- A young man, of modest means, visits his rich relative at his mansion in Suffolk. He's got a dour Brazilian wife and an exotic menagerie. What's not to like?
It's read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

No income, no education and no prospects but still keeps a valet. Brilliant! A true gentleman for sure.
We all do! Surely?
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Obviously! Who else would pack my valise?
As I began listening I started to bemoan my lack of rich, titled relatives...but then maybe I’m ok without any! Thanks again Greg, such an atmospheric, emotive reading.
I know. Mine are poor and entitled - er... mainly.
This is yet another of your gifts to us. I still have not come to understand how to respond to the support so generously given to me but I hope you know how much I appreciate these readings as I begin yet another cycle of chemotherapy and perhaps more sleepless nights...kept company by these engrossing tales, marvelously read. Thanks over and over again💌
Thoughts and prayers for your chemo, Elizabeth.Yes Greg's a marvel isn't he?
💕💕💕💕
Strength to you Elizabeth.
Elizebeth Penington , I do hope you are feeling better. These stories are a wonder. Joy and love to you.❤️
Elizebeth Penington Big hugs. These stories are so helpful in bringing us to another place. 💕❤️
❤I pray you recover and feel healthy and happy🍀🤗🇨🇦
Such a great story. Slightly reminiscent of the Holmes tale called The Engineer's Thumb.
Tweren’t no bedtime story this one!! YEESH!
No. Not for the faint hearted!
I'm parked in my driveway, still in my car, and am transfixed. What a story. My heart is pounding.
Conan Doyle at his best narrated in a superb manner befitting of this literary gem. Thank you so much Mr. Wagland. You have given me insight into the value and skill of your profession entwined with the greatest pleasure in the listening and evocation of, this especially, but many other tales of which plenty are yet to come. I consider myself blessed in the partaking and extend my heartfelt thanks to you once again !
You're very welcome, mway. Thanks for commenting.
Wow! You really made me sit on the edge of my seat during this one, Greg! A great story fantastically read.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I like the Braz Cat!
This is a fabulous tale, very intriguing and imaginative, read by an incredible orator! Can't get any better than this! ❤️
What an escape these are to me while I work, total escape from all the madness.Read beautifully and perfect length to keep your attention. Thanks
It's a mad mad world, right enough. Cheers Simon!
please never stop!!! i listen to you every night!!!
I suppose death might conceivably slow me down a tad.
Mr. Wagland is rather addictive. Such a tremendously gifted man.
I listen to Greg every night too.
I think I have listened to some stories 10 times or more as I can never stay awake to the end.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Hopefully not before some more of H G Wells's short stories!
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Well yes, alright. There's that. But only conceivably.
Doyle had a somewhat wicked mind. Such a vicious plan and odd outcome. Quite amazing. Thank you.
Do you not know that Doyle was a Satanist ?
Look it up.
Had i realized this was a Doyle before i started it, i would have never listened.
Sufferring from COVID-19, i was bed-ridden & my caregiver had inadvertently put my phone on a table too far out of my reach & strength to silence it & caregiver too busy to hear my hoarse cries for help.
Thus with delirious fever, i had to endure this terrifying tale.
NEVER Again !
I know it was a common thing back then, and I also know it's a work of fiction, but I was dismayed that the feline was executed. This is why I like animals more than people, animals respect the rules of nature.
Yes. I think they all thought that once a big cat had tasted 'long pig' they'd do anything to get some more and make 'a bit of a nuisance' of themselves.
Those private menageries still exist, don't they?
Sadly they do. There are, if my information is right, at least seven in China and 10 in Romania.
A splendid tale!
As I’m listening to this, my little black cat launched a VICIOUS ASSAULT on my left foot 😂 luckily he is only 10 pounds.
Why did u push dislike button? Friends, this button is not dowloamd button.ok
nicely done.
Fabulous tale and perfectly narrated. Thank you!
Kinda like a Poe story. He could have tried scratching it under the chin, LOL. Actually, you can stare down an animal...all it takes is a positive, dominant attitude (and some bear spray).
Great artwork selection. Virgin Forest by Henri Rousseau
Indeed. Great pic.
Excellent. So glad I found your channel.
Glad you enjoy it, Tjannarra!
Third time of listening - poor guy, poor cat. Interesting with some of these older stories to hear the different attitude toward animals that we generally have nowadays.
Wow! What a story, I love Sir Arthur!
Honestly you could captivate a rallied up high school with your reading.
I am very happy I found your channel. I was looking for something a little different to listen to and I finally found it.
I can’t wait to listen to the next one. And Greg’s voice talent is awesome.
Thank you!😎
Thank you Greg! What a story
Glad you enjoyed it, Madhan!
Thanks, do you have many people that live in England that subscribe to your channel or just ex-brits and anglophiles lol I love listening to your narrations, Cheers.
English and a fan!
Australian here 🇦🇺
A nailbiting tale superbly read mant thanks.
Oh, yes. Tibbles is hungry.
I knew what was coming the minute he met his cousins wife.
Thank You 😁, I really enjoyed it!
Perfectly read...such an enjoyable listen on a quiet afternoon. Thank you!
Thanks for listening
Love... Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thoroughly entertaining rendition 👏 So glad I found you 😼🐾
Wow! It’s 2:48 am and just finished listening. What an amazing story!
Nice one
i’m not sure, but i think you read tthe opening quote and some of the lines in the beginning of the story with a bit of sarcastic irony. :) such masterly work you do. what i want to know though is, what is he living off of to pay for a ‘suite’ to reside in and a valet? and be a ‘man-about-town’? E.B.White went once to live in a ‘small’? house in the country and complained that he had only like 3 servants and how would they ever get along! they have absolutely no idea how the rest of us live, do they? >:/ 🧐
after all he’d been through with that disgusting, horrible person, i was glad for him at the end - as he did seem a good guy, even though spoiled rich. how much one gets into a well written, amazingly narrated story. ✨🌷
Have you seen the price of Fortnum and Mason hampers recently ? How is one supposed to live ? As for vintage Claret......
Brilliant! Never heard this before. Greg I have only recently came across your readings and I have to say you do fantastic work! Your voice is perfect
GREAT READING! (as always from GW..) Story reminded me a little of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME...Find hidden strengths within yourself or else!,,,,
Did you narrate 'The Caterpillar' by E.F Benson on Librivox.com? That is one of my favorite stories and narrations. The style seemed similar to yours. I will have to go back and check😊
I did narrate The Caterpillar but not on Librivox! It's on audible!
First I thought what a crap but then it got to me/ what a overly great story/ I wish tp repeat it. What an awesome gramma and choice of words, truly masterful. Thanks big time/ I hope I can find another one just like this one. Thanks a million. Wish I could express my self like this/ genius.
The tension builds inexorably and it's beautifully written. Glad you enjoyed.
Greg reminds me of the late great frank muller excellent narrators
Wow, thanks!
This story can finally come into more accurate perspective now that we realize a jaguar is kind of like a cross between a leopard and a teddy bear.

Very well done, again. Witty story, too.
very nice. thank you!
Glad you liked it, Annele!
Thank you , such a fine reading.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good story!
Thanks for listening
very good
I only say, every reading is magic. I am 73 and cannot read anymore. Bad eyes
Who is the artist for the title art?
I must be a little slow, as I don't quite "get" the ending of the story. Could some kind person explain? :/
He got rich.
@@Defy5 lol ok! Not a sad ending then...
HAY VÃI
Nice story🥹❤️🙏
Thank you! 🙂
Everyone already said it.
😮
I'm sorry. But no one except Jeremy Irons can read this aloud.
Ha!
Triple Ha...! !

The East African slave trade ( Sudan , Kenya , Zanzibar ) was the
exclusive monopoly of Arab ( ie. Muslim ) slave traders. Don't you
learn anything in school ?
