Love my clam! I am a mosquito magnet, so I need a place to be when camping. Two hints I have for shorter person setup of this tent. First I stake down one corner to pull against so I’m not dragging it around the campsite 😅 pop open two sides and then the roof, if you leave the roof till last you may not be able to reach to push it up. 😊thanks for the great review. PS I also like the side panels, you can put up one or more, great flexibility.
Loved your demonstration and we too camp in our Sienna mini van. Just bought a 11.5 pavilion clam with panels attached. I love how you made it look so doable to put up. 12:51 Love it thanks so much! Going check out your build!!! Have a wonderful day!
Hi Feels! Thanks for the good wishes. I just checked out your channel, and it's bringing me right back to when I traveled India 20 years ago. Those roads up north! I prayed for my life when our bus leaving Manali had to back up to let another pass along a cliffside road. Be careful out there!!
Got back yesterday from my very first camping trip. I went to the Garden of God's area in Shawnee National Forrest in Southern Illinois. Found a great spot to camp in. One of the things I learned is that a Clam Shell will be essential and it will be my next purchase. I'm sure there will be lot's of bugs every place I want to go too!! Thank you for posting this!
I appreciate the detail in your reviews! As I travel solo, I purchased the 6x6. I haven't needed it yet, but as I will be camping early in bug season this year I am sure to use it lots!
New sub, loved this video, it answered my questions about the Clam. I'll be starting my SUV conversion in a few months, so I'm about to start binge watching your build videos. Thanks! ☮️❤️😎
Hammering stakes is awful, I bought several 9 inch hex head lag bolt screws so I can just Drill them into and out the ground with a rechargeable drill. WHAT a help! I’m mostly in the desert and sandy or rocky soil I never have any problem, get my popup shower tent up and down in no time :)
Omg, CaSun! I might have to try that b/c yesterday our Clam caught some strong wind and we were staked into sand. 😜 It got uprooted and it was okay, but what a pain in the butt. How do you handle ground that's super hard?
@@TheVanThatGotAway Ground that’s really hard would be like the wood these pointed lag bolts sink in to, the threads will just pull the screw into the ground. And what makes it so much better even is that if it sinks in wonky in one spot just reverse the drill to back it out and try again a few inches away.
Hi Leese, That's brilliant! The hands are still in a questionable state. They both function but not to their greatest ability. I'm still in wait-and-see mode. Thanks for asking.
Thank you for your thorough review, setup and insights. Just replaced our 15 year old screen house, damaged by wind. It had attached wind/privacy/rain screens which was one of it’s best features for Pacific NW camping. I ordered the Clam Pavilion, the largest unit, because it has the attached wind/privacy/rain screens. The box arrived and it’s enormous. Will unbox it for first set up this weekend. I have some concerns it’s too large, but we’ll find out soon enough. Good to know there may be a rain fly accessory to consider. Does your 9 x 9 fit over a typical public campground picnic table?
I always think of those factors as well. I probably wouldn't want to go bigger than this 9x9 for all those reasons. Thanks for taking the time to say hi!
"Handyman!" Phun-Knee! 🤣 I have seen several UA-cam videos for SetUp. I believe yours is one of the best, if not the Best!. 🎉 And, YES, I did Subscribe&Like! Blessings*SharonZ WA
Seems like a good purchase. All the a lá carte items (panels, bathtub floor, etc) are dollar-daunting but the setup is so easy, so there’s that. Really great review and demo, as always. DIY Waterproof the existing storage bag for the Clam (or almost any fabric). I have been doing this with old sheets to use as tarps or flys. Let me know if you want details. Being able to easily and cheaply make ANYTHING waterproof has been amazing.💦
I love it so much. Great idea for the one with small car. Can you share where did you purchase the one holding the canopy on your car roof? I really appreciate it.
Very much, although, putting it quickly away in rain once. I broke several rods from the sockets. I used glue for metal. So far it's holding. It's easy when done According to instructions.
I had the 6x6 and I threw it away. It was hard to pop the roof up. I am 5’6 and just pushing up the middle to pop the roof was impossible without trying to hold down a side as well. It got a hole on one of the corner top edges where the pole goes. That didn’t help. Take down was easier than putting up. I just thought it would be easy up and down. Not so. Once up it was great to sit in. The tight screen keeps it warmer inside than the outside. It held up great in heavy wind, even with the side walls. If there are two people this would be easy to put up.
Thank you for another great video. I love the Clams, but am not ready to invest in one yet. We purchased the Kelty Sideroad Awning. It doesn't have screens and sides, but it is also more compact, light, and easy to set up. We were using it on multiple vehicles too. The Sideroad handles wind really well too. Kelty has a lot of quality shades , awnings, and tents as well a other outdoor gear. Thank you again for the review of your setup. Safe travels.
@@TheVanThatGotAway we have a Jeep Patriot, Toyota Sienna and a 1995 Pleasure Way class B van. It can be used on all 3 vehicles. I use the Jeep on solo trips, but will likely sale it soon because it has over 118K and is not as dependable as I would like.
Thanks for the review and tips on the cover!! Genius :) I still have the small Clam on my list. But honestly right now I'm on the move just about everyday, so not best for right now but maybe later in time.
Thanks for this great video. I have a brand new Clam that I haven’t used yet. I’m wondering if you treated it in any way, like waterproofing and seam sealing.
Hi hello! - thanks for your review, especially as you've been using it for a year. Are you considering buying the wall covers and/or fly or does a tarp work just as well?
Hi Jaycee, You know me... I was already thinking "How can I just make my own wind panels?" But we haven't really felt we NEEDED to have panels or the rain fly yet. We spend most of our time in the shelter when the weather is nice 🙂
I used a tarp once on my 6x6 Clam Traveler. It was just the right size so I was able to very neatly lace through its grommets and through the pull loops midway on the Clam’s sides so it fit real snug like a laced up sneaker.
Hi...just wondering if you have ever used a propane heater or propane fire pit inside your clam. I was thinking maybe on a low setting it wouldn't be too hot to melt the fabric. Any experience with that? Thanks
I got the 60x84 so it was extra long on the end. We just fold over the extra and it keeps the rain out very well. Thanks for asking! Are you feeling DIY-ish today? 😄
We leave it tied down and staked on the inside for rainstorms. No problems. But if the forecast is for a powerful storm, we just take it down. Why risk it... Do you have a shelter you use currently?
With out the walls, the Clams hold up really well in wind. They have to be staked down. A note, I don't own one, but camped for over a week in January with a group and there were 2 Clams.
Nope, worst investment ever. When it rains it becomes a sweet box due to having to put up the side panels to prevent the rain from dripping inside. Yes, the Roof is smaller then the diameter of the outside wall and thus water will fall into this so called cover.
Hi PJ, Thanks for checking in. I understood that the Clam itself isn't rainproof, but you can buy a rain fly (or put up a tarp.) We haven't since we don't rely on it for rain protection. Have you used the fly or tarp, yourself?
I am in a wheelchair so most screen rooms do not work because the lip on the bottom you can’t drive a wheelchair through them. So I have been seriously looking at purchasing a clam. Thank you for your review. 🚐❤️👍🏻
