@@robynking8475 I was visiting Gary a bit before his passing. He was very proud of Kinyatta, a talented musician as Gary told me he was dong some drum corps arranging. Gary and I played music together as kids every day, always attempting to improve our lines. I'll never forget the day I drove Mrs. King and Gary down to Juliard in NYC for his audition. I think I was about 18 years old. Mrs. King treated me to a movie while Gary was at Juliard.
Kinyatta, your dad was very proud of you. He told me you were an arranger for a drum corps. This is great stuff! Your dad, me, Harry Brown, Nate Smith and so many others got our start playing with the Middletown Drum Corps.
Gary was a marvelous musician and very serious about his music. As Kids, Gary and I spent countless hours sitting anywhere working out riffs and phrasing. He was a natural. He called and asked to see me a few weeks before he passed. We had a wonderful conversation and Gary showed me around the neighborhood. Gary, may you rest in peace. I love you buddy.
Bob James and crew have been my fave jazzers since the 70's. About 30 years ago, when people were just starting to get home PCs, I emailed Bob and he emailed me back. So nice!
Bob has been my favorite keyboardist for almost 50 years. It's the notes he plays, and his chords. I just love the bands he puts together. Listen to every piano note he plays on this solo at 10:00. Genius.
being from Kansas city Missouri by James came here all the time on Sundays in the park lots of times they were free with the same lineup very king was awesome at the time he was here and he had Andy Newmark playing drums Unforgettable
Love, love, love Bob James……. He is every bit as great today as he was in 1985. Missed seeing him live during the pandemic but enjoyed watching older performances online while we were in isolation…. Thank you BOB JAMES!
If I was at this damned concert, I would still be there, shouting, 'ENCORE guys, don't leave a brother hanging'. Man this was breathtaking !! 36 years later this seriously rocks. I can't really recall seeing Bob with Eric, Ralph, Steve & Richard either with Paul Jackson or Gary King !! This really was mind blowing. Man Kirk is baaaaaad !!
English isn't my native language, but I call these guys 'the groove providers', meaning: How many contemporary genres (in popular music) have been influenced by these good men? All of them!
Gary King can be quite a character on stage, LOL! Who knew!! Had always figured him to be a very mellow and very laid back bass player. Wonderful to see each musician in the band being very enthusiastic about, and just fully enjoying playing the music.
I knew gary from middletown,N.Y. He had perfect pitch. We would bang on an object and he would know what note it was. I jammed with him @1970.He was so much better than any of us.
Wow, forgotten times when the music was wild, fresh, complex and inspiring. Where is such music today? Music has deteriorated significantly. Please young people, kick in the ass of the music industry, educate yourself and bring it back.
I always look to see who the musicians are, and it’s sad when they aren’t listed. I believe this is the lineup for this great show: Musicians acoustic piano (Yamaha) & electric piano Bob James electric bass Gary King electric guitar Dean Brown saxophones, flute Kirk Whalum drums Harvey Mason percussion Dennis Henderson
Such a joy! Just "came across it" again playing my favorites list and am carried away as before at this wonderful miracle of making music together. Had to laugh when the director loses track of where Bob was (03:22)!
WOW!!!!!!! INCREDIBLE BAND!!!!! The GREAT Gary King on bass and the MASTER Harvey Mason on drums!!! Kirk Whalum is KILLING and the MAN Dean Brown is on guitar! Thank you for posting this!!!
Wow. This is a very pleasant surprise to find on UA-cam. The whole concert is a real joy to watch. Oh, and how time flies when you are enjoying something! It's great to see Gary King playing on stage alongside Bob James. Also, I find "Unicorn" a real treat. It's one of my favourite Bob James compositions; and it really works well here. Many thanks for posting this so that all 4000 (!!!) of the of us can reminisce about the music of the 1980's.
Thank you
*Harvey and Gary got that groove!* And what a band! Kirk, Dean and Dennis are all great! And I *love* Bob James! His playing, his compositions and his arrangements! Damn! Thanks to Vadim for uploading this!
Thanks, Vadim! I love this...all are just great players. Really good material played beautifully. Plus, Harvey Mason's one of my very favorite drummers. Thanks, again.
I remember Gary King's awesome playing on The Bob James album entitled "One". egads that guy could get the whole 1812 Overture in there on a bridge in between measures it was incredible. Just smooth and creative playing that never wears old never gets tiresome.
Always remember coming home from watching the star wars a new hope movie way back in 1978 and this being on tv after a pirate movie on a saturday night. And taxi come on and this music and the the yellow cab Stiles out like a history beacon in my mind I must of have been 7 going on 8 on 1978.

Night Crawler is one of my favorite Bob James songs. This version took the Funk right OUT of it. The bassline groove was the hook!!
Hermosoooo....
To Robert G. Raynor, Jr.: Bob James loved Grover Washington's sound that's why he promoted Kirk's career! Kirk was very much influenced by Grover.
Glad he did. Kirk da best!!
Foxy! Hes got a such a unique style on the piano.

Bob James es el mejor desde 1977. Y lo sigue siendo.
A real command performance all but Kirk Whalum was the stand out performer on that stage.
