  • Driving from Italy (Italia) to France through Mont Blanc Tunnel.
The tunnel links Courmayeur, Aosta Valley (Valle d'Aosta) with Chamonix, Haute-Savoie (Upper Savoy). It's part of European route E25.
It opened to the public on 19 July 1965. It has a total length of 11,611 meters and a maximum elevation of 1,395 meters making it the 12th longest road tunnel in the world and the 2nd highest motorway in Europe respectively.
The tunnel passes under the summit of the Aiguille du Midi, where it lies 2,480 meters beneath the surface, which makes it the deepest tunnel worldwide!

I would like to bring to your attention a new effort I started, a wiki for those who love road trips:
    driverspedia.org
Whoever wishes to contribute can register and spend a few minutes creating new articles or improving existing ones, according to the guidelines: driverspedia.org/Driverspedia:Country_articles/Legal_requirements_and_essentials. Even the smallest help is really important!
For starters the wiki will be hosting articles regarding legal information and essential needs for driving in different countries, but the intention is to expand the content with extra articles per country,
containing more details concerning issues related to driving in them.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message! I will be happy to have you on board Driverspedia!
P.S: Not only editors, but visitors are also welcome!

There is really nothing to afraid and it's nice to visit a construction that still holds some records!
If you have time, stop before the tunnel as I did and enjoy the peacefulness of the Alps.
      Have a nice trip!

I wonder how many people fall into a trance because of the monotony of the tunnel. They should pain changing patterns to keep the senses awake. Nice video!

    • @CostasAthan
      @CostasAthan  6 років тому +3

Thanks for the comment! It's an area of extreme beauty and the tunnel is a unique engineering achievement!
I don't think monotony is much of a problem. When you drive, most of the attention is focused ahead, so even when driving on an open road, the driver misses the details of the scenery. That said, there are probably ways (maybe like the one you suggested) to help the drivers keep a higher level of alertness when driving. Furthermore, the tunnel has a minimum speed limit of 50 kph and a maximum of 70 kph and a minimum distance from the vehicle ahead of 150 m and these rules make an accident less possible.
Of course monotony is an issue not only for tunnels, but for motorways too. It's more likely for a driver to fall asleep when driving on a motorway, especially on a long straight, than when driving on an alpine route with constant direction and speed changes.

Sharp video, us Americans simply don’t have tunnels this long, for a variety of mostly geopolitical reasons. Longest major mountain tunnel would be the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels under the Continental Divide in Colorado, 1.693 and 1.697 miles long, short by European standards; but at 11,158 feet/3,400 meter, one of the highest road tunnels in the world. Trying to go lower would have resulted in a impractically long bore, and Loveland Pass (11,992’/3,655m ASL) is a most formidable mountain pass. Nevertheless,, as no hazardous materials are allowed in the tunnel, all over height trucks and hazmats must exit I-70. Colorado DOT attempts to keep the pass open at almost all costs, but sometimes the snowfall is simply too much. Then all hazardous materials must use the tunnel under police escort. I don’t foresee any longer road tunnels being bored in the near future in the US simply because, as mentioned above, there isn’t sufficient geopolitical demand (and will) to justify the expense. That’s another sore point, because thanks to widespread political corruption, building anything related to public infrastructure costs far more than it ought to (but especially in Nazifornia and the Northeast.)

It is interesting how they painted the colors, and their relative heights, on the walls to approximate natural horizon lines, or so it seems to me. I would imagine such a perspective trick on the eyes eases the harshness of this atypical driving situation. Unlike the EuroTunnel, in which case you are passively traveling through on trains, one of my concerns is the uncertainty of drivers who could become drowsy or hypnotically un-alert. I am wondering if this has been studied and whether the phenomenon has already happened. Are drivers asked or warned about their readiness to transverse such a long tunnel?

From what I read they strictly monitor for traffic violations:
      Permanent monitoring, immediate verbalization
Bi-national French and Italian police force constantly ensures checking of these rules to ensure everyone’s safety.
Ten detectors are installed through the Mont Blanc tunnel. If there is a violation, an automated system enables an immediate fine.

    • @CostasAthan
      @CostasAthan  4 роки тому

According to this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest_paved_roads_in_Europe I guess the answer is the tunnel at the top of Ötztal Glacier Road with an elevation of 2,830 m / 9,285 ft.
But the same tunnel is mentioned as the 2nd highest road tunnel in Europe in this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tztal_Glacier_Road
Another web page: www.dangerousroads.org/europe/austria/4659-rosi-mittermeier-tunnel.html states that the Rosi Mittermeier Tunnel (which is the tunnel in question) is the highest tunnel in Europe.
I think that the 2nd Wikipedia article is in the wrong and the Rosi Mittermeier Tunnel is indeed the highest one in Europe.
If we are talking about tunnels of motorways then the answer is the San Bernardino Tunnel ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Bernardino_Tunnel ) with an elevation of 1,631 m / 5,351 ft.

For cases of emergency there are special parking areas every 600 meters, like in 3:43 for example.
There are also fireproof shelters every 300 meters for passengers, in case of a fire. You can see a shelter just before the emergency parking area I mentioned above and as you can understand there are also shelters between emergency parking areas, like in 3:59.
You can read about safety regulations and emergency instructions regarding the tunnel here:
      tunnelmb.net/en-US/traffic-regulations-and-rules-of-behaviour
There are no car checks before entering the tunnel. Trucks and buses have to pass through a thermal detector. You can see it at 0:20, on the right. Trucks and buses have to follow the right lane that leads to the detector as the sign above the road at 0:02 indicates.
Drivers of cars that use LPG have to inform the toll booth operator about it. The driver is given a label that must be displayed on the windscreen. There is no additional cost for it.

The Mont Blanc tunnel's tolls for passenger cars now cost 48.80 € for a one-way ticket and 60.80 € for a return ticket on the Italian side or 48.00 € and 59.80 € respectively on the French side: www.chamonix.net/english/travel/mont-blanc-tunnel

According to HERE WeGo for driving from Aosta to Annecy there are 2 available routes through Mont Blanc Tunnel:
      1. The first one is 154 km and 2 h and 3 min long.
      2. The second one is 155 km and 2 h and 21 min long.
If you want to avoid the tunnel you have to drive a 192 km journey which will take 4 h and 22 min. That's about 40 km longer than the journey through the tunnel and also from 2 h to 2 h and 20 min longer.
For a car with an average 7,5 l / 100 km consumption the extra kilometers will cost just 4,65 €, with the gasoline price at 1,55 € in Italy this period. So you don't save money, but basically you save time.
If you can get a round trip ticket (it's valid for 7 days) then you pay only 55,40 € (French side) or 56,30 (Italian side), which is a discount of 75% compared with a one way ticket.
In my personal opinion, choosing a mountain pass is always much better than taking the motorway (of course if the weather allows it and if you are not in a hurry or have a very long trip ahead of you). On the other hand, using Mont Blanc Tunnel which is among the longest in Europe maybe it's an experience some people would like to try at least once, just for the visit.
