Yeah. There are definitely guitarists who are as fast as him, or as creative as him, or as musical as him. Maybe even slightly more so in each category. But nobody has it all the way he did. It’s one thing to say “Yeah? Well my favourite boomer guitarist is more musical.” Well he’s probably only barely more musical than Shawn if at all. Or maybe it’s “Yeah, but my favourite shred lord is the fastest.” Maybe, but only slightly faster than Shawn if at all. He was a true genius. It’s a tragedy for all mankind that there are almost no good quality recordings of him.

"He's the most terrifying guy of all" - Paul Gilbert, referring to Shawn Lane, as a guitarist - in response to a question about Shawn in a Clinic Paul was doing.
At the time Paul had a monthly column in Guitar Player called "Terrifying Guitar 101".
    Guthrie Govan said of him:
"... unbelievable, unbelievable mind that wasn't just a guy who practiced a lot of being fast he had this huge brain and there's big warm heart and the special music came out of him he'll be missed really, ... you can play ridiculously fast but still playing interesting note sounds ... [he] transcended the guitar there will never be another Shawn ...
    Andy Timmons said:
"I'm very fortunate to have got to know Shawn pretty well ... he's easily the most brilliant person I've ever met as far as if I've ever met a genius since shortly there's no doubt about it; ... his level of intellect and knowledge of so many subjects but obviously musical, ... he knew as much about classical as he did about pop and rock and he could play as well on guitars he could on every other instrument you put him, on the drums and the keyboards it was insane ... way far ahead of most of us"
And as @ButterBall mentioned of Buckethead's comment on Shawn, he also said:
"... it's beyond guitar from outer space, I don't know, he's probably the most incredible musician I've ever seen or heard, it's beyond what I even can understand, but I got to hang around him a few times and he was like, he took so much information, and I've never seen anything like that like where he could just read many books in a day and yep just like a memory where he could remember everything and wow he is an insane inspiration"
A true genius and I think a polymath. He could literally sign two autographs at once using left and right hands without a problem. He read so many books on every subject and retained it and understood it.

And to think that he was already playing and flowing with this technique at 16, claiming to be defined in the technique at 14... everything the most over the years was creativity.

  • @rjc7289

It's been said that no matter how good you are on guitar, or any instrument for that matter, there's always a boatload of people out there who can out-shred you. So my question is, when Shawn was alive, who could've possibly out-shredded him? He may very well have been the absolute pinnacle of technical virtuosity. Even now, years after he's gone, there's nobody I know of who can play as insanely fast and precisely as he did. Some players come close, like Rusty Cooley and Jeff Loomis, but Shawn definitely threw down the gauntlet as far as shredding goes. Nobody to this day has raised the bar higher, and that will be his enduring legacy for a long time to come!

kind of like he took the legato shred of Holdsworth and the melodic sense of Eric Johnson and crazy speed of Art Tatem runs and the insane picking speed of Paco and McLaughlin and blended it all up with a rock sensibility on top.

"Epilogue for Lisa" - beautiful stuff! Interesting that it's very Jeff Beck. Shawn can technically leave Beck for dead yet unlike Beck, you don't get that instant "I know who this is!" hit you do when you do after just hearing two notes of JB!

@@walthompson8210Bad if you're in close proximity to the offending sound. People always use that as a basis for judging someone's ability. The point is, I can hear a lousy guitarist and identify him by a few bad notes or I can hear a great guitarist and recognize him by a few good notes. The ability to quickly indentify one's playing doesn't have anything to do with whether they are good or bad.
