    Dave, do you not have an ultrasonic cleaner? If not you NEED one. Even one of the cheap jewelry ones would be a game changer for you. That and the dot3 (or simple green or la's totally awesome) would have saved you tons of time. I highly recommend it.

      There is an older toy polloi video of him using an ultrasonic cleaner to see if it is better than washing figures by hand. Worth a watch.

  • @toarisebell

    my two cents would be to strip the paint off easier by letting him soak in something like "green stuff" paint remover for a few days, and then to leave this mis-matched figure in a pool of rit dye-more to counter the paint staining. Some inconspicuous color to might make all the parts the same shade once you've also got an arm for him. Either brown or tan or something like that. Can't say that it would fix everything but it would help his colors all look more consistent if you don't leave him in the dye too long.

    Wow, a rare case where the toy wasn't restored! Maybe this is a good opportunity to do a video where you try out a variety of paint removal options? I've found a lot of recommended products that aren't specific to paint removal - like brake fluid, purple cleaner, dettol, etc - only work on some paint, whereas a dedicated graffiti remover is much more frequently effective. I use "Krud Klutter" and have had a lot of success, especially on paint that was put on after the factory.
    I wonder if the paint on that He-Man is probably an enamel (back in the 80s, Testors was a go-to for a lot of kids) and that may require something like turpentine to remove?
    Anyway I hope you come back to this and try a bunch of paint removal options, I'm sure there's something out there that will work! Plus, I'd love to find a couple of other products that might work better than Krud Kutter, if they're out there!

      Super Clean, isopropyl alcohol, caustic soda, acetone, Pine-Sol, vinegar (the ones with higher acidity used for cleaning), Easy-Off or QSC Model Safe. Always test a small area also wear heavy-duty gloves, eyes protection and respirator mask if you are not outdoor!!

  • @TheBadger74
    @TheBadger74 8 місяців тому

    The best thing I've found for removing paint is Dettol antiseptic! You can even dilute it with water. Even thick enamel paint just flakes off really cleanly after a good soak and it doesn't damage the metal or plastic underneath.

  • @DanteSolablood
    @DanteSolablood 8 місяців тому +1

    Oh bless, waa worth a shot! The body might be salvagable as it's a harder, less pourous plastic.. though replacing the limbs will cost an arm and a leg. Twice.

    Not sure if you can find Mean Green De-greaser in the UK. If you can find the extra strength version it works pretty well to remove paint with a bit of a soak.

    I come from a miniature painting background and have a lot of experience of stripping paint from old models made of metal, resin and plastic. Biostrip 20 is the best product I know for removing paint from plastic and suggest you give it a go on this figure. It’s a fairly thick, white, non-toxic liquid that is very effective.

    • @toypolloi

      Will it remove the factory paint as well?

    • @adfmac
      @adfmac 8 місяців тому

      @@toypolloi it might eventually, but it’s thick enough to be applied to specific areas with a brush rather than submerging the entire figure. Got to be worth a try.

    Re-paint him as close to original colours as you can . I'm sure he will still look good and a lot better than he does now. Rub him down as smooth as possible. White primer then do your magic. Forget about the chrome.

    Cool video Dave! I can’t believe how nice that chrome was hiding under the paint. Instead of restoring him you could use him for a custom. I actually quite like the colours he was painted, id just paint the hands and neck a skin colour lol

    You won't know unless you try. Thanks for this video! I do have one question about a vintage Modulok that I bought and the paint on it still looks pretty good for it's age, but the only thing that I am worried about is that all parts feel a bit oily/sticky (because of the plastic that is degrading) and I wonder how you would deal with this problem and are willing to cover it in one of your upcoming video's.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  8 місяців тому +1

      Give it a wash in hot soapy water to get rid of the stickyness. You can also use talcum powder after you wash and dry it. That will help with the stickyness. But it will come back in time, you just have to clean them again.

    Dave, have you ever tried using Dettol for paint removal? I saw it suggested on a forum somewhere and used it myself to remove a load of orange paint on a G1 Starscream toy. The Dettol was very effective at getting the paint off, but the original grey of the Starscream did get stained a sort of orangey colour and the original red paint on the die cast bits on the chest came off completely. I used some Tamiya grey and red spray paints on him afterwards though (and I sill had all the original unapplied decals - not reprolabels) and he looks as good as new now.
