The Best Voice Acting in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: ua-cam.com/video/kE0fQgDgN2E/v-deo.htmlsi=H7ylKVQ0WRf2Xh05
Great interviews! What a fun video
My hero!!!
Yea this new elden ring game looks cool. How does it compare to Octopath traveler? I hope its a turn based game. Ive been recommended to it several times.
@@SOH-bl4mr Actually it's EXACTLY like Octopath, except everything is different.
@@TheStickMachine 🫨
This is what it is all about.
imagine miyazaki showing you character and its a big ass jar
@kreviz oh, thanks for reminding me to finish the great jar challenge!
And then you find out said Jar is one of the most beloved characters in the game.
I, Iron Fist Alexander, do hereby vow to unflinchingly brave this ordeal.
Truth 😂😂
That’d make me happy. Just a silly little (big) jar
@@cynreiusacari3163 do it, do it now
“He just kept asking us to come see this poison swamp…”
🤣🤣
“He kept showing us images of all the female characters feet. No idea why.”
“I thought it was some kind of creepy innuendo but then he showed it to us and it was just this big wet area where even breathing hurt, and he seemed so excited…”
“It was all these pictures of his backyard”
Props to Shaun for his immaculate performance of screaming in pain as Fire Giant
Miyazaki: Ok scream like you're 95 feet tall and this little man with a sword stabbed you in the Achilles tendon, causing your leg to break and your chest eyeball to open.
The fight was balls-shatteringly hard for me but that second phase cutscene of it barbecuing its severed foot like an offering to the gods is so unintentionally hilarious and memorable that it cemented itself as one of my all-time favorite bosses in Elden Ring.
Miyazaki was actually in the booth peeling the guy's nails in order to get that scream, he famously said "okay Shaun we only have twenty takes so let's get this right"
I fought him at lvl 40 with +3 weapons and now i can beat him without getting hit
@@kagomehigurashi693omg youre so cool 🤩
These people saw, in first person, that Miyazaki indeed has its own boss health bar.
It was infinite. He’s the creator of the universe after all
@@tracemacmillan9718 when he enters the room the air gets a tint of red his health bar is that large
The voice acting and weirdly poetic dialogue in all the souls games has always been such a joy to experience, no other game has that same feel
Totally agreed
It's probably the _one_ part of these games that is even underrated
It has such an otherworldly feel and fits in so perfectly with the video game world. I love it
"Thou art maidenless" was def not smth I was expecting to get slapped by after the "THE LOATHSOME DUNG EATER"
10/10 Peak tought provoking dialogue
The dialogue is like poetry and maps are like a painting. This game is art
What I like most about Elden Ring, is that it makes me feel like I'm inside some kind of mythology, like no other game. Like, the stories we tell about the Greek and Norse and Egyptian gods and heroes. It makes me feel like I'm inside one of those collections of stories/living mythologies, except in a made-up world. The dialogue also contributes to the effect.
People are out there claiming that these games are full of mistranslations that misrepresent the Japanese dialogue/text, and meanwhile Miyazaki is discussing every detail of the English dialogue with the actors...
i think theres a big difference between a mistranslation and a misunderstanding, a word or phrase or even idea can be very different in japanese in the way its contextually used. and often double checking the original japanese just offers some clarity to avoid some of those misunderstanding
@@aaronapitius4775 japanese and english are also simply very different languages and words sometimes don't have an accurate counterpart word in english.
This is generally true in all translated games. The examples out there are quite jarring.
its intentional
@@aaronapitius4775 I have never heard any of the "Elden Ring is mistranslated" guys actually explain the context, colloquial use, non-literal connotations, modern vs historical use, or anything like that about the things they're critiquing. It's always pretty much about the exact literal dictionary meanings of words.
it's cool that even tho miyazaki is not fully fluent in understanding english he has a certain fascination about how things are pronounced and said by the voice actors.
Added note: BIG shoutout to the translators for the games. that shit is NOT EASY.
Being unable to speak professionally a lenguage isn't equal to not being able to understand it. I can hear the English language perfectly but I struggle when I try to speak it.
She said that he's a master of detail. An understatement.
Miyazaki knows English though and he is probably pretty good at it as well, just in written form probably listening too but he doesn't speak it fluently. He can't speak English but he did mentioned that he reads English fictions and that's why the English dialogue is written like this cause he wants it to sound like an ancient story.
I’ve always actually wondered about the translations in souls games. Because I don’t know anything about Japanese, I don’t know what style or manner of speaking they do in Japanese, but (similar to Dragons Dogma) the style of English speaking that is used in Souls games is not normal or contemporary English in any sense.
They use words that aren’t used anymore, phrases and speaking styles from hundreds of years ago. I always wondered how they not only get it from Japanese to English, but also from English to a mix of older forms of English. I also wonder if they are using medieval Japanese styles of speaking in the Japan version.
@@TEFFTPATTERN The Japanese versions of the Souls games are also English voiced. Been that way ever since Demon's Souls, with the only exception being Sekiro.
Miyazaki gets an tremendous amount of respect from everybody, and he deserves every last bit of it. We are so lucky
Truly blessed.
Honestly, Miyazaki is such an enigma that I think it helps him to cast people in languages he doesn't know. What I infer is that he probably sits on the call and tries to hear the emotional response coming from the voice. The feel of the voice is easier to understand when it is the only part you understand of the speech. The same phenomenon exists in anime, where it almost becomes easier to understand the emotional subtext due to the lack of literal understanding of language.
He definitly knows english though. That’s why he is very peculiar on the texture of each word.
@@jameslecitron1039 it was said in the video they needed a translator, so it's safe to assume he doesn't KNOW English, but he understands the emotions and the sounds coming from these words, even if he doesn't understand the words themselves
@@TubularBellsRequiem6531 It’s not because you know the language that you don’t need a translator in a professional context. Miyasaki said multiple times in interview that the cryptic storytelling of his games was based on his experience as a child trying to decipher Western fantasy book written in english. If his english was poor but sufficient to comprehend these novels as a kid, it’s safe to assume he has at least a passable level in english today. But in a professional context, things might get lost in translation and it’s better to call on a professional to communicate. When using a 2nd or 3rd language, needing a translator =/= not understanding the language.
@jameslecitron1039 that's fair, I never knew that about him as a child, but it makes sense that'd he'd have gained a greater understanding of english based on that. And that bit about translators makes sense too, I never thought of it that way but yes, it makes absolutely sense to have a translator when speaking a second or third language, just to be safe with that language.
@@jameslecitron1039 I might have written my original point quite heavy-handed because I know that Miyazaki has an understanding of the English language. However, I don't think that takes away from the original point. I still think it's sometimes easier to listen to the emotional response of speech through languages that you lack expertise in. Do you disagree or did you just want to add that he can speak and knows English?
Shaun Dooley is a brilliant actor. Love his work and recognised his voice immediately. A brilliant cast, all of them.
Same for Anthony Howell, the man’s got such a distinctive voice and it’s always a joy to hear him in anything.
MAY CHAOS TAKE THE WORLD
This explains a lot of the "Aaaahh.... Hehehe... You shall die over and over again, heeeheheeeeeee...." direction found in his games. Of course it's like that. He's directing down to the absolute.
0:00 Shaun Dooley - Yura/Shabriri
1:58 Anthony Howell - Margit the Fell /Morgott the Omen King

I love Rykards VA 😂
TOGEZA!!!
FAMILEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Rykindof, Lord of Blasphemy😅
@@c1deon363 Lord of Bassphamy
Always nice to see the faces behind the characters.
Blaidd Gowry and ESPECIALLY Boc’s VAs look exactly how you imagine they would too. Really brings these characters to life they feel like a natural extension of these actors’ personalities.
Also never knew Gowry also voiced Gael which is kind of hilarious. You think the whole red hooded bad guy trope is an inside joke between them?
And Latenna is SHADOWHEART!!
@@buddhajew6259 no way 😂
Literally the only japanese studio that has figured out how to do English dubs. Bloody fine work from all the VAs in this video
Monolithsoft as well
metal gear solid
and atlus. And monolith like marikus said.
Probably way more I'm forgetting
And to think it started from that awful DS1 dub. I still laugh at the compression on that Skeleton blacksmith voice.
Ehm did you play the new Zeldas? Platinum Games as well?
One might say that Simon Gregor featured on this video TOOGGGEEETTTHHAAAAAAAA with his other fellow voice actors.
I was playing coop earlier and getting summoned for Rykard fight. I kept yelling in the mike, Togethaaaa we will take down this serpent.
It's a shame that Aimee-Ffion Edwards, the voice actress for Ranni the Witch, doesn't appear in this video. I love that woman and her voice.
Speaking of her, have you seen her great performance as Mio in Xenoblade chronicles 3?
she does such a phenomenal job at sounding Welsh specifically!
She's a very private person from what I've heard. She doesn't even have a Social Media presence
@@darkarchonisme Don't know if you're being sarcastic. But just in case, she is actually Welsh
@@Nemo.404 did not know that! just that many of the elden ring characters have Very Specific accents
Funny how most of the voice actors actually look like the characters.
I was about to type a snarky comment, saying how Anthony Howell, really does look like Morgott, sarcastically, but after scrolling back, and looking at Morgott, and looking past all his horns.....yea, you're right.
Kudos for fact checking before making a snarky comment
@@Tommy9834 if you look at his characters he almost always looks like his characters, Elias from Diablo 4, Samuel from Alien Isolation, Geppetto from Lies of P
I hate that you’re right. You can even see some of Simon Gregor’s likeness in Rykard 😂
Alexander and his VA are indistinguishable from one another
It's so uncanny how the likeness of the voice actors was subtly used in their characters' designs. Especially Boc and Margit. I know it may sound weird, but even Gideon's helmet somehow looks like his voice actor.
wot
With all due respect sire, I suspect thou mayst be tripping...
No no, he's got a point
I agree @@david5310
@@copyninja8756I think he might be a little loopy lol
From the sound of it they really like working with Miyazaki, especially without any excessive egos and agenda.
Imagine my shock of hearing Jonathan Keeble in Elden Ring as maliketh no less when he has been literal hundreds of characters in Warhammer 40k. Absolutely Goated with the sauce 🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely love Shaun Dooley, did a lot of local television in my hometown and as always been an amazing actor. He nailed Shabriri.
The fact he already enjoyed his games & knew when he got the call that it was for Elden Ring is rather endearing. Gotta be a rather surreal moment
I wanna meet Igon's voice actor. Best performance I've heard in a long time.
BAYLEEEEEEEE
It is so funny to learn that Rykard is the one raspily dying every time we kill half the envies in the game
holy moly that explain why FS game always have one of the best if not the best voice actor cast. Elden Ring is great but man, you can feel and SEE the characters in Armored Core 6 even thought you see 0 character model there
How I miss my buddy Rusty
Totally agreed. Armored Core had some of my fav voice performances in any game, probably ever. The characters felt very real for how little you could actually perceive them, or learn about them
Dude, I love how Dan doesn't include himself in these interviews. Not saying he should do that all the time or anything but for compilations like these it's fantastic to see the actor alongside their game characters. respect, dan!
One of the best voice acting in game. The casting director really did a job well done
Yeah I agree with the last thing said in the video. There's an awful lot of "UAAGH", "AARGH" and "IUUGH" in the game. Imagine voicing the common soldiers who only grunt and scream to death.
That’s pretty cool miyazaki went to london. Love how hands on he is. It’s what makes his games great. They only expected Elden Ring to do like 2 to 4M in sales, but it was the details like these that made it do 25M+.
I'd love to see Calvin Dean's body posture and face when he recorded Boc. When you see voice actors in the recording booth, they often stand and move accordingly to get in character. Watching a strong looking man acting all meek and repeating "M'lord" would be fun
Hearing them talk in a normal voice vs the game is very jarring to me XD
I couldn't stop imagining them talking in their game character
i love how passionately they speak about their roles. you can really see how much pride they take in their work and they absolutely deserve it!
also, the videos of the actors and the pictures of their respective characters put side by side made me realize that it seems as if the team who worked on the character models made a point to include certain features of some of the the actors as well, which is super cool. like, the characters look nothing like the actors at first glance(obviously, since we're dealing with several non-human characters lol), but when you look closer you realize "oh, they have the same nose/lips/jaw!" for example chiara and fia both look insanely alike if you look past eye and hair color, and strangely enough anthony howell and morgott seem to have very similar faces(obviously if you ignore morgott's omen-ness lol). idk that was just insanely cool for me when i noticed it.
Elden Rings voice work and writing are godtier and I feel they are just as pivotal to the experience as the gameplay and level design. I have been gaming for over 30 years and Elden Ring is arguably the greatest game ever made. Now if you'll excuse me as I count down the final hours for Shadow of the Erdtree.
All of Fromsoft's voice work for the Soulsborne series are expertly crafted. They never fail to deliver.
Elden ring is just ds3 in open world. What is so ground breaking about the combat? They were a niche studio and only got big because people were stuck at home with nothing to do but have time to sink into frustrating games
@bigde131 People weren't at home in 2022, get your facts straight. And clearly you understand little in way of level design, combat, character development, lore, storytelling, boss design, and a countless other things.
@@GracelessTarnished I’ve been playing from soft games since you were a kid haha. Character development? Combat? Lore?! lol yeah let’s just agree to disagree. I’m dealing with a huge fanboy “graceless tarnished”. No objectivity here. Good dau

Wow Boc's Cadence is really his voice actors cadence. I would have figured that he was told to talk that way but that's how he talks, that's cool to see.
It’s crazy how I can hear Boc in the voice actors normal speaking voice, just less exaggerated. Same with Yura.
thank you for this ❤
This video was so intriguing! This is an angle I have not seen before that provides so much perspective. Great work!
Seek precious video !!
Miyazaki is the dark souls of game directors
Made it sound more samurai. I laughed so hard at this
Great video
Fromsoftware's voice acting is absolutely amazing, there's always something classy about the British accent that suits their games.
It's a Medieval Dark Fantasy Setting Son. Why wouldn't Europeans fit the most? 😂
Braggart in particular is one of my favorites
Because they are Europeans
Wow, I had no idea Jonathan Keeble played Maliketh! Loved his work on the Gotrek and Felix audiobooks
Igon's voice actor needs a video
What a great video, thanks man!
At this point Miyazaki is mythical
What a genius. The amount of care and attention and detail he puts into the games down to direction of voice acting. We're so blessed.
you should have made them say their favourite line from the game!

@@DanAllenGaming thank you! That was really good! I was clapping my hands everytime they did their lines. Haha they were so good. so glad to see people who specialise in something like this with all their heart.
Crazy insight
You do such a great job covering these niche aspects of the souls games. I've always been curious about the people behind the English translations. They do such an incredible job, and I honestly think are absolute essential to what the souls games are. I believe Frognation (Ryan Morris lead translator) has done the souls series. I was wondering if you might be willing to do a piece on them?
Finally i had the pleasure to see and hear " Togethaaaaaar " live 😂.
Shaun is the best, I recognized his voice instantly when I played the game pleasant surprise, his character in Misfits was one of the most iconic imho :D
great stuff m8
Holy shit man. As soon as Simon did the pain noise, I recognized it. Good shit
This is amazing
Now i want the dude who scream over Bayle while dying
So glad Shaun Dooley is a fan too. Even higher on my list of favourite actors now!
Jonathan Keeble as Maliketh is insane, I have listen to so many of the book he voice in th WH40k universe ! Glad to see how is range got him into elden ring
Shaun Dooley’s voice acting is so good
probably on the line for best director award again
I’d have loved to hear from the VA for patches on his experience doing the same character in the entire series for such a long time, I bet he’d have some stories
Jonathan Keeble does a bunch of Warhammer audio books that I love! Had no idea he was in Elden Ring
it feels that all the actors are classically trained. I think Elden Ring's texts needs that
you guys got the job done.
shaun dooley was sooooo good in misfits, can't believe he voiced Yura/Shabriri thats so sick, great interviews man
You're a good interviewer!
This really does confirm how much detail Miyazaki puts into the creative direction of the games. I doubt any element got past him.
Simon Gregor the voice and man behind "Togethaaa we shall devoouurrrrr the Gawdssss" 🔥💯💪🤝🏽
I got shivers listening to Scott Arthur. Unbelievable.
Yeah, so basically Miyazaki is a genius and a master of his craft.
It's amazing how much reverance Miyazaki is able to garner even from the actors not engaged in the gaming industry
Greatest game director of all time
Blaidd is one voice where the first impression is "hmm, not at all what I expected." But after some time with him, you wouldn't change a thing.
hearing Scott, someone with my local accent is so good, we don't hear us much in games.
9:00 ptsd from giving boc a larval tear and finding his brain dead twink form in Renalla’s study. It crushed me truly. I loved Boc and I looked forward to seeing him at new sites of grace. I’m so sorry Boc. I didn’t know.
Shaun Dooley is from my home town! What a great guy.
8:52 loud ahh notification 💀💀
John Keeble is spectacular in his Warhammer narrations on Audible. I had no idea he was Maliketh as well
Imagine that. The greatest game of all time was made by professionals from top to bottom. Take notes Western Gaming Industry.
I just realised that the voice actor for Maliketh is the same actor who has done the Warhammer 40K Siege of Terra audiobooks, I honestly had no idea, he has good range!
Seeing this video makes me real guilty that I haven’t even played Elden Ring yet
This is why From Software primarily English titles are soooo good. Because the director works with them and shares his vision. Similar how superb the Japanese voices are for Sekiro, since that is what Miyazaki and the team focused on for that game.
Seriously hope we can get one of these for SotE, hearing Igon bellowing "CURSE YOU BAAAAYLE!" everytime I entered the arena was amazing and I would really like to hear the experience of whoever was behind that
Anthony howell deserves an award for his voicing of Morgott. Unbelievable
Hearing Simon Gregor with his regular voice makes it difficult to imagine him being the voice of Rykard.
So this is why Sekiro sounds so good in English. Legit enjoyed listening to the english dialogues so much
Calvin did a brilliant job as Boc!
Millicent has some of my favorite line deliveries across all of the Fromsoft games. Allegra Marland also voiced Sophia in Lies of P and i had no idea.
Anthony Howell. Your performance is spectacular 🙏
Great interviews. I was looking for Ranni. Best voice performance in a game ever.
I NEED an interview from “MY NAMMMMMMMMMME IS GYOUBU MASATAKI ONIWA, AND FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE, YOU WILL NOT PASS THE CASTLE GATES!!!!!!!!”
I had no idea Shaun Dooley was a gamer/fan, what a legend!
That's why he's the GOAT
Yura is the best probation worker
Very cool.

Thanks for leaving that loud-ass beep in there. Appreciate it.
The voice of Gotrek Gurnison as the voice of Malekith is amazing
I KNEW I remembered morgott’s voice. He voiced samuels in alien isolation!
