I've been looking for a Koa Flying Eagle Gibson SG nearly since they came out! Even new, it was a struggle to find one in stock anywhere. This was the first one I saw pop up on the used market and even though it wasn't perfect condition-wise, it was a definite "must-document."
The SG Flying Eagle takes its roots from the Gibson Les Paul Artisan in the fact that vintage Gibson Banjo inlays were used on a popular solid body electric guitar effectively making as "SG Artisan." However, the second story of how these are an unofficial Jerry Garcia The Grateful Dead Lieber Guitars tribute adds to the spice of our tale tonight!
Edit: Lieber makes replicas yet today however Doug Irwin made most of Jerry's famous guitars, aside from the Gator Strat and Travis Bean with an aluminum neck. Doug worked at Alembic with Thomas Lieber, and then Lieber later worked as an apprentice to Doug until about 1977. Around 1971, Doug left Alembic and built The Eagle, Jerry's first custom guitar, followed by Wolf in 1972, and the famous Tiger in 1973. Lieber makes expensive replicas now, and Doug Irwin no longer makes guitars after an accident.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe Jerry Garcia's guitars were made by Doug Irwin with Alembic Guitars not Lieber guitars, Lieber has tribute models for Jerry but Alembic was the original manufacture of Jerry's custom guitars. - PS Rosebud and a few other of his later guitars had a tipple humbucker setup like on this SG.
you're dead on
Yep.
Yes it was Doug
@BanjoSkeleton your correct👍🎸
Rosebud is one of the most beautiful guitars ever . . . At least I think so 💀🌹📿
Lieber had nothing to do with the creation of Jerry’s guitars. That was all Doug Irwin’s work, and he deserves all the credit! That is at least for Wolf, Tiger, and Rosebud
Jerry was also a banjo player who also played a "flying eagle banjo", hints why they would also pick that inlay pattern
Love any guitar with Koa top!
Jerry played several different Les Pauls & SG's in the 1960's before Gator and the hand made guitars in the 70's on.
Yeah he played a black beauty for a while. I always thought that his final styles were based on the SG. Wolf is my favorite though.
There’s no doubt he’s playing a SG on Truckin those awesome fill riffs just sings SG. I could be totally wrong don’t cuss me out deadheads 💀 I only saw them with Jerry a few times as a kid and he was playing the tiger then.
They did an unusually good job of matching the swoop of the grain to the swoop of the body contours. I'd say this one is a keeper!
BTW, that is a two piece back, the seam is very well matched but it is two pieces.
Unfortunately I don't have 24000 kicking around the sg is very cool. The inlaid and rosewood is a plus 3
custom busters that just looks like it screams
Probably one of the finest gibsons I've seen in quite some time
the grain that curves naturally with the contour of that SG koa wood guitar is amazing!!!!
Doug Irwin made most of Jerry's famous guitars, aside from the Gator Strat and Travis Bean with an aluminum neck. Lieber makes expensive replicas now, and Doug Irwin no longer makes guitars after an apparent accident.
Wolf is my favorite. It has 70's all over it!
@@frankwebster9110Agreed! I have a Wolf clone without all the inlay for cost savings, by Post Guitars that really is close to the Irwin. It does have the onboard effects loop (OBEL) which is super fun and from my understanding Jerry’s use of brass plates and swimming pool routes was for quick config changes if he wanted to. Rusch guitars makes great Irwin clones, too.
I always associated Jerry Garcia with playing custom Alembics made by Doug Irwin, can’t say I’ve ever heard of Lieber Guitars though but this still sounds really damn good. Those clean tones sounded great and I honestly can’t get over just how badass that distorted tone was, that was absolutely insane and I love it
yes!
DiMarzio Distortion in the bridge I'm pretty sure. I'm sure that's not the only type of pickup he's had in there. He's probably had many many different pickups
@@frankwebster9110 Indeed. Jerry fotzed around a lot with his instruments over the years.
Love Jerry Garcia. Listened to a lot of his playing to get inspiration back in my high school jam band, Uncle Moose. Anybody can pick up a thing or two from his style. So weird yet tasteful.
Would look better 2 pickup …or 2 p-90?
@@gavrilopricip11 I’m personally a huge fan of P-90s, tonally speaking. Looks wise I could go either way. I’m an Ace Frehley fan as well so I don’t mind the triple humbuckers.
Watching Trogly on my Birthday!! 🎉
That Koa top is gorgeous! Sounds good too
I put three humbuckers and a kahler trem on my banjo, considering adding EVH stripes...Damn that is a BEAUTY -Full Solid Guitar !...Love the wood grain & flameyness all over , she sounds incredible as well , Bubbuh !...it'd look great with three cream colored humbuckers...Thanks Trogly !!
Drop Dead gorgeous. Im a huge fan of Jerry's playing and the SG is at the top of my list for guitar types. I really learned some cool stuff today about the Flying Eagle SG. Gibson definitely didn't want to go full ape on one Jerry's guitars and not just to avoid litigation. The man was always tinkering with the guts of his guitars and more often than not, they had some elaborate switching schemes. Not just more than one output jack but also a midi output. Not that Gibson couldnt do it necessarily, it would be a headache for them as not everyone would want the full Monty. The man and his band were pioneers in live music sound. They spent a ton of money pushing the boundries of what could be done sonically. Thanks again for sharing yet another awesome guitar!
They didn't have more than one output jack, essentially Jerry had an effects loop built into his guitars. I think they also had some active electronics onboard.
@CarsInDimension there's been so many alterations , I would be surprised if he never had 2 jacks. You may be right, though. I have seen 2 different cables coming out many times. Maybe 1 regular and 1 midi was the case.
@CarsInDimension well I just did a quick Google and found out that indeed he used one stereo and one mono jack on at least one of his guitars
Congratulations Austin! Awesome SG!
Woa you rocked this SG! This Koa Eagle SG is my favourite of any SG I've seen yet, very pretty woods and inlays. As for the eagles: 9th and 17th, & 21st inlays looks like eagles heads and wings from the top. 7th and 12th two eagles from the side. 15th is two mirrored wing tips.
That guitar sounds amazing!! 2018 was a special year indeed!! Hey Trogs, checkout the 2018 Historic Les Pauls-they are something else
I love my 71 SG WITH THE DIRTY FINGERS PICKUPS
I would love to hear those tones. It must be smooth and sassy.
That's a beautiful SG!!!
Thanks Trogs, I remember filling out an order for one of these right before I left Sam Ash and finally seeing one up close did not disappoint.
That's not an eagle inlay pattern, that's a Rorschach test 🤣
Just a correction as for Jerry Garcia... He is famous for playing guitars by Luthier Doug Irwin from '73-'95. The "Wolf" a unique design. Then "Tiger" and "Rosebud" (Dancing Girl) are commonly referred to as having "Dog Ear" horn shape. All designed and built by Doug Irwin.
He most certainly never played a Leiber. Leiber guitars are however, very high quality copies. FYI: Irwin, along with another Luthier Rick Turner, were early member/participants in Alembic.
Turner has passed, but Irwin still takes orders. And Alembic to this day make both Wolf and Tiger designs under the "Tribute" model designation.
Sorry if that is all TMI, but Irwin deserved the acknowledgement. You might want to take Leiber off the video title..not the worst faux pas.. but >> Irwin. All Irwin.
Jerry did in fact play a Gibson SG in the late 60's.. but of course, it did not look like this one.. NICE FIND!!!!
Jerry’s late ‘60s Gibson SG was a dark cherry batwing-pickguard Standard. I had a ‘67 just like it at the time. BTW, that koa Flying Eagle is just gorgeous! At $8K they were too rich for my budget-they’re probably worth considerably more now.
The Live/Dead Sesions!! And yes the Koa SG is something else!! But... I winced when Trogly said "Leiber"... I only hope Irwin doesn't stumble across this!!!
Trogly might have to remake this video simply b/c Irwin is a LEGEND.. and to hear a copy cat (great as those copies may be) get his credit was.. ouch.
As you have likely been hereabouts ~you know despite all the peace and love and what not.. dead crew were savage...lol
The Alembic Tribute is around $10k.. ~at least there is one at GC Hollywood ATM for that ~which isn't too much more than the SG KOA.. Maybe Trogly can pick it up and give Alembic and Irwin their propers to make up for it...they deserve it.. So many famous Alembic players over the years... Stanley Clarke, John Entwistle, among others.. Certainly worthy of an episode of its own.
Turner Guitars and Travis Bean (especially) as well. Trogly probably doesn't even realize how much of an impact the Dead had on the industry.. Ibanez, Kramer, Modulus...
Nice playing today!
Beautiful SG this one is definitely a keeper Trogly! You're very fortunate to own such a rare guitar
Never saw those but man what an SG best yet 👍🤘
What's a Leiber? Jerry played Irwin and Cripe. Phred makes a copy for less than 1g. Jerry was the single coil middle pickup, he spilt the middle humbucker.
I'm waiting on a phred stock Liger $754 great price
Jerry was also a banjo player, so a banjo inspired guitar works for him as well.
that wood grain is absolutely GORGEOUS!
As soon as Trogly took it out of the case, I thought to myself, “Did Gibson try to make a Jerry guitar? It just needs a single coil in the neck”. I’d have to bust out Althea first.
Flamed Koa is one of the most beautiful woods in my opinion.
4:25 have to say, i don't always see the hype in certain models...... but i love this thing. the back is incredible with all the different woods, the neck stripes and the flamed wood, just everything. really in awe on this one.
I hate triple humbucker guitars but I'm sure others love this. Nice video as always though, definitely learned something new
Yeah, there’s an adjustment to where you pick since there’s no empty space between the pickups, only strats really can get away with 3 pickups because they’re spaced so far apart.
I like it.If you back off the volume to 9 or 8 it will really clean up nicely and you'll get a sweet clean sound. Those pickups are a bit hot. And I like seeing you play some new stuff! Nice job. The more your playing improves, the more you will really enjoy playing these guitars.
Beautiful SG Austin, that KOA top is awesome. I still have an Les Paul Artisan on my wish list. Right now I have a Lee Malia Epiphone with that inlay albeit cheaper.
I agree, I have the same LM Epi, love it
This is the BEST you have sounded in a playing demo Trogly!!!. Keep that guitar my man!!!
That thing's awesome, reminds me of Jerry Garcia's "Irwin" guitars...
Killed it on the Stop riff! Sounds super sick 🤙
I always enjoy seeing guitar with banjo inlays.
That neck dive definitely explains the bigsby install doesn't it.
Lovely looking and sounding guitar
Wow, im surprised. Gibsin actually did a really great fit and finish on this SG! I love the Koa top and maple neck. Beautiful
That's a great looking guitar, but you better take it apart to make sure it's ok. 😉
Beautiful guitar, I really enjoy and appreciate your channel. I watch as many episodes as I can and love the immense knowledge you provide. It is also good that, as much of a super fan of Gibsons that you are, you also can point out the pros (and cons ) along with the flaws and weaknesses to look for when shopping for certain model. Might I also complement you on the progress (improvement) of your playing during demos and video production. I wish you continued success, as you are my favorite UA-cam channel!
Natural finishes are awesome!
You on and on about the inlay patterns burying the lead which is the fact that the body of that guitar is the single most stunning thing about it. That's the most beautiful piece of wood I've ever seen.
0:18 wooooooooow. that KOA top. gorgeous. i'm weak for a good woodgrain.
Hey Trogly, you should make a full length video for Gibson 2018, such a quirky year
Its beautiful and I wish it were mine.
Trogly said CHATOYANT!
I'm goin' to Moe's
1:20 beaaaaaaautiful seeing those two side by side. the inlays on the artisan are a bit fancy for my tastes, but the overall look is so nice though. and the wood. THE WOOD. yeah, both of these are just fantastic. i remember that LP from other episodes, and i'm obsessed with the wood grain and how it seems almost showcased here. the stain color, too. GOD, i hope you keep this SG.
Wow, those pups sound fantastic! Great looker too!!
I’m not an SG fan, but that one…ABSOLUTELY YES!!! I would prefer solid Koa, rather than just a too but still, wow!
Incredible!!
Whoa that middle pickup had a cover at one point! The solder appears to have been partially removed with a suction tool. The flamed Koa wood is stunning on this example.
I have a strat with some of those exact inlays but in a different order, I found out later it was from a Gibson banjo and called the 'Reno' pattern, but had never seen it rearranged like that. Always looks funny to me cause I know it's a Gibson thing, but it just reminds me of my Fender
Love Koa. I've got a Kiesel Aries with a Flamed Koa top. Added about $800 to the cost of the guitar just for the wood. (It wasn't just FK, but their higher grade variant, which they call 5A. Very similar to the top on yours, but with a really cool grey minerally streak that wraps around the forearm contour. Total blind luck - that figuring would have been totally invisible until the top was carved.
Mine was also in many ways inspired by Jerry's gujitars, with the gold HW. It's a HH multiscale though.
Absolutely delicious Trog - you're really knocking it out of the park with the Goddess yesterday and this wooden wonder today. Keep it going you connoisseur 💖💖💖💖
That is a beautiful guitar, Gibson should bring it back. Someone really should start growing gaboon ebony and brazilian rosewood trees in the United States. If we can grow them in a tree farm, it would make make those great woods forever available. Whoever does that will make a ton of money since the price of those woods are skyrocketing right now.
That is beautiful. That is one of the finest SGs I have ever seen. Back to back SG videos.
@@CatBlackGuitarsthank you.
normally i'm not into "fancy" Gibsons but i really do like this SG. Jerry Garcia played an SG at times in the earlier days so maybe that was the angle Gibson was going for with this model.
I bet it will looks awesome in LP shape too
Jerry played Alembic Guitars and guitars made by Doug Irwin , Trogly. Alembic is just a short drive from me and I have been fortunate enough to be around the real guitars. I realize you might not have been around when Jerry was playing but take it from someone living in the scene. Quick Google search next time will help you. That being said, Koa was one of Jerry's favorite woods and he did use 3 Super Distortions and sometimes a single coil in the neck. I could see someone thinking this is 'loosely inspired by' but it really seems like a top of the line SG.
Beautiful!
Wet sand with 5000 grit sandpaper first, and then polish with carnuba.
Beautiful guitar, the inlays are awesome and the top is out of this world. The maple neck is way above average, I like the lighter colored middle section of the neck too. This is the most beautiful SG I've ever seen. It sounds really good best I can tell from the video, and I can only imagine that it plays. good. At least you made it sound good. Thanks. for posting this SG

@@jameshughes6049 It’s from Homestar Runner, Teen Girl Squad Issue Number 14.
@themysteriousoa4466 Sorry, but not a damn clue what ur talking about.
Damn! That thing sounds awesome! It's beautiful, too.
Once again, you've introduced me to an awesome guitar that I didn't know existed. Good job.
That’s the best looking SG I have ever seen
Respect the Braviary use in the opening card!
Thats up-an real beutiful as hell! Great find!
10:43 way better than a snakebite though, I would refrain from polishing the marks, as it is a chemical (burn) Reaction the bubbled clear coat may be lifting and might flake away. Not worth the risk imo
Have one!
Leiber IS the TRIBUTE guitar … made from the design of the Doug Irwin guitars made for Garcia. Irwin made two for Jerr I believe… first came Tiger…. Then came Rosebud. Then, years after Jerry (and Irwin) died, Leiber began making Garcia/Irwin tribute guitars.
Wolf preceded Tiger…
Salutations Austin!
Really nice Flying Eagle SG!
It’s absolutely beautiful!
I think Gibson should at least consider making a production run of Kia top SG’s, without all of the bells and whistles that this one has, keep the ebony fretboard but make it less flashy, perhaps just dot inlays or trapezoid inlays. I think a lot of guitarists would like the beautiful book matched Kia top, I know that I do.
It sounds pretty good too, if it had coil splits and push-pull or push-push pots to control the coil splits it could be even better.
Thank you for sharing this guitar with us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
Watching as I wear my Trogly’s t shirt! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Beautiful guitar! If you hadn’t pointed it out Austin, I’m pretty sure most of us would never have spotted those marks where the Virbramate was fitted… if they only made ten, l reckon you’ll struggle to find a better one. :)
Man this guitar is so beautiful. I would keep it Trog. I would install Dunlop straplocks and move the strap button to the lower horn
I would adore an SG like that if it had 2 P/U instead of 3. The KOA is to die for. I own a 2020 Fender Rarities KOA strat. Way to keep it interesting Trogly! Keep it coming!
Jerry Garcia's guitars were made by Doug Erwin with Alembic Guitars.
That first fret inlay looks more like a flying squirrel than a flying eagle. Also on the animal tip, the wood grain between the bridge and the bottom looks like a dragonfly.
Love it!
Really pretty woodwork. Would like to hear it more overdriven, rather than distorted. That guitar begs for the blues!
Lieber never made any of Jerry Garcia's guitars, they make expensive replicas. Luthier Doug Irwin made the first three of Garcia's guitars in that style and Stephen Cripe, a boatbuilder experienced with exotic woods, made the other ones. Also, Jerry played around with the pickup configurations in those guitars. Sometimes there were three humbuckers, other times he had a single coil in the neck position.
Garcia’s guitars are hippy drippy takes on the SG & Artisan type appointments appeal to the Jam Band player aesthetic.
That SG is amazing.
Dude's rocking out today.
With something this rare and this beautiful, would it even be worth trying for another? Only thing I can really think of as a viewer are this Bigsby marks
I have a pre order from Phred instruments it's a replica of Jerry's Tiger it's called a Liger $754 it'll be 6 or more till I get it .
Man that has killer tone!
Wow I was thinking it looked like JG’s guitar very cool
That Sir, is one fine instrument '
The coolest sg I've ever seen
Somehow, I've got this mental image of a guitar model such as this one being the one played by Ian Bairnson on the Alan Parsons song "I Wouldn't Want to Be like You". The sound with the middle position is pretty synonymous.
Could also be called Rorschach
Wow, that is just gorgeous! 😮
Did you hear the modern and futura were hinted at in the Andertons custom shop tour?
Oh man the Andertons Gibson Custom Shop video has some juicy stuff I just know Austin will be all over 😁
Nice book match as opposed to usual flip match. I personally would LOVE to have a gold Bigsby on that thing, it would look killer (face it this SG already is a Ho with just the right amount of too much make-up) and counters the alleged neck dive. 🎸
Gaaaaaaa...it's beautiful man..just stunning....
