- Doing an upgrade from 200 to 400 amps in a 5500 sq foot home in Thornton in a neighborhood managed by an HOA. To add complications to this service, we' were expecting snow.

Great video. Something we dont see often is a 400Amp upgrade. You know your stuff and nice to hear your thoughts. That 2TC Copper is a biatch to run and bend. I hope you have a helper with this job. Also noticed 2 trucks. Nice!
My buddy upgraded to 400 he did it himself I helped best part was he had overhead lines. No charge by the utility to upgrade the lines.

Great solution for your Service Equipment; using two 200A Main Disconnects. While as many as 6 Main Disconnects could have been installed in that same enclosure under the 2017 NEC and earlier versions, you will need to spend the extra $1200 for the single 400 Amp Main Breaker if/when the 2020 NEC is adopted for that jurisdiction. AND, make sure that the panelboard will accept 200 AMP branch breakers if that is the requirement; many 400 Amp panelboards are limited to 150 Amp branch breakers. OR, house that 2nd 200A Main Disconnect in a separate enclosure.

Thanks for sharing! I have a question about the subpanel inside the house, does it need its own main breaker ? Or once you have a breaker on the main the subpanel no longer needs a main breaker. I hope to hear from you soon, thanks again!
the delays are crazy. i'm in ny and had my 100A upgraded to 200A in august. still waiting on my new meter in mid november.

@@tedlahm5740 no, we looked up our account on the website. the meter readings all read 0 for the time it was missing. they billed us similar to our previous usage. i had to go out of my way to get them to come out an put in back in, typical of the times we live in i'm afraid
Would like to know if that is a Siemens panel. Is it less expensive to go with a 400-amp breaker as opposed to using two 200-amp breakers and installing a second service panel from the extra 200-amp main? Great info, thanks.

Good luck with those seimens arc fault breakers. We've had to go back to customers houses for breakers tripping on vacuums, fridges, washing machine, etc. Terrible breakers

I have a question or asking for advice my house has a 200amps panel.
I am doing New construction a 750 saft ADU (2 bed and 2ba) all electrical And a New constrction, a 500 saft JUDA (1BED and 1bad) all electric
Can I have 2 - 200amps panels with one meter or Should I have one meter with a 400 amps panel.
If I have the 400 amps I need to upgrade my 200amps and reconnect the main house and have two sub panel. How much can that const.
What are your recommendation to for best result and fest cost

Why couldn’t you install that jbox on the outside of the home? Maybe a bit higher up. So that the jbox wouldn’t be on the inside?
So if I go to 400 from 200 amps can I add a second service panel next to my current 200 amp panel to handle the amps? Obviously putting in a new 400 amp meter outside.

saw the whole series... thank you. why would anyone need 400 amps? what is your customer running? what did they do? buy a castle?
Actually it isn't hard these days. if our house uses a tankless electric water heater, the biggest ones can draw up to 150 amps when in use, and even a more pedestrian one can easily draw 70 to 90 amps. If you happen to have an Electric Car as well, and the highest rated AC outlet for it, 70 amps, and both items are drawing full load current at the same time that say a 50 amp AC is running, and say you also have stuff cooking in an electric oven/range, drawing 30 amps, and also a 30 amp dryer running, you will very easily exceed 200 amps. even if only for a short period of time. In fact id say the increasing prevalence of all electric vehicles is going to be the biggest thing that is going to push for 400 amp services in the future.
@@ryuukeisscifiproductions1818 That’s exactly what I was going to explain to folks. EV’s are becoming more prevalent nowadays. I own two EV’s - pretty soon 3, when the CyberTruck Giga factory is complete. So, I’ll need to seriously think about my 200amps being upgraded.

@@ryuukeisscifiproductions1818 With 80 amp continuous (100A breaker) chargers like the Ford F150’s charger coming into the scene, I think 320A meters are going to have to become the standard. Like a 200 or 225A panel for the house loads and a dedicated 100A breaker enclosure or fused safety switch for the charger.
@@ironmatic1 Yeah, that's a hefty charger. Though i will point out that as an electrician myself, I have only ever seen 225 amp service on three phase service, never on single phase

Running into this a lot in my area pole want duel e/v chargers best way up the service run one for e/vs and other for existing service I'm not a pro but Peterson has given this handyman spome good advice ideas backed up by pros I know
