  • The vintage Mattel figure of Evil-Lyn always looked like she was missing something, a cape. Almost like they toy designers had not been watching the Masters of the Universe cartoon and paying attention to how the characters looked.
So it was time I put that right and made a cape that matched the look in the cartoon, but also the style of the toys.

Lot of people don't realize Evil-Lyn's wand glows in the dark, even the toy pkging oddly made no mention of it as a selling point. I stumbled upon it by accident as a child.

Nice touch. An alternative to the pen cap for the neck clip, you could use a 3D pen to create the clip, (if you happen to have one - they come in very handy). Also, you could sew a hem at the bottom of the cape and slip in a chenille stem or thin piece of wire so that the cape can be posed and made to wrap around her legs a bit. Would give the fabric a more weighted look.

I just used the Batman cape from the "Batman"/"Batman Returns" figure that has the cape clipped on at the wrists and when the legs are squeezed (in the classic Kenner "power action" style), the arms shoot up outstretched to the sides, and the cape is "fanned out" (to replicate the gesture from a scene in one of the Batman films with Michael Keaton in the cowl). Conveniently, the cape is already black. :-)
As you pointed out in the video, Evil-Lyn's collar nicely accommodates the little "C-clip" inside the cape to clasp around the figure's neck. Since it gets stretched out over time, the longer it's on Evil-Lyn, as long as you have no intention of returning the cape to Batman (as it would just keep falling off), then it's all good, and works rather well.
Even the "points" on the cape, most recognizable as a "Batman cape", works well with Evil-Lyn, who, as a sorceress, probably associates with bats and other vermin anyway, lol.
So, save yourselves a lot of unnecessary work - find a Batman figure with the "power action" feature that makes him spread out his cape, and just use that. Or, if having the cape clasped on a tthe wrists is not important to you, ANY black-costume Batman figure will do, really. The "cape spread" figure's cape just comes with the little clasps that fit on the wrists.

Using a Batman cape was exactly what I had in mind. Sewing is a tedious nightmare, especially for dudes. That's WAY too much painstaking work for such a simple fix.

The reason for why the figure didn’t come with a cape was likely due to the Filmation cartoon debuting after the toyline and choosing to add that detail to the character which would logically cause some inconsistency with the Mattel toy.

Dave, I love this video! Thank you. If I can find a couple of Origins Evil-Lyn figures, I'm gonna open one and try to make her a cape, just like in the Filmation cartoon. I'm kinda surprised Mattel didn't do this for the Origins line. No matter ... your video is a terrific inspiration, and the final product looks amazing.

I honestly never cared for MOTU figures, until I started watching your channel. They first came out, when I was 12, so I had already lost interest in stuff like this.
Now, at 48, I enjoy watching you fix these figures and customize them!
Also, you might want to invest in a thimble. Makes sewing much easier and safer.
    Anyways, great work, as usual!

Another thing that bugged me about that figure was that, on the cartoon, she was normal flesh-tone, but the figure is bright yellow, and, like most MOTU characters, there's a lot of flesh on display, so it's hard to hide. But yes, the lack of a cape is puzzling.
Did you ever consider using 'O' rings of the right diameter, and cut into a 'C' to form the neck piece? I'm sure they'd be stiff enough. It's just a thought.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  4 роки тому +1

I don't think an o-ring would have enough grip. But it might be worth a try. The pen tops work really well, so I will stick to that.

Just curious: did either of your Evil-Lyns come with the glow-in-the-dark wands? It's a feature I didn't even know about when I had my Vintage Evil-Lyn, and it seems there are both GitD and non-GitD versions, but it's not immediately apparent until you charge 'em up and get 'em in the dark.
