I did something similar. I have the ozark trail dark room tent which also blocks out uvs. I took it a step further and bought a sliver reflective tarp from harbor freight and threw it on top. It made a huge difference in addition to an already dark tent. I also seen so many campers put an ez up or canapy on top of thier tents. That green house effect on tents is no joke. It's hotter inside than outside if you don't use those methods.
I like. For next camping season Im thinking I will get one made too. The heat coming thru and the uv that makes you tingle makes it cloudy day or evening use only
Great idea, i bought the cabelas version of this made by clam and the roof was gray on top. It was miserably hot inside during the day. I ended up returning it as the cabelas version does not have the connecting points for a rain fly or shade anyway. Love the easy setup but that was my deal breaker being so stinking hot.
FYI: Be sure to subscribe to the channel! It's finally warm enough to get out and do some camping where I live! I'm going to be making a series of follow up videos on this Sun-Fly! Be sure to comment what you want to see more details of! I'm already planning on d the following: 1. Details of construction and sewing. ua-cam.com/video/lArVJgmV3rg/v-deo.html 2. How it's held up for me thus far and over the entire camping season this year. ua-cam.com/video/lArVJgmV3rg/v-deo.html 3. I got a thermometer. I'm going to be making a video showing how hot the tent gets WITHOUT the Sun-Fly and then how cool the tent stays WITH the Sun-Fly on. 4. How well does it protect you from water? Does it double as a rain fly if you seal the seams? All these things and more that you guys want to see are coming up this year! Subscribe and ring the bell so you don't miss anything!
Just step on the fabric at the base of the zipper. Your foot keeps it taunt. Don’t step to much and rip zip wall fabric. Makes One handed operation easier. Good tip on the boating shop!
Thanks for reaching out! I had a local place here where I live that make custom boat covers help me make my brainchild (the Sun Fly) become a reality. :) What I did was just purchase the Rain Fly from Clam and the boat cover place used that as a pattern for sizing. I would imagine you could do the same thing yourself...but I have no pointers for you since I hired professionals to do it for me. :) I purchased the mylar on Amazon. Here's the link to it: amzn.to/3EeQUKL Thanks for your interest and for watching!
This is great and hopefully you can profit from it, if that's what you want, but I am surprised from a numbers of other reviews, as to what people expect from a glorified tent...during the heat of the summer. Good grief, buy an RV if you want it to be 65 degrees during a 90 degree day.
Question regarding setup. Did you pre-attach it to the roof part, so that when it opens it's already attached? I think this is a great idea that I can do myself. I already purchased 3 side panels, so I can probably just make 2 more from the Mylar to Reduce the temperature. What do you do regarding bugs? Bugs love to fly inside my tent, no matter how I try to seal it.
I do not pre-attach the Sun-Fly. It's separate just like the rain fly. The tent won't fit in it's bag with the Sun-Fly on it. Best of luck with your project! As far as bugs go, I really haven't had issues with them. I just make sure to keep the screen for the door zipped closed as much as possible. And then I did get the floor for my tent. That way if I'm camped on weeds or grass I'll install the floor and that keeps the bug in the ground from coming up in the tent. Between those two things...I've had zero issues with bugs getting in the tent!
Thanks for the video. I have the Clam Sky Camper, it's the shelter that has the screen as the roof and a separate rain fly when needed. I was thinking of adding the Mylar material onto the rain fly and use it as needed when wanting more shade. I was wondering how the Mylar product was holding up from use in the sun and rain and if you had any problems with degradation from the elements. Another question I have is, has the material where pieces were sewn together held together well and how did the Mylar material where the thread was sewn in hold up, did it make the material more susceptible to tearing or noticeably less durable in any way that you could tell? Thanks again for the excellent video and great idea to add to the Clam shelter.
Thanks for your questions! To be 100% transparent with you, I was able to take the Sun-Fly camping about 3 times last fall before it got too cold to camp anymore...and my first camping trip of the season is happening later this week! YAY! (Stay tuned for a new video on this that I'm going to make while out this week.) Anyway, I feel I haven't had a chance to put the Sun-Fly through all of it's paces and test it's full durability in all kinds of weather. So I can't speak authoritatively on everything yet. However, with that said, my Sun-Fly has so far has held up extremely well. It's incredibly thick, so it should last a ling time. Because it's so thick, it can be a bit of a challenge to fold up by yourself. Two people make it much easier. But I love how heavy duty it is because it doesn't flap around and make noise with every breeze. There are no signs of degradation yet. I haven't had any issues with the seams tearing or anything. However the company I had sew it for me did an outstanding job, and made sure to sew it very well. Persoanlly, I think Clam's rain fly would tear before this heavy duty mylar would if it's sewn correctly. Be aware since you have the Sky Camper that you might need an extra rain fly for rainy weather if you sew the mylar to your current rain fly. I have had my Sun-Fly go through one rain storm and while it shed 99% of the water...there is water that will drip occasionally through the seams. For me, that's not a big deal because I have the Camper model and have the full roof. But for you, you'll want to have one rain fly that doesn't have the mylar sewn to it so you don't get wet. Maybe a seam sealer would work...like I said...I haven't worried about that for myself. Thanks for watching the video! Consider subscribing because now that camping season is ramping up I'm going to be making a bunch of follow up videos on this!
Hey Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate that. Yes I was contemplating getting a second rain fly and attaching the Mylar to it, (maybe I'll try and seal the seams to see how that works, although we rarely see rain when we camp....I know I probably just jinxed us!)then I'll always have a back up rain fly. I just subscribed and will be looking forward to your other videos on this. I'm hoping this Clam shelter lasts quite awhile, it seemed pretty expensive but does appear to be well made, guess we'll find out
I did not test using a thermometer…but I’ll have to do a follow up video on that. Good idea! What I can tell you is that once the fly was on, the temperature inside the tent felt the same as when I was sitting in the full shade of a tree. So ambient air temperature…instead of getting the greenhouse effect and having the inside of the tent be hotter than ambient air temperature.
Sounds like you understand that Mylar reflects light and heat...so rather than using it to contain light (with plants) or contain/reflect heat around someone's body (after an accident) I'm using the Mylar to reflect the light and heat from the sun away from my tent.
@@theresatrickforthat Thank youuu for answered my question, and make that point on clearly of confusion. Because I read a comment in Amazon about Mylar; saying the contrary. Do you have a 'solid' door on your Clam? It does not appear they manufacture a door, but I could be mistaken. Thanks.

Where did you order your Mylar from
To get it that big?
I got the roll of mylar from Amazon. It came 4' wide X 100' long. Then I had it sewn together to fit the tent correctly.
Any measurements and ideas for making the mylar top. Also where to find the mylar.

How much .Dean
Has anyone looked at a way to lock the center hub so it can’t collapse with high winds. Please don’t say “pole”. Thanks
I haven’t personally looked into that. Sorry about that! Thanks for watching!
I use a ratchet strap to tie the top of my Clam to the roof of my trailer. Keeps it from collapsing in the wind and from the weight of rain water.
I have the gazelle g5 gazebo. It has a lot stiffer poles and the wind has never made it collapse. Not even a good rain or hail storm.
Where did you get the sun blocker from ?
I made it! Links in the description to help you make your own or order one direct!
How much did they charge you to cut and sew it up?
Couple hundred dollars.
