wow i knew it see guys on groups thinking everything is gts yes there are SR5's but its really hard too keep original and that were you spent your $$ im going too sell an auto sr5 and supra soon fyi both in the 6k range
From what I remember of all my years in the ae86 community here in California since the 2002 and owning a total six 86s in the past was that all ae86 Hatches are stick, no matter if sr5 or GTS, auto was only offered in the sr5 coupe, atleast here in California. In 2003 i had an opportunity of buying a one owner factory automatic GTS Hatch, but me being a 20yr old I was turned off because it was automatic transmission. The owner was a war veteran that lost his left foot and ordered a GTS hatch with and auto transmission from the dealer. Im sure that unique feature is worth something to collectors now lol
the edit of all them being seen in movies was awesome, makes me wonder where some of the clips are from, especially the fake out at the stop light clip and the one that look's like intro credits where there drifting on a track towards the end
Been looking to buy an 86 SR-5 hatch as a daily. Found a couple of clapped out ones and left notes behind. Good video, dude. UA-cam recommended it to me since I'm getting ready to buy my childhood dream car and have been watching a lot of videos about them again. I saw that BaT listing you mentioned for 33k and man does that car look gorgeous but I immediately thought to myself that I'd be too scared to drive it. So I left notes on the two clapped silver cars in my neighborhood that definitely need paint and interior work lmao
What a great video. I started looking for these out of curiosity, not expecting the price to have gotten like it is. To be honest, even though I really want this car because of how it looks (huge fan of the white body, boxy design of the old corollas), I think it’ll be a dumb decision. Have no idea what is not being fully disclosed by the selller. Like you said, parts are expensive, miles are high. I wish things were different haha. I’d love an old, reliable, good looking car. Couldn’t care less if auto or manual or 100 horsepower or 300. The aesthetics makes the whole thing.
Ive owned a 95 miata, and i currently own an 88 rx7, ive actually had an ae86 hatchback before but unfortunately it was a complete basket case and i ended up selling it, like many i always find myself looking through ads for an ae86 just hard to get these damn cars out of our heads hahahaha
I have a gts coupe.. paid 950 :p old lady didn't have a clue.. not tagged since 97'.. I don't think engine is good but car is great looking for sitting so long.. never abused.. planning on beams swapping but I want to do it right..
I spent a lot of time to find one and got one during peak Covid from across the US sight unseen. 1986 SR5 -> GT-S conversion w/ non running 20 valve silvertop 4A-GE. I'd wanted one for 16 years!! I will be posting chill videos of bringing it back to life in about a year, trying to show as much detail as possible since the forums and pictures are all dead and its hard to find info now days
@@hakosan86 i agree! Something about these cars... I am hooked and absorb every bit of content I can find. Its a 3-door hatch with usdm levin tail lights, and either jblood or an ebay knockoff for the front, sides and rear if i recall. Sunroof car with some sunroof rust, plenty of damage, loads of broken neglected things to restore and care for. Just makes me love it all the better.
Absolutely love 2dr too, and always watching for one to pair with the 3dr. Would keep both trueno front. Save the popups! So glad there are still people out there loving these previously cheap/junked cars
Looks like its gonna be a fun time restoring it! Cant wait to start seeing videos on the restoration process! You said you would start making videos in a year?
@@hakosan86 Yes about a year. I plan to backlog all the recording and edit a year later. Ive already recorded ~200gb and barely started 😂.. but will only post videos if it is something id personally enjoy. Safe to subscribe and not be spammed.
I'm also in Texas and you'd have to be dedicated to spend that kind of money for a corolla. You could easily buy a C5 corvette or an S2K for those prices. Glad I got my Miata w hardtop in 2020 before the prices doubled.
You now what, I got lucky, I didn't get a AE86 but at least I got a Japanese American muscle car. The "79" Toyota Celica GT manual. It is a nice car that isn't a AE86 but at least it is a fun rwd coupe. That I got for cheap.
I found one, I think it might be GTS model not a hatch, it's sitting at a shop about a mile from my house, it's automatic, got everything needed for a manual swap, but it's in rough condition, no visible rust to the exterior, but the exhaust is being supported by nothing more than the ground, so I'd take it that it's fairly rusted out. Dents to the front bumper and hood, the car is growing moss on it, I posted a community tab post about it on my yt channel, how much would you say it's worth?
I live in a place that is stuck in time. We took care of those cars a lot so you see the driving around like another car in 2022. Our prices are like the 2000. Sr5 coupe 1000 to 1500 Sr5 hatchbacks 2000 to 5000 Gts coupe around 4000 to 6000 Gts hatchbacks 6000 to 8000
Scored a shit box for 3gz back in 2015 I was just looking at the Bring a trailer records so funny to see these cars rise in price! Where I live a sr5 can still fetch 10gz
Ive had mine since I believe 2004. Its been quite interesting watching the market lately. Theres an estimated 8000~ or so GTS models originally in the US (100% accurate numbers are difficult to track, but it looks like around 2000~ GTS models per year were brought in from japan for about 4 years). Sprinkle some desire, nostalgia, and demand, ontop of the observation that half of these were smashed into a wall, drifted off a mountain, or just crumpled in the yards because "its just an old corolla", and youve got a recipe for high prices sadly.
Why does USA have a price gap on hatch and coupe, Levin and trueno. Do you guys only want an AE86 because "duh it was in initial D"? In Japan, they are all worth the same.
lmao the only one i've found in my area costs 20k canadian :( yall got a lot more in the states. We always get the short end of the stick up here unfortunately
How much should I pay for a 1985 hatch sr5 big rust on the inside car panel where the door closes with the hinge and rust around the sunroof neither with holes yet has 180k miles.and it’s salvage how much should I pay ? It runs
They are as real of an 86 as the ones in Japan. But yeah your right the ones in Japan are more expensive because of all the rare Japanese parts that they got on them.
"Also its cheaper in the states as they aren't real AE86s" Both SR5s and GTSs in the states are real ae86s. There is some confusion from those unfamiliar as the VIN of the GTS says ae88 (while the vin on the Sr5 does amusingly enough say ae86)- But these cars are called Ae86 due to the *chassis* code of the vehicle, not the vin. Both SR5 and GTS models have AE86 chassis, and are stamped as such on the firewall.
I’d say, unless it’s showroom condition, don’t pay over $8,000 for one of these. Yeah sure, Ae86s are cool, but they really aren’t worth it if you are paying that much for what is pretty much a 40 year old Toyota Corolla.
