  • This is rather a good story from the collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures entitled His Last Bow, published in 1917. The action takes place in Cornwall where Holmes is supposed to be recuperating from the rigours of his metropolitan life. He is summoned to attend a bizarre and gruesome crime scene. Nobody can envy those carted off in the wagon to Helston.
    It is read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

    A moment's appreciation for mister Wagland, who so perfectly enunciated the story you could instantly hear Holmes interrupting Leonberger despite being voiced by the same person.

    As an over the road Truck driver I spend up to almost 11 hours of the day sitting behind the wheel rolling down the roads and highways. I absolutely love spending the hours listening to various audiobooks to help has the time and keep my mind active, your renderings of Holmes and Watson are the best I have found to date. In a few cases I am going back through and listening to some of the books for the 5th or 6th time considering that I have had a love for Doyle's works since grade school. With love and deepest appreciation from the American roadways.

      One of my favorite comments, I got such a wonderful picture of you driving through Iowa or or Arizona or Georgia in a big rig (the rest of us fear so much when it comes up behind us because we're always taught y'all need a football field to stop, lol!)😊 and we're always hoping you all have had enough sleep~cuz that's a serious problem for you guys and we always want everyone to be safe on the Great American Roads!
      No I will always picture you driving with a peaceful mind, perhaps on the mother road of route 66, with a big smile on your face, because where you really are, is in the gaslit byways and narrow passageways of Victorian London, or bouncing around in a horse-driven 'trap', out on country roads leading to Wisteria Lodge or Something or Other House, peeling the layers of the latest conundrum back with Watson and Holmes where the game is ever afoot!
      Be safe. 🚛

    I must also say that there are many good things available to the uncomfortable chemotherapy patient and I am often bedridden. So I have listened to and appreciated many of them. This must be stated clearly: these readings are the best of any. There are many like those narrated by John Moffat for example, but you are the finest. The tone, the elocution, the brilliant character interpretation and much more are incomparable and I am full of gratitude and admiration. Yes, thank you.

    47:14 “‘You know,’ I answered with some emotion, for I had never seen so much of Holmes’ heart before, ‘…that it is my *greatest joy and privilege* to help you’.”
    I liked Holmes stories growing up, but hearing OP’s delivery of that line is the moment I fell in love with the characters of Holmes and Watson. Makes my heart swell every time I hear it!

    One of the things I pick up from Greg's narration is that its a lot harder to present than it sounds. He uses pauses so beautifully. Just the right length to sweep us into the end of the sentence or start of a new one. Not too long, not too short, perfect. Note they can disappear in the quoting from characters. Mmmm. Its a bit of an art this stuff. We are the richer in mind for his efforts. Not just Holmes, the enchantment continues well on into Greg's others narrative works. He must be a good man to do this for the world.

    When I visit the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, I always listen to this story. You can almost follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Arthur Conan Doyle. My interpretation is;
    For the cottage at Poldhu, read Predannack Wollas, a remote farm that is situated on a headland south of Mullion, a tremendously atmospheric location. It is located sufficiently close to have allowed Holmes immediate access by foot to moorland covered in ancient monuments, Predannack (now an old WW2 airfield) and Goonhilly Downs.
    For the hamlet of Tredannack Wollas, "the cottages of a couple of hundred inhabitants clustered round an ancient moss grown church" read Mullion.
    It's easy to imagine Holmes in these locations as they fit the narrative well.

    The properties of ibogaine, found in various African hallucinogenic plants, and little known until the 1960s, are similar to, though less intense than, devil’s root.
    It’s “remarkable” that Doyle might have heard of it way back then.
    It is mostly found in Gabon, in West Central Africa, as in the same area as in the story.

      Leslie Klinger in his ‘The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes’ lists several possible candidates for The Devil’s Foot Root ranging from the Calabar bean to (Erythrophlum guineense) both of which cause effects similar to Watson’s description among other possible candidates for “Devil’s Foot Root”.

    I’m really appreciating the narration more, now that I know it’s you, the uploader. You’ve got a very pleasing voice for your presentations, nicely expressive without being over-dramatic. I’ve been subbed for a while, but haven’t indulged recently, and now I don’t know why. I’ve got a dull day here, with a sick headache, so I’m looking forward to *over*indulging. It’s going to be a good day after all, I can dim the room, and just relax and listen.

      Sue Collins Sherlock Holmes as a character is pretty much in the public domain in the 21st century, so it’s not like there’s anything keeping one from writing a Holmes pastiche these days if they think they’re up to it and really want to give it a try.

      When you say public school what do you mean?

    • @wmnoffaith1
      @wmnoffaith1 4 роки тому +6

      Perhaps I have the wrong term. Although I'm of English descent ethnically, I live in the U.S. I understood that what we would call a prep school here, in Great Britain was called a public school, meaning a boarding school independent from the district: eg .Eton, Harrow, Westminster, Charterhouse, et al. I was asking based on the posh, old school tie type accent you have which is marvellous. If you are " putting on" this accent, how did you learn it? Theatre school? It's so perfectly convincing! ( Don't tell me your real accent is Cockney. I won't believe it, lol)

      I’ve recently recommended your YT site to the You Tube Pipe Community (YTPC) and some of them have said they were going to sub you. The two things just naturally go together! You let me know when you are ready Greg and we’ll help you get started. 👍

    I adore your narrations you are amazing at what you do! I listen to many many audio books and podcasts because I'm dyslexic and would never be able to keep up with all the stories I want to read!! But your narrations are the best by far. I am a huge fan 😃

    I kept checking Magpie Audio for your return and I am very happy to see you back. Stories are more important than ever and help me feel compos mentis in a deranged world. I wonder if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle thought the world was a bit barmy in his time. Hang in there Greg! :)

      Wouldn't that be wonderful? I'm sitting here in my Victorian sitting room listening to this. The only thing missing is Sherlock Holmes in the wing chair and a fireplace. I imagine Greg is narrating this while making tea over a spirit lamp and smoking shag tobacco from a Persian slipper ( and of course wearing a silk paisley smoking jacket). Yes,I know he's probably wearing jeans and sneakers but I can't visualize that. It wouldn't match the voice.

    Truly the greatest Holmes story I'd heard yet, and I have had the pleasure to listen to many here.
    Villain, resolution, and certainly, comraderie, were all extremely satisfying.
    My one concern was the remark of fire early in the story by Holmes. I feel this could have been a bit less on the nose.
    Still, the experiment, by Gods what a lovely humanizing moment.
