I remember doing this in little league games, everyone gets so lazy during walks, and i would always just steal bases, not many kids knew the rules lmaooo
No one is gonna see this to discuss, but if you’re the RF in this situation would you not let that ball drop foul? Would save a run on that play. Could backfire I guess, but when you’re only up by one…
Literally came to the comments to see if others were discussing this. I think it's maybe just too quick to realize it's foul? Would be pretty impressive to do intentionally in the moment...
@@VictorRodriguez-qn1kz You can't call time. Only an umpire can call time. You may request time, but the umpire is under no obligation to grant your request, and a good umpire will not call time in this situation.
Until the pitcher is set again, the ball is live. The Giants once got a 1-6-1-5 double play on a walk after the forced-up runners strayed too far past their force bases.
Also, the flip side is (adding to my post a year ago): the ball still being live can cause problems. A while back, the Giants recorded a double play on a walk (1-6-1-5) as two Pirates runners forced up wandered too far off the bases, as the ball is still live on a walk.
Agree fully! Those are huge mental mistakes that can cost your team. Both (having the pitcher cover third and letting a ball drop in foul territory with a runner on third) should be taught in spring training for every team.
I wouldn't let it drop. This is Major League Baseball, you get outs where you can. Yes this led to a run and tied the game but if he lets it go foul, the next pitch could be knocked out the park and then what?
This is very old but i just wanted to say if he'd let it drop Murphy wouldve just tagged up and scored anyways. By catching it at least the Dodgers got an out out of it.
it would've been a good idea to do that if they had a 3-4 run lead. But since this was the playoffs they were more than willing to trade runs for outs. If he drops that there's a chance they get a double play next pitch or later in the at bat but since it was the playoffs they weren't going to rely on that chance.
Nah… you wouldn’t do that in the 4th inning. You would set yourself self up for the opponent to get a big inning. You would still have first and third with only one out, as opposed to two outs and the runner on first. At the big league level, I would take the latter despite giving up the run.
Murph was really the hero of game 5
Animosity for the royals
Animosity he was the hero for the 1st 2 rounds

This play cost Mattingly his job.
the game could've gone so much different had they not let this happen!! 20/20
I didn't know the ball is live on a walk
That's why you gotta call time or cover 😂😂

If Murphy retires, i sure hope the Mets hire him as their hitting coach!
Resign this man LGM
I didn't know you could steal on a walk. Awesome.
Why not? The ball is live.
I've never seen it happen, so I always assumed it wasn't live I guess.
The ball is only dead if time is called or if the batter was hit by a pitch.

Ethier probably should've let that ball drop on purpose after murphy steals 3rd. I consider that 2 stupid plays.

@Erik Weiss ....you have a point. Next pitch could've been a 3 run jack.
Erik Weiss But it also could have been a K. You'd be praised or hated depending on what the pitcher does.
apacholikewhoa He should have you are right
Zack Greinke disliked the video... :(
Ethier shouldn't have caught that ball. He should have let it drop.
He should've let the ball drop and not caught it. It would've been a foul.
+Nelson Sanchez exactly

"Trade runs for outs" ??
If the ball falls in foul territory, it's a dead ball.
Thats the nyc spirit. Make something happen from nothing.
And now they take away the shift. Baseball is killing itself quickly.
Most unnecessary slide in MLB history 😂
i know right lol there was literally no one covering third base so he didn’t need to slide
Getting blown out in game 7 made me want to see more Dodger failures.
some much for the shift
If it's Ball 4, the pitcher should cover third. If it's a stolen base attempt, the catcher should cover third.
Murphtober !!!!!!!!!!!
Lmfao the rodgers choked so bad, what happened I thought you were gonna sweep
Yeah the Dodgers too.
lackadaisical by the dodgers
great heads up play - but the RF probably should've let that ball go foul
