I'm about 20 minutes in, and I so dearly hope the new catacomb will prove to be Kennedy's. To my delight, ACD's short stories are far darker than the Sherlock Holmes series. Your narration gives life to these texts, as I have seldom heard any other do!
The very best Narrative I have ever had the honor of listening to. So Beautiful. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud . Thank you so much for your reading. The best of the best.
I first read this story, in Chinese translation, when I was in primary school. I still remember the horror it inspired in me. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is no doubt a master of storytelling.
Dear Greg, I reeeeeeally like this. I have listened to it several times and there is something extra sinister/suspenseful about your deepened voice in this reading. Worth a listen folks!
Enjoyed the story very much. Reader has a very soothing voice; easy to listen to especially late at night. Had a feeling the story was going to end that way! 😱
Perhaps i never told you, even when i hear stories on other chanels, i come back to you, and from the first minute i hear your voice i sink into calmness, pleasure, deep relaxing state. There are only 2 people on whole youtube with such a voice. You could talk all nonsence in the world and would still sounds good with your voice. You would sound fantastic as preaching, fantastic! Or as a tv reporter, lol or whatever! But best here for us!
Best Conan Doyle narrator! I seem to recall it being a public domain issue, but I'm holding out on listening toThe Casebook of Sherlock Holmes until you narrate it.
I must say I could feel this one coming. Ah, man’s insensitivity! And the price to pay. Great job on the accents here, Greg! Thanks for this chilling tale, completely new to me.
This story reminds me of Poe's, The Cask of Amontillado. Although it has been decades since I read it. A tale of revenge masked in the guise of friendship and sharing. I find comfort falling to sleep with Mr. Wagland"s voice. Let's just not let my husband know I'm taking him to bed every night!
This is definitely not my favourite Story that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has ever written. However I think its says a lot about the culture of the time, and emphasises how much we have changed since. The reader is absolutely fabulous and really brings the story to life. Thank you
What a good story. Quite frightening when you think of the intention and outcome. My sympathy was quickly where, I think, ACD expected it to be. Thank you Greg for another great performance. I’m also having fun with your rendition of EAP. I don’t Twitter hence the note here. Hang in there lol. 😊
In my late teens I discovered a new face of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle it was the occultism I 1st read The Brown Hand and became fascinated with this new phase realizing that there were more than Sherlock Holmes behind this brilliant mind
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio They both masters of the macabre althogh I'm more familiar with the works of E F Benson than M R James thank you for your reply it means a lot from 1 literary mind to another
Who painted this cover picture ? I really would like to see the whole thing. I love it. Thank you anyone for info of the artist. (Excellent reading as ever, a total joy of literary cosy-ness)
Agree with both of your conclusions; Sherlock would certainly have sensed foul play…..and he would, most def, have let Berger off, as Kennedy had violated all the chivalrous codes that Holmes held dear…
17:40 Heh.. I think I know where this is going. Seems to have flavors of a certain famous 'cask' lol HA! I knew it, and the lesson learned is that a proper adventurer shall always carry spare matches and candles. A gentleman never knows when he might need to give chase to his foe in dark places.
I wish Greg Wagland. would read the Perry Mason books, those audiobooks have a lousy monotone reader, to the point, I can't get through one of his audios Don't ask me his name, I don't know, they are on UA-cam, tho

This site is a treasure trove of (for me) little known stories by Conan Doyle. Many thanks.
Thanks John. Glad you found it.

Much appreciated.

Greg Wagland is possibly the best reader I've heard in many many audiobooks online.
Incomparable voice and talent!
I first read this story, in Chinese translation, when I was in primary school. I still remember the horror it inspired in me. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is no doubt a master of storytelling.
Yes, very creepy.
In Chinese,, Wow!
What a grim and immersive story with such wonderful prose. Amazing reading performance as expected.
This is a wonderful story and listening with eyes closed, came into view !!! Thank you again Mr Waglan .
Dear Greg, I reeeeeeally like this. I have listened to it several times and there is something extra sinister/suspenseful about your deepened voice in this reading. Worth a listen folks!
Many thanks, Susan! Maybe it was intentional - I can't really remember.
Enjoyed the story very much. Reader has a very soothing voice; easy to listen to especially late at night. Had a feeling the story was going to end that way! 😱
He is so good at elevating suspense bit by bit.
A delicious read in combination with a wonderful painting.

The absolute king of Sir ACD does it again! There is no equal to the quality of his narration.
It's a good suspenseful tale, Daniel. Much neglected, many of his works.
What an incredible imagination.
Best Conan Doyle narrator! I seem to recall it being a public domain issue, but I'm holding out on listening toThe Casebook of Sherlock Holmes until you narrate it.
Me too!
Yes, it's only a story constructed of words but when so finely written and narrated leaves me feeling exhausted. Thanks all.
I must say I could feel this one coming. Ah, man’s insensitivity! And the price to pay. Great job on the accents here, Greg! Thanks for this chilling tale, completely new to me.

I love these, after reading all the books, it is good to hear it read out in the way it should be
Oisin Raymond - Fabulous isn't he!
You earn many kudos for your interpretations of the various characters. May I say they are well deserved indeed. I willingly add mine. Bravo.
A brilliant tale thank you.
Thank you Greg. Your so talented. You make the story come alive.
Thank you, LBB. Appreciated.
Your a great reader...love to lay back and relax.thankyou.

I love this narrator. Love Doyle
You just have to love Sherlock

Ohhh boy. Saw that one coming. Absolutely brutal.
Excellent narration as usual. Thank you for this!!
My pleasure!

Yes I really enjoyed recording them. But then I do like a ghostly, supernatural tale, like stories of M. R. James and E. F. Benson. Cheers!

Exquisite reading. Thank you
Thank you, Oberg. J.S.
🌹thanks Greg!
3rd time is the charm.
I hope. My phone keeps turning off. Spooky!!
Thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing 😊 😊 😊
Thanks for watching!
Great story and superb reading as always. It totally reminded me of the Edgar Allen Poe story
Glad you enjoyed it!
Rich punk, on a too-short string. Great story, satisfying resolution.
What inspired me to use that horrible green strip on the picture. However, thanks Chernobyl Farms.
Amazing narration! I fancy it would have made a thrilling horror story sequel - Revenge of the Deceased: Dark Catacomb Homicide!
Cheers Subha!
Thank you sop much! Really love the narrator!
Thank you 😀
I love, love, love it!
wonderful reading as usual - thanks. . . :}
i've been around too long. my stomach hurts from the apprehension - yup.
TL;DR - Don't make a move on Mrs Conan Doyle.
This story reminds me of the Edgar Allen Poe story "The Cask of Amontillado."
One of Doyle's literary role models was Edgar Allan Poe, and this story is very Poe-esque!
Yes, agreed.
This strikes me like The Botin of Acantillado in the big picture
definitely Greg Wagland for Doyle and Michael Hordern for M.R. James
Now that's what I call being in great company. Cheers Stephen.
Fabulous!! Thank you!!!
Bravo! Well done.
Who painted this cover picture ? I really would like to see the whole thing. I love it. Thank you anyone for info of the artist. (Excellent reading as ever, a total joy of literary cosy-ness)
Sherlock would have immediately sensed foul play and easily solved this one. He may have let Berger off the hook though.

predictable but it flows well - it didn't feel like 36 minutes went by for me

ACD's version of The Cask Of Amontillado
Slow build up BUT nice payoff...ACD doing the type of material of EAP...Wagland's expertise does not let you down...
Very Poe-like!
n.b. where is the painting from? seems to be a detail - and it's very good.
thanks much :}
It's by John Singer Sargent. The steps of S.S. Domenico and ?? Cheers.
Rome.
Good question & I had no idea it as Sergeant
Somewhat like the Cask of Amontillado
I thought that I smelled a cask of amontilliado here.
I wish Greg Wagland. would read the Perry Mason books, those audiobooks have a lousy monotone reader, to the point, I can't get through one of his audios

Kind of you SJ R. Perry Mason books probably still subject to copyright. Sadly. Cheers.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Oh yes, copyright issues.
One only hopes Berger gets his girlfriend back
In some ways not dissimilar to 'The Cone' by H. G. Wells...
Indeed a wicked revenge!
Love listening to Greg Wagland but this seems/sounds very flat for him?
What can I say? Bad batch of opium?
Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio 😋
Cadk of Amontillado.
No, the chance of getting 2000 turns right is not 1:2000
With thanks to Edgar Allan Poe's "Cask of Amontillado". Talk about plagiarism!
Greg are you well🙁
Yes thanks Tracey. You good?
plagarist of Poe's the cask of amontillado
