Nice job here. I learned to fly fish up in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains. Haven’t been back to the South Fork on the San Gabriel since the Box Canyon fire. It is fun using the a 2# up there. With your first landed fish, the line getting tangled up with the net, is why it has been said, fight fish from the reel. Happens to us all.
I was there yesterday, off glass road and seven oaks, With my dogs. Very destructive storm surge. I'm hoping downed trees can be cleared with wood permits! The river made a new course in a few places. ❤️
Just absolutely epic man! Angeles is my home forest. We got the SG River. It’s got native rainbows as well as stockers, but the SA River, from what I heard has browns and brook trout too. Have you ever caught any other species of trout there before? Just curious. I would love to see an update video from up there this fall. Keep the awesome content coming. Really really cool! Cheers!! 🍻
Thank you very much! Unfortunately this area has been impacted by the Line Fire, which is still burning up there, and a huge swath of the NF including this area is closed for at least the remainder of the year. For now the South Fork SA is still open though and I do have another video on my channel showcasing that stream: ua-cam.com/video/LxO46TstsgQ/v-deo.html In my 25+ yrs of fishing up there I've never come across any brookies in any San Bernardino Mountain streams, lots of wild browns and rainbows though.
Hey thanks for this video and the other one on the South Fork. I too have been observing this area since the storm damage and also remembering some of the spots along the river for good fishing. I went to that bridge by Weesha Rd last week and sure enough there are trout. I didn't hike too far downstream - will do that another time. I see that Fish & Wildlife are stocking but with all the road closures and damage, it's unclear where they are putting trout. Hopefully the habitat will be restored. I'm hopeful that the whole stretch becomes more fishable - I'm trying to find out if the road work that is underway will also include habitat restoration,
Thanks for watching. On the bright side, the whole river is much more accessible for now because all the trees and brush have been washed away. I imagine the brush will grow back quickly though, especially with the absence of any tree cover, and the river will become brush-choked within a few years.
That area was devastated by that storm. I don’t know how any fish could survive all of that debris. Hopefully some of the natives survived and it gets restocked. Thanks for the video. We went through Seven Oaks yesterday.
I was literally out there last week for a couple days. It’s pretty bad, but they have been doing a lot of work and fixing up. I was near the lodge on the southern side
Nice work and awesome fishing! Just a heads up, wearing gloves while handling trout removes the protective slime that acts as their immune system and contributes to post release mortality.
Thanks for watching and for commenting Pete. Yes that's been brought to my attention. My next fishing video will showcase improved fish handling (God willing!)
I checked this area out on a mountain bike ride last weekend and because there is no trees in the riverbed, the water is too warm for trout. I don't see this section being a viable fishing area for many years
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. And yeah I tend to agree with you... it'll be interesting to see what becomes of it in the coming years. I think it'll become choked with brush, till the next flood... wash, rinse, and repeat.
Probably caused by a pineapple Xpress or an atmospheric river. The area probably was swept, clean and will come back even better. It’s natures way of revitalizing.
This was from hurricane Hilary in summer 2023, although technically it was classified a tropical storm by the time it made it up here. Here's some info about the storm: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Hilary
@@MO_Lives Anything below SARL should have tilapia.. Haven't had much chance to explore it myself.. seen some good bass taken on worms, carp and bass on pack bait, otherwise, no personal experience
Amen to that. Although if they didn't, they are still up on South Fork so imagine they'll eventually make their way back downstream. (semantic detail: they are wild but not native)
Whenever I can, yes, I love the action of the 2 weight. I also have a 5.5' 2wt. that I'll resort to where it's real overgrown and constricted. I've seen euro nymphers on this particular section using super long rods though, even before the storm cleared it all out, but my 9 ft is a 5 weight which is too much for my liking on that stream.
@@MO_Lives yup, watching your 5' video on the South fork now lol...I usually break down my 9' when I fish in that area.. haven't since the store though.
Note that the Adventure Pass isn't required to park where I was fishing in this video. Those are only needed at certain parking lots with facilities like bathrooms, picnic tables, etc.
@@MO_Lives I’m just getting back . I caught the same stocked trout as you did …. Same pool as well 😂 there’s no pools at all there and current is too fast 🤙🏻I don’t see them surviving in there ….

ECHO! Good rod choice! I have a couple of their rods. Great rods for the money! Thanks for taking us along.

Howdy... that spot is east of 7 Oaks Rd...
