeff Beck" scale (D, F#, G, A, C)."_ The A, B, and D pentatonic scales you know, but if you don't already know them, try learning the Hirojoshi mode and the "Jeff Beck" scale I typed the notes down for. Definitely learn A dorian though, like Charlie suggests. It's just A pentatonic and add the F# and B notes. There's a literal ton of tunes in that key, from Van Halen to Zappa and before and beyond. I suggest searching "A dorian fret graph" and clicking "image" and find one that will teach you the fifth fret position first, since that's the "home box" A pentatonic. [Fair trigger warning for any GQP people who may be reading].. I would link it for you, but reichwingtube hates leftist politics (in the U.S. _center-right_ is considered _"leftist"_ lols), so instead of dealing with all of the actual dangerous fascism on the site, they just punish all of us good and responsible people too.
***** "Part one" is the actual song up to where the solo would come in, with "Theme From 'Bonanza'" and "Lonesome Cowboy Burt" performed before the tune comes back in for Zappa's solo.
I'm not about to say who is better, I love both, but then even that is just an opinion. It is true that Zappa was leagues ahead as far as music theory and complexity go. That said, I still wouldn't say for instance that Frank was a "better" guitarist than David, but also wouldn't agree the distance is not so great. In some ways Pink Floyd could be considered to be "light years ahead". Theory and complexity are not intrinsic to great works of art. This has been proven time and time again. But neither are basics and simplicity the only way to feel art. By thinking that, one intrinsically limits what they are willing to feel, and anything limiting feel, does automatically limit ones expressiveness, and art *is* expression.

Utterly brilliant backing track!

Great track. Thanks for uploading. Had much fun with it. IMHO it's the D-diatonic shape positioned to A Dorian 🤓

Does anyone know why A minor pentatonic works? Is the relative minor based off of the mode A and not the G major scale?
Hi! The R b3 p4 p5 b7 in the minor pentatonic are also in the A Dorian mode, so nothing will be out of place!
Only difference between A minor scale (which the pentatonic is then cut down to) and A Dorian scale is one note, so both are ideal.

Not so strangely, this could also be a backing track for a few Pink Floyd songs. The distance between Zappa and Floyd is not that great.
in places but feel like Zappa did stuff nobody could get near - can't imagine any other band nailing the breaks from St alphonso for example...
actually the distance is great - Zappa was a quadrillion light years ahead of Floyd
U dont know zappa
Exactly, this guy has no clue about Zappa
I'm not about to say who is better, I love both, but then even that is just an opinion. It is true that Zappa was leagues ahead as far as music theory and complexity go.
