    I used an iPad Pro as my main computer for a few months. It’s great for most tasks but the few things that require a proper desktop OS for are frustrating as hell to do on iPad OS

      100% - using an iPad Pro as a main device is awesome ... until it isn’t. The final straw was when I needed to resize a PDF and print it . I shouldn’t be pinching to resize if I already know the dimensions I need.

Does it have a built in backlit keyboard for darker rooms and is it comfortable enough to type long Word documents/assignments on? Can you extend it to an external monitor? As a piece of hardware, I think I like the iPad more (more portable, more power, better battery life, fanless, no butterfly keyboard, pencil support), but if the iPad broke, I would still be able to use the Mac to get my work done. iPad is far superior for research and reading PDFs and any ebook based work. So definitely they shine in their respective areas. You CAN use the iPad like a netbook for typing and browsing and email, but obviously the ports on a MacBook Pro are superior for what it is also.
      Both together are the best option. Especially for the base model iPad and a used MacBook Pro. It’s literally cheaper than a new machine, and you get both.

    • @NFStopsnuf
      @NFStopsnuf 2 роки тому

      @@ghost-user559 for research I need up to 20 PDFs open at a time and at least 4 on one monitor, so an iPad is typically not feasible with its operating system

    • @ghost-user559
      @ghost-user559 2 роки тому

      @@NFStopsnuf Well for me that is a different phase of research. When I am reading specific text very deeply that is a different step than skimming and comparing 20 sources and compiling a bibliography. But you do have to have a certain workflow and mindset.
      For example going through one source at a time (which at some point is necessary to actually absorb information on a new topic) the iPad is perfect because as an ereader it excels at hard to read text because you can change the zoom and brightness and orientation in a tactile way very easily, so it is ideal for dealing with specific sources you need to be very familiar with.
      For broad strokes? Or research on a multitude of sources that you might just have to regurgitate for school or an essay or something? Yeah you probably want multiple monitors.
      But to me you wouldn’t want just one device anyway because they are focusing on different steps of the research process. Annotating individual sources? iPad. Compiling all your sources and weeding through your entire bibliography? Desktop computer.
      But only using one and you loose the advantage of the other.
      Try taking handwritten annotations on your multi monitor display? You cannot. Just like iPad does poorly with spreading out 20 documents all at once. They both have a different place in the research process.
      If I had to choose one I would use the computer, but the iPad basic is 299$ so no one has to choose only one anymore, they have become affordable devices to integrate into anyone’s workflow.

    This is a little bit off topic because it’s different devices, but I have been using an iPad air 2 with a folding Zagg keyboard case for years and while the ipad has all the limitations of it’s age that you would expect, but that Zagg keyboard case is so much better than any other tablet case out there I can’t figure out why no one else is doing it! The keyboard is comfortable to use, it sits on your lap like a laptop, it’s thin and light, and the battery life is incredible. I try to remember to plug it in every couple of months so I’m not sure how long it will go before it dies, but it lasts forever and I use it constantly. Apparently Zagg has quit making that case for newer devices too (why? Apple copyrights? I don’t know) but I can’t believe no one else makes something like this. I have used a folding case like the one you show and no comparison of comfort of the keyboard keys, etc. I actually originally bought this case at Goodwill before I bought my ipad just because I thought it might make a good bluetooth keyboard to use with my kindle tablet, even if it didn’t snap in. I bought a used iPad air 2 soon after and was pleased to see it coincidentally was the right size for my random case. I’ve replaced it once since then (for $19 new on eBay) and it’s going strong. The hinge broke on the first one, but I’m not particularly careful with it so they have been very durable.

The MBP I got REALLY cheap from someone on fb market that didn’t know much about it. Turns out the previous owner before they had it had locked it out somehow. I was able to get past that and basically do a complete reset and now it’s working perfect. Only issue is that it needs a screen replacement. It’s not horrible. It could actually be used as is without fixing the screen but I’m gonna get it fixed.

The extra battery life and content consumption options on the ipad fit my needs more. I also believe that from a budget perspective if someone were trying to start a channel on UA-cam that software to accomplish that would be easier to find on ipad and your trade offs would be less impact than the actual compute loss from an older gen macbook like in the video. Cool comparison!

Also got offers from several other ebay sellers to lower their price on other MBPs. I think they want to dump anything that will not get updates. 2015 and higher still supported on the latest update. However with a patcher you can still get latest Macos. For now.

    MacBook Pro unless you need the extra power. I've been using a 2013 i7 MBP attached to a 27" monitor and loving the double screen, the keyboard, and the options. Sure the 8gb of RAM can be an issue along with heat/fan if you try to do too much (too many CPU/RAM sucking apps) but for most tasks it works very well. iPad would be a poor replacement for me. I am likely to replace it with a M1X Mac mini soon though!

    It's not either/or for some of us. In addition to a pair of new M1 iMacs, which we use for most of our main solo work, my wife and I both have older MBPs (2012 and 2015) and a pair of relatively new (last year) iPads. When we're working together, facing one another across a table, we use the MBPs to access files we're reviewing and we use the iPads for a number of specialized foreign-language apps that are available to each of us individually for quick look-ups.

    While I prefer the way MacOS handles multitasking and just overall functionality for productivity tasks, if you are spending $400 on a computer, you’re likely going to only use one or two applications at a time and the iPad does that type of multitasking incredibly well.

    • @User-cb4jm

      Does it run common desktop apps? Can you easily do some budgeting on (desktop w/ formulas) Excel with a precise trackpad? Does it have a built in backlit keyboard for darker rooms and is it comfortable enough to type long Word documents/assignments on? Can you extend it to an external monitor? Can you move your windows around and multitask in a meaningful way? Do you have a proper file manager? Can you god forbid connect a USB or external drive to it easily? Only one machine here can do that and it isn't the iPad.
      I think the average user doing regular productivity work will be more annoyed by the walls they run into with an iPad as their main computer, than they would on a new budget pc or used high-end Windows laptop/Macbook. After all many of us did those same things in 2014 with a regular desktop OS, the processing power is adequate for basic productivity work. The iPad is limited not by raw processing power but software limiations.

    Nice video. I've recently made the transition from carrying an iPad, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and stand to carrying a laptop. I mostly used my iPad for text, email, phone calls, FaceTime, and media consumption. Then I remembered I had a Late 2014 MacBook Pro lying around. My laptop bag got heavier. But my everyday setup is cleaner and easier to use. Due to my low demand on the MacBook, I haven't experienced any performance issues. Being that both devices are performing the same low demand task, my MacBook is definitely faster. But then again, it may be that I am more efficient on the MacBook. Just create desktop shortcuts to your favorite websites, change the icons to you liking, then an old MacBook can be a perfect couch buddy.

    I am still using a 2015 13 inch retina macbook pro. And I have the latest entry level ipad as well as an Ipad pro 2017 10.5 model. While I absolutely love my iPad's and have a lot of use for them they simply lack the fluidity of the macbook, even one as old as the one I am typing this message on. The Eco-system and ease of use of a macbook pro is simply unbeatable. For the record I also have one of the touch bar macbook pro's and I still use the 2015 one more. That said, there are things I prefer to do on the iPad, such as reading comic books and ereader apps. Photo editing may be better on a iPad but still do it on the Macbook mostly using preview believe it or not. Bottom line is, Macbooks are still fantastic machines even ones that are 6 years old. If I wanna do heavy lifting an M1 Mac Mini for about $550 is there for me.

LumaFusion was supposed to get audio auto-sync "sometime this summer," but nope. I'd never buy a 2014 Mac, nor would I upgrade my iPad to a Gen 9. With an M1 Mac Mini I could run FCP and Compressor to get good-looking small files out of Dolby Vision footage. PLUS Macs are more fun - file management in iPadOS is awful, especially if you aren't in an all-Apple environment (no PCs allowed). So - Mac, Mac, Mac.

It will come into its own using the Apple pencil on MS White Board and OneNote, as I teach engineering + it is a second screen with sidecar etc.. As I have a personal smart keyboard and pencil already, and my Uni gets decent discounts for staff and students, the basic 2021 iPad is a bargain. I'm a value seeker so have an iPhone SE2, which is also great value and acts as a mobile hotspot. Given you can get both the new iPad and an iPhone SE2 for less than a new iPhone 13 - these are bargain and high quality products. I am looking forward to trying center stage as well.

    If you are going to use the old mac for a short time then you should opt for the MacBook, but if you are going to use it for a bit more longer then you should opt for the iPad because Apple now has a pc performance iPad (iPad pro m1) which is more capable than what the iPad os is meant for so they will eventually give the iPad os more multitasking capabilities and professional apps like Davinci resolve. And if that is the case then the iPad will receive multitasking capabilities ect in a few years and will surpass some more expensive new laptops.
