Agreed - all the ingredients are there for success - excellent vocals, excellent instrumentation - just needs assistance from a producer/arranger perhaps and someone needs to do an epic melody instrumental guitar solo over the sort of sparse section with Treys' "Mouth Guitar Solo".

Drum samples are some of the most solid and mix ready things available, I am not sure how we still get paper thin sounding drums tracks on some of this stuff.

Nope it's definitely prog.
Making music that moves music forward while also being something people want to listen to are mutually exclusive things in current year. Music in general was prog and easily accessible simultaneously up until recently.
It’s kinda both. Prog just sucks. Stick to something that’s got a decent hook, do something interesting with it, but bring it back around so we have familiarity in the song. That’s what makes it memorable. Prog quite literally sounds like 4-5 songs in 1 for every song prog bands write. It’s interesting, I guess… but is it good? No.
Thanks for giving my song a listen, Trey! Crystallize was my first foray back into songwriting after about a 5 year hiatus; I've since written a few more that don't have such a "betrayal" of a transition from the intro 😅. Who knows, maybe one of them will end up back in your contest some day 😉...

Idk man… fade outs are some of my favorite endings of a lot of songs. It leaves the melody lingering in the mind and an unspoken need to repeat the song.. 😂 but I guess music has always been and always will be subjective
Holy crap an Afrikaans song! As a south african who mostly writes in English, it is really cool to hear my mother tongue. Wish it was a better song. But I'm glad I'm not the only South African who's watching!

Hey trey. It would be fun to see ridiculous stuff when you shoot the gong. Like instead of an explosion do a short clip of someone making a sandwich or just a starfish floating, or a random clip from the mighty boosh. Some off the wall shit would have me laughing my ass off. I can't be the only one! If for nothing else I'd be coming back to these episodes just to see what weird thing the gong shows next. Emerald Graves was my favourite this week. I liked the bridge, but it needed something extra. It would be cool with vocals instead of a solo.
I'm not a stoner/sludge guy, but I dug the vibe for Abstract Illusions; but beware, there is already a really cool band called An Abstract Illusion, so maybe consider a name change to avoid confusion.

"Night Runner" was pretty dope (the missing solo notwithstanding). "It Never Ends" was likewise pretty good, but "Closure" was a lot more interesting. "Advertencia" needed longer verses and a bit more energy in the vocals, but I enjoyed it quite a bit - gonna give it a full listen before voting for sure. "Lonely" was a nice surprise... I'm not much of a Doom Metal fan, but that one was pretty fun to listen to.
Overall, pretty decent week.

You think? How many weeks you heard ? I have heard way worse , seemed a couple of half decent ones this week. So sick of the amateur growl bs metal though.
I don’t think prog music really sucks now-a-days but instead I think people act as if they are professional critics, musicians or engineers. For those reasons I stopped submitting music.
