I love the actual song. Being able to watch it being performed is something else entirely, though, I guess. It really nails home the complexity of the music for me when it's visually constructed, being able to see all their parts layered over each other. They all go into the zone at one point or another, where they're all telling different sort of "stories" at the same time, putting them one on top of the other to create this beautifully complex picture
One part will capture the intensity or drive, another will convey the longing, or yearning, and yet another the hope, and in the end you get something so detailed it's almost an entity unto itself, a message so complicated that you have to dig for the truth hidden under it all, and no one ever really agrees what it's about, it's so subjective. I’ve never been a huge fan of TOOL but I’ll give them credit where credit is due, they did some really intricate and complex creativity with their album Lateralus
Last year I saw Apocalyptica in concert playing Metallica songs on 4 cellos. It's amazing how well metal songs render to cellos. This performance is also pretty good. It gave Lateralus a touch of Scottish folk sound.
Mr. Wolfe, YES! Let's "Imagine" like John Lennon asked us to and Maynard reiterated...if we had virtual reality situation (with a blank slate, clean, white room) who would we be, how would we behave, what would be important (without all that we know because of family friends, constructs, paradigms we bought into and deep conditioning that is either self inflicted, deep rooted or both..No hunger, no greed, a brotherhood of man...the purest form of love potential in an unconditional, abundant way allowing for the deep respect and honor of the heritage of being a HUMAN.
The same heritage that runs through every animal today, traced back in an unbroken chain of living cells directly to a common ancestor). And how would we relate that importance to the live we lead now? (I just had to close those parentheses for ya, it had been sitting open for a year) While I am a fan of stripping away ego, I think if we just live in a blank plane, it would be hard to realize that the Vienna Philharmonic or the London Symphony Orchestra would be better than a midi. Hell, without establishing the depth and breadth Tool, this would just be a forgotten noise attributed to our birth, doomed to never be recognized and simply be relegated a sign of schizophrenic delusions when your brain tries to index when it happened and makes a mistake because the memory was in a time where you had no concept of time. We all come from that blank place, but we learned to take the good with the bad and make the most of what life puts before us and we grew up. The brotherhood of man is forged in understanding we all have the same struggles, the same needs, and the same origin. That origin is universal, it is the blank unknown that you describe. While we may have taken a few thousand years to travel to where we are now, all of our consciousnesses had a refreshing dip in the common blank, stress free, womb (unless you had a twin that tried to absorb you or a flood of toxins). Once we knew hunger, we understood the benefits of greed. Once we understood we could rely on family and friends, our greed changed to mutually beneficial ambition, as we constructed our system of mutual support. That blank slate creates the paradigm of taking advantage of generosity by creating a disconnect between our individual selves and the knowledge that we are all just pieces of our common ancestor. The motivation to disregard the system and it's fellow members is driven by that universal, unconditional and pure form of love: self indulgence through personal advancement. I'd say the only reason we have a sense of brotherhood is because we stepped outside that blank animalistic state and recognized each other as brothers with a shared origin and shared future. What you really should be imagining is your role in advancing the brotherhood of life we share, if you feel like it is an advancing pace or if it's going sideways or even regressing, and how you can change your role to progress life to what you would consider "better". Do we have reason to believe we should start new lineages on the moon or Mars or Venus? Do we have a duty to propagate the life that may exist already in the corners of our solar system, and if so is it because it is more worthy of its place, is it because we may benefit from the variety and eccentricities and harness it for our advantage? Can we be satisfied just introducing the building blocks of life that lead to humanity and letting a separate wholly new yet distinctly related form of life take over? Does wiping out huge swaths of species matter when what's left is always going to fill in the gaps eventually? Should we stop advancing programming so we can be assured Ai doesn't replace humanity or should we usher in a new form of life that is completely different in hopes of coexisting, even if that means cutting our branch off and allowing more discreet life to take advantage of the new balance? There is a lot to imagine going forward, and little reason to imagine hypothetical impossibilities. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of a universal blank slate being drawn out, where competition is introduced gradually at a pace that all of humanity can relate to. I've always thought we should just convert Australia into a "blank slate" like educational system and ship all the kids there until they cross an arbitrary threshold into responsibility where they can be assessed and placed in a position that reflects their talents and preferences. That just seems too daunting to implement or even define. Tl,dr: Yes, I'd love to hear this fleshed out into something more complex like a full orchestra. If the three cellos and one drum set sound this good (call it VHS), the original variety of instruments sound amazing (blu-ray), the improvement of complexity (resolution) to 100+ performers on 25+ different instruments along with maybe a chorus would be "holy shit" indeed (3D 36k), even a chamber orchestra would be wild (4k)
Nah, that's all instruments. It's like a kiai. When you bring your body into it, it makes a noticeable difference in your playing. Like how people tell you to smile or laugh so you will feel less bad or angry or whatever. Most notable musicians will sway or move their body when they play. It's a physical manifestation of the music that makes its way back into the way you play. I'm sure there are more scientific reasons behind it, but as a musician myself, I can say that it just happens, and it's an obvious difference in sound if someone is just sitting there like a rock, or is actually swayed by the music.
GettingFatFitter i know, i am a musician myself as well(bassist, drummer and guitarist), but every cello player i've seen just goes crazier than usual (and i don't blame then, the cello does make a great sound.)
With that bad boy between your legs you can't tap your foot like you normally would/could if you were playing other instruments (like guitars), hands are busy, head ends up going spastic instead. Pretty sure I've still got brain damage from my cello-playing days.
there's just something about playing the cello that makes me want to dance along while i play! it's fun and also something i can't even control, nor do i have a desire to haha. once you learn the cello you lose all control of all motor functions aside from your hands LOL
I love seeing people play these large, beautiful, classic instruments and just headbang like nobody's business. This was fantastic and I loved every second of it.
Even if you don't like tool you have to appreciate that each and everyone apart of this performance poured their heart and soul into it. Amazing cover!! Well done 😃
This was incredible. I loved it! My comment is this: the camera spent 90% of time on the guys. The talented and lovely lady was amazing also. And percussion was quiet and understated. Maybe by design? Maybe not. I, for one, love aggressive drums, is all. The live version of BSG Orchestra's "Black Market" is a fine example. 3 drum sets pounding away. It's awesome. But nevertheless, this was also awesome.
Just seen Tool perform a profoundly perfect mind blowing show at little ceasars arena in Detroit Michigan. Man Our seats were perfect for all the senses. I'm certain it changed my life. This is pretty impressive as I grew up playing 1st string violin.

flip it on its side, cellllloooo, you have a bass.
Haha! Although, I hate to be the nerd, but actually the range is more similar to a 7 string guitar ;)
Hate to be the movie nerd, by that was a School of Rock reference, if I am not mistaken.
Yeah, it was
school of rooock 😂
YES
8 yrs later and was BLESSED BY YOUR COVER thanks
Man they really captured that essence of that song. Lovely work I really liked the emotion they put into it.
My heart has just exploded, that was breathtaking!
Wow literally brought me to tears singing along with that guy. It wasn't only his heart in it, that mans SOUL was in this
Bravo!
I am a hugh Tool fan and this is one of my favorite songs. The way they covered this tune might just actually be the best version i have ever heard. I would have loved to been there for this. Makes me appreciate the song even more.
Literally brought to tears by that guys passion and love for what he’s producing
Revisiting this after many years, still gives me an overwhelming warmth as I watch it. I long for the day you come close enough for me to see a live show.
I love that the lead guy knows all the words
Maybe he has heard this song before idk?
Yeah, pretty obvious which member of the band suggested covering this tune lol.
Shout out to percussion for several moments of impressive fills , with a great time. Danny would be proud.
Wow!!! I lost count of how many times this made the hairs on my arm stand up. This is an insane performance!
Best string cover of this song I've ever heard. The lead phrasing is a lot closer to Maynard's vocals than others. Well done!
I wasted ten minutes of my life watching this, and I loved every single second of it.
Daniel Green I don’t know man, I’d rather says we’ve all been given a treasure for 10 mins. This was in no way whatsoever a waste of time.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No, this is not waste of time. They did an amazing job. I wonder what the members of Tool would think. Especially Adam Jones since he played violin when he was younger.
I love this video! I just wish UA-cam would quit interrupting it with a commercial. I would rather watch two commercials before the video starts than to have music interrupted!
This is the worst!!!
It ruins the whole experience.
so dope... tool is genius.. covering their stuff is not an easy task
No it's not. Tool are master musicians. Anyone who can cover their songs and do as good a job as these musicians, needs to be commended. Amazing.
WITH MY FEET UPON THE GROUND
I LOSE MYSELF BETWEEN THE SOUNDS
AND OPEN WIDE TO SUCK IT IN
I FEEL IT MOVE ACROSS MY SKIN
I'M REACHING UP AND REACHING OUT
I'M REACHING FOR THE RANDOM OR
WHATEVER WILL BEWILDER ME.
WHATEVER WILL BEWILDER ME.
AND FOLLOWING OUR WILL AND WIND
WE MAY JUST GO WHERE NO ONE'S BEEN.
WE'LL RIDE THE SPIRAL TO THE END
AND MAY JUST GO WHERE NO ONE'S BEEN.
SPIRAL OUT KEEP GOING
SPIRAL OUT KEEP GOING
SPIRAL OUT KEEP GOING
SPIRAL OUT
KEEP GOING
The lyrics vidoe says i move myself between the sound, what version is the correct one?
@@itsberzerk9279 Definitely Lose
The drummer does a wonderful job in the final third of the piece. Absolutely brilliant. ~Xander
Who else feels like all of them were committed to this?
Your mom definitely feels that way
This piece of art needs no explanation 🙌🏼, everyone is awesome...dummer nailed it
Wow, this is beautiful. I truly appreciate the emotion these musicians are putting forth.
the facial expressions make it way more intense, haha
I wish I could like this video more than once. The talent and passion of this group is so captivating.
Not only is this a great rendition of an absolute masterpiece, but you can also tell they're enjoying every second of their performance. Amazing.
I’ve never been a huge fan of TOOL but I’ll give them credit where credit is due, they did some really intricate and complex creativity with their album Lateralus
Whatttt??🤨
Last year I saw Apocalyptica in concert playing Metallica songs on 4 cellos. It's amazing how well metal songs render to cellos. This performance is also pretty good. It gave Lateralus a touch of Scottish folk sound.
I have chills in my whole body when I listen to this. I can't help but listen to it every time I see it
I'd love to hear the BBC Orchestra play this track - can you imagine?? holy shit.
Mr.
Also the thought of an orchestra where everyone just played Big Black C... BBCs would be quality entertainment, if nothing else.
The british broadcasting corporation does not deserve to lay its repugnant hands on this divine symphony.
This is truly amazing, I'm literally blown away by this... Or should I say, I lost myself between the sounds. Fan fucking tastic guys.
This almost brought me to tears, there is so much strength and emotion in this. I love the original, but I think I might love this more
Everyone here thinks the cellos are cool, and I'm sitting here like 'That's a pretty good drummer'.
Snoop Cheesus Agreed.
Yep. Same.
So There I Was Is that a Rosetta Stoned reference?
Danny Carey is the original bands drummer. Just as good. Probably better
tool's drum lines are complicated right?
when you learn to play a cello, you automatically lose all control of your neck and head while playing.
xD
Or you do it because it just fucking hurts to play the cello.
This sounds like something from the Witcher. Imagine Geralt slashing through ghouls with instrumental Tool in the background!
Wow...sumthing that I would say also my friend.. spiral out!
This is beautifully orchestrated!! This is my favourite Tool song. The emotion and appreciation of the song is expressed beautifully! I love it!
I love how the cello almost sounds like maynard's voice even just like him at times
I love seeing people play these large, beautiful, classic instruments and just headbang like nobody's business. This was fantastic and I loved every second of it.
They're so passionate and it was so beautiful I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out . Dedication to music is a true happiness
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm watching this on repeat. I never cried to music before. Not like this. Beautiful.
Even if you don't like tool you have to appreciate that each and everyone apart of this performance poured their heart and soul into it. Amazing cover!! Well done 😃
One does not simply cover Lateralus…OMG, they seriously covered Lateralus, and it’s absolutely amazing! BRAVO!!!
I saw them 3 months ago too. It was PERFECTION. I love seeing orchestras playing Tools music. It's so freaking beautiful. I played 2nd violin in high school. I would've loved to see we could've played Lateralus. It is such an epic song. Wow 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The drum section from 5:38 to 7:00 is one of my all-time favourites and the drummer has done extremely well. Bravo!!!
crash cymbals sound amazing in this recording.
Lukas T was thinking the same. And that sweet little ride x
Gonna be honest with you all, I've never heard of shredding on a cello before but this stud just invented it @7:30 and invented it with authority
UA-cam is sticking 2 commercials into this musical greatness. What sacrilege!
Dude, I expected something really good, but this surprised me and got me the chills
Honestly this cover made me had goosebumps all over my skin and I cried with joy; as a fellow cello player and a fan of Tool, I'm in LOVE WITH THIS! Thank you so much for making it happen.
I wish I could find the arragement sheet of this song because I've been looking for it for so long.
I'm amazed by this. Just...amazing.
Loving there enthusiasm for the song, wish the guy had a mic to sing it aloud
I wish the recording had more attack and loudness for the cellos :(
I gotta agree. This is amazing, but right at the peak, it just doesn't pull it all the way in like the original. Close. Very respectable attempt.
That's a cello for ya. I think using violins maybe with cellos in the background would sound better.
Yeaah mmi felt the same.....
But this is not bad.....
It will be much better if they had a lot more attack
