I’m keeping my expectations in check, but I hope this game turns out to be as fun as it looks. Can’t wait to play “Journey to the West” the video game.

Ever played Enslaved: Odyssey To The West?
there's a game called Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which is exactly what it sounds like, but in a more futuristic setting. Player movement and level design in that game is kind of hit or miss, but I liked the story and combat so I say it's worth checking out if you're looking to scratch that "journey to the west" itch ;)

I love how not only his body leaves tracks in the snow, but also his staff whereas in other games your weapon will normally just clip through the environment. Great attention to detail here.
It still clips for certain parts in the vid but otherwise still great attention to detail
For me, the snow displacement looks a little off, like his feet and staff push too much snow for how they move. I just hope it doesn’t cost efficiency for the look. Looking forward to see the end product though because maybe they’ll work on that.
don't get your hopes too high on graphics, this is just a demo, final product can be different.

I would personally rather prefer more simple and less precise snow displacement than the current overly-sensitive displacement because it looks a lot more strange imho. Again, maybe they’ll fix it and just had to leave it as is atm due to the swap to new hardware or whatever.

It's a shame that (thanks to our mainstream media), when most people hear "China", they immediately think all types of negative, political non-sense. When in reality, the country has one of the most ancient, rich, and beautiful cultures in the history of Earth. Journey to the West is a prime example, it's a very old story. Let's hope to see more projects like this...it just advances the industry as a whole.
yeah chinese goverment tainted a lot of peoples perceptions but most people just dont like their goverment but enjoy their rich cultural histories
I mean, I agree that China has a wonderfull history and culture, being one of the most important ancient cultures of this planet...but the reason, *why* so many people think negatively of the country nowadays - the CCP and it's inhumane treatment of everyone they don't like or approve - would also love to get rid of all this ancient culture, because it's "superstition" and therefore useless. Just as a reminder, animated skeletons have (or at least had) to be removed or otherwise censored from games in China, due to them promoting "superstitious beliefs".
Also it's ironic, that China has such an enormous market for gaming and even a flourishing gaming development-scene, when the government did all it could to discourage people from playing videogames. (including electroshock-therapy) But I guess when money can be made, everyone forgets their principles; even when they hurt people before du to said principles.

I just want to let you know, the so called "eletroshock therapy" has nothing to do with the government. It's widely regarded as inhuman by majority of the Chinese population. However, there's a loop hole in the legal system to classify this as a treatment, especially when they have parents' consent. And there's really only one single "doctor" in whole China who's doing this "therapy".
The government pushes gaming companies to limit how much teenagers can play, but they are by no means promoting brutality against teenagers. If not because of your prejudice, how on earth could you even believe it's a thing. Sigh...

Ah yes, because the chinese government never did anything horrible to their own people, thus it's absolutley unbelievable that they would hurt teenagers. The Tiananmen-massacre never happened and the literal concentration camps don't exist.
The only reason the government doesn't condone the doctor's actions is very likely, because it became public. Someone had to be aware what he was doing. (and still is doing) And of course the wider population never approved of the electroshock-therapy - the population isn't the government.
But I guess it's easier to call me brain washed, prejudiced and what not.

To be honest, as a Chinese, I really expect this game, I just wish they could take their time and make the final version 100% as same as their trailers. If they done that , that means hell a lot for Chinese game market. Cuz main market of Chinese game are mobile games and most of them are shit. We just want some real shit from China. And I hope some big game companies won’t destroy game science and black myth. Some companies like Tencent is starting to buy their developers, when I hear that , I’m really angry, how can you destroy a meaningful and historical Chinese game for your own good , that’s fking terrible.
Sadly, mobile games make a lot of money. So Tencent is hellbent on controlling chinese entertainment through them, and if their own predatory monetization doesn't get them enough, they will buy out your company, slander you, or even worse. Anything to eliminate competition.

That’s not true. Tencent invested 5% into the company, not buy them over. If anything, this investment and partnership has helped Game Science gain deeper access to Unreal Engine 5.. I know there’s a lot of politicking going on with Big Tech in China right now but they do a lot of good in the grand scheme of things. If I were the owner of Game Science I’d jump on such an opportunity too.

Looks like they turned the combat to be more tactical with strong single strikes rather than the combo orriented combat you saw in the first trailer. I really hope this game doesn't lean too heavily towards the Souls-like style of combat and leaves some room for faster paced combo orriented combat. Would be sweet if you are allowed to customize your prefered style of combat.

I feel like it will be just a mix of both. In this trailer he seemed to have special dodge move (making it look more souls-like here), while in the first trailer he had a parry move. I think you'll equipped different abilities before fights (like these where trickster and royalguard, or how he did a fire circle here to keep the boss away vs making clones in the first trailer)
We havent seen anything how the rpg elements are in this game. There is probably going to be skills/skill tree where you can spec into different playstyles. Maybe.
@@jexusdomel5194 the parry is still in this trailer. In one of the boss fights shown he uses it. Based on journey to the west wukong is likely going to have many different abilities like you suggest
@@CaptainPerfect I hope so, I mean the game is still pretty early in development I think so it makes sense why we haven’t seen anything about how the systems work and all that. Obviously idk forsure but it looks like a game that’s still atleast 2 or 3 years away but shit if they continue with this type of quality I say take however much time you neeed

They probably won't do that, as the title "Black Myth" should be a series about the ancient Chinese mythologies such like "The investiture of the gods" and "Lotus lantern" etc.
I could totally see this kind of game working for other mythological stories. Heck I'd love to see a Black Myth: Horus or a Black Myth: Hercules, especially if the game does well
This is a chinese company, they most likely won't develop other mythological stories from other region except china, and I heard news and info stated that if this games is a success the developer might develop another game based on chinese mythological heroes. Hopefully we able to get a Nezha story (another mythological hero that are fairly popular right now in China be cuz of the recent released of the movie based around Nezha gotten huge success in the box office)

All of those boss, monsters in this game are based on Chinese culture like '山海经' '聊斋志异' Of course many Japanese monster we knows they were all from China in ancient times, So this is why may you see the boss you will say why this is Japanese monster. It's just we know Japanese culture more than Chinese culture.
The developer literally went to temples for laser scan in order to do the modeling, all the details(even colour) look exactly the same as the temples across the nation
Notice they didn’t show a release date, there’s no rush, simply showing that they are still working on it and improving upon it. No rush, no caving in to complaining people just taking their time.
Iirc the current target is 2023.
They hope between 2022 and 2023 they can release it but I really appreciate them taking their time for this

This game is looking way too promising, I hope it comes out the way they are showing it off but I'm definitely going to be skeptical until release which is about 3+ years out I'm guessing

@@Kessekom Well it’s using an engine that currently doesn’t exist so that could be why it looks off but the graphics are probably the most believable part it’s a game built for the most powerful consoles and pc’s to date

Having actually read Journey to the west, I think we are not playing as Wukong himself. 11:04 the demon shown in this sequence seems to be the "Huáng méi", the demon who pretends to be a buddha. The demon used to be an acolyte of Maitreya Buddha, but he couldn't withstand the time and effort it took to achieve nirvana. He went mad eventually and so just stole some artifacts from his master Maitreya and named himself as a new Buddha. Hence his heavenly palace looks like a cardboard cutout and is obviously a fake. He's one of the lesser demons when it comes to power level, but he did pull off one major feat in the novel. When Wukong's party arrived at his palace, having actually met some Buddhas, Wukong immediately knew Huáng méi was nothing but some small-time demon. But the rest of Wukong's party got tricked. This leads to Wukong and his party being sealed inside one of Maitreya's stolen artifacts that is basically a huge ass cymbal. I think 12:19 is the cymbal where Wukong and the rest of the gang are trapped. In the novel, Wukong eventually breaks free using his "Ruyi Bang(Staff like artifact that Wukong uses)". But here in this game, it seems Wukong doesn't have Ruyi Bang since the player character has it for some unknown reason. I think the players will be initially tasked with the mission to free Wukong himself, but maybe something goes wrong so players will need to take detours and eventually embark on an epic journey that is different from the source material. Giving the devs creative freedom while still being loosely based on the Journey to the west. Btw I don't think Huáng méi will be the final boss. He may have trapped Wukong, but he's still a small fry. Wukong is still trapped inside the Cymbal in this game so this will attract more ancient, more powerful evils. I think what's going to happen is Huáng méi will be the midpoint boss storywise. When players defeat him, a stronger big-time demon will arrive just in time to take cymbal and its captives for himself.
I just bought the 16th century book that the monkey king is from, The Journey to the West...gonna be a hell of an undertaking...its over 2,000 pages (4 books total). Buy it brother
Definitely keeping an eye on this one. Hopefully they'll take their time. I'd hate to see something with this much potential get ruined because some executive is tired of waiting.

I love that they are doing a different, darker and non-linear take to Journey to The West. Very fresh and adventurous.
As much as everyone loves the story, Chinese peeps everywhere have heard the story about a dozen times told through different kinds of media now. This new perspective (and mystery) behind the plot and the characters sounds like it's gonna be an absolute blast.

For me it just prove that western gaming companie have been becoming lazy with their game design because they just want to focus on microtransaction manipulation
@God Slayer What I might say might be a bit heated but I find GOW 2018 falls a bit at what you say there with the REVOLUTIONARY ONE TAKE CAMERA thing. Meanwhile, while the game is still fun, dont get me wrong there but lost so much of the fun gameplay GOW has been known of. Prime example being the enemy varieties (*cough Valheim *cough). I just hope that they step up the over the top gameplay since they have used the camera card now.

I felt a tear in my eyes when they played the Legendary theme song of Journey to the West at the end of the trailer, I grew up loving that show when it aired in Vietnam. Pls check out the theme song of Journey to the West, I cannot recommend it enough

the ending line in chinese (斗罢艰险又出发) means: After fighting hard and dangerous and set off again (thx to google translate.. i can't do this shit...), which is actually a part of the lyrics of the original song of the famous tv drama 'journey to the west' in 1986, you can feel the nostalgia and special emotion bondings there for those chinese audiences born in 80s. and thanks for your reaction :) we all pray that it wont disappoint us when it officially released...
I've said this before and I'll say it again. You might think that they're doing a Cyberpunk or a No Man's Sky, BUT you have to remember something. This is not their first rodeo considering these are ex devs from Tencent, iirc, and they are always telling us that these trailers still needs more improvement. Mind you, trailers that actually shows actual in-game footage. My best bet is you can have a small hope or hype for it but still keep your expectations low. This is what I did when I saw Ghost Of Tsushima and hopefully the same goes for this one.
The end theme from the 1986 Chinese TV series hits me in the feels.

The game looks like it will be really cool when it comes out. The only thing that bothered me is the hitboxes when the main character was fighting the first boss in this trailer.

The fat that not just the big special attacks, but almost 'all' of their attacks left dynamic marks in the snow... Dang.

I am worried that this kind of excessive attention will make people demand too much of it, so that they forget that this is the first work. It should be allowed some minor errors.

In the sentence "即见未来，为何不拜" at 12:37, Chinese netizens regard the second half of the sentence as a pun in Chinese and English. The sound of "拜" is the same as "buy", so in China's UA-cam (bilbili), you can see that many people will say "buy" in the barrage. Lol, this Chinese English pun is really interesting.

There are three games that I'm excited about from East asia which are not from Japan: black myth wukong, faith of danschant, crimson desert
You open your UE4 project in UE5 and it. just. works. That's how seamless it is. Also the workflow itself doesn't change much. Wherever it does, it's in fact easier, so yeah. No problems there
I just found out about this game though this video, and honestly my only complaint so far is the hit sounds. Anyone who knows about journey to the west knows that wukong’s staff is heavy, like no mortal can pick it up levels of weight (around 17,550 pounds, to be exact), and those hits sound like their coming from a regular old bo staff.
Otherwise, seems good, though I highly doubt the end product is gonna look like this. I’ve seen way too many games hype up the visuals only to not deliver.
There are rumors out there that this isn't actually Wukong but someone else trying to follow in his footsteps. So maybe the staff isn't the same as well.
Its seems it's either one of his clones or the six eared macaque.
Strike impact sounds definitely need an upgrade, but yeah, this is gonna be awesome.

Keep in mind this game is indeed, inspired by God of War 4, Monster Hunter and Sekiro themselves, which really garners a lot of attention with these gameplay footage. Another impressive game yet again! I hope this sells once the final trailer released before people start pre-ordering.

This gameplay is about the chapter of a very strong demon pretend to be the Buddha and created a fake temple which is wukong’s destination. The ufo thing at the end is the demon’s weapon that can trap people inside, it is a small universe inside so no one can break it if they are already inside of it. You can hear the knocking from wukong. In the end of chapter the dragon helped to drill a hole from outside to free wukong. They are actually from the same side, just got a misunderstanding at beginning.
a lot stuff seems like they are doing their best to make this happen. i do hope their development goes smoothly and optimization for their performance starts to be better when it’s released. this game has a lot to show if done right
There are a lot of highly detailed single player projects around the corner. The real next gen possibly shows on 2023

The game has some insane scenery but what I feel the games lacks right now is impact behind the attacks since I feel like the player is just tickling the bosses, and as Max said the audio still needs some work in some parts but overall I’m excited! We barely see Chinese folklore as compared as to Japanese culture and this game can really make something cool and different

In fact, if you understand Chinese culture, you can see many shadows of Chinese culture in Japanese culture. For example, [Seven Dragon Ball] borrowed a lot of Chinese novels [Journey to the West], and [风林火山] that often appeared in the Japanese Warring States game actually came from the Chinese book of war [孙子兵法]

For anyone who founding last part is confusing, and it is if one doesn't know the original "Journey to the West" book. IN short, the fat man pretended he was Buddha Maitreya (who represents the future) asks Wukong or the player to kneel and pray. Then he trapped Wukong and the team into the golden container.

I love how this is based off Journey to the west, one of the best pieces of fiction ever. I wonder which familiar faces we’ll see. I can see that the fake impersonator of the Buddha is there at the end. Super excited to play this game
I vaguely remember that there’s a short story about The Two monkey Kings. It’s a side story about another stone monkey turned into Wukong when the real Wukong went out for food or something. In the end of the original story the fake Wukong was banished by the real one but nothing was said about the fake one’s whereabouts later. This might be an imagination of fake Wukong’s journey

Chinese games are great when they don't ask you to "Top Up". Learned that a long time ago.
In the late 90s and early 00s there are many good Chinese games that can compete with any famous games in terms of quality. However things gone different later. The PC begins going into normal Chinese families while PlayStation sort of things are still not that affordable, which makes PC games become the major focus in Chinese market. Then, as Chinese government didn’t notice the rise of game industry quick enough, the hack version of big games are basically everywhere due to the lack of supervise, and it killed all companies that can produce good games. Then the mobile time comes, and we all know what happened later.

For anyone wondering about the weapon Wukong wields, it is named " Ruyi Jingu Bang ".
As for the story, a lot of people are calling this Journey to the west, and yeah it could be, but considering the trailers so far, this is likely going to be his early life, there is a lot of stuff that happens long before he steals various immortality items in heaven, years upon years of stuff, oh said items do not make him immortal, they just extend his lifespan, though he is pretty much impossible to kill by any means due to all that anyways.
Then Buddha drops a mountain on him ! YAY !
And not until after that is Journey to the west, so this could either be the start of a series, or just the beginning of his life, then again it could be a mix of everything, no idea really, but the trailers so far make me think it is going to focus on the start of his life mainly.
The earlier trailer had shots of him older so it could be a bit of everything.

Dude Sun Wukong has got to be one of the coolest fictional trickers and his story is supper interesting.

Wukong doesn't seem to be able to jump normally, so it's definitely more of a souls game than a devil may cry
judging from how much references they put into the gameplays from the original book, I'm pretty much certain wukong will be able to jump, but maybe not conventional jumps. The original book states wukong's single jump could jump 108,000 miles high. so yea, I guess it could be used for fast travels?
This is definitely not Devil May Cry. No Combos, Juggling, or Style meter. I wish people would learn the difference between an action game having good combat, like darksiders, and DMC. This barely qualifies as action combat game.
@@TheMilhouseExperience DMC is just a bad example, if they said monster Hunter then that would be more accurate for boss fights at least. Imo it lands basically right in the middle which would be an easier version of Nioh as a comparison
@Kraze alot of those abilities in that first trailer have been pulled out I'm willing to bet. Just a hunch but I think someone had the game changed to make it more souls similar to cash in on it.... *tencent*
That snow looks insane man
This game feels like it needs more time. The fights don't feel dynamic even though the particle effects are there. The dragon and the monkey are ackward in the way they move and attack. Considering how generous the dodge windows and evasive moves seem to be, its suprising the bosses move so slowly. It reminds me of the bossfights in Resident Evil 8 where you almost have to suspend your disbelief because the boss acts as if they want you to win.
Sekiro managed to make EVERY fight feel like a dynamic and visceral battle of dodging, reposting, and slicing.
Wukong has the makings of a game as great or better than Sekiro but the fights NEED to flow in order to contend.

This looks really cool, but I'm not crazy about the watery 'motion blur' effect on all of the big attacks.
I don't know, I kind of like it... I thought it was weird at first, too, but now it's kinda growin on me.

Don't know about the aesthetic, but it's good for indicating the hit box.
There is a concept in Chinese Wuxia Story, called Qi of sword. Wielding a sword with great force will generate an air wave. That’s why the blur came out.

It’s made by ex-tencent employees, so Tencent probably invested in this game. I wouldn’t be surprised that’s how they got connections and support from Epic with UE5 since Tencent pretty much owns Epic

I don't want to get too hyped but...it looks pretty insane.
Many ppl talk about Goku, but little people do know Goku is actually based on Sun Wu Kong, a chinese myth novel story written on 16th century.
There's a lot that looks fantastic in this game, but the combat still doesn't sell it for me, so far it looks very simple, hitboxes look a little weird. I'm gonna wait and see what changes in the next updates.
Game looks amazing I been waiting on it ever since the first trailer. If there's one thing I can agree on is that the impact sounds when he's hitting enemies do need some more oomph and spice to it
