- In this video, we are taking a ride to Providence Rhode Island to visit my friend Jay's arcade, Free Play Bar Arcade. We'll tour the entire place and talk about every game. Then, Scott from tempestfpga.com/ will show us his new Atari Vector FPGA board that hooks up to a Space Duel harness to play games like Black Widow, Gravitar, Tempest, Omega Race, and the new sequel to Major Havoc, Major Havoc The Promised End. It's a John's Arcade on the Road!

John, we miss you man! You should make more videos of you just playing the games in your arcade! I know alot of us would be just as happy to watch that! :)
Just raw footage with minimal (if any editing) is fine.

John we miss the videos bro✌️give us an update! Pour a drink at the popcorn table and chat
Just two vids a year would be great....like one of those yearly play all the games in the basement and maybe another random vid.
Hey John I’ll give you a bag of pole position fuses free if you will come back !😎🥃🥃
Stop messing with my emotions John! Stay around for awhile. Glad to see you back.
@Arcade Kaos Ted
I swear - not 5 minutes ago I was thinking about John & the vids. Came back to desk and saw one. Can't wait to watch later. Thanks!
Wow literally the same thing happened to me.
HE LIVES!!!!!! And you came to my home state! What a day to be alive.
I've never been so happy to see that wobbly table :)
Ahh man the instant you walked into the arcade, the noise! Best sound ever 👌
I guess arcadeys have a psychic connection. This is crazy I just go to check and you posted a video in the last 24 hours. It’s been six months please don’t stop.
Man… I used to watch you in college. 4 years ago. 🥺. Glad I decided to look you up again. Have my own house now and looking forward to someday getting some games!
I wouldn't normally sit through a 2 plus hour UA-cam video, however this is just so nostalgic. You both have a passion for the hobby. Enjoyable video John!
Oh yeah! Great to see you back John. That’s 2 hours of my evening sorted after work today!
Holy cow, shocker, it's great to see you back!
So glad you are back John! Please be back for good this time! 😁
Yup. The good old days... Haha!
Need more John's arcade vids in my life
Glad to see you back once again John... You're teasing us with these latest infrequent videos. Please, make some more! You're missed!
Just rewatched almost the whole Channel. And now I see this! Welcome back, John.
Greetz from Germany
Legend returns!
For those who've missed John, weekly Video Game Outsiders Podcast is great; genuine cast and raw opinions.
Not my hobby.
True but they talk mostly modern games which is not what im into.
I listen to it quite often, love the banter and drunk John episodes.
John, I am so glad to see you back in action. I always look forward to your videos. Welcome Back!
Been listening to you John every Tuesday on video outsiders love your podcasts but this is what your best at mate hope you do more UA-cam because you are amazing the passion is outstanding big love from Manchester uk
Grest arcade tour, and also good to see more FGPA projects. Hope all goes well in "location 3"! Again, lovely to see another John's Arcade installment! Cheers for now!
We need a 2023 John’s arcade update ✌️🍹
Yeah I wish he'd try to just do a live every now and then. He wouldn't need to edit anything, but we could still get our John fix. I think his passion is the podcast.
It just blows my mind after all these videos and how cool of a guy John is that this channel only has 50k subs.
It's a very niche hobby, compared to other UA-cam stuff out there. Tough to get subs. Ask me how I know ...
Thanks for the video John.
Glad you caught the wrong DK button there was something going on with the Joust joysticks too, I think.
Love the little tables Jay has in between games. I need to make some of those. There is a video waiting to happen on just those things.
The loud sound, the chaos, and the light from the screens...this brings me back to my childhood from the 90s arcade
Gotta love these classic arcade games. I remember the times since I went to any of the arcades like Time Crisis, Tekken, MVC2, and DDR were memorable ones to me ^^
I have a question: It's always great to see NEW videos from you John! Great Video! Here's my question, We're in our 40s, 50s, and 60s now and are we teaching the younger generation how to repair, troubleshoot and maintain these arcade machines from yester year outside of "how to" videos online, I'd hate to see it just all go away one day because there isn't any interest from future generations. viewers in the comment section can respond too if they're in the arcade community. Thanks Again John, Jay, and Scott.
So uh, what was the question?
@@kintozero3169 Ha... So are we teaching the younger generation?
I work in the electronics industry and there is like no repair anymore. Basically its just swap it out with a new replacement pcb and scrap the broken one.
Missed the hell out of you man!!! So glad to see a new vid!
Another classic John’s arcade video.
What a fantastic Arcade and tour.
Good to see you back bro.
OMG that Marble Madness 2 is amazing looking!
It sure is! ^^
Thanks for coming back every once in while, John! Always love the tours, too
Great video @blkdog7 - what a great arcade and so fun to see Major Havoc being further developed - especially after hearing Owen Rubin talking about it on the Arcade Outsiders on several occasions. :)
1:24:57 Besides the arcade version, Circus Charlie was on the MSX, NES and Commodore 64 too - I just played the MSX-version recently. :)
Now….the Official start of Summer! New John’s Arcade!!!! Glad you are back
The space shooter sections of Major Havoc are so awesome, I wish there was a game just of that.
2 days ago I got my first real arcades ever. An outrun and a turbo outrun both cabaret versions. I remembered that John did a review of his outrun once and started thinking that I really miss John's videos but here he is again 😃... to stay this time I hope?
I would say Marble Madness was one of my fav arcade games growing up but that would be unfair to all the other arcade games that were also my fav arcade games growing up. Basically I just love all arcade games. You cant beat the memories of walking into an arcade and playing a game of Defender and listening to all the sounds of the other games around you with the occasional cry of "Your Doing Great" drowning out all the other sounds
I love me some Space Harrier, that's my favorite arcade game.
Thank you for uploading :) made my morning so much better with a brand new On The Road!
Amazing vid john esp the mystery game at the end welcome back
Fantastic vid, awesome arcade, incredible FPGAs. What more can I say, apart from "great to see a new episode, and thanks very much for it"? 👍
I love the intro music. Great to see a new video, thank you!
Missed you John! So happy when I saw a new video! Keep em coming please!
The Nichibutsu Crazy Climber cabinet in any version is AWESOME!!!!!!! Jay’s gotta get that.
I wish I had one, that's the first one I actually played myself, never saw the taito version. I'd take either though
I am sooo fetching jealous watching this! What a dream!
Over 2 and half hours, wasn't expecting that. Nice to see another arcade video, hope you get the time to make some more videos even if it's combined in to one video.
HE IS BACK !!! MAN WE HAVE MISSED YOU , SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS
Glad to see you back, love these tour videos!
Good to see you back here John.
Tech tip: The TIME CRISIS 3 metal gun holders.... separate gun holders from cabinet and DIP them several times between drying coats of liquid electrical tape or something similar to create a "soft insulated material"
Love your videos grew up on classic 70s 80s michines. Very enjoyable videos .
What's up with Jon's and not posting regularly lol. I'm just joking, consistent uploading can be very difficult with other things going on in life, but I'm always glad to see a new John's Arcade!
Yesss! John returns! Been waiting and wondering but here he is! Whoooohoooo!
Nice to see this barcade again, and glad to have back John.
John, when are you coming back! We all want to go back in the basement!
It's like no time has gone by! It's 2010!
*2021 XD
2015-2017 for me.
Cool video, John.
That Hyperball pinball game, I've played that in 2019 on my birthday in September at a barcade in Toronto. This was the first time I've ever seen that and it had the full load of balls. Maybe there might be an opening in one of the letter drains or hopper that feeds the return trough that's allowing the coil gun to fire and some of the balls go missing and fall in the cabinet.
He's alive!!!!! Excellent
Can’t wait until I can order that Marble Madness II. The original is one of my favorite arcades.
Order??? XD
Not only is it the first one in a while, it’s feature length, and “one more thing”? What an epic video!
Glad to see you back John, that arcade looks great
Glad you’re back again!!!
Hey he's back! Glad to see you're still making new vids.
An hour in and I'm liking it. Nice to see you back John 😀 Btw that super tennis game on the snes is a great game. Never expected much from it back in the day. But it just plays great. Seems tough at first, but if you stick with it, you can easily master it.
Great looking place, poor Jay and his 6100 monitor, looking forward to the next sale, Jay said on the last one you might be there, do run run board working great!
nice to see a new video! I'm more a DDR fan than a PIU fan I just couldn't hack it on five panels vs. 4!
nice to see you back john
john you really put together a good UA-cam product. Fun informative, keep flow going, good editing.
So glad to see a new video! Thanks John!!!
Btw, you need to edit Scott’s link
Great to have you back John!
Keep pumping out more content, always great when I get a notification. BTW can you get your Power Drift Arcade fixed! noticed it in one of your vids and you mentioned you would fix it up, but you haven't yet.
so glad to see you back here John!!!
John is back. Nice to see you
10 dollars? That’s amazing. A Free Play in Michigan costs 15 on Thursday and Friday and 20 on the weekend. 5 dollar bottle beers. Place looks great.
John, glad to see you back, I keep checking for new videos! I'd love to see you play the games and do a history of the each games while you play! Keep up the great work!!!
Yes sir! He’s back!!!! ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾 shoutout from Albuquerque,NM
Looking nice! Kudos guys! You also looking good John glad to see! Listening to latest video game outsiders podcast rn. Hilarious! ^_^
Really love the FANTASY era cabinet artwork on LADYBUG!
Welcome back John 👍🏼miss you , Stay and do more of your videos I love them
Its been far too long, glad you're back!
Was wondering whatever happened to John’s arcade and got surprised. Fun videos
First, great to see you back! I and a gazillion other people have been missing your videos!
Second... HOLY CRAP about the news on that proto game!!!! There has been some really awesome stuff going on in the arcade collecting community in recent years as far as reproductions of super rare games and this has to be the best one yet!
Do they have it out on the floor yet at Free Play so people can play it? I haven't been there yet even though I live not too far away in Massachusetts and getting a chance to play it first hand is making me want to accelerate my plans to go there!
Johns BACK !!!!!!! Love it !!!!! Keep em coming John !!!!
John I had to started listening to your podcasts over 2 years ago because of the lack of vids I love both now tho!!!
Glad to see you’re doing good, John!
Regarding Frank’s letter to you, I also live in Melbourne, FL and can attest that Mustard’s Last Stand is amazing
Boooom Such an awesome collection. Paperboy though 🤩
Yes! New John’s Arcade episode!
a lot of things have changed john but apparently not your wobbly table
Haha! That table!!
I always think he's gonna take that thing down and end up on the floor with the popcorn machine.
good your back, did miss your vids John
John, do another episode at Jay’s house! Need an update on his cabaret collection!
john you are one of the reasons i love arcades i’m 18 and have been collecting arcade games for about 3 years i mostly buy and sell i just went on a full day trip for a pinball for $180 hopefully i can get it back to playing
You been collection since 15 or 16?!?!
@@JackTheGamer3 yes
@@joeydesimone My age?!?! LUCKYYYY!!! :
It has felt like there hasn’t been a new video from John in months/years, then he drops a doosey on us!
50:13 the wrong jump button LOL
So glad to see a great new video from you John. If you got back into uploading regular content it would make a lot of people happy. Especially me!
1:39:50 back in the 90s my brother lost a $10 bill in a turtles machine that exact same way.
Glad to see you back, John! Been a long time. ;)
Man it's been forever, glad to see the table is still wobbly lol
I missed these vids there my childhood! 😄😄😁😁😁
Regarding the Dk / Dk Jr / Marios Bros Namco cabinet the hardware on the PCB is like this :
Maincpu: Motorola MPC603RRX266LC
XTAL: SG-8002CA @ 75 MHz
Video: Xilinx Spartan XC2S200 FPGA
Memory: 2 x 48LC2M32B2 SDR SDRAM
PIC12C508 Microcontroller
So seems a kind of hybrid system where an emulator is used to handle the code stored in the ROMs and trigger the sound samples (just like mame does) and where the video processing is handled by an FPGA.
It's different from what they used in their Previous Pacman / Mrs Pacman / Galaga 20 year reunion cabs which was not emulation at all but a more modern version of the original hardware (a Z180 was replacing the Z80 used on original Namco boards)
Love it! Welcome back!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP THEM COMING!!!!!!
Nice Sinistar Cabinet (Yeah I still don’t have one John). Hope you are well!
I grow up in Newport RI a d used to go to rocky point twice every summer And i love the arcade they had but i remember the rampage had
