He raced the 455 from 1990 to 2004, at Englishtown and Island Dragway. He’s doing a cam swap right now, gonna get it racing 1/8th mile by August

My wife had a 74 Vette with the 4sp when we met. I couldn't believe how slow it was. So when her and her sister went to visit their parents for the week I slipped in a de camed 400 small block out of one of my race cars. It went from 250 hp to 375 hp. Even with the 355 gears, it perked it right up. When my wife got home I told her I gave her Corvette a tune-up and had her take it for a ride. She was very happy with the tune-up even after I told her it had to run on premium gas.

I had a 79 10th Anniversary T/A in high school (1985/6) with a 400/4 speed and 3.23 gears. It ran a best of 14.75 and would always run in the high 14's. The only modifications were true duals, a recurve on the distributor and a rejetting on Q-Jet. I think that would qualify under these rules. I wish I had kept it but I traded it for a brand new 1987 Formula 350. The T/A was a better car.

And I think it gave him like 25 more horses. I was surprised at how peppy that little 4 banger is. And his car would GAP both these sorry sites for muscle cars !! I know that those engines could be made to run better. But I'm talking stock out the gate, they were absolute turds !!

    @PhenomProductions23 Рік тому

I have the Trans Am version of this but it's the same car under the hood and inside, just with all the fancy "Look at me package" spoilers and Red Bird on the hood with the shaker scoop.
Bone Stock 185hp /310 torque Pontiac 400 only mines the Auto Th350 so no Overdrive gear.
But it's still a Pontiac 400 so I'm 99% sure that with a few Quick mods and a budget of $5k The clock can be turned back on that '76 400.
Back to say 1970-'71 Era Ram Air 3 Numbers without having to stroke it or bore it out.
Like for example, say we re-jet the stock Quadrajet 4-barrel carb, Port the stock 6X heads for Max Flow. and upgrade to screw in studs over pressed in. Port the Intake and swap in a Bigger hydraulic roller cam with a 114-116 LSA, roller lifters, springs, pushrods, roller rockers, and swap in forged flat top pistons to raise compression from 7.6:1 to around 9.4 and forged rods to replace the factory weak cast ones, balance the original crank, 700R4 swap, shorten the driveshaft, re-gear the rear end for 3.73 posi, longtube headers into free flowing true dual exhaust 3" out the back with some Sticky Drag Radials to hook up.
That should at least make it as fast as a Stock LT1 4th Gen Firebird right? Good for low 14s or high 13s? in the 1/4 Mile.
    What am i missing?
With Poncho engines, it's all about gaining more Torque than horsepoewer because that's what gets you out of the hole at lower Rpms.
Do I have enough to gain 100hp and 150 torque?

I had that same brown Corvette and it never ran this slow. In 74 the l-82 did not have cats on them. This car runs worse than the later 305cid catted vette. Maybe a couple of wires fell off the plugs. But if you look at the races the Corvette ran a faster Mph by a lot every time so the Corvette was not really racing but just following the Pontiac for a leisurely drive.
With a cam, headers, Victor Jr and a holly 750 I was beating BB Mopars with my 74 brown l-82. With a SB 400 mated to the 350 crank it went 165MPH with the stock close ratio Munsey stone crusher.

I’m going to pick the Vette, but it’s all in the prep. Now to watch…….EDIT: Firebird for the win - wow! Great looking cars, and I’ll bet they had a ton of fun. Thank you as always - love watching these races.

I'm guessing the Firebird still has the Cat and crappy 1976 exhaust on it. It should be a low 15 second car with the right tuning.

I own a 1975 firebird with a 73 front clip , a 1972 455HO ,built 4 speed and a 1990 ZR-1 corvette. The bird owns the quarter but the vetted can drive from here to Australia at 180 mph.

      It's a 1970 Muncie M-21 , there is actually a speed boat with a LT-5 , pulled by a ZR-1. Not sure if it still exists, 1990 was a while back.

My dad's girlfriend had a 78 TA 6.6 auto in 1980. I thought it ran pretty decent. Never took it to the track but it would do just shy of a 100 in the quarter by it's speedo if you manual shifted it. Maybe it had been modded a little before she got it, as she bought it used and it did have Cragers and meats on the rear. I thought it was bad ass at the time. I still like the look and handling of that generation.

If my shit ran a 18sec 1/4th mile. I'd just hard right hand turn and run that pos straight in the ditch !! Leave the keys and call a F'en Uber!! I just bought my 16yr old son a 2014 Subaru Legacy Premium for his 1st car. Stock it has 185hp. Now he has added a cold air intake, the chip, and a better exhaust. With what he has done I think it has just a hair over 200hp. It's Sad to say that his little AWD ricer, would Gap both the Vett and the Firebird. 😒😒 Whoever voted for the engine platform's from 1974 to the mid to late 80s. Needs Will Smith'd !! It took a 3.8L V6 Turbo from "Buick" to wake everyone else TF up !! When the Grand National waxed Every V8 Chevy, Ford, Dodge, and the rest of the world's so called fast cars. My buddy had a 87 G.N. and I witnessed him eat IROCS, Stang GTs, Corvettes for lunch !! Like I said, if my shit was that slow.... Straight In The Ditch !!!

I agree, there wasn't much out there performance wise between the mid -70's to mid 80's, Except maybe for the '74 Formula and Trans Am with the 455SD... those cars no joke! Unfortunately they didn't make very many. The Buick GN was another beast!
