A perfectly well-lit tunnel, always bright and never dark. I wonder why nobody's radio was playing with the multilingual message brought to you by the Gotthard Road Tunnel.
Done it myself in my old British van on my way to Greece from west Cornwall (UK). Very weird sensation driving in there, after a while you lose all sense of whether you're going uphill or downhill and at one point I got the distinct impression that I was driving vertically straight down into the bowels of the earth. It was like doing a bad LSD trip lol. Nowhere to pull over either and no fun with a 40 ton articulated truck driving within a few feet of your rear bumper. Couldn't face it on my second trip down to Greece, I went over the top of the Alps instead to avoid all of the tunnels. Mind you that was just as bad, never driven round so many hairpin bends in my life - enough to drive you round the twist.
As a little kid, I remembered the Lehigh Tunnel on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (then PA Rt. 9, now Interstate 476) being only one tube; now it has a parallel tube (not a twin tube as the original bore has rectangular portals; the new bore, done by a tunneling machine, is rounded the entire length unlike the tunnels on the East-West Mainline, which are rectangular bores, yet have rounded portals).
Name 4You Thanks for the quick reply! Judging by appearances and the construction equipment, I would expect both tubes to be open soon. I love tunnels, and Europe has some of the nicest! Liked and subscribed.
Buddy Clem There are plans to construct a second road tunnel at St Gotthard. It was approved by Swiss voters in a 2016 referendum. However, the new tunnel cannot add new capacity under a Swiss constitutional prohibition against increasing thru traffic volume in the Alps. The new tunnel, when opened in 2027, will will temporarily carry both directions of traffic on two lanes while the original tunnel is being renovated, then each tunnel will be opened to carry only a single lane.
Last time we went through there in 2001 on a coach tour the ventilation was very poor and in places the traffic fumes were choking, just wondered 19 years on if things have improved at all, Mike UK
Being in a tunnel like this one is like trying to figure out how long a minute is without a timepiece...(Have you ever sat still at a traffic light for a minute?- - - It seems like forever for the light to change, Right?)
@@biffnarzilla4649 there is the original Gotthard Rail Tunnel, with is roughly at the same elevation as the road tunnel, and than you have the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is now used for most of the rail freight traffic as well as Switzerland's high-speed and higher-speed passenger rail service; the older tunnel more or less being relegated to regional/commuter passenger service.
Makes a pleasant change to see one of these videos without irritating music.
Thank you for comment ❤

An absolutely incredible piece of civil engineering. A journey through it is on my bucket list!

You remember that when you were a child?! you have a great memory 👍
You know you have really big speed bumps when you have to tunnel through them.

Great video! Why is the tube on the right closed at 1:11? The approach roads are clearly designed for 4-lane traffic.
+Buddy Clem i really don't know friend

Buddy Clem Thanks brother

*Only watching it, I get claustrophobic* 😣
lol
Laerdal tunnel : gold my beer
Qualche volta la galleria del Gottardo dev'essere risanata!
What is the length of this tunnel? Please!
About 16.9 kilometers.
Which equates to approx. 10.5 miles.
Why the most part of the sos areas are on the left ?
i don't know, sorry 🤷♂️
Because there is probably only one escape tunnel
1:13
So when going North > South are you going uphill or downhill in the tunnel?
Phew just finished a 17 k tunnel...comes out end of the tube and then a 900 meter tunnel right after it. Dammit! xD
Similar to the Kittatiny and Blue Mountain Tunnels on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Yes, i definitely felt that way...
I tought it was a train tunnel?
That is the Gothard Rail Tunnel

@@rwboa22 Thanks for help. 🙏☺️🤗
always long traffic jams there. Best is to pass at night.
Hopefully kops work 24 hrs guarding the tunnel from crime and terrorists
