It seems like my generation has been so lucky to have experienced quite a few virtuosos on guitar. We had a good 50 year run on players like Shawn, Eddie, Randy Rhodes, Lukather, Carlton etc.
there's so much depth in it, right? there's prob'ly a lotta comedy, dramedy, and yeah, other stuff as well, in what he did: it's almost like, the actual-guitar-playing, was the least-of-it, right?
To this day, Shawn's playing...as far as I'm concerned...is completely "out there". He had EVERYTHING when it comes to playing guitar. Melody, rhythm, tone, creativity, technique (beyond understanding) and absolutely brilliant dynamics. All of it. Shawn's. Powers of Ten is one of the most brilliant albums ever. RIP buddy!
Yeah. There are definitely guitarists who are as fast as him, or as creative as him, or as musical as him. Maybe even slightly more so in each category. But nobody has it all the way he did. It’s one thing to say “Yeah? Well my favourite boomer guitarist is more musical.” Well he’s probably only barely more musical than Shawn if at all. Or maybe it’s “Yeah, but my favourite shred lord is the fastest.” Maybe, but only slightly faster than Shawn if at all. He was a true genius. It’s a tragedy for all mankind that there are almost no good quality recordings of him.

"He's the most terrifying guy of all" - Paul Gilbert, referring to Shawn Lane, as a guitarist - in response to a question about Shawn in a Clinic Paul was doing. At the time Paul had a monthly column in Guitar Player called "Terrifying Guitar 101". Guthrie Govan said of him: "... unbelievable, unbelievable mind that wasn't just a guy who practiced a lot of being fast he had this huge brain and there's big warm heart and the special music came out of him he'll be missed really, ... you can play ridiculously fast but still playing interesting note sounds ... He could literally sign two autographs at once using left and right hands without a problem. He read so many books on every subject and retained it and understood it.
