Thanks for such a great video, first time I saw a video on setting an Annual Calendar in great detail. Got a Aquanaut myself and would love to add a Annual Calendar or Worldtimer. Great job.
Hi fespo276- glad you liked it, I really enjoying putting the clip together today. I'm keen on adding a 5127 (classic Calatrava dress piece), a 5712 to complement my AP RO, and a 5960. That said, this has been my 'grail' for many years since I saw it in the flesh for the first time in 2008 @ BaselWorld and am completely content for it to be my 'only' Patek, if that should ever be the case :)
Yes, shockingly so as well! I purchased this back in August 2013, and I wore it till 1st Jan 2013; on my wrist during the day, resting at night (various positions). I noticed in that time the 'overall' difference in time keeping against the atomic reference I'd set it was incredibly small. Of course, this is no indication of its daily variance, which I haven't tracked. By far the best performing of all the watches I've owned, including a host of Rolexes/Omegas in the past.
Thanks for the very kind comments bdaly3 - two friends of mine have the Aquanaut, one has it in steel/rubber (5167) and the other has it in rose-gold. A very tempting piece and it was on my list for a while, although I've decided to go for the 5712 instead; that said, I'm sure I'll gravitate to getting one at some point. It's so slim and (the steel/rubber) version just vanishes off the wrist; completely discrete, and the clasp is just fantastic.
I've got an Orbita Sienna watchwinder in Teak and use this when I'm rotating other pieces; keeping a complication 'wound' isn't that hard really. Just make sure you have a really good winder; cheaper ones tend to over wind watches and/or do not allow enough resting of the mainspring tension.
The stylus that comes with the watch is 18k gold. It shouldn't scratch anything. Using a toothpick could cause a microscopic or larger shard to fall or work its way around the setting buttons. That's an expensive repair.
Hi N Grover - well, one must always exercise caution. That said, even the service tech at Patek Service centre used loads of toothpicks. Even to reset the piece. That said, I do see your point. Food for thought! ua-cam.com/video/0kT2Azn-hTU/v-deo.html
“A toothpick is the recommended tool” Jesus christ why does every idiot think he/she is an expert in watches. The toothpick is not “recommended” at all. If a part of the tip breaks into the movement and gets stuck in the pusher, it will severely damaged the watch. The included tool (which is included for a reason) is plated 18kt gold sized exactly for the pusher.
Fabulous reply - This would make Patek service centre staff idiots as well, as I have seen them use a simple toothpick multiple times; yes, splintering is an issue so be careful when using / choosing a toothpick. You can certainly use the provided tool if you wish but you also run the risk of scratching the case (as many owners have done and the Service centre sees many of these).
All it takes is one idiot employee (and/or creator of this video) to spread misinformation. If you know how to simply push a pointed object in the pusher perfectly sized for it - you will be fine. Maybe you lost the pusher. Perhaps Canal Street doesn’t provide the stylus with a purchase of a watch. Regardless, no educated and able person would use a toothpick when they explicitly created a tool. Also, it is apparently the service center singapoor right? Doubt the best Patek service talent end up there. Maybe that’s why they use toothpicks (only according to you).
I wanted to check up on this - as your points are valid for sure; when I bought another PP earlier this year (again in Singpore, this time at ION mall), the lady _this_ time used one of those hard-plastic ifixit mobile tools with a really sharp end. So I asked her about the 'toothpick' having said I had seen them being used at other boutiques as well as _the_ official service centre. She said that yes, they had also been told to use toothpicks in the past, but since some flecks of wood could get inside the case, that she instead ordered a stock of the plastic spudger tools. Now I use the tool supplied.
Not really - you only have to stick to 2 simple rules: (1) Do not change the date between 8 pm and 2 am (2) Do not change the moonphase between 9 am - 11 am. That's it! When you buy the watch, you get a very nice booklet on the annual cal movement describing how to set your watch. You can also download this as a PDF from the Patek website - I simply follow it in order, and my review reflected this as well. I took a long time explaining, but once you've done it a couple times, it isn't that complicated really... (pun intended) :)
Its a nice modern looking piece, but i found out that i already put a couple small dings on it. Not sure they can restore it to original condition when i send it in for maintenance in 4 yrs?
Sorry to hear that, but I'm fairly sure they'd be able to restore them to quite a degree. It'll simply come down to taking a bit longer. You might as well enjoy the piece and get it attended to at service.
Great video Michael. I recently purchased the annual calendar and I absolutely love it. Your video is very helpful as well so thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with everyone.
Michael de Silva Thanks Michael. I have to say, as much as I love patek, i was really disappointed when my 5711 (which I purchased a year ago) started having problems. The date would not turn all the way and every other day the watch would stop and I would have to manual adjust it. I dropped the watch at an official retailer and they have to ship it to Geneva with an estimated turnaround time of three months. I could not believe it. The watch is very expensive and I was almost tempted to contact patek directly and ask them to send me a new watch because i have only had this one for one year and I am worried i will experience problems with it again when the warranty is over. Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for this video Mike, i'm about to take the plunge for a 5146R, I can't afford it really, but what the hell! Btw I remember you from the forums years ago, didn't you used to have a two tone ceramic gmt2? Seems our tastes have changed in a similar direction! Stunning Patek! Thanks again. Alex
Hi Alex, good memory! I went through a couple Rolexes at the time and yes, one was a YG/SS GMTIIC. That was quite a while back (circa 2008). 5146R: Go for it! One of my absolute favourites and I'll be adding a third Patek to the collection soon. Glad you liked the clip, have a great new year!
Hey Mike, I also had a steel gmt2-c, then a milgauss and a current aqua terra untill i realised i didn't actually like heavy sports watches! Then i ordered a GS hand wound from Higuchi and so the 5146 will only be my second watch, i was going to buy a new Jlc master calender but then i saw a 5146 in the flesh and fell in love. Anyway happy new year to you too!
can you turn the time to change the date forward by one day? Seems my patek got a short power reserve and when I don't wear it for a day it stop running. I just turn my time forward and it changes the date.
To maintain sync between the various displays, yes this would be the option. It's still a good idea to stay out of the danger zones when doing this, as in those periods either the moonphase is in transition or the date change mechanism is ready to 'trip'. Power reserve on this model is 35 - 45 hours. You'd want to invest in a good watch winder; I've got myself a rather nice Orbita winder in teak wood. The higher end winders are worth it for a Patek as they allow TPD control to ensure the movement isn't overwound over a long period of time (as this would unnecessarily wear out the mainspring).
Right, transitioning through midnight is fine, but try and 'land' on a time outside the zones, so rather than changing it to 0930am (moving through midnight), either make it 8am or wait till 12 noon+ Simply put, you don't want to move the hands backwards during this process at any point, especially when moving through a complication trigger point. TL:DR; in short - Yes, you can change the time to move the date in sync. to the current time/date if you've let your watch stop BUT make sure you don't move the time backwards at any point. As an added measure of extra care, also when moving through midnight, ensure you end up on a time outside the 'danger' zones.
Great video 👏
Thanks!!
Thanks mate, glad you liked it! I did a major pen collection overview, see the 2nd vid on my channel page :)
The factory actually uses a plastic tip stylus.

Great video. Really enjoyed it. That is my grail watch. Love the other video on it, too.
Thanks! It's 'My Funny Little Valentine' by Miles Davies
The music and the piece. What a combo 😁👍
Miles!

A horological masterpiece - no doubt about that
Can you make video of calendar setting on Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Steel Leather strap Watch
how to reverse time?
You'll need a time machine for that I'm afraid :)
Great watch! Hey Michael, just wondering. What's the jazz song playing in the background?
Yeah, it's nice to know calendar complications can actually be quite useful if kept wound :)
great video! do you know how accurtate this watch will be if you always kept it wound?
love the vid mIke!
When are we going to get an update on your pen/watch collection?
Nice watch, now is the toothpick Patek branded and does it cost a million dollars ?
Great song! Miles Davis has a very distinct style.
Can't understand how peope can dislike this...-.-
Please make a new watch video! Thank you in advance.

want to buy an annual, but why is it so difficult to set? so many conditions.. I will probably break it.

...and any backwards pressure on the setting stem should only be exercised for hacking the movement. Nothing else.
FAKE the second hand moves a lot smoother on the real one...
