Would you use this Apple Ecosystem? Which (if any) of the devices would you change?
Lytmi Black Friday & Cyber Monday Sale on 25th - 28th November - SAVE 20% in Lytmi Official Store: bit.ly/Lytmi-LukeMiani
Would change iPad to mini 5 as A12 is far more powerful and it fits the theme of tiny devices. 12-inch MacBook, try for the I5 with 16 GB RAM if possible. Longevity comes with better performance, and that's concerning just how long you'll hang onto said MacBook.
Since iPads are useless I would of bought AirPods or an Apple Watch
Great video! I woukdve subbed the iPhone 8 for an SE2 personally, and then maybe an iPad 6 for Apple Pencil support, but those are great picks!
it's so cheap in the states! damn why so expensive in Europe?
Would get the iPhone X for like $150 and the 8th gen iPad for like $230, think those would be a better value for money even if more expensive. And would also get a better specced 2017 12" Macbook.
As an iPad 5th gen owner, I feel they should've ditched it at iOS 14. It literally lags when changing the volume.
I also have an iPad 5th gen which is on iPad OS 15 and it doesn’t lag when I change the volume oddly enough. Could be cracked screen problem I don’t know.
I have an iPad air 2 on iPad os 15 and even that is quite fast.
it's iPadOS 16 that killed it, not 15
I use an iPad 5th gen every day with iPadOS 16 an it runs very well. Maybe you have a battery problem or something like that
I have a iPad mini 3 which is very old(I know) but Apple literally made it unusable by new software
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Luke, you do such an amazing job of exploring the used Apple market and recommending cheaper setups. Hardly any other tech UA-camrs out there do this, they all want you to spend thousands of dollars on the newest stuff from Apple even if you don’t need it. Kudos to you my man, keep up the great work.
Because of him, I was able to find my dream brand new Mac Pro Trashcan on ebay for $600 and Macbook Air 11 Inch in PERFECT condition fully specs for $300.
Even though I already have powerfull Macbook which is: 14 inch 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Pro with 10 Core, 1TB and 16GB RAM.
Facts who has 1000ths I don't I'm always on ebay
Same bro, budget n vintage gang all the way. A little bit of dusting and easy upgrades and everything is all good
Luke, you're lucky to have access to these products at these prices in the US. For those of us living elsewhere, it's tough to find pricing that comes close to the deals that you've found.
A dream I have is to have a macbook 12", the problem is that in my country it costs about 1000 dollars, used! Do you plan to sell yours?
@@dreascornelias7021 there's still shipping cost and import fees.
Totally true, you’re right
@@RaimardeAssisModesto it's really bad and underpowered
@@alegamer_real It depends on where you live. In some countries it costs way too much money to even build a PC with low end components
Here in my country (Germany) those 12 Inch Retina Macbooks still sell for around 300-350€ on the used market. (And I am talking about the 2015 ones, not even the 2017 models), the ipad and the phone can be found for around the same price like in your video.
Seems like this cheap ecosystem is really only possible in the US :D
Here in bulgaria the cheapest 12 inch 2017 is 700 euro
Just made a quick check myself and in my area the 2017s are about 400 to 500€. So that's pretty far off. Just the bottom and top covers with the lcd go for 250€....
No one would say a $150 Macbook that can take the latest OS is a bad deal. However, from what I am seeing on Ebay at the moment, Monday Nov 28, 2022, that deal simply does not exist -- not unless the item has some sort of damage.
cheapest I find are about $350 alone
You have to hunt for deals from schools, hospitals or offices trying to sell old equipment
I was able to snag a m1 MacBook Pro m1 for 550 including tax and everything on mercari jus the other week, hell of a deal lol
he got it "broken" in another video and the owner stated it couldnt turn on, he tried and it turned on for 150 dollars+ a new battery for 10 dollars
look for local Salvage and Surplus places. Universities often have them. Though at my local Surplus and salvage they do charge a bit more for MacBooks. You'll see most of them go for around 200 dollars
These are my favorite kind of videos learning from Luke I can afford the apple ecosystem without breaking the bank
I found a 12 inch MacBook in a recycling cart at my summer job at my local university. My job was to inventory all the computers that came into the office. They were all destined to be scrap (mostly iMacs and Dell PC's) and my supervisor told me if I saw anything I wanted to simply secure erase it and let them know and they'd remove the MDM and I could have it. Funny thing is the MacBook had a sticky note on it saying "Kaput" which for the uninitiated basically means dead. Also it apparently was part of a science lab but anyway imagine my surprise when I plugged it in and it booted right up into El Capitan. Immediately I asked my supervisor and he gave me the greenlight to erase it and give him the serial number to remove it from remote management. It was surprisingly specced out to with the BTO 1.3 Ghz Core m7, 8gb ram and a 512gb ssd. Still quite slow, but for free I ain't gonna complain
Lies
Can you prove it?
Pro tip:
Install opencore on that MacBook and install the Feature Unlock kext and apply the appropriate boot arg and you can get sidecar on that iPad
All this does is remove the flag that restricts your ability to share the screen. Mac OS just has a list of supported sidecar devices and shows the display as available if it matches that list. Feature unlock will allow you to just see the iPad.
This works for universal control as well.
Word of warning: iPads are generally fine as displays, but if your Mac doesn’t support screen sharing in that way, it is for good reason. My Late 2014 27” struggles when sharing to this same model iPad. The Late 2015 27” handles it like a champ.
Universal control is generally fine on either though.
Great content idea, Luke. Most helpful. Can you also do complete Apple eco-system for US$500 / 800 / 1,000? It would be good to know what upgrades can one get at different price points. That would be most useful for someone at particular budget.
This is the kind of content I like to see from you, Luke. Finding more of the value proposition of Apples ecosystem. You talked about missing features on older hardware for newer OSes, a video exploring which features and what the price would be to get hardware just modern enough to get those features would be really interesting.
If you really come to think of it, this is ridiculously cheap to get supported gear, maybe not very long but it will get a college student going. Plus the new OCLP will be able to support the latest OS. Of course 8Gb is not a lot of memory, but hey they still sell their new M1/M2 with it. What it boils down to is: How recent do you need your system to be (specifically need, not want).
The difference with M1 is that it has high performance swap capabilities which uses the SSD as a cache to effectively increase the amount of ram it has so it technically has 8 gigs of fast ram and however many gigs of slower ram.
This would be a great option for someone looking to try out the Apple ecosystem without spending a lot. The only downside is that these devices may not be supported when the new versions of iOS and MacOS come along.
Well, for sure the tablet and MacBook will be unsupported but the iPhone 8 might still be supported.
@@thetechrealist I am using that macbook right now for graphic design and i assure you this computer still goes hard, i dont know for how long it will still be supported for new versions but i dont see it getting too slow anytime soon!!!!!!
@@maremlopez6046 is it base model specs though? Also graphic design and computer programming aren't ram heavy. A photographer would find using the base MacBook quite a feat!
6 months later and apple has dropped support for literally every one of these products
At the present pace, Apple devices will start losing functionality in a serious way when they're roughly 3-4 generations behind in terms of the Os. Until then, even if you're 1-3 generations behind the device should still be perfectly usable in regard to apps and programs functioning properly.
Also if you come across an iPhone 8 or any used iPhone for a good deal and the battery health is 80% or lower, it’s not too expensive to replace the battery
Great video, Luke. How about a $350 budget for a macbook or mac mini? I love this video, hits the spot in these challenging financial times.
I really love the awesome camerawork in your recent videos! Keep up the good work.
Great video! I love watching these "budget" types of videos. It's fascinating to see what you can get that's actually usable for a low cost. I spent more money on just my iPhone than this entire ecosystem. Very refreshing to see this type of video as opposed to 99% of all the other tech videos just telling you to go and buy the latest. We trick ourselves into thinking we always have to have the latest and greatest. But no. We really don't. Good perspective here.
I’m an owner of a 6th gen iPad and really don’t plan on upgrading it anytime soon (maybe like 2 years from now). It’s still great for media, emails and general web browsing. Do not feel any lag at all for those activities.
Of course, I don’t depend on it for any other heavier stuff. I use my M1 MB Air with external display at work (the thing is a workhorse for its portability) and an iPhone 12.
Would definitely recommend it over the 5th gen!
You could just skip the ipad and put more money into a better mac or phone.
Ive seen iphone se 2 on amazon for like 170-180. I know its similar but you get a few more years out of it for not much more. But you definitely hit the nail on the head, dont need to go broke getting a decent set up.
I bought the original 12” MacBook base model when it originally came out. Overpriced? Yes. But I have loved it the whole time. It’s been perfect for what I need and surprisingly reliable. No issues yet.
The good thing about the old apple product is that they last in time and it all depends on what you use them for. Spending a lot money to get the newest model most of the time is just a state mind. Good video.
YESSSS!!! Haven't watched it yet but I know this is going to be AWESOME! Thank you Luke, I love these kinds of videos!
I got a 5th gen IPad to replace my ipad 2 off eBay for $80 (128gb space gray) and honestly it’s very good. Maybe our 2 devices are different but mine handles pretty much everything smoothly. When doing basic tasks it isn’t far behind a 9th gen like what my mom uses. Maybe not as quick as a newer iPad but it runs consistently, and lag/hang ups are very rare. Even when playing a big 3D (WOT Blitz) game it still handles it fantastically, my brother who has a M1 pro said that when he played on my iPad he didn’t even notice a huge difference between our 2 when in game. So while it may not be the newest i’m sure it runs far better than any other similarly priced tablet from 2017 would today.
If anybody is curious, other minimums for Apple products include:
Apple Watch: Series 4
Apple TV: HD aka 4th Generation.
And AirPods 2
The Apple TV HD 4th is so weird it gets v16 software. It's literally an iPhone 6 (not even 6s) inside.
I dare you to use all of these for a week.
This is a fantastic video on a proper setup for college students. Thank you Luke
My daily driver is a 13 in 2017 stock mbp, I’m still happy in Monterrey. I replaced the battery this year and is as good as new. I do software development and really punish this thing..Thanks for bringing attention to these devices which are still very useful.
hypothetically, buying the cheapest hardware that supports the latest software means that it is at the bottom of the list for the next round of future software version updates and support. paying more than the bottom rung theoretically buys you more time for further support and updates.
edit:
3g is being discontinued in certain cellphone markets. cell carrier support phase-out is another reason to not buy an older 3g phone that does not support 4g lte. the same pattern will happen with 4g moving towards 5g.
you’re paying for the useful life of the product per dollar that a cheap cost in these products may not actually save you money over time. while this appears appealing at first, the better options per dollar are usually in the mid-range area or even refurbished but at bargain deals.
Exactly. This is all just cheap junk.
I can tell you that 4g isn't going anywhere until 6g comes out but most of what you said is true.
You never buy the absolute bottom of the barrel unless you know for sure that you don't need the extra support.
4G will stay for a while
I have a question, how long does apple support security updates on old OS after a iphone/ipad/mac is no longer updating that device?
@@thetechrealist yes. i brought the 4g part to show there is a pattern going on, moving to the bottom rung of support. but you’re correct.
the 2017 MacBook isn't that bad, it might not be good for video editors but for doing light stuff it works pretty good, I had a 2015 MacBook at the beginning of this year and it worked pretty good for what I did, I wish apple would bring back the 12 inch MacBook and put a m2 chip in it, I would be first in line for it 🤣
Isn’t that bad for video editing you said lol
@@nikolan123 there fixed it
agreed - i have a MBP 2015 w broken screen that I just remote into from my iPadPro when i get that itching to use a “real” Finder and it’s able to compile Xcode (albeit slowly but it works) - it fills the gap nicely.
I bought a white iPad 5th-Generation new and it's been flawless. Yes it feels a little "clunkier" with each subsequent iPadOS update. I keep it at my family's summer cottage and it does a decent job with everything I ask of it.
I absolutely LOVE that 12” MacBook. Well done, mate.
If you’re a person that wants to do this kind of thing, for only a little more, you can get an iPhone SE 2, which is basically an iPhone 11 spec wise with an iPhone 8 body. It’s not a bad phone at all.
Luke, I think you should try and do a video on a full potato ecosystem under $400. When you say you can get a potato for the cost of a 2017 MacBook, it makes me think some of us might be overpaying for our potatoes. It would be cool to explore the market and see if you can find some more affordable, frequently overlooked options, even if it’s not spec-for-spud identical to the latest models.
Bought a 12 inch mb for my studies.
It is Super light weight, get me through a day and even basic first step programming was possible.
I really enjoyed it. Corona made it break 😅
Zoom, chrome and any other programm let it heat up and so i needed to sell 😩
This is the real reason am subscribed to this channel. I love his economic analysis.
Great info yet again! I looked on Decluttr and Back Market and am seeing more like $300+ in Good or better condition. Everyone should remember for $150 for the MacBook that was with a bad battery.
Also Luke, the 5th gen iPad does not have Apple Pencil support but the 6th gen does.
Nice segment! Thanks to you, I was able to resist buying a new iPad from Amazon this weekend. As you’ve said earlier, my Generation 6 iPad is just fine for now. (And if I had gotten a new iPad, it would have been a 9th generation rather than 10th.)
I use an iPad Mini 4, which doesn’t support sidecar. I get around this by plugging it into my MacBook and using an app called Yam Display. Works really well.
Always great. I love your videos and content.
i was planning on getting a 2017 macbook pro since it still had the latest OS and it met my minimum requirements
Beautifully done
First time I’ve ever watched a video and liked an ad! Lytmi for the win! 😂
I just got an iPad 9th gen on sale for $270 a week or so ago, and it’s crazy to think that for only an extra $80, I could’ve gotten a complete Apple ecosystem, instead of just my iPad and iPod from 8 years ago.
You could add AirPods and the total would still be less than AirPods Max
By the way, I believe that a m1 swap to 12 inch MacBook would be a very interesting project
would be borderline impossible. laptops are very restricted in terms of space that the only feasible way to make it happen is to fabricate an entirely new pcb, reverse engineer all the connectors and connections to the screen, keyboard, etc.
@@hanakomisa yes and all for a completely useless form factor. 12 inch laptops are ridiculously unusable for anything serious. If you want a machine for just web browsing, buy an iPad.
@@hanakomisa I don't know because they use an M1 in an iPad and the Macbook shouldn't be that much smaller.
@@GreatOne0815 okay but they made the chip and everything around it, we don't have that manufacturing capacity. plus also internal schematics
@@hanakomisa Someone could try. But Apple could do it. :)
Hi, Luke! As always, I LOVE this video! Are you able to make a video in which you use this ecosystem for 1 day? That would be so fun to watch! It would mean so much to me if you can reply, or even make the video! Thanks for always awesome content!
Now these are the content we like to see
Still on the 8plus and never regretted buying this phone. Still running flawlessly.
Thank you luke for showing us how to get in without paying $6000
I would recommend getting the se 2 over the 8, as it costs about the same yet is faster, has better cameras and will have longer software support
Great video idea! Love it
I love the Apple Ecosystem, but the only things I run now are an iPhone 13 pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S6.
I wish Apple kept up with Samsung but Samsung Dex and Samsung Notes are far too useful in everyday life. For Samsung Dex I also run a hub so I can plug in my tablet to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse to use it as an actual Linux desktop. Xbox game pass works great too.
I still have my 5th gen ipad and it’s so good. I don’t do anything crazy on it but it’s awesome and reliable
If you use Open Core Legacy Patcher to update older unsupported laptops to Ventura. Your laptop option grow tremendously.
Loving the 2017 MB 12" ... it's my daily couch driver :)
Great video as usual😃.I would use this Apple Ecosystem but the iPad definitely would be changed to a 6 gen or later model.
The reason why the 2017 MacBook Air can't run macOS Ventura is because it's a 2015 MacBook Air. Sure, it has a slightly better CPU, but it's still from the same generation (5th gen Intel).
Thank you for this
I do love that small form factor. I still have an old 2013 11" MacBook Air as a beater computer, though I'm running it with Fedora Linux since MacOS runs like garbage on it. It's a great laptop to take when I'm on vacation or something and I still want a laptop to do basic laptop things like watch Netflix or whatever but I don't need to get any serious work done. That 12" MacBook might be a good upgrade option.
windows would honestly be a better option than linux
@@RealEpikCartfrenYT Not if you care about performance.
@@sfoldy "performance" unless your computer happens to be _perfectly_ compatible with Linux, you ain't getting any. I had errors, compatibility issues, crashes, bugs occur on two Core 2 duo machines and a Pentium 4 Machine. Never doing Linux again.
Oh btw I recently tried using Ubuntu again, on an i3 system. Slow and unresponsive, unlike windows 10 on the same machine
@@RealEpikCartfrenYT Yes buying a computer designed for a Linux distro gives you the best possible experience. However, the beauty of Linux is that there are so many options, and there are distros designed to be lightweight and run better on older and less powerful hardware. If you are running the latest version of Ubuntu, it’s going to struggle on an 8-year old machine. Try searching for a version better designed for slower computers like a Core2 Duo.
Personally I would not buy a MacBook to experience Linux, I want to have Mac OS. Linux is for my ewaste laptops.
What would be a good upgrade (quality/cost) for my Apple Watch Series 3?
using that same macbook right now, its a good portable device and does the job well of being a device for general use.
Im using the 12inch as a daily driver. And when hard client works is being workded on, i use the M1 macmini. I luv the form factor, and basically. I can lay my work out on final cut timeline in the 12 inch... Then take my external hardrive over to the m1 to complete it. This is a good lil machine
I've been rotating through the apple eco, and its been pretty comfy. I'll buy one part every 2 years. Currently sitting on a MB pro 13 2017 (prevously MB 2011), ipad mini 2019 (from ipad air 2013), and iphone 13 mini 2021 (from original iphone SE 2016). It's great that apple supports their devices for so long, as I have only been out date for a total of 4 months across all Apple operating systems! Compared to my windows/adroid gear, I'd say its a heck of a deal. I'll buy an M2 2022 MB air next year.
I picked up a 2014 MacBook air 8gb i5 for $20 and while unsupported runs Ventura just fine, I've got my 5th gen iPad still and content consumptions A+ and I still use my 8+ as my second phone. None of these are my main devices but definitely are still useful day to day and if you keep your expectations realistic this set up is solid if you are not a power user by any means.
I bought the original model 12” MacBook. I know people report issues with them all the time, but I used it as my "primary after work” laptop for years, before upgrading to the M1 MBA. I couldn’t kill it. Now, if they would put Apple SIlicon in that form factor.
I would definitely upgrade the iPad in this ecosystem, but that’s it. The Mac & the iPhone are great values.
Aside from performance, the 12" MacBook was one of the best looking ones. So light and good keyboard (when it's working).
7:15 there's a possibility to use the iPad as an extended Display for your iMac or MacBook but doesn't have Sidecar support.
Luna Display is a possibility to use your ipad to extend your MacOs display. However it cost additionaly 120 Dollars to buy the USB-C Version. The MiniDP and HDMI version (only works on Windows system) cost just 60 dollars.
I am using 5th gen iPad right now. Is working well. It is not slow in my opinion. Only prob is the battery will need changing. What’s more it installed iOS 16.4.1 would you believe.
Iphone SE (2020) now on sale for $99 from Walmart and other budget carriers. So, its gets even better :)
Very interesting. More interesting than just looking at the latest gizmos
I'd been looking for a macbook for a little while but could not justify buying a new one so recently picked up a 2016 macbook pro in Mint condition for £300. VERY happy with it
good choice with the MacBook but would choose a $170 13" 2011 MacBook pro with 8gb ram and 256gb SSD any day. Nice video
iPad 5th is probably not the oldest to support 16.0, because mine iPad Pro 2016 (9.7 inch, A9X) also supports last iOS. And also pro 9.7 probably way better with laminated display and Smart Connector support
I mean he did say the oldest, or worst, or the cheapest, and the 5th Gen iPad is both the cheapest and the worst out of the bunch :3
But yeah the iPad Pro 9.7 would be way better. The display, audio and performance are worlds better, but it's also more expensive.
oldest / weakest chip
2015 iPad Pro is still supported btw
Famous iPad you have the only 9.7 pro ever produced
No sidecar is a dealbreaker. Such a great feature. But for somebody not spoiled by it, it’s a great budget setup for sure.
My best guess as to why Apple stopped support for the 2017 MacBook Air is because it was just the 2015 model, with a slightly overclocked 5th Gen Core i5.
While the 2017 MacBook is using a 7th Gen Intel CPU.
If anyone is having this volume button lag issue on the 5th gen iPad, just wait 15 minutes on the Home Screen (or do something light like watching a video) for about 15 minutes and it will feel lightning fast
Sound good I am checking them out now.
I'm still running a (mid) 2014 15" MacBook Pro, iPhone 7+ and a first gen iPad Pro...
We use that same program at my job. Its called phone check but we put the label on a phone bubble wrap bag and not the phone.
I bought an iPhone 8 Plus recently from a popular refurbished store. Does what I need it to do.
What a beautiful humble combination**** awesome that's basically what a person needs
I have a 2012 macbook, Ichanged the battery and she works good! Sometimes she overheats but not really.
Still running an IPhone 8 and a IPad Generation 6. Sort of slow, but certainly usable.
Hey Luke, It would be better if you could show how the devices works with each other in the ecosystem. Viewers will get an idea as to what they’ll be losing out on if they’re not opting for the newest and the greatest, Cheers.
Is it still safe to use a mid 2012 macbook pro, iphone6s+ and iphone7?
this is why you go to a pawn shop and also browse around on offerup to find great deals. I just bought a 2020 rose gold m1 macbook air in prestine condition from a pawn shop for 200 bucks and the only problem was that the os was glitched and needed a reinstall; and i didnt even need any flash drives. Oh yeah, and there are literally like 20 iphone 11s on offerup for maximum 250 bucks. Not to mention the 9th gen ipads in great condition in the pawn shop sitting there for just 170 dollars.
I have a 2017 Macbook Air. I can't seem to update to the latest software. No matter what I do.. any ideas? Thanks.
Something is up with the audio in this video. In watching on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Great video as always btw Luke thanks!!!
I use an iPhone SE 2nd Gen, and I love it.
My favorite thing was comparing my iPhone SE 2016 with my iPhone 13 Pro Max back during iOS 15 where they were both supported. (The iPhone SE was just an iPhone 6S in the body of an iPhone 5S)
i bought my iPad 5th gen brand new in 2018, still using it 4 years later, and I don't even think about upgrading to a new one. I will upgrade only if something bad were to happen to it, but even then replacement parts are gonna be affordable so I could just repair it myself.
As for iPhones, I would choose the X over the 8, simply because the X is more popular (they both were released on the same day) and it will probably continue supporting newer iOS versions.
What about MacOS Ventura? welp, third party patchers do exist (in fact, I have a 2008 Aluminum MacBook running Catalina as I'm writing this) so running Ventura is certainly possible on older hardware
Where did you get the battery for the macbook? Is there an ebay seller you recommend for parts? Thank you! Love your videos!
So I got iPad gen 9 that’s mean I should get the MacBook late 2013 right? Because I already got iPhone 8 so this is balance
where did you get the macbook. I can not find a good one with the same price as you have.
Luke, does Apple publish a MacOS support road map that detail dates for hardware and security updates?
Something like what Canonical publishes for Ubuntu Linux OS.
I'm rocking a 2012 macbook pro with the current OS using open core.
I use an iPhone 8 Plus (not an 8 but pretty much the same thing) and it literally runs perfect still and it’s not slow at all. My only issue is the battery, but i’ve had mine since December 2017 with no battery replacement and it’s now at 76%, so I could replace that and probably have a better experience.
It also would get an iPad 6 because of Apple Pencil support which the 5 I think doesn’t have.
