  • High Red Blood Cells (Polycythemia) Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur)
High levels of red blood cells, a condition known as polycythemia or erythrocytosis, can be caused by a condition known as polycythemia vera, or it can be a consequence of environmental (high altitude) or pulmonary diseases (like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD). In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of having too many red blood cells and why those signs and symptoms occur.

Good grief, I’ve had almost all of these symptoms for eight years! I’m bloody, scabbed and scarred from scratching. I can only see well about half the time. Tinnitus began way back then and never stopped. I have extreme feeling of fullness in my upper abdomen. Breathless, blackouts, and chest pain - all my symptoms have fallen on deaf ears, though I’ve been diagnosed with full body neuropathy. The doctors call this Idiopathic and refuse to try harder to find the cause.
I’m unable to function normally and have been nearly bedridden all these years. Right now, I have some energy, but if I get up, I can’t do anything before I have to sit or lie down again to avoid passing outs. When I stretch, which I have the constant need to do- I pass out! Every time.
Most of my symptoms fit really well with Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy, but Polycythemia produces similar symptoms and the blood not getting where it needs to go is an issue. As soon as I stand, I get a warm feeling in my legs, some weakness, then can follow the feeling of a full warm pressure of blood in my head and arms, settling into my chest, then fading over the next thirty seconds when I sit. I can simply not try to describe my many weird sensations and issues to my doctors anymore, but will try to get them to listen and test for Polycythemia. I swear they’ve marked my chart with “difficult patient” or something like that. 🙄

Have you considered donating blood? I have heard that it can help with these issues. Never mind the doctors, they are so narrow minded. We need to be our own doctors and trust in our experiences. Good luck!

I understand. When i was 42 i didnt have an accident, travel on a plane and i walked 1hr every day that year. I had a dvt that caused my leg to be over 100cm round and had multiple pulmonary embolisms in my right lung. i was never given a diagnosis. Round 45yrs had symptoms but never really took notice as they would come and go. Now 2024 this year after my 2nd stroke this year at only 51 they gave me a secondary diagnosis at E.D. for polythycemia. It was primary diagnosis for the stroke that evening. My G.P said lupus on appt G.P, he wont even look at polythycemia on my discharge papers from E.D yet I've had most of the primary symptoms. Many doctors will not even know that polythycemia and lupus can coexist. My test said SLE Normal lupus, so I'm thinking we'll ok that means I don't have lupus? I had never seen the word polytycemia till I saw my discharges with that word in march with my 2nd stroke.. I've had to read up on the MPN's because no one is listening. So honestly I'm just going to let it run its corse as there is no cure and the G.P acts if he could care less. So I just take my 150mg of blood thinner twice a day for rest of my life and that's that.🤷‍♀️

Thank you for this comprehensive starter. This condition needs more publicity. I suspect that many sufferers die undiagnosed.
My very first symptom was cold feet. They did not feel cold to me, my wife mentioned the fact repeatedly. Now I have severe neuropathy in my feet. Took several years to diagnose polycythaemia vera, all it took was a blood test for another problem.
My brother has haemochromatosis, his appearance is strongly Scandinavian ( Scots ).
The most effective pain relief for me is asprin. Definitely take asprin only under medical supervision. Do not hesitate in seeking a second opinion if you have doubts. Putting up with the problems nearly killed me.

I have secondary and still have not found the root cause yet. I wish you would do an update on this video explaining the difference between primary or polycythemia vera versus secondary and when you discuss secondary, can you list the majority of the underlying causes? And what a patient needs to do in order to determine whether their primary or secondary, etc., I’ve already joined Cheryl polycythemia support groups and have gotten a wealth of information but I think the average person that just got diagnosed would be very scared and need to know lot of things so that they can pursue an appropriate diagnosis so that they could get an appropriate treatment.
