We just cleaned out our closet and built the IKEA system in January. We hung our clothes with the hangers backward on the rod. Once we wear and wash that item, we hang it back on the rod the "normal" way. Next January, if something is still hanging backwards, it means we didn't wear it and off it goes for donation!
Perfect video! I have been working on my closet for a couple weeks. When you live in a climate with four seasons, that’s a lot of clothes and shoes. I figured out that the perfect solution for me would be if my husband would take his stuff out and give me the whole closet 😂
Well, I am a widow, and if there used to be space where hubby put stuff, I have long since filled the void. There's a rule I saw somewhere: When you buy something new, something old has to go out. I've also heard one in, two out. I just can't get rid of my raggedy old favorites, or my favorites that no longer fit.
This is exactly what I needed today! I’ve been putting this off for years. I’ve lost 125 pounds the last 18 months. And I have slowly been taking the too large clothes out. But realistically, I have about 5 sizes of wardrobes in my closet. I purchased a bunch of my favorite t-shirts last night for spring and knew I needed to work on it to have somewhere to put them. Since most of my closet I don’t even wear. This gave me the motivation to get in there and get all those clothes out and just put the clothes back that fit my current body. Thanks for the motivation and beautiful organization.
Congrats on all your progress. I worked with my mom and she went from a 2x to a 16 and has kept it off for 2 years. My mom took clothing to Encore where they give you cash and sent a box to ThredUp. She also selected to donate whatever ThredUp would not sell. It is a great feeling as she had 30+ bins + three closets from years of unsuccessful dieting plans. Stay healthy!
@@TH-eb5ro THANK YOU!! I will have to look into that. Does ThreadUp just send them for rags? I’ll have to check out Encore. Thanks for the Ideas. I still have so many bins and bags around, trying to decided what to do with them all. So many of them are really good clothes. But, if I can’t find something “easy” to do with them, I will just donate to Goodwill and a few other places we have around here.
You're hired! 😁 Just curious, do you included short and long sleeves, tunic, crop, dress and casual tops in your line up? I've tried every which way and it drives me bonkers.
I've used option 1 most of my adult life and I'm in my 60's. Its a great! I.also sometimes use 2 hangers , the seconds holds the bottom portion of the dress. This is great for dresses that wrinkle easier because you can stretch it out wider; it just depends on the dress.
Home Goods is a National chain, part of the TJMaxx, Marshalls group! For jewelry I took a large piece of cardboard, thick is best! Then I covered it with a dark colored fabirc and nailed it to the wall that is behind my bedroom so that it isn't seen when the door is open. I live in a very small apt. and just don't have another wall such as one in the closet (in other words, don't have a walk in closet). Then I used push pins to hand jewelry on. It is so PERFECT to see every single piece of jewelry I have so that when I am choosing what I am going to wear, I just look at the one wall and pick out my accessories! It works great! Now I have one of those things to hang on the door for bracelets and watches since they are too big for push pins. It is the smartest idea I have had for jewelry display and instead of just using 25% of my jewelry I now use it all because I can SEE it all!!!
One thing I have done to downsize my closet is I only put clothes for the current season in my closet and for the other seasons I put in a tub and put it in my garage. I have been able to keep my closet less cluttered. Its definitely a must do. Hope this helps too 🙂
Yes I finally started doing that. I have one dresser drawer full of leg warmers, soft fuzzy sock-slippers, holiday socks; ie; St patrick's Day, Halloween, Christmas, also thick socks for really cold days, knee socks, I hardly ever wear. and tights for winter....Then I have a drawer for bathing suits ,nylons, and footies.
Hi from England. I am lucky I have a huge cupboard in two separate bedrooms. Twice a year I move from the unused bedroom cupboard and its contents to my bedroom cupboard. In spring and reverse in October. So I always have the correct seasonal clothes in my bedroom.
Yep, I do that too! But I put them in another closet in the house because in SC you can't store anything like that in the garage because of the humidity !!!
Hey Liz- I do a my longer dresses a different way. I use two hangers. Hang the dress normally through the neck. Then take a second hanger and scoop up the skirt of the dress over the hanger. Then hand the second hanger on the cross bar of the first hanger. It takes a litter more space, but I feel like I won't have to iron the dress this way
I do Option #1 and if it's especially bulky I hang the lower portion on a second hanger then hang that on the lower portion of the first hanger. Colour and item category coding is essential! I love the way my denim jackets look lined up in gradient order haha.
I find Option one works better for me. Love the target bins better than the wicker ones because they don’t click things in them and are also much easier to clean/wash out. I find things stored in bins are easier to manage and keep tidy.
I had to look at 20 videos before finding your one which really explains exactly how to organise your wardrobe and how to hang your clothes logically. Excellent! Thank you
Automatic light switches are great. We have them in our laundry room and pantry because we often have our hands full going in/out of those rooms. We also have one in the entry way to our house. Open the door... light comes on. Very helpful.
what if you stay in the room but are not moving ... then the light would switch off until you move again? I heard Liz say you can set it to stay on for 5 min after .. but I'm wondering if it work well in a bedroom?
I cannot believe how many clothes you have. I too, live in a country with distinct seasons but I've just charity shopped the majority of my clothes and I didn't have anywhere near the number you have. I love that I don't have much choice now. I can mix or layer items and it works just fine. I feel a lot freer.
A few years ago my daughter color coded and rearranged my closet as a gift. It was awesome, and it was so effective it was super easy to keeep the way she designed.
Have to say love the fact that you are not just doing Dollar tree or five below stores anymore. Love that you are using target, at home, HomeGoods to show people what is available of course two of those stores we don’t have in our small town but I do shop at them. So so glad that you are using more of them.
I have categorized my clothes for years. But, rather than sort the categories by color, I sort by style (long sleeved T-shirts, long sleeved dress tops, etc). Whatever the weather or occasion, I can look at that section and decide what I want to wear. Btw, we have At Home and Home Goods here in the Dayton, OH area.
Great ideas - my daughter came over and helped me do this to my closet the other day….well one of my clothes closets. One left to go 😬 Love option 1 for dresses - definitely going to do this to have some extra floor space!
I LIKE that you hang your dresses... logical... If the dress is long, I drape the skirt of the dress onto a 2nd Hanger, closely beside the upper part of the Dress, so the dress won't "stretch!" So far so Good!
There's nothing like walking into a clean organized closet! 🤗 This is something most of need to do. I did that in my walk-in closet I had 2 apartments ago. The closet was carpeted and there was a leak. So maintenance came by and said I had to take everything out of the closet. I was amazed at how much of the living room was then occupied by the contents of the closet. But what a perfect time to thin out clothes and put things back in an orderly fashion. And now I have a one section closet with 2 sliding doors. But since there's only one rod to hang clothes on, I got additional hangers with another rod about half way down. Now I can hang tops on the top rod and slacks on the bottom. I did this on both sides of the closet and hung a shoe organizer in the middle. That was the most efficient thing I could do without spending a lot of money for a full organizational unit. Luckily I have a spare bedroom and I have room for the overflow from my bedroom. I have since gotten an over the door shoe holder now hanging on the bedroom door. I had shoes all over my floor too. But it was the bedroom floor which made it hard to walk around. But I've been in this apartment over 2 years now and I've retired so I'm not wearing the same clothes anymore. Which makes it an even better time to thin out the closet. 😋 But I'm also trying to organize my crafting supplies and since I don't have a designated area yet, it's a priority over my closet. 😉 I like the long dress hung the first way. 😊 I've also gotten hangers that hold 4 pair of jeans or slacks. And sometimes when I have a shirt and skirt I wear together, I hang both on the same hanger. I have a whole bottom section for my capris. In Texas we have about 10 months of heat so I tend to have more short pants than long. 😚 This was a very inspiring video and as soon as I get my crafting items sorted out, I will probably work on the closet. Thanks for sharing another great video! 😍
Can your spare room be your designated crafting room? Or maybe the closet of the spare, if it's a guest room. I'd love to have my own crafting room. Best luck organizing!
@@chrissyb6817 I just received this notification or I would have responded sooner. I think my ultimate goal is to be able to use the second bedroom for me designated craft room. But first I have to sort it out. 😉 A lot of stuff got put in that room when I moved in. I have big plans but it's just going to take some time. It will be nice to have a room just for crafting and all the supplies. My biggest problem now is finding specific items for a project. But I'm working on it...... slow but surely. 🐢 Thanks Chrissy! ☺️
@@vickiepatterson1748 no worries. I def know what you mean, I've had a whole "junk" room before. If it didn't have an immediate place, into the room it went.
@@chrissyb6817 I've done that so many times that I can hardly close the door. 😘 Plus I have a tiny kitchen so a lot of my kitchen appliances are being kept in that room. It's like I need another room. One without all the junk. ☺️
Liz you are amazing! I really struggle with my closet, especially because I ignored the "throw away/recycle" step. Now I see how important it is ! you have such a motivational way to make things happen !
Very good video, with simple and practical solutions! One thing that I realized and learned a long time ago regarding jewelry is that if you have Sterling Silver earring, bracelets, rings or necklaces, it is always best to store them in a covered container. The air will quickly tarnish the silver and almost every time you desire to wear it, you will have to clean it with silver cleaner. Costume jewelry is the exception to this rule.
Great video! I'm about to organize my closet again -- it's been a few years -- and I'm happy to have your suggestions. For the long dress, I like Option 1. I color coded my clothes last time, but I found that I preferred hanging clean clothes from the left; that way, everything on the right-hand side of the rack was obviously something I wore rarely -- or not at all. No electric outlet in my closet, so it's time to order a battery powered light to go in there. Thanks for some helpful ideas.
I use option 1, I do try to clean my closet at least once a year. When I do my closet I hang the hanger backwards. When I wear it , I turn the hanger around. This makes it easy to see what I have worn.
Hey Liz, have been needing to clean out my small closet for awhile now. Thank you for the motivation and ideas for storage. Your closet looks wonderful. Our master bedroom closet is so small. I just have my clothes in there and my husband has his clothes in the guest room closet. Buying some dollar tree buckets and basket will really help out with some organization. All I need to do now is turn on some good 80’s tunes and get going.
I organize my clothes by sleeve length, and color. Tanks to long sleeve, and light to dark. Makes it so easy to find anything I want! We have @Home stores here in NC, too.
Holy clothes! I like option 1 for the dress...it's what I use. I did my closet and drawers a while back. Like you, I live in a state where we have different seasons and need 4 seasons of clothes. What I found is helpful is that if I have something that I haven't worn in a year, I get rid of it. That gives me a chance to get through an entire cycle of seasons. One way is to tie a ribbon on the hanger, when you use it, pull off the ribbon and then hang it back up on a hanger without a ribbon.
Love this! I like the number 1 option for the long dresses. Also years ago my dad gave me this great idea for all my earrings. I use a small hardware drawer cabinet. They are light and hang in the wall with little drawers so I can color coordinate all my jewelry especially earrings! Closet looks great! I’m in my closet all the time reorganizing
Hey Liz, are you doing this in one day? You had a helper today. I like option 1 for the long dresses. Thank you for sharing with us your closet mess and how to organize it!
This weekend I went through my dresser and bins, ( I don't have closets in my house ) and I managed to get rid of 11 garbage bags of clothing (328 pieces) and 4 garbage bags of boots/shoes 46 pair. It is extremely mind blowing that I even owned that much, still have to much so I will continue to go through what I do have left and see if I can dwindle it down a lot more.
Dresses and tops, sorted by color and then by sleeve length. Pants and skirts in a separate sections. Long dresses go on a regular hanger and then the longer section gets folded in on the edgesand draped over another hanger. Fewer wrinkles that way.
A year later lolol. But I'm so glad I watched it! I love all your ideas! I don't have any walk in closets (yet) but as my children have grown and married and moved out I have moved into to their closets lolol. My husband took one of our son's for his hunting and camping and fishing things (where mine go as well 😂) but the other two is mine so I have one that I share 50/50 with my husband in our bedroom although I took the middle shelf and top shelf and the other two closets none of them are walk in. And I need to reorganize them since I now have my youngest daughter's closet now! So I have 2 and 1/2 regular size closets to work and I'm getting a dresser and some store bins with drawers. love the sock bin idea instead of a drawer! I like the outfit of the day/week hanger idea! Long dresses and skirts folded I'd great for floor space. You're shoe shelves are great. And the earring displays is a great idea. I might do that with my girls. Its only us two now but I need to reorganize the 3 empty bedrooms for future sleepovers with our grandchildren and yet use them for storage. Thank you for sharing your ideas! Its going to be fun! I usually give my clothes to goodwill and also to a women's recovery program and a safety domestic violence thrift store and clothing closet for those who can't afford to buy clothes. We blessed to have these ministries on our area.
Great vid! I use option 1 for long dresses. I also keep all my clothes in my closet (no need for a dresser!). I keep socks & lingerie in shoe organizer pockets hanging on the back of my door.
I have placed command hooks on the back of a wardrobe door to hang necklaces and bracelets , on another wardrobe door I have 2 hanging bars which I use for belts and scarves. I find there is lots of storage space on the back of doors both in the wardrobes and cupboard around the house. Simple hooks or hanging rails can utilise this space. On the back of the doors to my under stairs storage cupboard I placed wire spice racks these hold things like back up cleaning products/toiletries. This means they are not filling up my under the sink cupboard space.
Wow I was thinking I was the only one that put things by color summer winter I do the same with my hubby's clothes as well. I love things being in order.
I am the color coder. Love the velvet hangers to keep my clothes from falling. I need to organize my closet also. It has been a while. And yes, we have an At Home in Georgia. One I s less than 3 miles from me.
There is an At Home right down the street from me in Orlando! My mom is the fashionista of the family so I'm hoping I can use all your hacks to revamp her spare bedroom into a closet. 🥰 Thank you!
Option #1. I love how you were so aggressive in decluttering your closet. Great ideas. I’ll have to try out the earring system (frame). Thanks for sharing.
I color coordinate my closet too! I liked option one for the dress. I also fold my jeans and put them on a shelf. My leggings I roll and put them neatly in a drawer
I like putting a few outfits together also. That way I can grab and go with out having to think about it. I will also put a few items that also match the outfit giving a choice depending on mood and weather. Actually I would like to do most of my clothes this way but haven’t achieved that
The laundry organiser tubs, to me, looked like upside down kitty (litter) toilets BUT totally a great idea as I haven seen vertical laundry organisers before!
For your baskets @ the top… might want to choose something w a lid, or go back & make use of a plastic bag you would otherwise throw away to cover these up. I have stored hat boxes my mother gifted me in the same location for yrs, every time I access them I take a dust cloth w me bc they get hella dusty!! Essentially anything not directly under a shelf needs a cover!
Welcome to another God Given Day! Thank you so much for the Closet Organization video! I choose Option 1 on the dress folding, as that is a more secure option especially for dresses that the shoulder appearance is important and needs to maintain it’s structure on a hanger. This video could not have better timing as I believe, like myself many people in cold weather climates like we both appear to be are itching for Summer weather! And what is better to do to get ready for summer than to spring clean so you can spend more time enjoying the sun! The motion detector light switch is amazing, however for people like me whom have no lights in some of their tiny closets I have attached a pic of the option we chose from Amazon that has served us incredibly well. I pray the Lord continues to bless all you do! In God’s Grace…. Sybella Grace
You are inspiring me to clean my messy closet! I have color coded and grouped by type for years and it helps so much, but I am a bit OCD. My shoes are also color coded but the ones I wear most frequently are on the top shelf of my shoe rack (3 tiers) but still color coded.
I have a trick I’ve used for years. I put an unused hanger at the beginning of every section of clothes. Then when I’ve worn and washed something it goes on the empty side of the hanger. ( hang things inside if you wore them but don’t need to be washed yet. At the end of a season you can see exactly what you’ve worn and what you haven’t !
Love the video. Ok. On the long dresses I love option 1. It looked clean no wrinkles just like a shirt. Love all your ideas. Thank you for making this video
I know the 2nd demo I have tried but I’m thinking of switching it up to the 1st demo. & No worries, your not alone on cleaning out clothes or garage I just need more storage Items or bins to start my cleaning/organizing. But thank you for the inspiration you bring out to ea. & everyone of us.
Thanks for sharing your ideas. Does make me feel like I need to do mine. I’m like you been in my house 6 years and always forget my closet. Option 1 for dress looks better I think. Thanks again for the inspiration
Thank you for this awesome organization video Liz! Definitely love option 1 for long dresses. I’m a visual person who needs to see the options available…without having to remove each dress and create a pile of disaster. Must admit that I noticed a bin on the top shelf labeled Costumes and it’s created a flurry of thoughts in my mind. Is it filled with Halloween items or items for more dressy occasions like jewelry or shawls or is it filled with fun options for Mom and Dad private time or etc? Truly appreciate you sharing this organizational journey and hope you post more for different areas all around the house please. ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦
We have an at home store in Augusta Georgia. I like the small velvet hangers, but I have a feeling people will be replacing them in the future. Eventually the velvet kinda dry rots and falls off. The shedding is horrible. I had something in velvet that did that, and I just had to get rid of it. Instead I bought the plastic hangers with swivel heads like a lot of department stores use. I bought all black ones from Amazon. I love these kind of videos.

This is something most of need to do.
But I'm also trying to organize my crafting supplies and since I don't have a designated area yet, it's a priority over my closet. 😉
I like the long dress hung the first way. 😊
I've also gotten hangers that hold 4 pair of jeans or slacks. And sometimes when I have a shirt and skirt I wear together, I hang both on the same hanger. I have a whole bottom section for my capris. In Texas we have about 10 months of heat so I tend to have more short pants than long. 😚
This was a very inspiring video and as soon as I get my crafting items sorted out, I will probably work on the closet.
Thanks Chrissy! ☺️
@@vickiepatterson1748 no worries. I def know what you mean, I've had a whole "junk" room before. If it didn't have an immediate place, into the room it went.
@@chrissyb6817 I've done that so many times that I can hardly close the door. 😘
Plus I have a tiny kitchen so a lot of my kitchen appliances are being kept in that room.
It's like I need another room. One without all the junk. ☺️
@@vickiepatterson1748 haha don't we all!
Liz you are amazing!
I really struggle with my closet, especially because I ignored the "throw away/recycle" step. Now I see how important it is !
you have such a motivational way to make things happen !
Liz , At Home, is a franchise big home & garden store used to be Garden Ridge, just like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods not just in your area lol
Thank you. Didn’t know
Having your closet would make me so happy, I just love organising and labelling.
I am literally in the process of organizing my closet after 5 years! Good ideas, and i like option 1 for folding the dress.
I appreciate all of the Moose cameos 😆
Hello Tisha
It’s amazing how INSIDE a closet gets so dusty! CRAZY I did that with my closets too and painted
I organize my clothes by sleeve length, and color. Tanks to long sleeve, and light to dark. Makes it so easy to find anything I want! We have @Home stores here in NC, too.
Hello Dayna
I love all of your hacks and ideas. Hamper genius! Ceiling lights always need to be replaced and motion sensor amazing!😮😊
You look especially beautiful in this video-- that lip color makes your face glow!
Dresses and tops, sorted by color and then by sleeve length. Pants and skirts in a separate sections. Long dresses go on a regular hanger and then the longer section gets folded in on the edgesand draped over another hanger. Fewer wrinkles that way.
Just wanted to say thank you for your suggestions. The Day Light bulbs....Game Changer!!
The separate bins for the laundry is genius...now I'm on the hunt for bins that work for my closet 💜💙💚💛🧡
I like option 1. I also do the colors coded method. It looks very pleasing when I go into my closet.
Hello Debbie
I love option 1 on that red dress. Love the acrylic divider to.👍
Hello Noella
You will feel better when give things away too it's like a breath of fresh air:)
Great vid! I use option 1 for long dresses. I also keep all my clothes in my closet (no need for a dresser!). I keep socks & lingerie in shoe organizer pockets hanging on the back of my door.
I liked option 1 for dress hanging
Loved the 1st hanging option for hanging long dresses
For short people keep a small stool in closet to get to top shelves. I’m starting on my closet next week. I have a modpoge of containers
Good tips, but can we all appreciate the adorable pup. Too cute. 🙂
Option one was awesome for that particular dress
I like the "under the table storage rack with the command-style hooks. The same could be used under the cabinet above your table, as well.
Option 1 for long dresses was my favorite
Long dress hanger hack I like both. Depends on dress I think.
Hey Liz I use option 1 for my long dresses and for my jumpsuits I hang the pant legs over the hanger
Love seeing doggy following you all around no matter what you do 🥰🥰💞
AT HOME is growing, but we have this store and other States do too. When I travel, I see it too.
Hello Tran
@@richardtaylor1468 👋
How are you doing today?
@@richardtaylor1468 Good and you?
Happy to hear that from you.
I am great 👍
I color coordinate my closet too! I liked option one for the dress. I also fold my jeans and put them on a shelf. My leggings I roll and put them neatly in a drawer
I have seen a lot of closet organization videos but your it’s my favorite! Tks for all the ideas.
I usually do the 1st. Option. Really help to keep the same level for the clothes.
Love that!
Great tips! I also like to put outfits together so I can just grab that collection. No searching for what goes together daily or weekly.
I like putting a few outfits together also. That way I can grab and go with out having to think about it. I will also put a few items that also match the outfit giving a choice depending on mood and weather. Actually I would like to do most of my clothes this way but haven’t achieved that
Yes we have “At Home “ store in other cities throughout the country.
Greetings from Johannesburg South Africa. I LOVE your videos - watch them for hours!
Hello Lauren
Johnson city, TN has At Home store. I love that store! And it’s right beside Hobby Lobby so I’m gonna be there ALL DAY when I go.
You are inspiring me to clean my messy closet! I have color coded and grouped by type for years and it helps so much, but I am a bit OCD. My shoes are also color coded but the ones I wear most frequently are on the top shelf of my shoe rack (3 tiers) but still color coded.
We have the At Home store in York, Pennsylvania. I love that store. Holiday and outdoor departments are my favorite.
Hi Liz! I love your closet.
Hello Wanda
Love the video. Ok. On the long dresses I love option 1. It looked clean no wrinkles just like a shirt. Love all your ideas. Thank you for making this video
They have an At Home in Orlando and I love shopping there with my husband especially during the holidays.
Love option #1...I do that option in my own closet and color code as well....great video and hacks
I liked the first way of folding the dress and I was looking for ideas for jelewry.Great ideas!😄
At home is in Michigan too
We shopped At Home when we lived in Memphis , Tn , then northern Kentucky and are shopping At Home now here in Alabama

I love daylight bulbs. They do not get the recognition they deserve.
