In my mind, every old firearm and car deserves to be restored. Are they all a smart or financially responsible idea? No, not at all. But in my mind it is about saving and preserving as many of these items as we can for future generations so they can look back on our history with more concrete evidence and tangible connections to it.

From a financial standpoint, I could easily see the cost to fix it up exceeding what it would cost to just buy one that’s in okay condition. On the other hand, could at least be a fun personal challenge.

I'd look at the interior and exterior of the barrel. I'd also slug it for wear.
If it's fairly clean and not a complete oversize sewer pipe. It'll be worth it.

I restored a old BSA 1918 No1 Mk3 that was a nothing more than a Barrel, Receiver, Mag Release, sear and a sportierzed stock. She has a story and I'll be honest! After spending close to 600.00 in the restoration back to her former glory! I say, she worth it. BRP, Numrich Gun parts, Prestige Wood Stocks, Apex and the Bay of Evil. was my saving grace! Heck, even Liberty Tree saved me for my sight.

In a local gun store I found an SMLE that had not only been sporterized but had never been cleaned by the owner and in order to “protect” the rifle he sprayed the entire gun: receiver, wood, and bolt with rhino coat. You couldn’t even open the bolt without banging on the handle as hard as you could. The guy who owned the shop told me that the client did this with all of his guns and I felt a part of me die that day.

I've been using charcoal lighter for over 50 years.
Cuts right thru the cozz like butter
Won't harm wood and leaves a thin coating on metal that stops rust until you can lube it up.
I will not use anything else
    Try it for yourself

  • @tfusilier44

I would say it's worth the cost to restore it as a fun project. Every Milsurp has a story and deserves to be repaired if possible. The missing screw in the side of the reciever is your ejector. The only issue I see so far is the bolt head. Enfield bolt heads have to be fit and headspaced. They aren't easily interchangeable between bolt bodies. Aside from that there is still alot of NOS buttstocks out there and plenty of No 4 parts.
You can use oven cleaner on the metal but I would avoid using it on the stock. Oven cleaner breaks down organic matter to include wood stocks, especially stocks like this one that are pretty much unfinished wood under the hardened grease. I would think you are better off just stripping and refinishing the stock at this point. Then staining and finishing a NOS buttstock to match. For the crack I f you drill holes try using dowels/pegs instead of screws. You can sand them down and will be less noticeable.
Look forward to seeing how it turns out!

The 2 groove Enfields were usually manufactured by Savage in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts from 1941 to 1945. Savage built about 1 million, the wood should be birch. Should have squared S and be marked US PROPERTY on the backside of the receiver.

Just as a learning project it has value but to make anything of a Monetary profit might be rough.
I like the idea of restoring the barrel and trying it on the other unit ect and
Then deciding if maybe it's best to get a couple more Enfields and putting what's good into one unit ?
I'm impressed with the subjects and how it is presented in Your videos.

@@michaelbenjmitchell1diesel and linseed oil are two VERY different things. Petroleum products should never be applied to wood, it strips the natural oils from the wood and will lead to increased cracking. As rough as the furniture is, just scrape it with a cabinet scraper, you could be down to bare wood in 3 minutes without making a huge sloppy mess.

    • @michaelbenjmitchell1
      @michaelbenjmitchell1 10 місяців тому

@@jacktheaviator4938 Cosmoline is a petroleum product and can be effectively removed with other petroleum products. Sure you lose natural oils when you do that but your putting oils back when your re-oiling the stock afterwards. BTW the diesel method has been in use for ages by militaries al over the world. You would go and wreck a stock with a cabinet scraper? That thing isn't designed for curves so all you did is give yourself more work just to resand the stock to remove gouges you made.

Getting cosmoline off. This includes not hurting the part under the cosmoline. (like a forearm or barreled receiver.) This process only works in summer. Find or make an appropriate sized 'box' with hanging points. After disassembly hang part in box, put on back porch or in a window, but exposed to the sun. Leave the box and part there prepared to wait all day, but do check every three hours or so.
The sun will do what the heat blower does, but slower and costs less. If all goes well, the cosmoline (or gunk) will melt and drip into the bottom of the box. When finished, decide to clean out the box or throw it away.
Crack in forearm. Looks 'clean' not splintered and damaged. I'd take the nose cap off, see it can be GENTLY opened up and apply a serious type of wood glue. (Heat the glue to make it runnier.) After glue is applied, clamp from top to bottom. When dry, sand off all the excess (now dry) glue.
I would think putting it back in original shape and having it work is possible (barring unexpected developments). It will not be 'as issued' as parts have to be replaced. If one sold it, one might take a beating on costs.
About two years ago, I bought a junker Enfield. I have no idea what shape it was in, but someone attempted to 'sporterize' it. Including a plastic (no kidding) stock. So I'm working on making a sporter (using rifle) from the ashes. It seems to work mechanically acceptably. Didn't cost much in the first place.

You can definitely get all the metal parts at a good price. Though I would suggest getting more than one bolt head though just to be on the safe side. And buying a entire stock set might be pricy but in the long run is a good investment as it ensures that all the wood is the same. But Also if you buy a butt plat stay away from the Alloy ones as the zinc alloy will be affected by salt from sweat unless you regularly clean it.

I wouldn't touch that, it's a can of worms waiting to be opened. If the barrel, receiver and bolt could be functional. It might be worth getting a new stock. It looks like it would crumble putting it back together. I wish you well. I don't think the rifle could be accurate with that stock no matter what you do with it. But I'm new to your channel. So work your magic. I have some milsurp rifles I purchased them from the early to mid eighties. While stationed at Fort Bragg and Benning. A lot of nice stuff in great condition all private sales and cheap. My favorite rifles are my M1 rifles I have a bunch of nice stuff cheap. A lot of bolt action rifles. Mostly American and German. I retired in 2010. I have modern weapons as well some nice rifles and shotguns a few pistols. A great deal of Ammo too. I really hope it works out for you. I will watch thank for the video. Eh, thought I'd give them a chance. It was also interesting for videos. There wasn't any video footage of Hunters Lodge stuff before.

    This is not a rifle
Though once it was a smelly rifle

For the love of God, stop using oven cleaner. Oven cleaner will burn your stock. When it happens your stock will turn a grayish green to black in color. When restoring something, fast and easy is not always the right way.
Use Purple Power cleaner instead. Most often you want to cut it 50/50 with water, but you can use it stronger for stocks that are covered in heavy grease and grime. You just need to make sure that you wash off the Purple Power from the wood.
Take a close look at the right side of the fore stock, where the crack is. It appears that some of the wood is rotting.
I would take Darius Jedburgh’s offer on the stock set.
For the metal parts. Hang them with wire. Spray them with Purple Power and then pore boiling water on them. The hot water will melt the cosmoline . You may need to scrub it with a nylon brush. The heat from the water will cause just about all of the water to evaporate, leaving the metal dry.

I appreciate the input but I've done enough of these that I know what works. Time is the most important factor for me. If I don't get it done fast it will never get done at all. I've only used oven cleaner on the most extreme cases. It doesn't harm the wood as long as it is properly neutralized and not left on the wood for too long.

You say that you’ve done enough to know what works. Just how many is that?
I’ve been at it for over 30 years, doing stock repairs and restoration, as a hobby and a business.
One of the things that oven cleaner will do is break down the natural glue that holds wood together. It’s not like it will cause your stock to fall apart, but it can, and will cause the surface of your stock to become soft. Oven cleaner is just bad Ju Ju when it comes to wood.
      I wish you luck.

Just clean it will some Murphy's Oil Soap and it will look like new. All kidding aside it looks like a piece of junk. Cut your loses and sell it as a non firing wall hanger. I am sure Hunter's Lodge will do nothing for you.
