WIzez is back, had me worried LOL. All Facts Spoken
I hate the narrative from all the other analyst, talking like we betrayed Trey and we failed him. He got hurt at the wrong time, and option 3 was way better, I posted last week that he was struggling to take the backup role. There was nothing to really add to why this didnt work out. The 49ers just found the QB that runs their offense exactly how they wanted to.
Simply put, Purdy played like what we hoped Trey would develop to. We didnt fail him, we sacrificed all our picks, we let him sit his first year to learn, and we gave him the keys as promised the next season, meanwhile still planning on giving the job back to him regardless what happened last year after he got hurt.
I am more concerned about the Kicker than what the backups are doing. I am hoping we get Crosby, put Moody on the practice squad.

Needed to take some time to reflect on the wild Lance and Purdy situation. (And other videos) Didn’t want to give rash judgement.
Kyle and the niners tried their best to give lance the opportunity to be successful while also winning. While their plan wasn’t successful it wasn’t because the niners betrayed lance. There was no good or bad people here everyone was trying their best. Luckily for niners they backed into their franchise qb in my opinion with Purdy .
I’m getting concerned about moody , especially given injuries. Crosby would be a nice addition!

I think it's talent. Time in the saddle helps but Lance is not good at hitting moving people with a ball. It's that simple. If Lance play a lot and learn how to play in the NFL while playing the NFL, he'll be at best a Dak Prescott (who is not that amazing of a QB either). Purdy has generational talent, Lance has not.

It is not just that in college he had a weird inefficient release that hurt the velocity on his throws.
After he got drafted, with the 49ers blessing, spent all offseason with a professional throws coach and completely fixed his mechanics improving his velocity.
Really shows how fantastic he mentally for quarterbacks. Was drafted last which he did not care was happy to take opportunity and do everything to succeed. The way Purdy handles adversity is truly incredible.

I think Lance will always be a better pure athlete, which will take him a long way as a QB. Purdy seems to have a difficult to quantify football sense that some QBs never really develop. He also seems to be very coachable, which a lot of people are not. We'll see.

All the Jimmy G haters ripped on him for getting hurt all the time. Guess what, Trey Lance was hurt most of the time with a broken finger and broken ankle. 2 seasons out. Not the 49ers fault. Don't get greedy and think you're better than you are.
In what world does a guy play so little throw so few passes and think he's NFL ready?
Trey needed a kick in the ass growing up because when he got it from Kyle he didn't know how to handle it and threw a hissy fit.
PM by comparison threw 1,349 passes in college with his last 2 years attempting nearly 600 passes each season!
Nearly double what Trey attempted in one season. PM attempted 400% more passes in college than Trey.
But he didn't have the ego that Trey had and PM knows he needs to work on things. Trey said his mechanics were fine.

That said, I can't remember the last time I was this excited and rooting for a young athlete like Brock. My only issue is Purdy will no longer be the “unknown” QB this season teams will know his game. There will come a time when he is going to have to be heroic to win a big game. We have to see if he came do that. Also the Kyle Shanahan does make QB’s look great, but he also gets them hurt. With Lance, the 49ers gambled big time and lost. Kind of reminds me of that year when we needed a QB and had the #2 pick with Patrick Mahomes available and we went with (consults records) Solomon Thomas. Neither of those first round picks is on the team today.
So, the 49ers have some issues picking in the first round. They did grab Bosa in that round, but that might just be a broken clock thing.
Luckily, there isn't a team in the NFL that drafts better in the late rounds than the 49ers. I don't understand how that is possible, but its working out Purdy okay.

the secret to understand the NFL draft is the draft is based on guesswork. You take a guess. It may be good, it may be awful, it may be awesome, it may be meh... You take educated guesses based on the limited info available at the time.
Most (almost all) of the household names in the 49ers team today were drafted. Even though the Niners seem not that good at draft, they're still one of the best. And there are still guys that left that I miss (like Trent Brown and Deforest Buckner). If a team hits every single pick, you have a contender in 2 seasons lol heck if you hit 7 picks in 2 years you have a great team already.

At least with Lance, there was potential, it just didn't work out. OJ's knees were basically shot and he was washed up when the 49ers traded for him.

You mean 17-time national champion (nine at the FCS level) NDSU that has won it's last six games against FBS schools - all on the road - the most recent being against No. 13 Iowa? Yeah. They get a few good players.
That said, it makes life pretty easy for a guy like Lance who ran a run-first offense against teams that were usually greatly overmatched, talentwise. He only threw 18 passes per game in college.
I think the jury is still out on whether Fields will ever be good. All off season we got to hear about how much he developed at the end of last year. I don't consider a quarterback running the ball more frequently to be "quarterback development." It's more like, "We can't fix the problem."
Parsons is doing a heck of a job in Dallas. If his escapades in State College are any indication, he'll be incarcerated before he reaches year No. 5.
      Take care.

The 49ers management, like everyone else, fell victim to misunderstandijng what makes a great QB great. They bought into the "He's big, fast, big arm, strong, a real dual threat" BS. That is all physical talent whixch is the most important quality for a RB, WR, LB but it the least important quality for a QB. A QB must have the cerebral talent that no one else has to play that position. When we think of the great like Brady, Montana, Manning, Etc do we ever think of how they were more physically talented than anyone else? No, we never think that. In fact we still make fun of Brady for that draft pic but we sure as hell think of him as smart, able to read a defense, calm in the pocket, accurate, and poised. Forgetting that lead everyone to believe that Lance would be great and we were all wrong. What Purdy has remonded us of is what it really takes to be a ghreat QB. He has all the quailities to be great while Lance does not. We all bought that Lance would be great when he has only thrown 581 passes since he started High School.

Athleticism, you cannot have too much of it as long as it's not a substitute for proper QB skill set:
There is a place for running for your life and throwing that heroic ball on the run. Sometimes things goes wrong while the game on the line.
As long as a QB don't rely on it, I am perfectly happy with him having a cannon arm and being a heck of a runner.

Do they do that a lot with white QBs? Or are they still assuming that if they take a black QB he'll likely be so deficient in the pocket that he'd better be able to run? Most SB champion quarterbacks still aren't great runners. They're just smart runners.

  • @cobbler88
    @cobbler88 8 місяців тому +1

This situation is less about Trey Lance and almost completely about the 49ers being so incredibly stupid as to give up what they did to draft him.
There were a lot of us at the time pointing out the obvious folly of taking him and Wilson high in the draft. With Wilson it was the fact that his only good season at BYU was the one in which they were able to cobble together a schedule form scratch because of COVID, then proceeded to compete against a slate that was about 15 games under .500 overall with the exception of East Carolina, which beat them.
For Lance it was roughly what was repeated here. He was a guy in whom only one FBS school was interested as a quarterback. I believe it was N. Illinois. He then competed against lesser competition at the FCS level in a run-first offense against teams that were almost always greatly overmatched by the Bison. He averaged only 18 passes per game in college. It's also worth noting that while him playing 19 college games may seem like a decent amount of experience (if not the best), 16 of those were in one season through the FCS playoffs. He threw only one pass (but ran eight times) in two games as a freshman, and was 15/30 for 149 yards in his lone game as a junior before things got shut down. He ran 15 times in that game.
Injuries aside, he was always going to take 2-3 years to become serviceable. If you wanted to play him before that, you weren't thinking straight. It's a little different with the Colts. While Lance has the "luxury" of having not played much, the chances are that in his 4th season he'll still be considered to be a possibility, while the book will likely have been written on Richardson - who was going to be a project even had he returned to college - after HIS first three seasons.
To be honest, I would take notice as an NFL GM and have my eye on any guy who started at least a couple of seasons at a P5 school to take late - or after - the draft every year.
    Take care.

Let’s go back 4 decades.. when many of these commenters weren’t even alive yet.
Enter a young qb named Joe Montana….. not very big, but possessing good college level experience. And a fire inside him. Brady wasn’t very big either. Tall but skinny. But he had the same fire.
He didn’t have a cannon arm. But he was accurate, decisive, dinked and dunked while always moving the chains. And winning. He fit Walsh’s system and used all his weapons wisely. That guy won 3 SB for SF. Brady won 7 like that. Neither were projects that needed development… unlike Lance.
Both are hall of fame legendary caliber QBs. It’s very doubtful that even with more coaching Trey will even get close to that. But we shall see..
Too early to tell for BP, but there’s definitely similarities to many great ones. It’s not about size or potential. It’s about heart, courage, good knowledge and execution. Purdy has all of that. Trey? So far, not even close.
The true great ones have it from the start. No need for excuses here. Either you show it early or you don’t. Trey definitely has not. You could name many other qbs that also showed it early and took it to the higher level.
Hey.. all good. It’s just entertainment. Look at it this way… he made lots of money for being very indecisive and never showing very much. He was given sufficient chances. He apparently doesn’t have the ‘it’ factor that Montana and Purdy do. He was a bad pick and a mistake that SF finally realized.
    Time to move on.
Don’t cry because he’s gone, lol… he asked for the trade. He’ll be third string somewhere else now. Trey will still make more money than you..for just being mediocre . Watch

      @Wizez  9 місяців тому +2

I enjoyed reading your comment. I think you highlighted something I’ve started to reflect on more deeply and that’s the idea of drafting a players ceiling than what he is. If you go watch Purdy tape compared to other QBs in college he looks like an earlier pick, but due to size and maybe question about athleticism 7th round. But Lance who was opposite physical gifted but low production resulted in 3 overall for hope.
All this is to say I think when niners hit they hit because they base it off solid evaluations on play than projections .
I think Purdy has the it factor, as well as Steve young pointing it out.

It's a myth that Kyle can win with any QB. Look at the years when Jimmy got injured and before they traded for him. They barely won like 4 games

athleticism does not mean a thing if you can't read the field and go thru your options. Bust

Trey Lance has a higher GPA than Purdy.
Trey Lance also had a better combine showing.
Who cares that Purdy came in at 262, Kurt Warner was UNDRAFTED and beat Mike Shanahan and Brian Griese in the Superbowl.
Brock Purdy does have a higher GPA than Kyle Shanahan!
Jed York should have hired Mike Holmgren. He's over Andy Ried.
Kaepernick should had stayed but after being coach by Jim Harbaugh the Cardinal. Why would Kaepernick want nepo-baby Shanahan Jr.!
Kaepernick the face of the Superbowl and NFL regardless of a NFL contract! He's the face of Nike and that's every jersey that's going to be at the Superbowl! 🤣🤣🤣

Trey wasn’t willing to wait. Trey was paid. Failed and bailed. So basically, he was paid a contract was never guaranteed a starting position and then quit when he couldn’t take it

He did request a trade but he needs experience. Something Brock and Sam made impossible on niners. The best thing for Trey was new scenery with low expectations.

Then blame trey, trey didn’t want to stay , he asked for a trade , without ever earning the starting position , he has no one to blame but himself

😂😂😢😮 Thank you Cowboys, taking Trey, his cap hit, n 4th rd pick. Someone likes the Niners. Good Luck Trey. Write the rest of your story. Niners gambled n loss. Tried to get as much as they could. What's done is done. Everyone makes mistakes in the draft. Bears have spent six 1st rd picks on QBs. Fields n Jones haven't established themselves yet. Those want to fired Lynch n Kyle. You have to look at their whole tenure. Bad picks, Thomas, Kinlaw?, Foster, maybe Trey, etc..Good picks, Bosa, Armistead, Buckner, Warner, Greenlaw, Samuels, Aiyuk, maybe even Brock if keeps getting better, etc.. FAs signings, Williams, cWard, many DT/DE role players, etc. Trade, Cmc. UFAs RB that help Jimmy n company to SB. Management of cap, letting go good players they can't keep, but finding replacements. Management of IR, pup n practice squad for depth n backups. Niners were on that coaching carousel after the Walsh era coaches until found Harbaugh n Kyle. Don't want to back there. Are we tired of getting to playoff. One player is not worth Lynch n Kyle. Tampa traded SYoung because he wasn't good for them. But Walsh saw something. He was right. But Walsh thought Druckenmiller was good too. One n done. Nobody is perfect. Looks like Tarzan, but plays like Jane. Sorry Jane, no disrespect. Just not, NFL level. Kyle system is considered one of the best. He reached 2 SB, with 2 different QBs. Niners have won 4-5 division titles. Niners were on their 3rd QB, but still made playoff. What coach could do that? Time to move on. Shine when given the opportunity, or go home. Just win baby. Go Niners.

To know why Trey Lance failed and Brock Purdy succeeded is a simple analysis. Since Brock Purdy's last snap in High School and his first snap in the NFL he played in 48 games in 4 years. Trey Lance played in just 19 over the same time period, last HS snap to first NFL snap. Which means he played just one year of post HS football before he was drafted #3 overall. Anyone should have know that Trey didn't even know the basics of defensive coverage because he never had to; he has tremendous athleticism but as both Brock Purdy, Jimmy Garapolo, and Matt Ryan proved, Kyle Shanahan's offense does not rely on the athletic talents of the QB. No, it is all about making quick decision and delivering the ball with accuracy; you don't need a crazy arm like Pat Mahomes because you'll never be asked to make any of those throws. It was a monumentally bad decision to draft Trey as high as they did, because he was always going to take 2-3 years to be ready to play in the NFL. Oh well.

The comment that Purdy does'nt have a strong enough arm, if I remember right, they said the same thing about Joe Montana.
