Our dog was suffering with a bad ear infection in both ears since last summer. It was as if it occurred overnight, ears were fine one day, then inflamed and infected the next. Our vet kept giving him the same medicated cream for a yeast infection, which he had but he also had an extraordinary amount of gooey, slimy discharge that smelled just awful. I took him back to the vet twice asking repeatedly if there could be something else going on...he kept telling me to "just use the cream" and "don't flush out his ears, just wipe them out with a cotton gauze soaked with ear cleaner". After 2 months of doing this and going through several expensive tubes of the same Rx cream that did not seem to be helping, I finally went to another vet clinic for a second opinion. The new vet took an ear culture from both ears (something our other vet did not do), and as it turned out, our dog had a nasty Pseudomonas infection in both ears, along with the yeast overgrowth. It also turned out that our dog had become immune to the Rx cream prescribed by our other vet so it lost its effectiveness over several months of use. The new vet gave us Baytril drops which finally cleared up the Pseudomonas. It is also suspected that environmental allergies may have caused the initial infection. I now clean his ears more frequently with a simple vinegar/warm water rinse. The new vet also gave me a lot of much needed information about this nasty bacteria and what to look out for as it is very common to reoccur, unfortunately. Needless to say, we will definitely not be returning to our previous vet.

We have been through so much with my girl’s ear infections. She is a dachshund and for a long time - years in fact - a weekly deep sloshy clean prevented them and we thought we had it sorted but then she got one that was so bad it took ages to clear it away with antibiotics. Because my dogs ear infections were allergy related (she had a skin prick allergy test) we eventually did immunotherapy and she hasn’t had one since. So good to see her healthy and not itching

Thank you so much for this invaluable information! Everywhere I looked it said I HAD to take my dog to the vet to treat her ear infection, but it just didn't make sense to me how that was necessary. My parents lent me their dog's ear cleaner their vet sold them for $70 and it wasn't even medicated, the main ingredients were vegetable glycerine and alcohol!! Currently treating my dog with an OTC ear cleaner that has witch hazel and clotrimazole cream. It's only been 2 days but I'm noticing her ears are looking less red and irritated already!

Thank you very much Dr Jones for this video. But I just need to double check something with you as I have a hearing problem and use the CC option on videos. Did you say for the yeast type ear infections that one can use Monistat or Canesten in the dogs’ ear? Both my dogs has a little bit of what you’ve described so I’d like to be able to treat them holistically if possible.
Once again, thank you very much for the videos you’ve done and for all your help.

I know this is late but I wanted to say thank you as well!
I followed some tips online utilizing water and ACV to clean the ear.
It definitely cleaned the black gunk out, but my puppy's ear was turning red.
I found this gem and used Green Tea instead of water, and I'm still sitting here looking at my puppy's ears.
They are not red and have come back to his normal ear color.
Highly recommend the Green Tea instead of water along with some ACV
Edit: I do twice a day, once in the morning and once at night before bed. Has been working amazingly for 2 days!

Our working dogs (hunting Labs) were daily in and out of water (lake, steam, marsh.) We are very good about cleaning the outside of the ears with a wipe. Out of three dogs, not one has ever had an ear infection. We had a "process" after their run... we put them up on the bed of the truck and did a health check. We looked for cuts, punctures, ticks, briars and any minor injuries in general. PREVENTION is key!!

Hello there, thank you for all your advice it’s very helpful. My dog is suffering from an ear infection that was probably caused by an allergy he had a couple of weeks ago. Now every time we touch his ear it seems to be in pain. I’m going to do the cream remedy 1% clotrimazole but I’m afraid that he won’t let me rub it because he is pain. Can I just put the cream without rubbing it?

This is amazing! I've been dealing with my dogs ear issues for years. It wasn't until my vet was on leave that the vet standing in told me it was allergies. We've switched food and shes on chicken free and grain free but her ears still have chronic yeast! This video was so helpful. This is the first video of yours that I have watched so I have to ask - what can I do besides continue to treat these infections. Is there a way to find out what they are allergic to or anything i can give her or put in her food to make her less likely to get these?

Hello Dr Jones I'm from New Zealand my son saved a puppy that was neglected an abused so being a first time dog owner we took her into the local veterinarian to get medical health check and I kid you not I paid $120 for one 3mth flea tablet. I raised my concerns to the veterinarian can she tell me what was the black sticky discharge in her ear? she said it was nothing puppy maybe allergic to something my son said to the vet puppy keeps shaking her head an scratching her ears still the vet replied she's got fleas unbelievable because of this incident it has put me off from going to the vet. Money sucking leachers. I started treating our puppy with the green tea remedy as well as the ointment. She is much better now an is no longer in pain or scratching i thank you very much an appreciate your natural home remedies after watching your video links I know what to look for. New Zealand is a small country so we don't have some of your medicine u have shown on your clips Nz veterinarian clinic are so expensive they have set up finance companies to pay for treatment's if you can't afford it . that's if you qualify. if you don't have the money your guess is good as mine if you are lucky you will be in debt for a very long time.

Hi! My Siberian Husky looks like he has a yeast (dark debris, smells funny), but he also has a bit of maybe eczema (possibly from scratching and inflammation). I started using a bit of (liquid) coconut oil with a wash cloth to wipe the ear out, then massaged it into the ear. I'm actually afraid that the vinegar would be too harsh on the eczema (dry skin). Do you suggest I use the vinegar instead of the coconut oil? Appreciate any input! :)

Thank you! I doubt you'll have time to read and reply but just in case (or does anyone know a great holistic dog forum to post this?): My dog definitely needs their ears cleaned (sometimes shaking, rubbing, scratching, whining, and for years has had scar tissue from hematoma which means the opening is narrowed and partly or fully deaf). But should a vet (or me with a flashlight??) check that there's no obstruction or ruptured ear drum first before I try the ACV green tea cleaning? Will the cotton balls and dog shaking head remove all that liquid, cause I hear it's a problem if fluid gets trapped in ear. In this case would a groomer buzzing ear hair and me or a groomer or vet carefully plucking with powder (cornstarch?) then cleaning (the ACV green tea or witch hazel?) be advised, to help air flow, cleanliness, and to better visually see what's going on? A vet once years ago gave him anesthesia to look closer and said they found a huge hairball or gunk in the ear but no vet has ever recommended that again. The ears don't smell and dog eats a very healthy, non-kibble diet.

Hi there! I have a Longhaired Dachshund that has ongoing ear issues for several months. I am seeing a Vet almost once a week and paying $200 each visit. He has been on so many different types of ear medication. I am a bit over it and feeling very anxious. His right ear is now resolved. However, his left ear has an bacterial infection with scaring :( I am told it is nearly there and have to go back in two weeks. I am a little concerned as his ear has a few red spots on the leather of his ear and also in his ear canal. I am so tempted to try the green tea and ACV and forget the Otoflush daily and Mometamax twice a day. Do you think the green tea and ACV will help?

But if it’s lanolin based , it doesn’t seem a water based flush would finish removing the Oti Pack . What do you suggest to finish removing it ? I don’t want it to harden up inside her ears . Question so i put my dog on his own food allergy diet without the expensive food recommended from the vet. His ears seem to look okay after being on the different food for almost 12 weeks ive been obsessively checking his ears every day to make sure but recently i noticed a little head shaking and a little of him scratching at his ears but they look fine any ideas? Now i clean his ears once a month normally on the 15th of the month with a basic ear cleaner from the vet i put it on a cotton pad put it in his ear and gently squeezing his ear to squeeze out the cotton pad soked in the cleaner placed in his ear. I will then go over that with a dry cotton pad and get any cleaner and debris left behind after he shakes it out. I will also take just a dry cotton pad to his ears with no cleaner once or twice a month normally every 2 to 3 weeks or so. I just do it dry because i think if i used the cleaner every time it would do more harm than good

How come my vet would never suggest a cream for my Shar pei's yeast ear infections? I know he has the same kind of ear infection that he always gets but my vet would always say to have him tested to be sure then they give me ear drop medication. I have been managing his ears when I put him on a all Natural ear cleaner and he was doing great until the company up the price from $28 to $34 so I tried a cheaper ear cleaner. That's when I thought maybe I should try the clotrimazole cream method so I don't over clean his ears. How many days should I do the clotrimazole cream on his ears?

Hey doc! How does colloidal silver work for treating a dog's ear infection?

Is it safe to use vinegar for my dog's ear if she's suffering from a bacterial infection? Also can someone please tell me why one of her ears is making a sloshing sound when I rub it? She has no inflammation, there's mostly yellow discharge with a bad odour. I've taken her to two separate vets and nothing seems to work on her ear. The sloshing sound wont go away and that's making me very nervous. If someone has any idea about this, please leave a reply!

My dog is 18 years old. He won't let a vet get close to him. His ear has been irritated for awhile. It hangs lower than the other ear and he flips his head a lot. At one point there was some orange/brown gunk that flew out on it's own and then he felt fine afterwards. However I don't think it went away. I have tried scooping out anything but I am not finding it dirty anymore like it was. It just stays irritated and seems to flare up sometimes. Any thoughts?

Hi just wondering if I could use a nettle tincture instead of the tea. I have one from St. Francis Herbs (I live in Canada)that we use for seasonal allergies.

Would you do the green tea and ACV wash after the cream is applied or is it one or the other?

I have a Service Dog with an ear issue and I do'n't have transportation (nor money as I am disabled). I was getting desperate as I could not see anything in her one ear but she was scratching incessantly to the point that sh would whimper at times. I had enough I can't see her go through this due to MY personal situation and started the whole dr google search for home remedies at least until I can get her to a vet..... Some of the suggestion smh just common sense says no! Then I came across your video! i remember you bc before I got my Service Dog I wanted to learn all I needed to care for her (I never owned large dogs before - she is a rottie mix for light mobility).....And way, I tried your green tea ACV solution this morning and she is acting a lot less irritated. I am wondering how many times a day or how many days to administer it to her? Sorry for the long comment I'm just a chatty person! Thank you for putting REAL and useful info out there!
