At least you are organzing and decluttering from time to time. New clothes and accessories are a whole other topic. But you're definitely aware of what's happening with your wardrobe.
Great tips. The only one I quibble with is the 1 year rule for special occasion items. I’d rather hold on to a few of those for when the inevitable event comes up rather than buy new each time. And yes, I have worn the same silver dress to various events over the past few years changing up the accessories and my hair and voila! It’s a new look. And it’s a different event, so, no matter it’s the same dress.
I do all of these except one. All of my clothes are neutral and classic styles so if I don’t wear them this year they’ll be fine next year too. But also - take time to iron anything that needs ironing and mend anything that needs mending that you can do. Or have it done professionally. It is a rare occasion that you find me ironing five minutes before I need to leave, but I have had a closet full with nothing to wear because everything needed ironing. A good movie, a good iron, a good ironing board and away we go.
All excellent tips, many of which I’ve already incorporated into my own closet and declutter routines. It takes more than just one day sometimes, but part of my process is to put on a single item, e.g. a sleeveless green shell, then put on different skirts, sweater, shirts, and pants to see how many different outfits I can make with it. I write down the ones that really work, and if it’s fewer than three, and I don’t really LOVE the item, out it goes. (One day I’ll cross-reference everything, ha ha!). Then I experiment with various shoes, accessories, scarves, and so on. Although I’m only part way through this process, it has really helped me to know that yes, I do have something to wear. I also practice the “one new item in, at least one (sometimes two) out” approach.
@elizabethpetrie2732 I do the same, but I take pictures of each outfit, and save them to my secret Pinterest boards. That way I can go back and look at what each piece looks like with all my other pieces. I turn on a great music station, and just keep trying on different pieces together, and take full length pictures of everything.
I buy 90% of my clothes at a favorite resale store. As I have gotten older I get overwhelmed easily going into a large department store. And because I pay so little I can easily let things go. I ALWAYS am complimented on my clothes as this shop has very high quality merch with a focus of moving it out the door. However, you must know your style. I know the brands I can wear, Talbots, J Crew, Gap, Ann Taylor. I really enjoy looking at your outfits as it gives me ideas how to mix and match. Thank you!
I remember going to the supermarket after our two years on Guam (and being in the Navy we had the Navy exchange & commissary so we had more choices than most). My mother couldn’t get over my reaction to the abundance. Until you experience it, you don’t know!
You've inspired me to pull out anything I haven't worn in a year and make it justify its place in my closet! Not saying I'll donate every piece but most of it probably needs to go... Thanks!
Such timely advice for me! We are planning on putting all of our things in storage and travel the world for a year, living out of one carry on bag each. My large closet is empty as we paint the walls and it is time to severely purge my clothing. I play the "what if" game too much and you have encouraged me to get over that. Thank You!
What a fun year you have ahead of you! Enjoy every minute! Just be ruthless with your closet. I promise that when you get back from traveling the world you won't remember half of your wardrobe so get rid of it now.
I'm so glad I hung onto some of my favs that were too tight, because ten years later, they fit beautifully and I love them. Maybe put them in a box somewhere too.
I can totally relate...I've been living overseas for 7 years. When I went back to the States last year for a visit, I was totally overwhelmed when shopping!
Always a great reminder to declutter closets. I'm finding that uniform hangers work well. I love the acrylic shelf dividers. I've been using them for years. I live in a 1960’s house and have a double wall closet. The small size keeps me from having too many things. I have a dresser for jeans, sweaters, workout wear, lingerie etc. I’d be completely overwhelmed by anything more than this. That said, I regularly go through items and try to create new outfits. I enjoy the process and because I’m so familiar with my wardrobe I know how to incorporate something new when I do decide to make a purchase.
I never had a weight problem but now I do. I keep things I love that are too tight otherwise I feel I have capitulated to being the current weight and I can’t and don’t want to. I WILL fit into them and I buy high quality I could probably not afford to replace.
I used to have 100 plastic containers worth of clothes I collected since 1995. Took me 4 years to declutter down to 3 plastic boxes, mind you I still have massive amount to go through: 2 wardrobes (jackets, dresses, knitwear) and 3 chest drawers (tops, lounge wear) and a tall cupboard (skirts, jeans, trousers and purses/handbags). Every year, I go through everything. I declutter all the things too small but sellable, faulty/stained garments are thrown out and discard any piece that I find it expensive to 'upkeep' or style with or no longer fits with my activities (eg change of careers). My favorite declutter method is one in three out. Every 1 item that I buy I have to find 3 items to declutter. And if there is nothing I can find to let go, then I no longer need to acquire new pieces of clothing.

In your case I would have a few pieces tailored and keep a few just in case your weight fluctuates. I'm 71, and at 5 feet tall, the 20 pounds I gained recently (130) put me in the next size...
