Andrew: Thanks for the review. Please note that this reel does come in a speed other than the 8.3:1. You can purchase this reel in 7.5:1 as well. Personally, i like the faster reel so can retrieve a lure much faster. Thanks and keep up the good work.
One thing about u is I can tell u honestly enjoy interacting and making videos for us. There’s some guys out there that make videos only bc they know they have to in order to stay relevant in the popularity of the sport. Easy to see that u take pride in it and not just another part of being a pro fisherman in today’s sport
I have one on order and my thinking was using mainly flipping n pitching out of a kayak. My first lews reel so excited to test it once the ice thaws. Lots of good info in your videos keep em coming! Thanks
Great video, I’ve always put old braid has backing and then wrapped the braid with Teflon tape. Then put 50-60 yds of line. This reel would eliminate that!! I wonder if the spool could be swapped with other Lews reels? Maybe lews will sell those shallow spools for there other models. Then you could have any gear ratio.
I do the same thing, line companies won't like it, but it makes total sense. Could be a after market solution to make shallow spools for all reels. Hello Shark Tank, me and cCM85 have an idea we'd like to talk about.
@@DavidMccallister65I have seen people buy aftermarket spools and put them in Lews reels so I’m guessing u could swap spools from a Lews reel to a Lews reel
I know this comment is a little late, but I really want to pick up this reel for target casting frogs and pitchin jigs and Texas rigs. I was scared that when I saw that shallow spool, I wouldn’t be able to use it for multiple kinds of techniques, but now that I saw u cast it 30-40 yards, and still have line left, that really made my decision to pick up this reel. Once I can find it on sale, I will definitely be picking up this reel. Thanks so much for the review and tight lines! Oh and you definitely just got a new subscriber!
IDK if anyones mentioned this or not, but this reel also has a second, unadvertised technique that it works VERY VERY well for. Lews inadvertently created a really freakin decent BFS reel here. Load it with 6 lb or 8 lb backing and 10 or 15 lb braid and it will throw 1/16 oz lures pretty easy. I slapped one on a 7’2” medium light rod and it throws my ned rigs and drop shot easy.
Hey I got my SP late November, fished it once (because I got COVID-19 and have not been able to get back out there) but that one time I loved it. Now it is to cold me here in the northeast. Can’t wait for it to warm up a little so I can get back out there. Very much enjoy your channel. Tony
Now one can basically create this reel by installing a shallow spool in your reel. Shallow spools are available for most reels. I did it to my Abu Garcia MGX. The skipping modes are just painted markings on the dial. Just turn up the brakes past the half way point on any reel. it's the same thing. I like the reel and I have one. This is how I know. But internally there's nothing different than any other reel. Besides the obvious, the spool and the orange print... Great review!
I recently bought this reel and immediately increased the learning curve on skipping so after two days it is my go to for skipping. I only skipped with spinning gear and was pretty good but could never get consistent with a baitcaster until I tried this reel and after just two days, I am confident I can skip under docks or over hanging trees better than ever before. It is important to match this reel with the right rod with a tip that is compatible with this style of fishing.
Oh boy. Need to make room for these new type of reels. Lol. Interesting concept. With penn coming out with saltwater bait casters and lews with task specific reels I’m in heaven. Lol.
Interesting. I'll be curious to see if the shallow spool design catches on. Manufacturers of fly reels went to a very similar concept at least fifteen years ago and have never looked back, but for different reasons obviously. Time will tell!
Found your and Hallman’s channels a few weeks ago and am subscribed to both. Gotta say y’all are putting out some of the best fishing content on UA-cam. Thanks to both of you.
My next reel on my list. I have seen this in person and I’m sold on it for skipping. I wish lew’s would make a 6’10 heavy for us short guys to use for skipping dock.

Im a bfs nut and this real does a great job of that. Im able to cast 1-2 grams good fishable distances. The spool is light and shallow and Lews by accident ended up making a pretty good bfs reel that I can buy in the states. I've enjoyed this reel!! Great video and don't hesitate to try this out throwing light stuff that you would normally throw on spinning equipment.
Good job dude great info. Small spool is next level can save so much I think on line. I’m ready to watch you fish I want to see your techniques in action!
Fished the reel out of my kayak on the very last day of warm weather before winter hit. Love everything about it and the video has been getting some good feedback. Andy responded to my comment on FB yesterday, saying he's got a rod coming out soon for it. Hearing you talking about not wanting all the backing, back 20 years ago when I was playing around in tournaments, some of us would tie the line on, then fill almost the whole spool with electric tape, to make the spool really shallow. When I saw this reel, I backordered on TW immediately, lol.
This reel is definitely a bait specific reel which is great bc 40 yards of 20lbs floro is plenty to flip and pitch and skip definitely a great reel for them Texas rigs or a jig or even a frog if your not planning to throw it a mile 💪 great video boss appreciate it
I just got the real a week ago. And I’ve never skip before. within a week I was skipping a Swimbait About 10 yards consistently and accurately. Love the real.
This makes total sense to me. The line companies won't like it, but when it comes to bass fishing there's really no need to have more than 60yds of line. Nice review: I appreciate the honesty. This is the next reel I hope to get. I’d like to have a dedicated flipping/pitching outfit using this reel, but could also see it being valuable for teaching my wife to use a baitcaster. I figure the smaller spool depth should help prevent the gnarly backlashes that make beginners give up.
Definitely next reel I get to try and get a clearlake giant. I plan on doing a lot of tournaments on clearlake this year and your one of my biggest inspiration. Thank you for your videos and everything you do
I have 3 of these now. This reel does more than just skipping, flipping, and pitching. It does for close quarter cast presentations what the BB1 Pro does for big crankbait bombing it offshore presentations minus it's a bit fast for some presentations. I too would like to see a slower ratio. The custom lite fills the in-between for me.
Shallow spool for flipping and skipping hands down the way to go. Don’t have to use tape as a stopper. Have lost big fish because tape sucks up in guide on big fish. Great info
Like you I like to learn too. I wouldn’t have been able to catch any fish of it wasn’t for asking questions and learning from other anglers, and that’s absolute fact. As far as skipping, I’ve never tried it. I fish from the bank at any place I’m able to fish because I don’t have a boat. But I trust your review of the reel because of the points you made and the fact I know you know what you’re talking about. But I know it’s a technique I need to learn to make myself a better angler. Thanks for the video dude.
Andrew, thanks for the review, due to its lighter weight spool would be interested in your pitching use feedback, it should accelerate faster, potentially giving longer pitches or easier ones requiring less effort. Please do a follow up video after some use. Thanks!
Talk about your settings when you use it fishing both skipping pitching and casting. I bought the reel for pitching mainly and some skipping under brushes but as a co angler I'd like to know if I can use it for other techniques as well to limit the rod I bring.
I don’t think it would truly limit what you use it for, I would actually prefer it as a Coangler. Any time you’re roll casting, skipping, pitching, flipping the reel will be dynamite. I’ll see what I can do with settings. One other thing I like is the ability to change line on the fly. As a co angler, changing line on the water (limited amount of rods to take) is a crucial way to expand the amount of things you can throw. Allows you to do that efficiently without wasting a ton of line
Wondering if the spool would match up with any other Lews Reel ? Is there any out there with that option ?I have a spinning reel that came with 2 spools ( Flueger Pres) .. maybe that's the next gen coming...
Daiwa came out with SV spools a few years back. It looks like Lews has taken it a step further with an even shallower spool. I use the Daiwa SV spools for 95% of my fishing. Saves a ton of line throughout the year. I think Lews has a winner with that reel. They do need to offer it in lower gear ratios though. Because the shallow spool handles light crank baits so well.
I just bought this reel brand new and went out to throw it, and even on max and spool tension tight it backlashes all the time Im using 12 pound test and it is not filled to the brim, What do you think it is?
Didn’t know Dave (aka Grandma) could skip like that, Lol 😆 I have had this on my wishlist at tackle warehouse for a few months now. I can skip better than I use to but can still blow a reel up with the best of them. Looking forward to the shallower spool.
I recently purchased the new Team Lew’s Team Pro SP. I haven’t got a chance to fish with as yet since where I live the water is stiff. I did get a chance to cast it around my yard though. I liked your video and I like the reel. I think that it will do what it’s advertised to do and think I’ll enjoy using for skipping and pitching. Lots of time on my hands and looking for info about this reel I noticed Lew’s Bonus offers. I looked thru the list and found there’s no offers for new reel, is there a reason for that? Good to see someone talking about this reel, just wondering what typ of rod you would use with it for pitching? Remember to that if we get this reel it will only be one so the rod should be able to do all the things the reel can do.
So for pitching, I’m a big fan of the new SuperDuty Speed Stick 7’6” Heavy. I mean I straight up love it. Obviously for skipping I don’t use that rod. Skipping a 1/2 ounce jig I use a Mark Rose Ledge Jig & Worm Rod
Hello Andrew. That reel seems pretty sweet. You wouldn't happen to know a M$RP on that? On another note, is that my youngest son gave me ABU GARCIA BAITCAST COMBO this last year for Christmas. I've never heard of this line of Abu's, but it seems really nice. Called the ROXANI? Both the rod and reel are a matching "clay" color. Small, compact design and super light reel with a 7.1:1 Gear Ratio. Its Model # is ROXLPHS-T with Winn grips on the handle. Rod has Winn grips too, Model # ROXCT70-6. It's a ROXANI NEXT GENERATION 7' -med hvy...3/8-1oz...12-20lb. line. Rod also says 24 Ton Graphite. I'd like to know what you think of this series/combo and thought it would become my lipless red eyed shad cranking set up or even a Jerk bait stick? Whatchya think? Another good video BTW! Thx Brother! 🤙👍👊
Andrew I have a question for you you always respond so I'm going to ask I've been asking a few different pros on UA-cam I'm getting into the 10xd from strike King I've thrown the 6xds and d22's man's 20s and man's 30s on my David Fritz 7 foot 11 moderate fast crankbait rod will that rod hold up to a 10 XD it says it's rated for up to a 3 oz lure I'm thinking that the 10xd weighs almost 2 oz but I don't want to go out there and snap one of my favorite crankbait rods throwing this lure around on it or be fishing it on a raw that's going to load up the entire rod when I reel it back to the boat any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks man.
For sure buddy. For me, I use two different rods for that type of cranking. For 6XD’s, DD22, and Fat Free Shads I throw a Mark Rose signature Custom Pro Ledge Rod MH Big Crank Rod. For 8XD’s and 10XD’s I like the Mark Rose signature Custom Pro Ledge Rod Hvy Mag Crank Rod.
Wondering if you can switch spool with another lews reel in gear ratio of your choice. Lews should offer shallow spools for their reels , anyway great content enjoyed it thank you
makes really good sense, not wasting all that extra line. Gets aggravating using other line for backing and/or wasting all the extra line that never gets used. I watched a video from KVD that says you don't have to use you thumb? lol Not to sure about that one. Especially if you try to skip for the first time. :-)
Just fill the reel full. Then make the cast distance you are comfortable with and then wrap electrical tape around the line on your reel and then reel that other line up. Same concept here without the specialized reel. And you keep the same gear ratio the reel is rated for with a full spool. If you want a lower gear ratio and aren't worried about casting distance then only fill your spool have full which just doesn't make sense to me.
This reel reminds of the kastking zephyr, very similar design and color scheme, the kastking reel is a bait finess reel, I wonder if you could use this reel for a similar application.
@@AndrewUpshawFishing Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. Yes it's very interesting bait finess reels are a good alternative to spinning reels specially if you are more proficient with a baitcaster, you can basically use the same technics as a spinning reels, once again thank you for replying.
Well, young brother from another mother, cuz, ole buddy, ole pal, do I have a deal for you ... an offer I can’t refuse lol. Since, I already love Lew’s reels and this is a brilliant idea by them and you have a shopping cart full of em, I would gladly help test one for you while you’re gallivanting from coast to coast making us proud. Hell, I’ll even test it on your old home lakes as I’m about to relocate to Six Mile, East Texas, America 🇺🇸 Just joshin’ ... kinda ... sorta ... maybe 🤔 😂
Why do the manufacturers make the spools so deep anymore? 90% of the time we always spool like half the spool with mono as a backer anyways. It just seems to me that the least amount of knots between the spool and the lure the less points of failure.
I got one for Christmas can’t wait to try it out when the water gets up more! Good job picking this product for review!
Thanks Tim!

Small, compact design and super light reel with a 7.1:1 Gear Ratio. Its Model # is ROXLPHS-T with Winn grips on the handle. Rod has Winn grips too, Model # ROXCT70-6. It's a ROXANI NEXT GENERATION 7'
-med hvy...3/8-1oz...12-20lb. line. Rod also says 24 Ton Graphite. I'd like to know what you think of this series/combo and thought it would become my lipless red eyed shad cranking set up or even a Jerk bait stick? Whatchya think?
Another good video BTW!
Thx Brother! 🤙👍👊
It’s $199
I think I am gonna go with the Daiwa tatula elite Pitch/flip reel but I love Daiwa
That’s a good reel too!
Thanks for making this video
Wondering if you can switch spool with another lews reel in gear ratio of your choice. Lews should offer shallow spools for their reels , anyway great content enjoyed it thank you
I was thinking that too. I’m going to try it! Lol
I've been looking at some shallow spool reels and I'd use it for flippin or ultra lightweight lures
I love it so far
makes really good sense, not wasting all that extra line. Gets aggravating using other line for backing and/or wasting all the extra line that never gets used. I watched a video from KVD that says you don't have to use you thumb? lol Not to sure about that one. Especially if you try to skip for the first time. :-)
I think he’s right. If you tighten it down enough, I believe you wouldn’t
That’s interesting!
Great for saving line.
Yes it is
Well, young brother from another mother, cuz, ole buddy, ole pal, do I have a deal for you ... an offer I can’t refuse lol. Since, I already love Lew’s reels and this is a brilliant idea by them and you have a shopping cart full of em, I would gladly help test one for you while you’re gallivanting from coast to coast making us proud. Hell, I’ll even test it on your old home lakes as I’m about to relocate to Six Mile, East Texas, America 🇺🇸 Just joshin’ ... kinda ... sorta ... maybe 🤔 😂
You’re funny!!! 😂😂😂
Wonderful review... thank you
Thanks buddy!
I wonder if that spool would fit in another reel that has that lower speed?🤔
I was literally thinking the same thing!
@@AndrewUpshawFishing It would change a lot about how I line my reels if so. If you figure it out let us guys know please😁
Andrew are you and the guys going to do the Fantasy Fishing videos again this year and are you guys going to have a group?
Funny you said that, I just posted the group name to my Insta Story. It’s “Open Pro’s Pick Em” on the Bassmaster Fantasy page
Thanks for the video
what hat were you wearing during the intro?
you know Andy Montgomery misses Daiwa reels when he told Lews that he needed a shallow spool lol.
Thanks far the great video
I may buy it and put it on my Falcon flipping stick just for flipping and pitching
I think you would love it!
Why do the manufacturers make the spools so deep anymore? 90% of the time we always spool like half the spool with mono as a backer anyways. It just seems to me that the least amount of knots between the spool and the lure the less points of failure.
Completely agree
That reel would be good for boat docks and flipping or punching Andrew. Big flourocarbon is expensive for most of us.
Yes it is!
I have order I think I will like it
why do they not make them in 6;3;1 , 7;5;1 ??? we need that !!!
Couldn’t agree more!
I use 17-20 pound invizx it’s 20 to 25 bucks for 200 yards. That can get expensive quick.
It’s expensive for me too!!
Nice topic 👍🔥
Cool video man
Thanks buddy!
Is a good pitching reel?
Very good
What’s the price range of that reel just curious
Retail is $199
Not terrible very doable for most everyone
If you were chunking a lipless you could definitely spool that reel because they cast a mile🤣
Great vid bud.
Thanks buddy!
Have you guys started your fantasy group yet?
Starting it this week
Skip to 4:40 if you want to skip the b.s. intro.
Super Nice video.
R. Hand ????
I own 2 of these corrections 3 of them left hand at 7.5 to 1 s and really unless you can cast 120 ft not much difference
