  • Throwback to a warm summer afternoon, deep in a remote canyon on the middle Deschutes river, fishing my 10' 6" #4 (conversion Rod) Trout spey with a OPST Commando Smooth 175 grain with an OPST 10' floating micro spey tip and 8 feet long, level mono leader with a short tippet. Dry fly fishing with an elk hair caddis.
This is a very easy line to cast and shoots nicely with the Commando Smooth integrated shooting line. This might be a pretty good way to dry fly fish with Chubby Chernobyls, Elk hair Caddis, Salmon Flies, or Skaters for Summer Steelhead.
My preference is mono running line with an OPST Commando head but if your looking for an integrated running line that allows you to strip the head into the guides without feeling the bothersome clunking of the head as it is stripped into the guides this is a good one!

Keep after it! Analyze what your doing, have somebody’s watch! You’ll get it!

This is really cool. What size steelhead are you hauling in? I'm on the Great Lakes and wanted to use a fly rod for steel this season. Looking at Skagit to launch the line. But not sure if I can haul them in with a 10.5 foot 6 weight.

I have the commando head on a st croix mojo bass and have a hard time turning over heavy flies.

What head weight would you recommend for a fast actioned, 9ft 5 weight rod? Loop SX.

either the 150 or 175 depending on how heavy of a load you prefer. They are so dense and short that even the 150 grain head will fly pretty good when underlining any rod within reason. It might be best to contact James Millard at OPST. I wouldn't want to steer you wrong! Thanks Ranger

Thanks. I’ve seen some videos using the 200gr on a 5 weight.

@@rangerwhite7091 yea, that might work on some 5 weights I guess but if you throw a 100grn sink tip on that it might be difficult on the wrists without a bottom grip, at least for me. different strokes for different folks I guess. thanks Ranger

@@rangerwhite7091 ua-cam.com/video/E_vB6OVOP9Y/v-deo.html so yeah, there you go, I prefer lighter loads, because I don't like it when the head weighs more than the trout I catch! LOL,,,sad

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins I've ordered the 200 grain. If it kills my five weight, i'll use it on my six weight SX, or if it's a real dog, my seven weight!! :)

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins I think he is referring to how the OPST line crashes on the water creating a huge commotion and turning off feeding fish.
As when the trout are feeding heavily on the surface they are keen on movements on the water’s surface and get shutdown quickly by lines and indicators crashing on the surface
