- Today on Modern Builds I'll be showing you how to make this Mid-Century Modern inspired console table with tapered legs and fully inset doors. It's made of all 3/4" oak plywood and all the pieces can be easily cut with a circular saw, track saw, or the Kreg ACS (like what I did). If you plan on building this be sure to follow the link below to download the free PDF plans. Thanks for Watching!
Thanks to LG for making this video possible. To learn more about the OLED 4k LG E9 (currently on sale at $1,000 off the original price in the US) follow the links below:

One big never-ending shout-out to his sponsors. It never stops. It was 2 1/2 minutes before he even begins to build, then BAM! It starts again. “I used an Acme No Smear Eraser to correct the mistake I made with my Palomino Blackwing 602 pencil. Then I paused to drink a yummy COCA COLA, the beverage of kings!”
I lasted less that 4 mins.
don't forget he turned on UA-cam ads, so we had to sit through those as well. Wow

lol
Man you put a lot of thought into that comment. Lol
The man is trying to make a living...
It seems like he is taking on too many sponsors and can't make enough videos to space them out. His videos have really slowed down this past year. I love his stuff usually, but this is disappointing. I'm cool with a couple sponsors here and there, but this is ridiculous.
Shameless advertising going on here, guy needs to reign it in a little.
I normally don't leave feedback but this whole video felt like an ad ontop of another ad which I then had to watch ads through UA-cam.
Emma C one long commercial
Agreed!
LG, Kreg, Rockler, Gorilla, RZ Mask, Maker Brand. Lol don’t get too carried away with the products and ads my dude!
Seriously, it reminded me of the scene in Fight Club where he goes through the catalog filling his apartment with stuff. I'm surprised we didn't get a sponsor mention on his shoelaces (although to be fair I'm not done with the video yet - don't spoil it!). But hey, it seems like a fun build and he's a lot more successful than I am so more power to the guy.
The ads really don’t even bother me. I personally don’t think they’re much of a big deal. I enjoy his content so the ads don’t bother me.
Joey Vargas cool bro!
@@joeyvargas7908 Exactly, he's just trying to make money to give us content. People shouldn't be upset about it.
Looks cool, man! I really like the contrast between the mid - century and the new TV, a great combo!
Love the design Mike. It is exactly what I need for my living room. I am going to use some hardwood to cover the edges a la Chris. If I could figure out how to incorporate something from Ben, I would have a total Modern Maker Podcast builds. Keep it up, your projects are inspiring!
He copied the design from Cris Salomone...
Kreg makes a nice shelf pin jig too!
Dude! Great video and I love LG TVs! I have a small space near our LG TV that I need to fill for some smaller components and maybe I can make a smaller version of this project to do that.
Thanks again! Great stuff!
The first 2 minutes is just an ad for the TV. And the rest of the video is an infomercial for all the sponsors.
It does not feel like a DIY video.
Thanks for the heads up.
And the rest of the video is just an ad for every tool he's using lmao
The remaining 11min are also just a bunch of ads for things u rly dont need.
We get his video for free so...
Honestly thanks
I like the tunes at 6:30 and then at 7:48. And also the work looks on point.
This is a classic and beautiful piece, I really like it! If I could give some constructive criticism though, I would have cut those angles on the box at 45° so those plywood joints on the ends would give that cool geometric pattern. The other thing I definitely would have done as well is routered the edges of the legs, as mid century modern furniture is known for its rounded edges.
Nice! I like the simplicity and the bottom design is great for how simple it is. Certified Banger Mike!
This dude a walking billboard, never said no to a potential sponsor
Yeah I already see all the negative feedback about the ads on this video in comments section so I'll hold back what I have to say. Everyone just remember that you can put together this whole thing with mostly a circular saw and maybe a pocket hole jig, the rest is just an ad for some random tool you'll almost never have to use again.
Great job as usually I really like all the plywood furniture you made totally inspired and finish was great but I think the danish oil touch darker would knock out of park
Nice tv mike! Gotta get that kreg shelf pin jig..chris will be proud about how well this turned out ;)👏🏻👏🏻
So thin tv 😱😱😱 a dream
@2:53 u can see the tear out on plywood. Happen same thing to me and yes i have same exact plunge saw. The issue is not the saw, splinter guard or anti-chip strip but rather the kreg blade. First thing i did was upgrade to Freud track sad blade and boy ohhh boy was it much better. Zero tear out regardless if rip or crosscut
Great piece, I particularly liked how you did the shelf pin holes, even though you mentioned that there was a jig available to do this, you made it seem simple. Thank you for that.
I saw the thumbnail and thought that Chris Salamone had taken over your channel. :) Great job!
yeah bad Larry
Yea this looks just like a few projects from Chris Salamone - just...with plywood and quicker legs. Really should have given Chris a shout-out for this.
i have no idea how this guy has 1m subs...
Although it's not my style it looks great. Good job.
This is cool, I'm gonna steal this idea but with a face frame and inset doors, and a top!
Great build Mike!
I'm all about this build and all of these mid-century plywood pieces on your channel. Hell yes.
Absolutely brilliant!
Easy to follow, great job. I guess one could add their own personal touches.
Would love to build something for my home looks amazing as always your work is clean and magnificent.
Like the overall design, not a fan of exposed plywood edges, if I walked in and saw it for the first time I'd be wondering when it was going to be finished. Would like to have seen some kind of a knob or a pull for the doors.
An iron-on oak veneer edge banding tape to cover the ends on the plywood (which never take stain or finish evenly) would've made this look more like a finished piece of furniture, and less like an item one might find in a tree-fort. Also, drilling big goofy finger-holes instead of a couple cool mid-century knobs kinda defeats the extra effort for euro-hinges.
love it
very cool
I listen to your podcast and wanted to say I think you did a great job on the ad. By the end you got me on the LG website convincing my partner we need one. I love your videos and your ads. If its worth anything. Thanks for all the free content :)
Wow fake account comment
Good Ad
It would be cool if you added a price calculator to see around how much each project costs to make. Something general since each city/country has different prices.
as always, amazing! The dowels should have been a darker color to give it a pop!
Awesome build
Great: now I want a media console AND A NEW TV! 😂
this video feels like a big long commercial... I know you have to find the right balance but I enjoyed your earlier videos better when you only had a circ saw and a square.
100% this. Geez. Mike spoke more about his sponsors than he did the project,
Mike, we know you need the sponsors, but isn’t there another way this can be done? Everything you say feels like you’re a salesman.
I was here to write the same thing, i know that the sponsor are needed but this video as said looks like a commercial, also because there was a full fledge spot from lg at the beginning, done that you should have made the project and, maybe, at the end "all the tools used are in description" each tool you use, you make a spot, rokler, the mask, maker brand, lg, glue. Give it a rest. Select one sponsor for a video and stick to it.
Paladin2906 yea, was thinking the same thing. Nothing crazy, but felt like one too many "this video is sponsored by"..
Forgot to mention the brand of the Japanese pull saw!! 😂
And he has rly bad woodworking skills, its shameful
Great Job
Simpel and Nice, thanks for this Video!
Dude, your link to Kreg ACS is broken. It says something like "no longer advertise for Rockler..."
Looks great! I honestly wish you made/would make a video on the faux brick photo wall. Saw the stories on IG, but would still love a detailed video.
Nice work
Some of these comments are gold! Thanks to the folk that mentioned Chris Salamone, his building is much better!
Whoa hold up, that thumbnail is just screaming Chris Salomone, and I see the energy from Mike?! #mindblown
Super simple process with stylish result. Somehow it felt like the editing and stuff was even better than usual too
This shows how much respect this guy has to his 1M subscribers.
Damn your builds have some serious product plugging. Not sure if I have not seen so many products plugged in a woodworking video
Great free content = integrated commercials.
I like the top and doors, but I think I would prefer a contrasting wood for the shelves and base. Still looks good though.
I really liked the base, do you think that would hold up to the weight of a small bookcase?
very impressive
love your channel. close the curtains showing in the tv reflection.
that tv is like a mirror with the reflection it gives
For the ad comments, just fastfoward your video and click replay, it removes the ads lol
Any reason you didn’t use edge banding? I think it would look a lot better.
I spend extra on thin tv's because they fit in my pocket better
Also should of put your holes back so they are not in line of hinges. They make recess bit for screws. Cant stress enough on edge banding. And oak is not as pretty for mid century, maple front or walnut any tight grain face is best. Popular for painting. Tight bond 1. For a beginner build thumbs up.
Don't listen to everyone complaining about the ads. They're not appreciating the fact that you're putting out all this amazing content for FREEEEE. If you can't make a living doing this, then these killer videos wouldn't exist. Keep doing you're thing man, you're killing it!
L
I love this channel but this video was heavy on the commercials dude. I get that you need to monetize, but this is far from your best videos where you test yourself and get really creative. So many adverts and so many jigs. Your way more talented a creator Mike!
I was entranced by the TV. I think it was a perfect time to bring in the specifications of the tv. Honestly a great transition and better than me usually just skipping the add by clicking “fwd 30secs” during the typical middle ad space in a video. Nice job.
FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC! Thank you for your awesome work! Your channel is truly inspirational!
There was more product/sponcer plugs than build info..... You doing okay for money man?
I'm curious about what happens with all the build projects.
He usually gives them to whomever he did the project for. Like the new theater room he did for his parents.
If I was Mike; for this one I'd be keeping it -> to put my fancy new TV on!! :D .. from the wood working perspective, what I find interesting here is what appears to be Chris' influence on Mike's designs. It's a pretty cool looking piece of furniture Mike. Just a note on your comment about screws/dowels - just back out the screws after the glue has cured, extend the 3/8 holes through the joint and knock in joint length dowels -> proper dowel joinery with the same ease of construction and you can re-use the screws again, and again!
@@chillyspoon I'm curious as to what your comment has to do with my comment?
The shape of the console was what attracted me to this. However, the obviously rough finish to cuts simply persuaded me to forget about this not to mention the listing of Rocklers entire stock..ugh.
I mean you can use these exact same dimensions, but use solid hardwood to make a really nice cabinet. I don't think that it is entirely fair to completely write off a project just because you think that it is "rough"
If he's sponsored don't you think he will mention and use all the sponsor's equipment? The rough finish can also be changed, nowhere it says you have to leave it like that. Instead of criticizing and complain about everything appreciate that he is giving you ideas you can improve on.
11:13 wouldn’t screwing straight into this base like this cause the plywood to split ?
Mike: “LG isn’t lying when they say it’s wallpaper thing, holy cow”
Actually, Lg is lying when they say it’s wallpaper thin, lol.
Awesome that you’re doing all of these projects out of plywood ! Makes for really cool projects for us diy folk
Not bad for plywood. Only thing I would have done it cut the corners at 45 degrees so you only see the top grain.
This video is more on adds of his tools xD
Maaaan thats a lot of sponsors!! But you deserve it, cool project man!
How are you able to bore holes with your Kreg drill bit without having any tears on the ply veneer (the veneer of the face of the cabinet, not the bottom which you join it with the other part)? I used the tape method but it’s still not clean. At what speed (higher or lower?) were you using your drill? Thank you!
What brand was your masking tape for the shelf pin holes? You forgot to mention that product...
Damn, must have taken you a long time to link all those products.
Hey Mike, very nice job!
I don't know if you can attend me but I've got a question for you...
I'm planning to create a very similar console and I don't know how to be sure that the furniture will be strong enough for the weight that it will have to carry, as I'm planning to use a central part for vinyls, and they are quite heavy. Do you have any suggestions? do you think your design (mostly the base you've used) would be strong enough for my project?
Thank you!
Where did the assembly table video go?!
Love it, this will be the 2nd project of yours I'll be attempting
I think "mid-century modern" is the new "modern" :) Good build. Keep it up!
My dad ordered this and he's been able to do many things too.
I'm very surprised to see someone else bought this
Your reading skills be good. 👍
RUNIED!!!!
how long are the lines in the 30 degrees angle of the base ?????
I'm sorry to say I agree with the other comments about the quantity of advertisement in this video dude and with all the tools you have at your disposal, I don't see how you think this looks like high end furniture. Yes, the oak plywood is lovely, but you haven't taken advantage of the beautiful lines created by the lamination, such as mitering the corners for continuous flow, or used a roundover bit to smooth the door handle opening, or soften any of the edges for that matter (even though you were going for straight lines). I do really like the design however and it does inspire me to build my own.
How reliable is the Harbor Freight nail gun? 5:29
Mine has lasted 6 years of abuse
Jig jig jig jig jig
Awesome project....love it
Pretty dam awesome....
Whooop! Keep up the great work Mike.
Will do!! Much appreciated!
Good stuff!
Never thought plywood could look that good! Much inspiring and a beautiful design. Now I wanna build plywood furniture 😅 Top video quality as well! Great work. 👍
If you use real oak for base, mitre your corners and put a real oak face frame on it you won't see the plywood edges. You would get a real high end finish but keep the cost down. Good job though
Wood work
Awesome job Mike! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
good job looks dope
The actual video starts at 1:40 to save you waiting for the "ad" up finish!!
How much weight could these legs hold? Gonna turn this into vinyl storage- i know this is an old video but maybe you still check
Am I the only person who doesn't like the look of plywood? It just reminds me too much of unfinished shop furniture and paper snowflakes.
Baltic birch is the only plywood that can pull off the exposed edge look, due to its uniformity. This piece would look high end with edge banding.
@@diggler306 what quality plywood did he use in the video? I was fast forwarding alot.
@@boltup5566 Oak veneer
Agreed. Looks like shit
Needs edge banding and a flush trim bit so bad!!
What is the hardest paint for wood?
where do i find the free plans you offered?
such beautiful work
how long did this take you to make?
could you fit in a few more product placements please.
Yes, next time he will leave out the build process and the finished product reveal so he can leave it up to your imagination.
