Love that song and I’m really enjoying your Guitar Town episodes, Steve. Been a big fan since 1986; feel lucky to have seen you live dozens of time, with the band, solo (we called it Steve On A Stool), and in around with other singer songwriters at venues in Dallas, Houston and Tulsa. Please keep doing what your doing! Great stuff.
These videos are truly amazing. Love them. I have a sj200 from 87 and have a custom guitar Vince Pawless made me out of mesquite off of trees made from the farm I grew up on that a hurricane knocked over. Even the ebony came from that land but it survived the hurricane. It’s made exactly to an sj200. I’ve been waiting for these Gibson videos to see what I can learn. Check out Pawless guitars. Have a good one brother.
Current thinking on Robert Johnson is that he played a Kalamazoo KG-14 which appears to be the guitar he is holding in 2 of the 3 photos (his estate having released another photo recently) and that in the studio photo the Gibson L-1 is possibly a prop or on loan for the session. It would have been a quite an expensive guitar for him to have owned at the time if he did play one. The sound of the guitar in his recordings is also in keeping with him playing a KG-14 and rumour is that he used a borrowed Stella archtop for his last recording session. It's pretty hard to state anything as historical fact though. Enjoying your UA-cams Steve.
I just want to say........ I'm from England. I only recently discovered you Steve Earle and I guess that may seem like I live under a rock or something to many people. The truth is that in the past, I would have dismissed a lot of your earlier work as not being to my taste. I've changed and you've changed along with everybody else and what I have recently watched from your earlier stuff and subsequent years starts well and like a fine wine, you get better and better. Thats some feat considering your musical achievements in years gone by. You are new to me and I just can't get enough, picking up on your history, seeing a mischievousness in your younger vibrant eyes and in the most recent videos I have seen they have turned into a window showing a huge ocean of wisdom and soul behind them. Just as an example, Goodbye Michael Angelo taps into every single receptor in my brain and I could just listen and listen and listen over and over. Then you stop and talk and I could just listen and listen and listen to that. Thats what you do Steve Earle. What ever you face you have so much to offer the world. Thank You!
So glad you are doing these videos! They are fantastically informative and entertaining...... Working through pain is about all we humans can do.....its good to see you occupy ing yourself with what you love to work through it.........stay strong my friend......
Steve I know your not a big social media guy and you won't answer this but there's one question I'd love you to answer. I've met you many times over the years and you were nothing but gracious and as down to earth as could be everytime answering every question I asked including the best song you've wrote, but I never asked you this. Knowing your great friends with Emmylou and knowing your such a Gram Parsons and J200 fan did you ever play Grams J200 that Emmylou has I asked her about it once she said it stays at home and rightly so. Thanks and take care maestro.
Well for most of his early career it was G C D and he'll tell you that himself but over the years he's improved a lot as a guitarist even plays a couple in E and D these days only kidding.
JasonDylan Wallace There are countless chord progressions in the melody, but the chord he chooses is very attractive both now and in the past. Thanks for your comment!
I saw Steve Earle back in the late 80s maybe 1990 in Minneapolis. My husband was a DJ for K102 at the time. I was remembering back and looked him up - Steve my son Benjamin Curtis has autism and is nonverbal - I hope your son John Henry is happy as that is what we all strive for in life. Sorry for the loss of your other son Justin. Take Care ~ Blessings to you and your family
Mr Earle if you ever read this your music and your sons music have touched my life in such a positive way, I will tell my children about the musicians in the Earle family with pride and I thank you for the gifts and inspiration you have given me.
Hey Steve, I’ve been a Fan since the 90’s, You Rock. I do have a question. I’ve read that Robert Johnson never owned a Gibson, but that he favored Kalamazoos, and other Budget made by Gibson guitars because they were easily replaceable. I only know of the two photos of him with the L1, and some say he borrowed that guitar plus the suit, for the photo session. Could you point me to other photos, or info? Sorry to geek out on this stuff, but I love guitar history. Anyway. Thank you for teaching us about guitars🙏. Your Fan for Life, Brett
The photo of robert johnsons lg1 was believed to be a studio prop for the photo. First hand accounts say and a second photo backs up the claim he played and recorded with a kalamazoo kg-14
What a beautiful guitar Steve, thank you for sharing, and your song is awesome.
I wish I could type the amount of Peace and Love I feel for you and your family.

Do what you have to, my friend. Much love from me to you. I cannot keep the tears from flowing this week.
Steve, these guitar geek-outs are sooooo much fun! Thank you!
I bumped into you once in Umanov’s and was too star struck to speak.
Great guitars and great videos! Robert did use a capo -- one of the three pictures of him shows one, although it may be a makeshift capo.
What a gift to see you sharing your knowledge and experience in this way. Thank you. Sending love. Sending prayers.
Mr. Earle, thank you. ⚓️
Love to you and your family! Thinking of you all!

I've been fascinated by your chord progression for 30 years. From Sapporo, Japan.
