to everyone who just assumes the previous owners were evil people: yes, there is a good chance they simply didn‘t care enough to do better by him. But I did just watch another dodo video about a cat in a similar situation. The previous owners had alzheimers and forgot they already fed him. They kept feeding him BECAUSE they loved him. Could be similar for this dog. Could be a relative took him to the vet/shelter when things got bad, someone who didn‘t realize this dog still had a chance at a pain-free life. Doesn‘t mean this IS his story. But it COULD be. We don‘t know. Whatever happened I applaud this woman for seeing his potential and helping him realize it. And of course the dog for being awesome!
i find it a bit weird always, we have 2 cats at home and they can eat whenever they want, only thing they dont always get is the wet food which they get in the morging, but my cats arent overweight and can care for themselfs i guess???
@@liljon0111 I‘ve always had the same experience with my cat. She‘s always been on the thinner side and she‘s always had free access to dry food. Only recently we switched to wet food as she‘s now 18 and while she still has all her teeth, her stomach is sensitive now and she couldn‘t keep the dry stuff in any more. So now she has free access to wet food and we‘re struggling to keep her weight up at a healthy level (she was really thin a while ago, we fed her fresh meat as a bonus and we‘ve just gotten it back up again). I‘m guessing the difference is that she is used to free access, so she never unlearned listening to her body‘s signs. Animals and humans can unlearn that and lose the sense of fullness. Also if an animal has experienced having to wait for food or „food running out“ when they were hungry, they can start eating more and quicker when food arrives, the logic being: the quicker I eat the more I get before the dish is empty again and I go hungry. Also, the metabolism changes to storing fat mode when the body is under stress for example because of a perceived food shortage, one of the reasons most diets don‘t work at all. It might also be that the feed they are giving him just isn‘t the right feed. There are special feeds for castrated low-active indoor cats, they are more expensive than the low-budget supermarket feed, but it‘s the difference of living on cheap fast-food all day or splurging on healthy weight-watcher meals. Especially with a cat like this one I would definitely change the feed immediately. With the much smaller amount of feed they are supposed to give him the expenses shouldn‘t actually be any higher than before ...
Same my cat can eat as much dry food but gets 1 wet food can a day and she lays around all day but is pretty skinny I think it's just that she is getting older as a 16 year old cat.
One of my great-aunts had never had a dog before and got a mini schnauzer as a companion animal. She filled her dog's food bowl up to the top three times a day because that's how she ate. Poor dog weighed 30 lbs at its maximum; it was only after she talked to a vet who explained how much dogs actually need to eat and how often did she fix things. She felt terrible; thankfully her dog lost enough weight to be healthy.
Why would you say “hopefully”? And “…” obviously he’s taken care for, if he was with his old owners he would be dead already and have a heart attack from his weight
@@hapwn just a lot of walks and eating better. Losing weight is not hard no matter what species you are it only requires a caloric deficit and that isnt hard people just make it look harder so youll spend money on a good coach and those businesses that sell dinners to you that are "healthy alternatives" to unhealthy food and are usually bad. maybe a caloric deficit but still mostly all carbs and sugars so it isnt healthy. the important part is macros and that isnt hard
@@louisasmiles There's always a possibility - but people shouldn't have pets if they aren't able to care for them. The animal suffers just as much, no matter how well meaning the owner is.

I'm so glad that woman had the motivation to give him a second chance at life.

@@melissak.8385 hmm not sure if he's purebred! [Beautiful none the less] But those ears of his don't scream Golden to me. Not criticising though, it definitely add to his adorableness. It’s because they are in pain their bones joints can’t handle that much weight and probably didnt really have the resources to help him at the shelter glad he was adopted and saved though
Hope the old owners don't get another pet. Poor guy was pretty dead in the eyes in the first shots, this lovely lady not only saved his life, but gave him a real life and quality of life!
Look at him!!! All that he has accomplished-can’t imagine someone wanting to put him down, even when he was morbidly obese he had that light in his eyes. So happy for him.
I totally understand, who wants to play with a fat pup? When my dog turned 4 we put him to sleep to get a new puppy because my kids said he wasn’t as fun anymore, can you really blame working moms like me for trying to take care of my kids?
why would you call a woman mom of an animal ? like i understand that dog is like a family but why do people use word "daddy" and "mommy". It sounds bit wierd.
I imagine when you have a dog like that, you have to constantly explain to people that his previous owners let him get that fat, and you're trying to help him.
I am stunned that this dog was able to lose 100 pounds in a year. What an incredible mom he has to be able to guide him through that! I hope he is still healthy and happy.
I hope ppl watching this will spread the message that it isn't cute or funny to make your pet obese. Obese pets are 100% the fault of the owner being too lazy to bother with a proper diet.
@@mrs.h2725 i think it’s not even laziness. It’s just that some people should not take a dog in the first place. When you’re not ready to exercise with a dog every day, get a cat. Put the cat in the garden, it lives on it’s own, just put food and water, no need to worry about exercising with it. Dog is different, people should really think about what kind of owner they want to be, before picking an animal. Even picking a bird is cool, if you don’t have time to really exercise with your pet.
Wolf yeah. People don’t realize pets are a lot like children. Yes you want them to be happy and you want to spoil them, but you have to give them boundaries and rules
Why didn't she blame the owner in the beginning of the video then? She litterally said: 'I think he was loved by his previous owners but they didn't know he was overfed and under exercised'

Patrick McCallion I guess you could call this a sort of abuse because it’s not good for his health. My Nan had two staffs that she fed chicken and rice every single day. They were both heavily over weight and eventually died because their health was so bad.
It’s so sad that they even thought about putting him down they just didn’t want to go through the effort I’m very happy for Kai and this woman they are heroes
Well to be fair the life of a severely overweight pet is like the guy in spongebob who lives in eternal pain. There is a point where putting down a pet seems like the only option
Platonic Waifu exactly... I can’t believe that people actually over fed him to the point that he became morbidly obese and then they thought “oh, we don’t want a fat dog.

I just love the fact that you’re helping a dog and I wish every single adult person was as caring as you dogs are just amazing animals they are just I love them I could not love anything more than I love dogs when I grow up I’m gonna have a ton of dogs and I’m gonna rescue dogs like you did I’m just so inspired by this video I wish people could be like you.
This poor chunky boy was going to be put down. I'm so glad she saved him not once but twice. She gets a Gold Star sticker from me!
Thats literally offensive
@@inhebeginning2570 what?
@@inhebeginning2570 how tf is that offensive
@@inhebeginning2570 ok I'm convinced that you may just be a troll

Imagine if your parents never came back 😦
And people think overfeeding animals isn't abusive. Smh
They should look at this, but then again, look at how Kai walked and lived. Lots of people who walk & live like that.
@@michaelminugh5357 the only things that are obese are humans, or because of humans anyway. Imagine not going on hikes or playing frisbee in the park. Imagine being in pain and out of breath walking up a flight of stairs. That's no way to live. For humans or animals.
Rhavy The Crazy The owner is always to blame. Especially a person with Alzheimer should never have control over another being.
Kids too
Kyra 😂
I'm SO PROUD of his care taker! She did an amazing job giving Kai a new, happy life.
Maybe the former owners didn’t realize?
Come on, a blind person could tell. This is just animal abuse. In a different form.
Yeah but not with bad intentions, that's what she's trying to say
John Rankin, I really don’t believe her intentions matter.
@@danieldionne2037 no, they don't matter in a case like this. But clearly the trainer in the video understands that there's nuance to the situation and that the previous owners weren't horrible people or anything just misguided
@@johnrankin7135 As I wrote somewhere before, this is a case of false sign of love. It happens also to kids when parents give them too much sweeties to show they want to make them happy.
@@RioMuc yeah that's not how psychology works all of the time though.
Dogs OG owners: *feeds him too much*
Also dogs OG owners: oh no he’s too fat, we should put him down. Don’t know how this happened
well they just fed him as much as he wanted, which is fine if there are not a fuckton of starches, but with the starches, the insulin levels go up, so the fat gets stored rather than being burnt for energy.
@n a kinda mean
@n a kinda mean be nice
@n a wrong i can do that. Which makes it difficult for me to gain weight with the usual ways.
Aneiya Thomas People aren’t nice on the internet.
Everyone: In awe at the sheer size of this lad
Everyone at the end: In awe at the sheer dedication of this lad
If Kia’s previous owners did love him then they wouldn’t have decided to put him down. I’m so glad he was saved
@taiyasreindeer true, but you can't fix being blind or deaf for your dog. This video is proof his weight issue was fixable and they just took the easy route.
People have to put dogs down and it breaks their heart. If you’ve never walked out with a collar in your hand, don’t comment on the subject. I had to go identify my father after his heart attack, and it felt the same as putting my golden down.
