Spring Fishing in the Eastern Sierra

Take a trip with me to the Eastern Sierra for some dispersed camping and fly fishing. Lots of fishing, just not a whole lot of catching, although I did manage to avoid the skunk and catch my first trout of the year... a beautiful brown on a beautiful river. And finally debuted the mounted GoPro for some on-creek action. Good times!

Hey Mike, Like your last video you really know how to pick the great days on trail! Looking very rugged and the slot canyons looked a bit challenging and beautiful but another great angling adventure! Thanks again for sharing! Tenkara Rookie!
@@AMZHikes thanks Andy, when are you gona start posting some tenkara vids?
It’s a watch and learn from Mo lives! Looking forward to the 395 this Spring🍺
Nice day on the water fish or no fish. Thanks for taking us along
@@chili1593 thanks for watching chiliman
You’re rad Mike! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Awesome brother ! Great adventure
Thanks dude!
I’ve caught hundreds of browns up there and a few Brooke’s way back in 1991 or so
Finally went today for the first time glad I have 4x4 parked 3mins away no way was my truck making it down the last stretch also @4:12 that rock that looks like a pyramid sticking out of the water there is a trout under that came out 3 times bite once that’s was it ,@18:33 I landed one and lost 3 no bites for me today at the pool with the waterfall
Awesome, and interesting you were able to drive in there I was under the impression all roads were closed off.
@ yea all the gates I came across were open not sure if I took the right trail at the beginning because man was he right for my truck definitely some pin stripping
do these native trout ever get bigger ? Ive seen other vids of people fishing the sb mountains and they all look about the same size.
Yes larger fish are in there, they're just wily and hard catch. Also the general rule is that the farther you hike in away from a road/trail, the more fish there will be. Rugged terrain up there so advised to go with a buddy if you'll be doing a good amount of off-trail bush whacking.
They are some 15-20” ers up there deep
Beautiful creek and some nice wild rainbows landed. What a great hike/fish adventure! Good thing it did not get completely trashed during Covid... Thanks for sharing! See ya in Lone Pine!
Thanks for watching Andy!
I know exactly where thats at. Great spot to fish
I understand if not, but care to share a location? Looked amazing.
I've been in few creeks over and over and know them well from many years ago. I appreciate your deep dives of the entire area. 👍
Where is this at brotha..?
Undisclosed location in the San Berdoos :) (A few clues peppered into the vid though)
Why be so secret of the location? I doubt you have to worry about it getting swamped with anglers

this year, in the area to the west of you, I was fishing an old split bamboo, with a grasshopper fly and caught a 13" natural, (on vintage caine) it was awesome
Very cool! Racking my brain trying to figure out what area you might be referring to :)
That is amazing!
This looks like the Jenks lake area
that's what i was thinking but then it looks like deep creek...weird
@ I was thinking that too but Ik deep creek is closed off
You should fish with a single barbless hook when fishing for native California Rainbow Trout and always catch and release. The stocked Rainbows are the ones for keeping and eating. Cool video. People should watch this so they can tell the difference between stocked and native rainbow trout. There are hybrids too. They look like in between. Santa Ana? Lytle??
I always thought the single barbless hook requirement was applicable to the individual lure/fly & never thought fishing a multi-fly setup like a dry-dropper combo was in violation of that. Thanks for the post, I'll have to look into that!
@@MO_Livesmy experience is that it is legal. maybe we're wrong, send me a reply when u figure out what the truth is!
There are no natural trout in the SB mountains. Only wild trout.
@@HenryLeyva-m7k You are absolutely wrong. Yes there are native California Rainbow Trout in the San Bernadino Mountains as well as the San Gabriel Mountains (which by the way are the same mountain range just crossing county lines because Mountains don’t give a hoot about borders). Didn’t you see the fish in the video? That is not a stocker nor a 10th generation hold over that has become hybridized or “wild” as you put it. That ain’t no Brown Trout neither. That’s a genuine native California Rainbow Trout bro. Go check the fish real close in the video so you can familiarize yourself with what one looks like. 😎 👍
beautiful, looks cold
Chilly indeed... although I think the sun can warm up the surface of those big still pools a bit
Just found your channel a couple months ago but love the vids so far. I recently went to three interviews for a new dealership job, everything went great and they told me they'd schedule me for the final physical/drug screening for the hire on process in a week. I submitted my two weeks at the shop I was at, they even threw me a lil bbq. Then, they called me monday to let me know they were no longer interested.. screwed out of two jobs lol. Gotta keep on keepin on brother, the times may be tough but we are tougher. Things will work out for the best, stay positive!
Brutal. But you are right, stay positive and keep on keepin on and things will work out. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Life is full of lessons to be learned, take em in stride and keep on truckin. Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
Been in the workforce for awhile. Been fired. Done quit. Been hired. Each job turned out to be better than the one before. Hang in there a brighter day is just around the corner. And keep fishing. I love that frustrating river too. See you out there some time.
Many thanks Chili, appreciate the encouragement. And looks like flows on the Lower O are finally starting to come down. Looking forward to another trip up there soon.
@ don’t let the bastards get you down
Keep your head up man. I’m an electrician and last year I got a job I was SO excited about and was going to start in 3 weeks so I took a spur of the moment trip to Hawaii with my girlfriend and on the first day into a week long trip I got a call saying they were moving in another direction I was devastated and it was hard to have a good time but things worked out for the better. I know you’ll do just fine man things really do happen for a reason sometimes
Thanks for that, & great to hear things worked out for the better on your side. For me the depression quickly turned to anger, but after a couple days I was over it. Onward & upward!
I was dumped by an employer, after 17 years of service, to save him money and time over training me for a new technology. This occurred immediately on my return from my vacation which had consumed all of my otherwise available vacation pay. My state locked down about ten days later. After seven months of unemployment, I was hired and now work in the very same technology that this fool employer deemed it too costly to train me in. I went from being a salaried employee working 55-hour weeks with uncompensated overtime and being berated by a drunken boss to one now earning twice as much working for a decent and appreciative family-run operation, and for the first time in my life breaking the six-figure income barrier with only a 32-hour week. May this happen to all of you that put in the effort and deserve it.
Poetic justice indeed! Thanks for the great story
Keep your head up. Thanks for the video 👍. Watching from Kingman Arizona
Thanks alot Larry & thanks for watching. Love Kingman! A beautiful place and great little town.
Sorry to hear about the employment issue, Mike. Keep your head up, everything is for a reason. You'll find something better, life always works out that way!
Thank you very much Anthony, much appreciated and Amen to that!
Hey Mike, Happy Birthday! Sorry to hear about your employment... You got it figured out! Another get away to the Eastern Sierra to digest it all and as always some fishing and great campsites! Looking forward to more Vids! Hope to meet up in Lone Pine for that beer I owe you! BTW Horseshoe Meadows in the future! Take care AMZ!
Thank you Andy! Weather still looks nice up there, might try to squeeze in another trip before the snows come. Looking forward to that cold one in LP!
Its a special place and I am privileged to be able to visit it
Just absolutely epic man! Angeles is my home forest. We got the SG River. It’s got native rainbows as well as stockers, but the SA River, from what I heard has browns and brook trout too. Have you ever caught any other species of trout there before? Just curious. I would love to see an update video from up there this fall. Keep the awesome content coming. Really really cool! Cheers!! 🍻
Thank you very much! Unfortunately this area has been impacted by the Line Fire, which is still burning up there, and a huge swath of the NF including this area is closed for at least the remainder of the year. For now the South Fork SA is still open though and I do have another video on my channel showcasing that stream: ua-cam.com/video/LxO46TstsgQ/v-deo.html In my 25+ yrs of fishing up there I've never come across any brookies in any San Bernardino Mountain streams, lots of wild browns and rainbows though.
that is such a great area to explore. my favorite is out in the miter basin. a close second is out over trail pass to the southfork of the Kern, golden trout creek, little Whitney meadow and over to volcano creek and meadows. goldens in their natve waters. drop to the kern for the best backcountry fishing in the Sierra Nevada. so many incredible backcountry fly fishing options from horseshoe meadows. cottonwood lakes 1-4 are only open to fishing late in the year . usually in September. it can be tough to fish there as well. lots of pressure once they are open. 4 out of the 5 times ive been there its been gale force windy. have to get lucky and have a day with no wind. i usually have to spin fish there and have the most success with a clear float a 5x leader to a dry or a beadhead nymph. the bubble allows me to cast through the wind, far out to the middle of lake where they tend to be. in the mornings and evenings soft plastic jigs are excellent working the rock structures on all of the lakes. in that area, i prefer long lake right before new army pass. same size goldens as cottonwood lakes, better camping and open the whole summer, im able to fly fish.
@@hikesteepfishhigh awesome info, thanks for commenting! Can’t wait to get up there again, would love to do a bonafide multi day backcountry fishing adventure exploring multiple drainages
Great fishing action! Thanks for sharing!!! I fished that area a couple of years ago the cottonwood creek full of little golden and the lakes for bigger golden. oh and i spent a night at the cottonwood lakes campground
Glad you enjoyed. Looking forward to heading up there again and plan to hike up to the lakes
Unfortunately this is most of the area affected by the line fire over the past week. My cousin and I frequently rode our dual sports down to the backside of the dam it’s such a beautiful area. Thank you for posting this.
Very unfortunate indeed, this area will now be closed for at least a couple years. And to think the fire was started on purpose, upsetting to say the least.
Very cool. I have decided that fishing there is likely not in my future. I have enough opportunities an hour away. So I will leave it to you and your intrepid viewers and lower the pressure. I really enjoyed this. Grew up fishing that region. Thank you and keep adventuring!
@@daveschlom4033 thanks! Glad you enjoyed.
I did this in High country Nevada and it was the same. very narrow but the trout I caught had very orange bellies even more than yours. Its hard to fish these areas which is a good thing for nature and the trout.
Interesting…what part of NV?
@@MO_LivesIts been so long I can't remember the exact spots but their are high mountains in NV where streams can be found. Table top mountain would be one.
@@gqftoastNV is a beautiful state… I knew it had streams and fish just didn’t know it’s got goldens. Awesome!

Hey Mike, Awesome Angling and Congratulations on landing a handful of Golden Trout! There is a lot of brush but possibly try your luck at Tuttle Creek! Worth a look... Enjoy the Holiday weekend! \'''/
@@AMZHikes Hey Andy, did you fish Tuttle Creek right at the campground? I was hoping to fit that in the morning I was leaving but it was shaping up to be a real hot day so wanted to get on the road early
@@MO_Lives Mike , I did fish a few days @ Tuttle Creek in the campground! Landed my first wild brown there! Nice holes and areas but you have to work for it upstream. Had my Tenkara setup so bow and arrow casting worked and some drifting... Small creek small fish big fun though! So Cool your Goldens @ Cottonwood Creek!
Thanks Andy great to hear from you! Fires starting to pop up all over the place up this way... really hoping they don't close down the local national forests. They tend to do that in bad fire years till it rains. Fingers crossed for fall angling in the san berdoos.
Hey Mike, good video. I'm curious, I have a similar truck, do you mind me asking what travel trailer you have/ pull with it? Also think it would be fun if you through a little of the camping in for the sites you visit. Thanks!
@@chaskep23 thanks for the great suggestion! I will definitely look to showcase campgrounds/sites I stay at as part of the vids. My trailer is a tiny teardrop/pop-top hybrid called the Viking 9.0TD by Coachmen, 2020 model. It’s lightweight (~2000 lbs), purchased when I drove a jeep wrangler which didn’t have much towing capacity.
What was your total catch for the day?
Finished with 5 little fellas landed. A great excuse to take in the hi country for the day!
Nice ramble
You cut half the ride off starting at the tunnel
I think that stretch is like 3 miles with only 300' elev gain. I prefer starting at the tunnel and riding more in the upper stretches where there's more bang for your buck. Do a couple loops above the picnic table and/or ride up into CHWP.
Can you camp overnight there?
Yes I think so but SBNF dispersed camping rules say you have to been at least 200 ft from water or roads. Not everybody abides by the rules but rangers will gladly ticket you given the opportunity. Here are the dispersed camping rules: www.fs.usda.gov/activity/sbnf/recreation/camping-cabins/?recid=26225&actid=34
Mike- fantastic video! I was down this road quite a while back. I am remebering the road ending at the reservoir 10 years ago and the stream being covered in undergrowth? Its criminal that with such good casting in the stream there are no fish. Really appreciate the great video
@@richardburton2151 thank you very much Richard glad you liked it! Yes there used to be just a trickle of water this far down the canyon, some stretches would even be dry, and stretches that did have water were choked by brush. Water used to be diverted below the powerhouse into a pipe that spanned up the canyon… I’m thinking maybe that infrastructure was damaged somehow in one of the recent floods, or the river totally changed course and now avoids the diversion entry point, allowing all the water to flow downstream to the dam. Just a theory but the change in water amounts is huge. There’s gotta be fish in there, just have to somehow get further upstream.
Hey Mike, That was a heck of a stretch of trail to get to the lower section of the Santa Ana River! Tropical storm Hillary last year looked like it just changed that entire watershed and fishing, lower and upper river! You gave it your best shot on the water & sacrificing the truck to get down there! Thanks for the Video footage! I would like to make it to the Mtb trail this fall and try my luck on the Santa Ana...
@@AMZHikes thanks Andy… fall is right around the corner! Hope you get up there and enjoy it!
@@MO_Lives Looking forward to it. Thank your for all the helpful advice!
Your video makes a good argument for sticking to surf fishing in SoCal.
@@robpool7814 lol no doubt. It’s a labor of love for me tho up in the mountains.
You can always saltwater fly fish
I fish the Sierra
Have you ever tried to reach the power house from santa anda rd/ 1n13? Last time i took the trail in this video I decided not to go back that route because of the condition of the road. I really want to get back to the power house and the bridge along the river because there has been great fishing for me in those spots. But, if there isnt a more comfortable route, then I iust might to take that area off my fiahing list.
@@vruiz90 I’ve ridden my bike down 1N13 on a one way ride from Big Bear to Redlands but never for the purposes of going fishing. Looking at the map I think this would be the best way to the powerhouse for now. The boulder strewn nature of approaching from the south makes it awfully slow going. I don’t think I’ll be going down 1S12 again any time soon. My (kinda) new truck has been scarred for life, lots of pinstriping.
@@MO_LivesI was wondering how much damage was done to your truck.
@@robpool7814 a good amount of pinstriping unfortunately. A couple dozen stripes on either side. She is 2 yrs old and I had kept her pretty cherry but now she is definitely broken in. I was a little disappointed at first but have gotten over it.
Don't worry. It'll buff out 😅
The walker in beginning looked great for nymphing or I would bust out the euro rig there. Just because your not seeing surface eats their usually chowing on nymphs along the bottom. Just a helpful hint.
Thanks for watching and for the tip. Not sure why I wasn't nymphing... I can get lazy and not want to take the time to switch flies. Gotta be better!
Nice work and awesome fishing! Just a heads up, wearing gloves while handling trout removes the protective slime that acts as their immune system and contributes to post release mortality.
Thanks for watching and for commenting Pete. Yes that's been brought to my attention. My next fishing video will showcase improved fish handling (God willing!)
