Rotoscope the edge of the Vertigo geometry, add a blur transition around the edges, and then slowly shift the whole clip to the left. Very fancy looking, very satisfying, but surprisingly simple.
I don't even care about some stuff he makes videos about, but everything he talks about somehow becomes interesting. It's just so nice to listen to this man talk :D
Philip, your content is second to none. I rarely comment and I think there are many who silently share my enthusiasm. I never miss a video on any of your channels (at least all the ones I know of). Thanks for the high effort, high quality stuff
the way old skyboxes made everything look gigantic and incredibly far away just gives some specific kind of atmosphere that i love so much. i wish people carried that feeling over in some way to modern games more often
Same, they feel like fuzzy paintings or how you'd remember what skies looked like in your dreams, and whenever I have a nostalgia trip regarding my older gaming days of playing Half Life and Counter Strike, the first and foremost thing I always remember is the skybox. Its hard to explain but the low quality of them really does give it a hazy memory/dream effect.
I have always had a soft spot for GoldSrc skybox textures, they had an eerie, liminal and desolate vibe to them. Fascinating stuff, it's uncanny how Philip can create content from thin air. I love these breakdowns of Source engine and Counter-Strike levels that he makes, I could watch him talk about it all day long.
5:29 something i find very interesting is that despite de_overpass being set in Berlin, the 2D row of buildings is actually from Prague in czech republic. You can literally see the Prague castle on the image. Also the tower is not even from Berlin, its the Nuremberg TV Tower.
6:03 Not CS-related, but I really missed when racing games used that kind of method of selling the size of the world. Games like earlier Need for Speed games like Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon made it feel like it has a bigger world than the recent entries despite being objectively smaller. Meanwhile, modern racing games like the recent NFS ones have bigger worlds with towering buildings but somehow feel emptier and barren, no matter how hard they try to make it lively.
For some reason skyboxes/background art have always been of particular interest to me in games. I think it’s how they used to fire my imagination as a kid in terms of “what’s out there” Thanks for continuing to make videos which speak to such parts of my nerdy and sentimental psychology, Mr Kliks :)
Whilst the bumper on the police car has a negligible effect on performance alone, this sort of design choice across the board has a huge impact on performance.
Would be interesting to see a video on the train of overpass, since it looks like they changed the model and colour to make it more accurate to the Berlin u-bahn (even though the model is a british class 150 complete with diesel exhaust pipes which the electric u-bahn shouldn't have)
Transition at 5:09 from Vertigo to Overpass so well put together, i was actually frightened for a sec as my brain was not capable of comprehending how the video was suddenly taking place in Overpass
I actually love how they dont move when you do. They feel so much more massive because of it, and it gives the map such an incredible atmosphere i dont feel in any other game. Like, in most games mountains & such are actually really small, and you really feel that they're small especially if you've seen big mountains irl before. But these 2d skyboxes really make these distant mountains feel as massive as they should, and it applies that massive feeling to things that arent typically as massive as mountains; like skyscrapers for example. I dunno, i just really like it. Maybe its just my nostalgia.
Since everyone else has chose this video to tell Philip how much they appreciate his work, I'll just say that I also absolutely love it. And whenever I hear the classic song Steventhedreamer's music kick in, it just lifts my mood, also, I've never ever felt that the quality of the videos has been subpar. This isnt the first time I've made an appreciation comment, but it doesn't hurt to write another, does it?
@@AntonioZL The description they dropped when releasing overpass descripted the map as being set in Berlin, but it used the Praque skyline and the Nuremberg TV tower. At least they got the language of the signs right... Almost, as there was an uncommon use of a transkripted Umlaut on one, prior to some update. Whatever, felt like the Berlin thing was really just an afterthought thrown in just for the maps description that many people probably didn't even read to begin with.
0:43 I remember this… not that map in particular but I remember playing counterstrike once when I was a very very young child I think it was on my dad’s laptop, the rooms were very dark and I remember once falling out of one of them, landing out of bounds I can barely remember it though I can’t remember any further specifics
I hope CS2 renews my love of CS. I haven’t played in many, many years. I’m looking forward to the clean gun play and motion I remember from 1.6. Hope it lives up to the hype.
6:25 i dont know if you read comments but i guarantee those cranes still do move in source 2. i was playing a match the other day and got distracted cause i saw a crane swinging until it rested.
This is why I bought your music kit when it came out last year August! I love your videos, your dad's soundtracks and your love for Counter Strike. Thank you for over a decade of great content
Seriously thank you for making seriously detailed videos about a game i have not played (in 5 years) i just love the way how you make your videos. Thats why i am still subbed.
i loved cs 1.6 and css skyboxes. always watched them in spectator mode. i didn't know it was generated. i thought about how it was photographed and processed. i thought there are places in real life like that.
I love source 2 approach on realism it isn't in your face like unreal engine, it's mostly things that you won't notice very subtle and i really love that.
St. Marc and Lake are perhaps the only two maps in which we can see how L4D2 would look like in S2. The more I watch these videos the more I get envious as if there’s a game that would *_really_* showcase Source 2’s prowess, it’s Left 4 Dead.
I’m just glad they’re focusing on core gameplay because when youre unnaturally in the zone, you dont notice the background. Especially on Overpass but its cool to learn about all of this stuff
Thank you for asking the most important question about planes. How do we know if planes aren’t flat? We flat-planers have proof that when you spot a plane from the ground, they are in fact just flat and rendered to the real life skybox.
Easily accessible skyboxes are my favorite thing about Source 1 Valve games ngl. Often times they can tell alot of environmental storytelling without shoving it in your face, you really have to go out of your way to analyze it
Love to see you doing so well Philip. Watched you for years when you would roam around in a dressing gown in what appeared to be shared accommodation. I would Imagine that would be a distant memory now. For what it's worth well done
0:27 They've used an automatic form of creating bump _maps/normal_map based on the color channel of these textures You can clearly see that the windows on the right are BUMPED out of the glass surface that was supposed to be flat, because the colors of the original color map are brighter than the rest of the surface around the spot, so the automation detected that as being higher than its suroundings... There are many ways of getting bump maps wrong like this, and all of them are lazy Its kinda sad to see something like this coming from Valve, i know its a minor thing , but come on...
Midtown Madness! Good old days, no graphics, performance madness, just used to install and play and actually enjoyed game.. Nowadays I mostly watch graphics, performance rather than actually enjoying game like old days. Really miss them😢
okay philip you really got my ass at 5:10 with that transition between Vertigo and Underpass. I was zoned out and still looking at my monitor and when I zoned back I shook my head a bit and said "when the fuck did THAT happen"
4:41 I am not completely sure about this but I think the mountains in view are the Western Carpathian mountains located on the border between Slovakia and Poland. I believe the peaks "Kriváň", "Gerlach" and "Lomnický štít" can be identified in order from left to right as the three highest peaks, Kriváň being the first peak from the left, Gerlach being in the middle and Lomnický štít all the way at the right. Correct me if I am wrong though.
To Lake: Even Cry Of Fear had a better lake scenery in the part between the subway and the college part of the game in Stockholm. On the Goldsource Engine.
I agree that Lake would be a good candidate for making a terrifically improved looking skybox in Source 2, especially out towards the lake itself. In Sweden I've been to a few vistas from summer houses facing a lake that you can actually see the other end of, and it gives off a warm fuzzy feeling to look at. I wonder if they'll add other buildings neighbouring the same lake too.
I used to be interested in mapping for cs. I made a map for Source where crow were flying in skybox. Also rocks were falling in the beginning of the round. Also it were fy map with Famases.
I think the fact that the skybox image of buildings on the csgo overpass is the most generic image of Prague that repeats itself over and over again even though the map is set in Berlin just adds to the beaty of the map
As a german i'll have to give valve credit. The cranes doing nothing for the whole day is very realistic in Germany.
For a german, you are pretty humourous...to the point of almost, denying the fact that you are actually german !
:P
😂
💀
It always baffled me that Overpass, a map based on Berlin, had Prague as it's skybox
