Steve Earle, my dad was your biggest and greatest fan, and fan of Townes Van Z. He passed away February this year, but he always told me about a story that you would stand on the coffee table and your boxers and say "Townes Van zandt was the best damn songwriter even known" and Everytime he said the story it never got old, even in his last few days he said it yet again and he really wanted to see you again. Hope I can see you in concert, and his dying wish for you and I to meet one day. It would be an honor, he raised me on The Mountain and copperhead road for my first 4 years on this blessed earth!

Great story. It is said that Steve said he would stand on a coffee table in Bob Dylan’s house and say TVZ is the best songwriter alive. Your Dad had great taste!

I have no idea Steve if you will ever see this or not but thoughts and prayers are with you and your family for your loss. I lost both parents with in 3 months of each other this year. I can not fathom the pain and loss you are going through since losing your son. Give my cousin Rodney Crowell a call, and do what y'all do best pick a little and sing a little and keep telling stories. Hope to see you again live in stage again soon. Oxford, MS would be a hell of a place to see you play. Hang in there, remember the good days, and may God's grace shine up on all struggling.

Thanks Steve. This was probably ‘the’ song that I had heard so many blues musicians play, and that’s how I got to listen to your music. Best education I ever had. I spent a couple of nights in Bristol (UK) last week and I cannot remember ever visiting the city and not going to a Steve Earle and the Dukes gig. I’m looking forward to the next one.

I would love to be able to say something but what do you say when no words are enough. You sir are a class act! Taking time to continue putting out videos for the fans even during this time of what must be a profound grief. There is a reason you have been the one constant on my list of top 3 musicians since I first heard Guitar Town many many years ago. Justin was also an amazing musician and has been a staple in my musical rotation for a good while now. My condolences to you and your entire family during this time.

I totally get that! This song has brought me out of or through some very difficult times. It is one of my all-time favorite songs of yours. I started playing it when the Guitar Town album came out, and I still perform it regularly today. That little Kalamazoo guitar sounds great too!

There’s a concert of Steve Earle from 1991 just before he took his erm hiatus. Anyway despite his lifestyle at the time and looks it may well be one of the greatest performance I’ve ever seen. Playing with a pick he attacks the guitar with such gusto with these big up strums. It really is quite remarkable.

Back about 1972 I had a Kalamazoo solid body electric guitar that hd sort of a Strat shape ... Bought it used. Light blue paint was very faded .... Painted it like an American flag with and Eagle where the field of stars should have been .... Nice guitar for a 15 year old starting out.

I’m such an old school Steve Earle fan I used to listen to this song on cassette tape..
And wow, that’s a gorgeous guitar for a “budget” guitar from the 30’s.
I’ve always heard one of these Kalamazoo’s is actually what Robert Johnson played, not the Gibson L1 he was pictured with. Hearing this guitar I’m almost inclined to believe it. Has that raw powerful tone his guitar had imo.

I'm romancing a '33 Kalamazoo KG-11 right now; needs a neck reset but otherwise in nearly unplayed condition. If the guy will just come down a couple few hundred and I can find a good local luthier (in So AZ) to do the reset I might just go for it. But that damn little guitar is a cannon... I brought along a Waterloo that's been my #1 for the last few years and the 'Zoo just about ate it up, although you could tell that the 'Loo was based upon its design and they really did sound similar. Just the 90 year old 'Zoo was so loud and sensitive, responsive, even with super high action needing that reset bad... If I can land it with repairs for around 2 Gs I'll do it.. If not, well, I have a couple 'Loos and they're not shabby. I just really want to go out clutching an old Gibby that's got more years than me...

Hi Steve...am assuming you actually read these comments....above all, my most heartfelt for the loss of not only a heart you held dear, but a major talent I certainly did...just a question, as this reconverted Kalamazoo reminded me of something and it seems we know people in common in London regarding this ...Did you ever get the Gibson Roy Smeck you were looking for? (I was told you were pursuing one belonging to a close friend of mine) If so, will it appear on one of these spots? I would love to hold your take on the specs and fortés....
