The most important thing I tell younger guitar players or beginners is always have fun with it. It's gotta be fun, and to "practice" just put on your favorite albums and jam with them. Go as far as you want to go but that really is the most enjoyable way to improve without getting discouraged.

Great compilation of interviews. This might expose my lack of cool, but I'd never heard of Shawn Lane before. Went and had a listen to the Tri-Tone Fascination and loved it! I might disagree with the lacking in self doubt comment at the end, I suspect every now and again each of those guys has(or had, rip) a hard time getting out of bed in the morning or a rough day wondering what the point of it all is, but I'll agree, they keep going hard and coming back to the one thing that makes the most sense and the most joy, and that's music, baby! Thanks to the temple for putting it together and for the choice track at the end, nice playing.

fits that. He was a guitarist's guitarist. I never understood why mostly rock players get the recognition
on "best" lists, there are giants like Django, Segovia, Lenny Breau, Shawn, Les Paul,, who certainly aren't underrated in terms of ability but less well known. Shawn Lane was a genius on the guitar and equally gifted on the piano.

I'm surprised that GG is so into Yngwie Malmsteen because, to my ears, Yngwie is the very definition of soulless technique, whereas GG.....well, he means everything he plays and can play anything he wants to with passion, imagination and enormous technical prowess.
But that's the point he was trying to make: there is no "bad" music; only individual taste. You like what you like, and you dislike what you don't like.
It's just that.....I don't get how such a passionate guy could be so into the music of someone who only plays fast to play fast. 😂

He was a big fan of all the “Als” and “Steves” - Al DiMeola, Alex Lifeson, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Steve Morse and Steve Howe.

Les Paul, Hendrix and Atkins put in front of Holdsworth.
That is a very interesting choice. I couldn't disagree with that more.
2 of those played pentatonics their whole life and the other one mixed in few country licks.
They aren't even playing the same instrument as Holdsworth.

Holdsworth was to be in the 1st video in fact , I just forgot, yet I absolutely love his playing , Without Hendrix or Les Paul there would be no Holdsworth, No Doubt he is the superior Player but the Trail blazers were them , although I myself prefer Holdsworth simply a world class player and he himself became a trailblazer but without the ones before he might not have been.. but yeah he was to be in the 1st video my mistake .Thanks Petar

@@theguitartemplepriest I made that comment about Guthrie's top 3. I don't see any evidence for any of them to have been an influence on Holdsworth. Holdsworth had 2 types of influences, 19-20 century classical music and jazz.

Think you need to listen to Les Paul and Atkins again. They got augmented, diminished, chromaticism etc etc up the ass. Holdsworth is one of a kind but don't ever sell those other two short.

Shawn lane wipe the floor with their head. Guthrie is just overrated wannabe. Not much to say about his debut and song literally has no taste and color.

    • @theguitartemplepriest

Yes indeed Shawn Lane is world class Love him as well, To Prove Guthrie Is NOT Overrated nor a Want to be, One must ( Play what he does ) then One would find out very quick He is Brilliant, I do appreciate Your opinion of course, It is just a Point and or counterpoint ( Music is a Flavor ) and He just might not be your flavor,
( Technically ) he is an Olympic gymnast, On the other hand
( If you like David Gilmore ) Steve Vai wont satisfy , If whatever music you listen to creates ( Emotion ) I'd say the Artist has done his job, well have a great day & thanks for viewing, Appreciated .
