Touchdown Review by Thom Jurek
Bob James' most enduring recording is perhaps one of his least adventurous. Full of simple laid-back melodies, light, airy grooves, and quiet backdrops, it's a smooth jazz "masterpiece." It's an enduring part of his catalog and was the launch pad for many movie and television projects, and for a string of hit recordings for the Warner label in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. In effect, it insured his financial security for the future. The set is notable for its heavyweight cast including David Sanborn, Ron Carter, Idris Muhammad, Steve Gadd, Eric Gale, Hubert Laws, and Earl Klugh. It also netted the monster hit "Angela (Theme from Taxi)," which continued to get airplay on smooth jazz stations into the 21st century. James is a highly developed pianist, arranger, and composer, and while the music here is as safe as milk, it nonetheless spoke to millions.

About 45 years ago I listened to Bob James' Touchdown every week because it was actually the title theme of a football highlight show from a broadcaster in Tokyo. Who now believes it featured Oklahoma Sooners!? While showing a condensed game the background was filled with Philadelphia soul music!
I was a 14 year old kid listening to the theme from the TV show "Taxi", and that when I immediately fell in love with Bob James's Music, and I 've been a loyal fan ever since 😅
👍👍
The iconic classical jazz of B.J. is phenomenal and I've listened for decades, especially touchdown and Bob James 4 is so smooth ,superb. The best goat non-lyrics easy-going in album that exists. Period. Nuf said. End of an era.
👍👍👍
Man these jams my dad had on his reel to reel. LoL❤

Donald probably thinks he could do it better.
Love. "Steely Dan" isn't just one person, but the name of a band.
Brings back a lot of memories as I would play this record getting ready for junior high school in 1980. of course everyone in the US knew Angela as the Taxi theme, thanks for this share Drew!
My pleasure 😊
Yes indeed love this album ❤️

@@54music2 This song reminds of the time past precious moments
The title track "Touchdown" was supposed to have been Taxi's title music, but that its funk-disco vibe did not quite fit in with the show's premise.
Instead, it was "Angela" that became the title theme. Originally it was only to be used as background music in the show's third episode, "Blind Date," during the scene where Alex meets up with Angela Matusa (Suzanne Kent).
👍👍
Just great sounds thanks Bob

Loved this album. Must have played "Angela" and "Touchdown" I dont know how many times..I see in your notes that the late, great David Sandborn played on the 3rd song, but didnt he also have a solo on Touchdown? I always thought it was him. DAVID SANDBORN RIH
I have corrected the mistake. David Sandborn is listed as playing on Track 2. Touchdown. Thank you for pointing this out.
