- The GOAT ... What an absolute mine field when it comes to guitar playing. Styles, techniques, legacy etc. how do you even go about defining a guitar GOAT.
Guthrie, while not someone you'd recognise on the street, could be considered the GOAT. His stylebending, emotion, feel, phrasing, technique, repertoire and recognition certainly put him up in the clouds when it comes to the top players on the planet currently.
It's not up to me to decide who the GOAT is, but it could be up to you ... head over to the community section below to decide if Guthrie has true GOAT status.

Guthrie is the most versatile guitar player in the world, he can play anything he wants, and also make it interesting. Such a genius.
But that makes him generic, though skilled. He lacks his voice. He plays in many styles of many others.
Indeed, it does well said John.
The man is wizard a encyclopedia of music.
@@johnp.johnson1541 I don't buy this at all. Maybe you just don't hear it, but Guthrie for sure has his own style!
@@ATX0705 OK. And? Even if so, which is not apparent in the works I have heard from him, he is far from the greatest.
That’s just insane level of greatness, melodic, very soul filled, harmonically interesting, incredible speed, super clean, Super fast, just incredible!!!
After hearing Guthrie many guitar players just say"no Im not really a guitar player" 🤣
Lifetime of guitar here (I'm 65, started at 7, made a career of it, etc.), and Guthrie's the best player I've ever heard. Elite technique, gorgeous artistry and emotion, enormous versatility...
...and he is a very humble and humorous person. This is a simple human. A rare kind of artist...
I have known all of these many many years ago. I knew instantly that he is beyond phenomenal. Yes he is the GOAT.
THE GOAT OF GOATS.
I AM A MASSIVE, MASSIVE MR.GUTHRIE GOVAN FAN.. I AM DEVOTED AND DEDICATED FAN TO UNCLE~MR.GUTHRIE GOVAN..MY FAVORITE PORTION OF THIS VIDEO MONTAGE IS PRETTY MUCH AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THIS VIDEO.. WHERE HE IS PLAYING A CAPARISON GUITAR.. EXCELLENT JOB UPLOADING THIS VIDEO..THANK YOU.
As an improvisaionalist, no one better.
The majority of his recorded music is WRITTEN not improvised, sure he improvised like nobody else but listen to the two tskes of Regret #9 and interview with Bryan Beller about Seeetwater solo - every note and bend written.. agreed but 60^ so
Peace
@@pm9928 agree but all the above videos are improvised
Yeah. He's the GOAT probably. Off to listen to Drive Home solo again.
That clip at 4:53… Just mind blowing playing… GOAT… yeah…
It always amazes me how these guys never miss a freaking note
For me, what makes the difference for Govan is that his playing is HOT. No matter the style, he always brings some fire.
It’s G.O.A.T.HRIE! Nuff said! 💯🎸🔥❤️
Spectacular player to actually watch and listen, no matter what he plays. Watching his playing is like a full lesson.❤👌👍🤘
Technique, style, feel, shred, bend, in any genre… he does it all so effortlessly… Guthrie is a 10th degree fret master, i.e. Da GOAT!
Feel? lol He plays too fast to 'feel'. He shreds. Just like a million other guitarists.
@@stephencampbell2018 bruh
@@stephencampbell2018 Have you even listened to his guest solos on steven Wilson's albums they're the most iconic guitar solos and sound out of this world.
IMHO, he's the best ever.
imo unquestionably yes. there are some very talented youngsters who may surpass him eventually. and there are obviously lots of other fantastic established guitarists, but none that have the same oneness with the instrument, again, imo. his melodic fluidity, range, feel, technique, improvisational spark and creativity... it's _all_ there. most of the other greats have some of those but rarely, if ever, all of them, and not to the same elevated level.
that petrucci lineup was one of the first clips i'd seen of him and it still blows my mind. so, damn musical.
He’s definitely one of them.
Yes he is. And also so down to earth and humble.
wow, tosin abasi's reaction is really heartwarming to see :-D (thanks for the arrows ;-) )
Truly beyond a guitar god awesome shredding a masterpiece jam those riffs are totally amazing🥰
Awesome vid,cheers.
Thanks 👍
Technical shredding yes ! But always seems fast flurry of notes does he play anything simple acoustic mellow. More just for the song? BUCKETHEAD!!!!!!
He can be whatever he wants to be when holding a guitar....he is a void that fills with inspiration. No self....Guthrie is tuned to Cosmos...he becomes one with the Universe... Face melters is a wonderfull channel...
Poetic! 😎
Versatile and a really nice guy too.
I'm a gigantic fan of Guthrie and certainly no comparison is ever warranted I just believe that Max Ostro is guitar demi God and the future of all guitar brilliance and extremes as well ; serious props to Guthrie though ; NO DOUBT !!!9!!!
YES he is !!! 🤘 absolutly great !
Each time I click on this channel I stagger away with my face melted. Now I'm asked what I think when I'm just trying to get a comb through my eyebrows and find my earlobes, and wondering how to get there from here? 🙏
Hope your face is healing 😳
He is, the god of guitar.
For sure. The way GG improvises and his sheer depth of versatility is simply outstanding. Saw him live last Friday and his skills are no hype. Every time he played he moves me and I’m a drummer😀👍 Best bit is he’s so humble a sign of greatness in its own right.
Guthrie is the next step in human evolution. He has more musical phrases than I have English
He also has superior English
He is fantastic as both a player and a person. I love it when he says that "MUSIC IS NOT A CONTEST"! It´s not bodybuilding, for crying out loud....
I have no doubts about it ! Dude has a complete domain over his instrument and his name is synonymous of obliteration. He became GOD on his own DAMN RIGHT !
I don’t know why everybody says he’s the goat ?? Have you seen a goat once in your life… not the same haircut at all. 😂 about Guthrie’s playing someone doubt this man is one of the greatest ever ??
You should hear Guthrie play bass! Amazing!
It depends on what aspect of music I guess. If it's a question of skill on skill then I don't think many can dispute that Guthrie is indeed one of if not the best of all time. But if it is song writing, catchy riffs, important albums/bands etc then no there are many players more deserving.
60% agree
Hex writes all his stuff
Remember he started out writing tabs for magazines... his discipline can only be appreciated having listened to Aristocrats albums 100 200 times then see him live (I have seen every London gig bar one) he is a superb composer...
peace
Guthrie Goatvan
I love his mouth movements like he’s lip syncing the sounds his guitar is making lol
That one, drinking coffee while shredding wildly on his guitar was enough to put my guitar for sale ! Anyway here interested ?
He's not just the GOAT! He's the whole damn zoo!
Nah. Shawn Lane is the GOAT.
@@sageantone7291 nah, Guthrie is more tasteful
farm*
❤❤❤ 😂😂😂😂
Technically he may be one of the GOATs
Check out Italy’s Matteo Mancusco. Only 26, and plays like he’s played for 40 years.
His awesome, doesn't quite have the expression or versatility of Guthrie yet.
He is Living Legend...
mind boggling 😳
Yes!
Yes, next question
He is certainly the GOAT
The best and few people realize that he invented tidal pools and the spatula
Guthrie is def the best guitar player alive. The only one that has been at his level is Shawn Lane.
Kind of reminds me of a mix of Steve Vai and Vinnie Moore. He's definitely amazing, but I'd say the most impressive player I've heard is Scotty Anderson.
What is the song that he plays in clip 8
where is clip 3 from???
The clip at 2.19. Imagine if Shawn Lane was there..
its splitting the finest of hairs talking about the goat of guitar between guthrie, tommy emmanuel and eric johnson. doubtless guthrie can do a damn fine impression of the latter two!
Dudes a freak. We all try to play parts of riffs that improves on a nightly basis. He’s Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen’s love child. Feel free to throw your one hero’s in here.
He stands upon the shoulders of all the wicked players that came before him, and soon enough he'll be looking up at another player. GOAT for now. Just don't say 'Matteo' around him. I hear he begins to shake uncontrollably.
Max Ostro is the guitarist that I can’t stop listening to and I discovered Guthrie over a decade ago and Matteo a couple months before Max. Once I went Max, I finds it hard to go bax. 🤷🏻♂️
What is the name of the song in clip 3?
I have the same question !!
Watching this video after the first minute "wow, this is so inspiring, let me pick up my guitar!",4 minutes into it"I wonder how much money I could get if I sell all my guitars plus gear as a bundle"
He's about as technically impressive as anyone on earth. He's also as emotive as any player out there in virtually any style. GOAT status confirmed.
Just a very honest opinion -> very much agreed that Guthrie is the "GOAT of Versatility", he can play every genre of music: Jazz, Rock, Blues, Country and Fusion - and he plays them with elite level of proficiency and it all sounds very creative. He could indeed be the All time electric guitar goat. 🔥
BUT
Shawn Lane is still the "GOAT of Speed" and is faster while Allan Holdsworth is the GOAT of theoretical complexity as no one can copy his ultra complicated licks.👍
other goats are:
Yngwie Malmsteen - NeoClassical and "vibrato" GOAT .
There's actually no "End All be All" of the guitar IMHO.😉
Yeah. Really at the end of the day. Shawn Lane in Paul Gilbert's words "is the most terrifying guitar player alive." But at the end there isn't really a "GOAT."
Not that I disagree necessarily, as a huge Shawn fan, but on what basis do you say Shawn is faster? Have you analysed every passage of fast playing both guys have ever produced and come up with consistent note per second values for each passage?
@@biscobisco1882 hello mate, we are both huge Shawn Lane fan and I can surely and definitely say after binge watching Shawn Lane videos and Guthrie Govan videos for more than a decade and comparing them as well as hundreds of other fast guitarists. Shawn Lane is clearly faster and as a guitarist myself trying to learn some of their songs, both are fast, Guthrie employs different techniques that make him sound very fast (like the octave tapping in his piece "Fives") but technically speaking when it comes to "alternate picking" speed, its a no contest, Shawn Lane is king (he has this live MIT 1993 guitar and drum jam floating somewhere in UA-cam which is insane). I've never seen anyone play as fast not even those who only play for the sake of speed (like some Rusty or MAB guy)🤭 Also I've read a "Guitar World" magazine issue (I forgot the month, but its in 2008 if Im not mistaken), unofficially crowned Shawn Lane as the fastest guitarist in the world at 18 notes per second.🔥Cheers!
His beard surely makes him a goat if not the GOAT
He is. The End.
Guitarist for all styles !!!
2:20 when the elephant just arrives in the room!
The answer is yes .
I was comparing Satriani " Echos" live to Shawn Lane and Holdsworth one day, I came to the conclusion, Satriani could take you to the moon with chops, but he always comes back to earth
So, do you prefer Joe Satriani over Shawn Lane and Allan Holdsworth?
@@robertsmithduarte7732 as far as music musicians and non musicians can listen to.
Satriani has a hard rock feel and adds some Jazz Fusion
where as Holdsworth is Modern Jazz and Shawn Lane is as well. They are great but as performers I don't think they are accessible to anyone outside of musicians .Shawn could have been, but had such phenomenal technique he got into doing long solo jams .
Satriani EJ, Gary Hoey , those guys are not capable of doing what Lane or Holdsworth did, but possibly their limitations allowed them to be more accessible
@@johnmcminn9455 I agree
@@zombielandakausa7468 no way, one of the most under stated.
he actually has a degree in Classical Composition, and it shows
I'm willing to bet that as great as Guthrie is, even he would admit that Shawn Lane was, is, and will always be the G.O.A.T.
Respect to GG, but Shawn Lane is the GOAT.
I always thought Steve Morse was the goat, but that was back in 80s. Maybe times have changed. Not familiar with Guthrie, but seems very versatile all styles. So maybe. 🤔
Morse has a valid claim, he's been one of my favourites since the Dregs, there's nothing he couldn't play, and his musicality is off the charts.
@@GreenDistantStar I was super into them, the Dregs, and his solo albums back in high school. Had his Hot Licks instructional tapes as well. Probably why I don't play guitar anymore. I was setting the standard too high. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@TABL3SIX yep, I still have the VHS tape!
Greg howe, paul gilbert
Someone teach me how to play like him pls lol
Great videos! He is the goat IMO
And after seeing this videos, is more clear to me
Thanks 👍 yeah he's not bad is he !
I agree Guthrie is probably the current GOAT, although Greg Howe held that position in my eyes for three decades and still does, at least for this Gen Xer.
However, I think the amazing Max Ostro might take the crown soon...
Guthrie is certainly one of the best electric guitarists playing today, but GOAT might be a bit of a stretch. He's versatile, but so are Greg Koch and Johnny Hiland. He can shred, but so can Buckethead and Paul Gilbert. Matteo Mancuso is only in his 20s and already he's being whispered as GOAT material. Max Ostro is mind-blowing. The GOAT for me is close thing between Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane, with the Memphis Monster my personal choice.
I loved the Memphis monster, but he idolised and called Holdsworth the greatest.
After having seen so many guitarists in my life, I believe the only guitar player alive who is on the same level is Kiko Loureiro.
I think the only contender for the next Guthrie is Max Ostro.
Simple answer: Yes.
IT'S A NO BRAINER
He Is The Father of GOAT.S...this i knew ..nd its true ........God of GOD ....if there n e one then lets drop a comment ...hahahahah ...No one is there like Him....
Imo, there is no level higher than Guthrie, but I do prefer Max Ostro’s lead work. Sometimes Guthrie is just a little “too much”. Max is absolutely perfect for my ears.
I think Mateus Mancuso may have already surpassed him, but he's up there for sure.
This will probably be a really unpopular opinion here, considering that this channel is dedicated to shred, which I do love, but there’s more to being the GOAT than shredding and for me Jimi Hendrix will forever be the GOAT…no disrespect to Guthrie Govan, or Shawn Lane RIP, or any of the numerous great shredders over the years but nobody else has done for guitar, rock, blues or metal what Jimi did.
He roasts everyone he plays with!
Why do people compare great guitarists ? I would say, Because they like to know where we stand with each other.
Then you get people claiming GOAT. It should be most popular or your favorite.
This guy would last ten minutes in battle with Via. Which is longer than most.
Other than a Movie I have never seen, Who has ever had the balls ? Guess who knows better ?
Not the GOAT, but damn good.
gurthrie is in his own galaxy.
but Allan is still lightyears ahead of even him. GG uses comming harmony. AH rivals Ravel and Stavinsky for his chords and rhythms.
Yes....he is.
E-guitar maybe. But e-guitar is easy compared to, say, flamenco. Paco de Lucia is the guitar GOAT.
HO LEE CHEET!
No, that would be Shawn Lane. But Guthrie certain is among the greats.
He's amazing but Paul Gilbert tops my list :)
He can master every top player except Malmsteen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes he’s the goat. Dude phrasing when he’s not doing demonstrations is literally like no other… beautiful soaring bends with short flurries of intentionally chaotic notes that resolve into more gorgeous phrases
There are few GOATs above him, and they will always be!
First guitar GOAT is Wes Monthomery, the next 2 are Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin!
Those 3 guitarist are the GOATs of melody, harmony, complexity uniqeness and technique!
Till this day nobody has ever done that kind of guitar progression.
Guthrie is GOAT, Yngwie is GOAt, Mancuso, Gambale also, but only after Wes and Holdsworth!
He's literally a Capricorn which is the sign of the goat (mastery). He's a massive inspiration for me.
Lol.
@@robertsmithduarte7732 you laugh but guthrie wouldn't
@@zacksguitarhacks6390 I laughed because it's true that was born under the sign of Capricorn. 😉☺️
@@robertsmithduarte7732 oh perhaps the actual humor in it alluded me lol
@@zacksguitarhacks6390 Indeed. No biggie, from one guitarist to another. ☺️
I don’t think there is a “goat“. Anymore these days there are a handful of guitarists that can technically execute anything possible. Guthrie is one of them. From that point it’s simply a matter of personal preference. Guthrie sure is up there though isn’t he?
I think the GOAT is Shawn Lane
Everything is there except the "touch"...
I really don’t like GOAT for guitarist as the evolution of playing is much more nuanced then say an athlete that runs faster than another…
Wonderful playing…but the GOAT? Not quite, he has a long way to go before he gets close to Shawn Lane.
Not quite. Michael Romeo is the GOAT.
I like Romeo more, too. But there is no GOAT.
Guthrie Govan is a brilliantly intelligent and incredibly knowledgeable instrumentalist and a very nice person, but unfortunately an uninteresting storyteller and composer.
Very impressive finger technique though!
Satriani is the Goat
It’s SHAWN LANE ! If Shawn was not born they don’t have anyone to copy. Keep copying ! Shawn is smiling from above. Oh and loose the plectrum or guitar pick. Matteo Mancuso is making everyone look bad.
