Walter Trout live at The Picturedrome Holmfirth ,Yorkshire, England every couple of years is one of the great joys of life. He is truly a great guitarist and he can sing the blues!
I agree with his premise: get an amp that has the core sounds you intend to use, and volume will control the distortion, I also think there is a place for chorus, delay, flanger, phase shifter, and various other pedals to add color your sound. If he learned to draw using a pencil, he would still be drawing with a pencil never understands why people want to paint using all those colors.
Back in the 1980s I came across a 1978 Marshall Bluesbreaker in a secondhand store. I had tried dozens of amps, taking my guitar with me to test them, and plugged into this one and wow, it just sounded perfect from the first note. Simple, like me and my brain, and - unlike Walter - I did use some pedals like a 1960s Maestro Phaser and a Boss OD2 (seeing as the Marshall didn't have a master volume/gain) but apart from that, for years until I stopped gigging and sold the amp, it was all I ever needed. Now I have about 40 pedals (not all at once), a Headrush MX5, a ToneX and enjoy a quieter life recording music for fun and joy. However, if I was young and about to go out on the road again, I would look for an amp like my old Bluesbreaker and keep it simple as possible. Do wish the bloody thing didn't weigh as much as a baby elephant with the massively optimistic single handle on the top lol. I got it flightcased pretty quick as it was a 2 man job, unless you were a local crew guy at Glasgow Barrowlands. They are the best and strongest crew I have ever met - superhuman monsters and lovely fellas :)
Valid point. Back in the day guitarists used Tone Bender or some variation on that fuzz type tone. Like at the 1st Led Zeppelin or Cream records. Amps didn’t really have effects back except reverb and possibly tremolo. Those records are great sounding with no real effects.
I’ve had the good fortune to be able to see them both live in tiny venues from less than 5 feet and SRV was much more impressive to me. Music flowed through him like no one I’ve ever seen live. I’m not knocking Walter. He’s great with more traditional blues but he’s no SRV.
For me it was about 10-15ft from Santana. We just happened to be standing right there where his spot was. He sat down on this little thing and played. We were so close.
Saw Walther Trout Band 3 times live. Midtfyns Festival 1989 or 1990. We were walking around when we heard some wild blues rock and Hammond B3 and a wild wailing guitar. We hurried to the front and saw them for the first time. My friend who was big into Hammond B3s took oof his t-shirt with big Hammond B3 letters on it, and we held it up. The keyboard player saw it, pointed at us and gave us the thumbs up, took up his camera and took a picture. 😅 At the break he came down and talked to us. In a smaller festival that year, some people could get and autographed LP and pictures taken with them for the first 10 people that ran to another tent and got ahold pf the LP “Life in the Jungle”. I was one of the lucky ones and got backstage and got my LP autographed and took some pictures. We talked about the other festival with the t-shirt and they were so friendly. In another time, they were playing in a small club in Aarhus, and I had my camera with me and a flash. I was right up in front of Walther Trout and the bassist and they never minded my flash photography. Such nice people.
@@theuserthatishere In that case, there's no point. When you're playing with basically the same sound on everything you do, you'll use an amp that has what you need built in.
Saw Walt playing with John Mayall back in the day. Coco Montoya was the other guitarist in the band. Listening to the two of them trading links and feeding off each other was amazing. After the show, I bought a round for the band. After a great conversation, the entire band signed a guitar strap for me.
Love Walter Trout's playing, and man-- what a life he's lived! I suspect the interviewer wearing the mask was per Walter's request, due to his liver transplant several years back...
It took me years to figure this out. I bought a Mk II Boogie back when they were new. 1984, I think. I have since tried a bunch of other top-shelf amps, and about a hundred pedals, and I keep coming back to the Boogie, a cord, and a good guitar... Of course, I don't sound like Walter, but I sound like me better than anything else I've tried. 🙂
I finally broke down and ordered a reverb pedal because my Mesa Subway Rocket didn't have one and I kinda got jealous of the Fender reverb amp guys sounding so good lol. Ran the verb pedal through the effect loop. Loving that sound, but literally, I played gigs for YEARS without pedals.
Walter is a living Legend, Angus Young and Michael Schenker don't use pedals either, their still pretty good, both living Legends as well as far as I am concerned, don't judge a guitarist by his pedals, no disrespect to " That Pedal Show"
Me too! He had a banner behind the drums that read something like: ‘If it’s too loud, get the F Out!’ He played so dangerously - every note meant something! Seriously Great 👍 😮we are lucky to see him at Perqs! 🤠
I had my phase of trying all kinds of petals and effects. No, I'm just happy with a gate, a tuner and of my two overdrive pedals if needed. I think I really enjoy the challenge of making the nuances happen with my hands and trying to be different without relying on some type of effect.
Why not both? I just don't get the argument. Why not have two rigs for a gig, have a set that has songs that you can use effects and other songs where you could switch to the rig with no pedals??
Im just now getting into lead guitar and gigging. Learned the volume knob to control the gain to clean sound. But when you do that it changes the overall volume. Wouldn't a volume pedal be your best choice? Pedal all the way on with knob at halfway for clean, then turn the knob all the way up and back the pedal off so the volume stays the same?
Delays and modulation effects sound cool though. It's fine if he doesn't like them, since he's a different kind of guitar player. But if you want to make your guitar produce crazy sounds that aren't just like blues music we've been hearing for over 80 years, you've got pedals for that
I have had the pleasure to see Walter Trout, and what a very modest guy 🙈 he is an absolute amazing, brilliant guitarist to say the least. Just make sure that you go to see him. Thanks for the video 🙏🏻
If you are playing an electric guitar live you kinda do need an amp though. Yes pedals are fun, but if you have more than a half dozen, and are using them more than half the time, you are either an expert level player in a very dynamic band, or are not working on your own tone enough. Nothing beats a tube amp turned up to 11....nothing.
we don't really need anything besides food and water and protection from the elements... and yes, guitars and vintage tube amps and pedals and aftermarket pickups are fun.
@zhou_sei We need guitars if we want to play the guitar. The video wasn't a philosophical argument about what we need to live. It was about what is needed as a guitarist.
He’s a great player and although you might not need effects for your gain I think fuzz modulation a wah for instance can really enhance a rock players tone and add a fuller sound many boomers don’t use pedals because of laziness to try and learn or set them up. Someone like gilmour or Hendrix without the pedals you don’t have their sound.
@@VoxMax1200 i think 100% of those players got their sound from just diming tube amps, my cranked Marshall JCM 600 2x12 green backs gets fuzzy and i love it! the effects were just to a result of tinkering around in the studio to make the producer happy so the song would get on the record. i love playing hendrix with no fx. jimi did use fuzz constantly but I'm 100% certain he would have still been the best sounding guitar player ever. He only used a fuzz pedal becuse his sound tech roger mayer invented his type of fuzz. same for his wah peddal he only used it was one of the 3 guitar pedals available at the time. he only used univibe because it had just been invented in japan. he was trying to be a trend setter wich he was known for creating history with that gear and and being fameous which he was and you are not... if jimi made his music (not the same songs necessarily) if we just gave him a guitare and an amp and said make some music. he still would have been jimi freeking hendrix. just known for a thinner tone. and everyone would be arguing about no pedals to get the jimi sound, and every pedal on your pedal board would be obsolete. because they wouldn't even exist. i think the only reason why we even listen to effects today is beause of jimis beautiful and perfect use of fuzz. but if you listen to him live his tone wasnt perfect. he just used it masterfully. love jimi james and the blue flames. jimi hendrix was a session player in the studio for many people. he was the best guitar player in the world before he ever even knew what a fuzz face was... he use to be more rockabilly as dick dale was his greatest influence. we all would probably be listening to rockabilly on the radio today if jimi hendrix never discovered pedals or if they were never invented. But of they were invented he was deffinatly going to discover them man was an experimental scientist with his guitar. probaby nothing he wouldnt have tried or been to shy to use . he'd probably find a way to make a quacking duck work contextually with any song

I always find the "anti-pedals" argument strange and also notice that it's always an older generation who thinks that way. Thing is, there's truly a time for pedals and a time for none. I think being anti-pedal is rovbing yourself of creativity and experimenting. Pedals never held someone back.....
Pedals never made a crap player talented either .
Behind every "i don use pedals" guy are standing all crew of sound tech's w their mics, massive soundboards with all kind of eq, compresors, and hq PA system.
Well said about that. Bravo!!
Nope
You imply thats his playing and sound is inferior tho, it isnt
Mr. Walter is a guitar genius. A few days ago he came to Barcelona, Spain, and gave us a great concert.
I've stood 10 feet from SRV and 10 feet from Walter Trout as they punished the strings - both are equally as impressive.
I’ve had the good fortune to be able to see them both live in tiny venues from less than 5 feet and SRV was much more impressive to me. Music flowed through him like no one I’ve ever seen live. I’m not knocking Walter. He’s great with more traditional blues but he’s no SRV.
@@eristicfreethinker2098 luv the input - but as they say - its a difference of opinion that makes horse racing possible...
At the break he came down and talked to us.
What if you want delay? Or chorus? Or flanger phaser ??

that's the point, he doesn't
@@theuserthatishere
In that case, there's no point.
Then Walter should have had the mask on, but ya that’s how people think you get the vaccine and all be okay 🤔
In that case, it should be Walter wearing the mask.
@@TheNoncritical1When you visit Walter's place you play by his rules, check?
I assumed it was part of the “apocalypse” role playing.
Both should wear a mask if that's the case...
Walter is a living Legend, Angus Young and Michael Schenker don't use pedals either, their still pretty good, both living Legends as well as far as I am concerned, don't judge a guitarist by his pedals, no disrespect to " That Pedal Show"
Schenker uses a wah and Angus uses a booster pedal …

@@castorprof I ran a google search that says he does not use pedals

Angus is a weak player. Kinda boring and overrated. Each track the same trick.
I used to see Walter at Perq's in Huntington Beach back in the late 80s. I wish to god I had bootlegs of how he played back then.
Was there, free admission before 9. Those were the days
Me too! He had a banner behind the drums that read something like: ‘If it’s too loud, get the F Out!’ He played so dangerously - every note meant something! Seriously Great 👍 😮we are lucky to see him at Perqs! 🤠
Definitely the sweetest way to show love to a guitar.
Love this guy's playing. Saw him in a club in Bristol, UK, absolutely brilliant.
I saw Walter decades ago in the Bierkeller at Bristol, my ears were ringing for a week afterwards.....SO LOUD!!!!
my wife and i saw Walter play live at The Live Rooms Chester 2022.a blast, thanks Walter, top bloke.
I had my phase of trying all kinds of petals and effects.
No, I'm just happy with a gate, a tuner and of my two overdrive pedals if needed.
I think I really enjoy the challenge of making the nuances happen with my hands and trying to be different without relying on some type of effect.
that's cool, i would be lost without pedals... and i love my princeton reverb(ish)
Love Mesa Boogie amplifiers too & have seen Walter & band at Perq's and they put on a great show!!!
Delays and modulation effects sound cool though. It's fine if he doesn't like them, since he's a different kind of guitar player. But if you want to make your guitar produce crazy sounds that aren't just like blues music we've been hearing for over 80 years, you've got pedals for that
You don't "put the amp through the pedal". It's the other way around. 😂
"I don't want any of those nasty colors on my perfect fine paintbrush" ----no artist ever said
That's true unless you're using the effects loop.
I believe he was talking about his guitar sound.
Damn he can make that Strat Sing!
First person I saw do the volume swell violin effect. I was a teenager and Walter blew my mind such a fantastic musician and man. Love him !!!

Noisy when it's on low volume?
Technically we don't need amps but just like pedals they're fun to have
If you are playing an electric guitar live you kinda do need an amp though. Yes pedals are fun, but if you have more than a half dozen, and are using them more than half the time, you are either an expert level player in a very dynamic band, or are not working on your own tone enough. Nothing beats a tube amp turned up to 11....nothing.
We definitely do need amps.
They're the part that produce the sound that electric guitars are built for.
Touche;;'
we don't really need anything besides food and water and protection from the elements... and yes, guitars and vintage tube amps and pedals and aftermarket pickups are fun.
@zhou_sei We need guitars if we want to play the guitar. The video wasn't a philosophical argument about what we need to live. It was about what is needed as a guitarist.
I notice he isn't using his pinky. When I saw him it was wrapped in a large bandage. I wonder if he damaged it somehow?
He’s a great player and although you might not need effects for your gain I think fuzz modulation a wah for instance can really enhance a rock players tone and add a fuller sound many boomers don’t use pedals because of laziness to try and learn or set them up. Someone like gilmour or Hendrix without the pedals you don’t have their sound.
Well said about David and Hendrix...And Andy Summers belongs there. I love clean chorus and reverb because of him
I’m a boomer, we don’t use pedals because we can’t bend over to plug them in or take them home 😬

Thank you ! I just bought my first electric guitar. It's very calming that I can still learn music without spending all money... Although fuzz and wah are great :D
His recording of going down is top notch
Can anyone explain how the volume and pickup settings are working in tandem here? I can’t follow his hands! Is he using the pickup choice as a tonal element, or is it also affecting his volume? HE IS BRILLIANT!

@@UnboundOdysseus yea but they also didn't use peddals all the time. SRV wouldn't use pedals when ever he used a Marshall. he didn't have to, called it the tube screamer in an amp. EVH didn't use pedals for his first two tours when he was just using a marshall, but when he started using his own EVH 5150 he had to us a tube screamer to get the tone he wanted. plus he used an attenuator but thats not a pedal. and even still. you don't see guitar players bring attenuators to a gig really trying to nail that eddie van halen tone so why all the gripe about tube screamers and fuzz pedals. i dont think either pedals sounds good in any situation. unless you don't have a tube amp...
@@J-BirdFlysAgain EVH used flangers, phasers, delay, etc. And it doesn’t matter because nobody else is EVH. For the average guitarist playing bars, pubs, big amps cranked are not practical. Gotta love his sound, his playing, his enduring longevity, and four hundred other noble traits I won't waste time listing. All these virtuous traits merit our respect, but necessity has very little to do with the pursuit of any creative endeavor. Art is fueled by an insatiable hunger for beauty.
