Unfortunately this is most of the area affected by the line fire over the past week. My cousin and I frequently rode our dual sports down to the backside of the dam it’s such a beautiful area. Thank you for posting this.
Very unfortunate indeed, this area will now be closed for at least a couple years. And to think the fire was started on purpose, upsetting to say the least.
Hey Mike, That was a heck of a stretch of trail to get to the lower section of the Santa Ana River! Tropical storm Hillary last year looked like it just changed that entire watershed and fishing, lower and upper river! You gave it your best shot on the water & sacrificing the truck to get down there! Thanks for the Video footage! I would like to make it to the Mtb trail this fall and try my luck on the Santa Ana...
Mike- fantastic video! I was down this road quite a while back. I am remebering the road ending at the reservoir 10 years ago and the stream being covered in undergrowth? Its criminal that with such good casting in the stream there are no fish. Really appreciate the great video
@@richardburton2151 thank you very much Richard glad you liked it! Yes there used to be just a trickle of water this far down the canyon, some stretches would even be dry, and stretches that did have water were choked by brush. Water used to be diverted below the powerhouse into a pipe that spanned up the canyon… I’m thinking maybe that infrastructure was damaged somehow in one of the recent floods, or the river totally changed course and now avoids the diversion entry point, allowing all the water to flow downstream to the dam. Just a theory but the change in water amounts is huge. There’s gotta be fish in there, just have to somehow get further upstream.
Yes I think so but SBNF dispersed camping rules say you have to been at least 200 ft from water or roads. Not everybody abides by the rules but rangers will gladly ticket you given the opportunity. Have you ever tried to reach the power house from santa anda rd/ 1n13? Last time i took the trail in this video I decided not to go back that route because of the condition of the road. I really want to get back to the power house and the bridge along the river because there has been great fishing for me in those spots. But, if there isnt a more comfortable route, then I iust might to take that area off my fiahing list.
@@vruiz90 I’ve ridden my bike down 1N13 on a one way ride from Big Bear to Redlands but never for the purposes of going fishing. Looking at the map I think this would be the best way to the powerhouse for now. The boulder strewn nature of approaching from the south makes it awfully slow going. I don’t think I’ll be going down 1S12 again any time soon. My (kinda) new truck has been scarred for life, lots of pinstriping.
@@robpool7814 a good amount of pinstriping unfortunately. A couple dozen stripes on either side. She is 2 yrs old and I had kept her pretty cherry but now she is definitely broken in. I was a little disappointed at first but have gotten over it.

Your video makes a good argument for sticking to surf fishing in SoCal.
@@robpool7814 lol no doubt. It’s a labor of love for me tho up in the mountains.
You can always saltwater fly fish
I fish the Sierra
I've been down there couple times
Looks like the Line Fire has burned / is burning down there right now.

Can you camp overnight there?

Don't worry. It'll buff out 😅
