    I would love to do something but with the practices that enphase has been doing lately, I just can't justify enphase. Enphase is locking down their protocols so that you are REQUIRED to have your equipment connected to the internet and use their cloud services to control them and they are trying to justify it as security. Security is airgapped control systems for your home. There is nothing to say you cant connect the system if you need support, but forcing owners to keep it connected either all the time or at least to get their "token" is security joke. There should always be a 100% local option for command and control on things such as this. Security means not trusting anyone, even the manufacturer and giving them access only when approved and monitored by the owner of the system.

      So far my inverter produces power without being connected to any of the gateways, etc. but there are a bunch of monitoring and smart features built into it that require the gateways, that’s for sure. Thanks for watching!

    • @robertkluttz8313
      @robertkluttz8313 13 годин тому

      @@theresatrickforthat That is the entire problem that needs more of a spotlight shone on it. Industrial control systems would never be forced to be online so why is a consumer device not afforded the same level of security? Cloud features are nice, but should never be a requirement. An industrial control system would be laughed off the planet if they told the industry that it has to be connected to the internet (I stress internet and not network). A sandboxed network requirement is understandable, but never an internet connection. Zero trust is understood to be the most secure framework for security. That means not even trusting the companies and only opening communications channels to them when there is a documented need, then closing it again after that need is resolved.

    Is the contactor a double pole or a 1 1/2 pole (it looks like a 1 1/2 pole)? If it’s the 1 1/2 pole the shunt will have grid power at all times (when a/c not calling). How does that affect the inverter since it will see that power? Or does it have to see 240v to output? Should you be using a true 2 pole? So the inverter doesn’t output?

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat День тому

      The inverter has to see a full 240V to synchronize to before it will generate power. Thanks for watching!

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat День тому

      So long as you’re only powering 120V with each leg…240V stuff needs correct synchronization of the sine waves to work. Plus, I have yet to find good quality 120V mico inverters that work as well and as long as the tried and true Enphase stuff. Thanks for watching!

    I think this is the simplest way to get your money back on solar versus anything else I’ve seen . Although I have not seen any solar projects that pay for themselves in less than 3 to 4 years. If you assume 250 W produced eight hours and 365 days a year that’s about 730 kWh so the savings will be around $110/yr if you were paying $.15 per kilowatt/hr, which I am paying $.12 in Florida. So if I did the project in this video it would take almost 4 years to pay for itself even assuming $.15 per kilowatt hour. It’s a long time for your money to come back on something that may have an issue during the four years.

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat 3 дні тому

      Yeah, your ROI will totally depend on a zillion different factors. Mine suddenly seems to be going to pay for itself faster since my utility is proposing a 30% rate increase! Yikes! Small scale solar like this can really help insulate against that. That’s a nice feeling to have as well. Thanks for watching!

    I'm going to try this with a window unit.

      Be sure to involve a licensed electrician! What you saw in this video is very dangerous and for entertainment purposes only.

    You would need 10 banners to run the AC on a hot, bright day.

    This is a really good idea I’d just install a break in between like so you could shut off that circuit to the main panel during the day that’s free power

    I also wonder if you'd be interested in another experiment? Many of us have time-of-use plans with tiered demand charges on top of that. If there was a way to have one of my home's coventional AC compressors be inhibited from running when the total home consumption is already over 6Kw between 4pm to 7pm Monday -Friday, but only inhibited when the total home consumption is over 7.5 Kw at other programmable times? I need something like a programmable smart relay that 'listens' to a current sensing loop. But i havent figured out how to do it. It could save those of us in Arizona $1000 per year, easily.

    I'm confused how the contactor is only taking some power from the solar micro inverter and the rest from grid. Is it because the power inputs are wired in parallel, so voltage is constant while current differs? And how does a contactor isolate from grid? Its just a switch that passes power when engaged, isnt it? I feel really stupid. I know some basic electronics, but apparently not! And how are they phase matched? Would this increase your home's reactive power consumption? Im lost here. Please do a follow up. I e been needing something simple like this forever, but thought it was impossible without tons of expensive electronics.

      All your questions certainly deserve some more study for you! But between the Enphase inverters and the contactor, the setup works pretty well! Thanks for watching
