Something I noticed while doing research online is that the USB Out on the Yamaha MG10XU is 15dB quieter than the Stereo Out. Apparently Yamaha has acknowledged this to people asking them in customer support. I am using a Shure SM7B + Cloudlifter and noticed that the Monitor sound was reaching 0 on the mixer, but was 15dB too quiet when recording/using OBS. The solution to this for me was buying a 2x 1/4" to 1/8" cable, and routing from the Stereo Out ports on the mixer to the microphone jack on my PC. Same exact settings on the mixer and computer (except now Level Stereo knob was at unity), and it was 15dB louder, and sounding much better. Hopefully this helps anyone still struggling with being too quiet!
That isn't my experience at all. With a digital signal, zero is zero. If you have -18 on the console, you'll get -18 in your DAW. In my experience, people who complain about a quiet Yamaha MG10XU are simply not using enough gain.
@@kettnercreative Hello Please read this - I just checked and -18 on the console over USB does not come out to -18 ( at least for me in OBS meter) like many people have said the USB seems to be -10 db or so quieter for some reason. Can you try to look into this further and find out why Yamaha does this? It would be very helpful to see if these is a fix or why Yamaha chose to do this. Thanks for all the great content!

Hey guys just to follow up on this post in case it helps anybody - I figured out two important things: 1. 0 on the mixer is actually equal to somewhere around -18 in the digital software ( The reason I understand they do this is because most of the time you want your 0 to be around -18 in your digital because you need to leave some "headroom" in digital because of you go over 0 digital it will clip so this makes sense. So on the mixer I believe PEAK = 0 and 0 = around -18 or so in digital. The 2nd thing I noticed which GREATLY fixed my issue with the sound being about 10 db quitter when using the USB is that the Line out on my Gaming PC ( Asus motherboard) is actually Professional level Line out so instead of going into the -10 line on the mixer ( which was making the signal quitter because this is for non-pro equipment like your iphone etc) I just needed to go into channels 1 - 4 on the mixer because those are Pro Line level just like the output on my asus mobo so I now get the correct sound level it is 10 db louder. I hope this helps!
Please consider the following. I've had this mixer for a while and I've learnt so much from you, so thanks. I'd like to share with you that the USB output from this mixer IS actually quiet, even with proper setup as in your video, but I think this may just be a Windows compatibility issue. You're using a Mac so your results are understandably different. I tried everything and it's still quiet. Ultimately the fix that worked for me (amazingly well) is to connect the mixer to the pc via an interface (I use the Presonus Audiobox with a DI box). Lastly, you seriously DO NOT need a cloudlifter with this mixer. I have the dynamite stick by SE and don't use it. Julian Klaus has a video demonstrating why it's not required with preamps like this. I hope to hear your comments on this. Thanks for the great content.
I've been trying to figure this out for almost two years. I've always had to boost my audio through VoiceMeeter by 12dB, but this method fixed it. Thanks so much!
It's a common complaint of this board - you did a great job explaining each variable and the proper settings / techniques for the hardware - for those who still feel the signal is too low when recording into a DAW, try running "normalize" on the track (especially if the recording is clean to start with)
Hi I too going through the same problem. You have to increase the gain & volume to the peak level. The quality of USB output is always good compared to Line level input. Great video as usual Jordan! Cloud lifter cost more than the Yamaha mixer...it's probably less expensive to use an additional mixer board or an external soundcard.
Yeah, depends on what you're doing. I believe a mic activator introduces less noise than an additional mixer would. Really depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Hi I faced one problem...can't hear the karaoke track in GarageBand...but I can hear my vocals through my earphones plugged in Phones jack in Mg10xu.... kindly suggest
Hi! I have two questions. 1. Let's say I'm using an SM-57, I assume I wouldn't need a cloud lifter at all right? 2. If I use the EQ, turn on the mixers compression, and add a hall reverb, to my vocals or guitar, when I record via usb, will it also record the EQ, compression, and reverb? I read someone say that they had reverb on and only recorded a clean signal. Thanks in advance! Great video! :)
Hi Jordan - quick question - so I have a Shure MV7X and I turned the levels up all the way and a bit of condenser. I can finally hear in my video camera recordings my vocals but the digital keyboard I have plugged in, I can hardly hear it at all, I have it plugged into my headphone jack on the piano and then plugged into the "left" line of line 9....I turned up all the levels but I still can hardly hear anything..do u think if I get the red and white wires and plug to the back instead it may help? I honestly can still get a decent recording because the mic picks up the ambient sound of the speakers from externally anyway, like it would an acoustic piano, but I'd like to make some nicer recordings through audacity where I can just have sound recordings....who knows tomorrow when I try that the levels might pick up better since it's not the phone, it's gonna be to my laptop and I can raise the level to that line on audacity..
Great Video! I have followed all these steps, but still need to boost about +5 in software in order to get the levels that I want in OBS when using USB I have noticed however that when I keep all the settings the same, but use Line-In to my PC, the volume is much higher (15db or so). Is there a reason that the Line-in would offer such a higher volume than the USB? I find myself using it over the USB input which is slightly annoying, because I bought the mixer mostly for its USB output!
If you need to boost the gain in OBS, I would just boost it on the channel strip instead (if you have the option). Line level of the mixer is boosted a little bit +4dBu so it makes sense that it's a bit louder. It's also effected by the master output (bottom right) so if you turn this up/down it will make a difference as well.
@@kettnercreative Thanks for letting me know about the 4db line boost. I didn't know about that! I think after a bunch of testing, I'm probably going to end up returning this mixer and going with the Scarlett 2i2. I don't really need this many inputs for my use case of live-streaming, and I've heard nothing but amazing reviews for the preamp inside the Scarlett boxes. In your experience, would the Scarlett 2i2 be able to deliver higher volumes through USB than the Yamaha? I know the Yamaha is obviously more fully featured, but just in terms of input volume and quality I think the Scarlett may have it beat. I can do other processing and EQ in software
@@DaveChurchill If you're looking for a silver bullet with the Scarlett, I don't think you're going to find it. The Scarlett has a noise of: -128 dBu The Yamaha has a noise of: -128 dBu EXACTLY the same noise. The Scarlett has a gain of: 56 dB The Yamaha has a gain of: 64 dB On paper, the Yamaha has more powerful preamps and the same amount of noise.
@Kettner Creative Thank you so much for the explanation! This information is helping me understand things a lot better. I have a couple more questions for you if you have time. If not, I understand! 1) The line out has +4db, which you mentioned before. So when I boost the gain so that the USB output matches the level of the line out, I notice that the USB sound on my PC has var less noise. Could this be because my motherboard sound card's line in is just noisier than the USB input? 2) I followed your exact instructions (in your streamer setup video) with an SM58, however I need to speak about 8 inches from the mic due to my desk setup. Because of this, I need more gain than you have in your setup video for USB output. When I have the mic in slot 1, and set Gain 1 and Levels 1 on the board both to 9/10, I still need about +5db in OBS to get to usable levels. However I also found that I could get more 'gain' on board by turning up each of the 3 EQ knobs equally. Do you recommend people use the EQ knob gain 'trick' or adding gain in software? 3) I may have to end up returning the Yamaha anyway, due to physical space requirements. Do you have a recommendation for smaller audio interfaces which offer similar db boost / usb output? 4) Is the +64db what you get from the Gain knob only, or is that the sum of Gain, Levels, and EQ knobs being turned to max?
Hey great ViD man!!! can I use the cloud also for my hs8's & Yamaha subwoofer HS8S 8 to reduce that occasional hum? or should I use a Di Box? I have just upgraded my studio thanks!
I own this mixer and have been recording live shows with it. My question is would you follow this exact same procedure for adding guitar, drums, keyboards, bass inputs, etc.? Would you want all of these separate sound sources to consistently hit the unity mark on the USB output, or would you need to compensate for additional sound sources by turning the gain/volume down slightly on all the channels to keep it from being too loud?
JOrdon what a marvelous personality you have!!..hooked to your videos.. .Question: if usb output is quiet on yamaha then can i connect xlr output of yamaha to xlr input of my steinberg audio interface and then i connect usb of audio interface to computer...will that solve it ?...thanks

@@GullySyde28 For me the Analog works good but I only use it for Speaking with my RODE NT1 Mic and I havent tried any Instruments. It's Connected to my PC's Line-In of an ASUS B450 F GAMING STRIX Motherboard Soundcard. Make sure that Level Stereo at bottom right is not set to High because that's what controlls what's sent outside of the Audio Interface to your Soundcard in your PC. Not sure with Instruments but you may want to Enable PAD for the Channel of your choice at the MIC / LINE -> Pad 26db
what mixer/audio do you raccomend with a shure sm7b to have a good signal? i was tempted to buy this mixer buy i'm curious if there are alternatives to this and not get the CL, thanks.
I inserted an external guitar boost pedal into the mixer(fx send) with a lot of output gain, so I apply the output signal from the boost pedal to the aux button of each channel on the mixer, this gives me more gain without too much noise and with appropriate signal level to the usb output. However, I agree that there should be a simple way to adjust the usb output signal on the mixer itself or via yamaha's own software.
I was having the problem described in this video and I discovered that if you plug my microphone into the Zoom H5 and run a line out of the Zoom into the MG10XU channel 5/6 then that would help people hear me better in video conference calls. Is this what you're asking about in your question? How do you use your Zoom with the MG10XU?
To remedy this issue for me, I started using the Line in option and in windows I select line in mic version over usb. I had to have gain and level pretty much to max when using USB and I was using the NT1. But simply going to line in, i need no gain boost at all and don't even need to hit the triangle on level and still sounds good
Hello, I had a live stream of 4 musicians and had problems with the sound. The musicians have connected all microphones and instruments to their own mixer and leveled them for the room. My sound engineer got the line output via XLR on Zoom F4 and checked it with headphones. Then I have an XLR-USB adapter on my laptop with Wirecast Pro for livestream. In the live stream, the sound was partially overdriven and distorted with loud sounds. I have now bought a Yamaha MG10 XU, what is the best way to close the line input for livestream. 2 Question: Wireless microphones and MG 10 XU 3 Question: If I use different micros (with +48 V and without +48 V), there is only one + 48V switch for all 1-4 micros) 4 Question: Delay and MG10 XU for the various wireless microphones? Thank you in advance
to answer your question about the +48v, be sure to check the manufacturer suggestions about sending +48v to these microphones that do not use phantom power. The sm57 and sm58 both have transformers inside the handle (you can search google to see this) and this transformer will block DC voltage (48v). They are safe to use when 48v is activated for condenser microphones. I would check to make sure your microphones can handle 48v safely before turning it on.
What about if you’re not going out through USB? I have a 10G on the way because I’m using my Focusrite and a DAW (Reaper). Same process basically? Level to zero on the Yamaha board then use the Focusrite to adjust peaks to about -18 to -12 within the DAW? After all, you wouldn’t want to hit zero within the DAW because then you’re clipping, right? Thanks!
Hey, that's a wonderful review. I have a question regarding Stereo Out. I'm using a 6.35 mm to 3.5 mm cable for UA-cam live streaming (from my smartphone) and there's ridiculous amount of background noise coming. I've plugged in a Shure dynamic microphone, yet too much background noise. What should I do to reduce it?
Could another solution be connecting the Stereo Output to the computer with a Stereo 1/4 Jack to 3.5 Jack cable (if we are not using this solution for a minus mix) to have control over the Output volume?
MG10XU Question? Why when I turn down the white fx knob on a channel, does it cut out the audio completely? It doesn't seem to work w/o an effect and I can't figure out how to turn FX off. I've never been able to get this mixer to sound right.
I have a Yamaha AG03, i have a really low USB output, i asked Yamaha about it and they advised me a cloudlifter, except i also tried a jack microphone (which doesn't need a cloudlifter) and the problem is really from the audio interface itself, do you have any advices ? I already tried everything and I'm worried to fall in a replacement of product loop (replacing 517144288252 times the unit)
My problem is that if I turn up the gain too much it clips/peaks. This happens with mic (Behringer1800S) and guitar input (my pedal chain can get me really loud along with a regular amp) I record everything to Ableton Live and then have to use Utility or raise clip volume by about 11 to 24dB depending on what I'm recording. This method works for now, but I think I'll just have to switch back to a normal audio interface and use this mixer for live events.
Mine clipped/peaked when mic audio goes too high also and I never use the USB option. I use it for karaoke or DJ'ing weddings. I've tried multiple microphone sets and it still clips. What's the deal with this?
I do live sound with mine and if I set my level and gain like you do, it would squeal LOUD. That said, I notice the activity light on my mixer never gets above -10. Any advice?
i have a question, how if in same time the speaker output is used for sound in room/ hybrid meeting, is 2 mixer needed?, of only 1 mixer: sound for zoom is good buat for room to louder, thank

I've had this mixer forever... And I've had this problem forever! I even got a DBX 286s Preamp and processor. It does all the heavy lifting but the dang usb out is so quite on the mg10XU that even when I set me levels right at 0DB it comes in peakine at -18 dB before you start to hear distortion if you go much higher. This is a problem when I am streaming but also need to be heard on discord. I have tried using software to boost the input digitally for programs like discord but it's a pain and hard to monitor.

Not really. Most outboard preamps will output a line level signal. An inline preamp (Cloudlifter, Fethead, Dynamite, etc.) will output a mic level signal.

I’ve been doing streaming with a live audience also. Last try, I had digital out just high enough (going into OBS, Win 10) by setting stereo out to the max, and turning the volume as low as it will go on my powered speakers. I don’t think this is a great solution, but I’m just a bit above novice level myself. Just doesn’t seem good to have anything set at maximum or minimum. No room for adjustment. But it worked, even though I’ve been told by others that the stereo out volume doesn’t control the USB out. Still experimenting…….
What if the wave form looks good while recording but the playback is still low ? Idk how to fix this issue without using a compressor and the adding gain but then I lose sound quality. When I use focusrite the playback is perfect but then I don’t get the FX like I would if I were using the mg10
Where should the Line/USB switch be set to? Then at the bottom of that strip there's a red switch with TO MON and TO ST, how should that be set. Its not mentioned in the manual.
Thank you so much for the video. So helpful. I do have a question if anyone can help. When I have the sm7b at those levels it also tends to exponentially increase room noise even with noise suppressors/partitions in my home studio. Before, I would adjust the high mids and lows to try and get rid of that but is there another way to deal with that? Should I consider different equipment?

Have you tried plugging the mic into another audio console, it might be the mic? Otherwise, I would try replacing the cables and make sure that all unused channels are turned down, set the EQ to flat and don't turn the compressor past 50%.
Even with everything up, gain volume, and the stereo out which doesn't affect it, all the way high, the usb out is still quiet. It doesn't matter about gain structure, its just quieet.
Is your EQ also flat? Lots of variables here so it's hard for me to guess what you have going on. I have absolutely no problem getting 0dB to my computer with the method in this video.

Sir I when I use USB Interfaces for direct recording in my leptop I got sound in very low voice.... Sir plz tell me how I increase the volume of USB Interface
Can't we all just admit that the output levels on the mgxu mixers are too low? It is too low through usb, and it is too low through the main outs when running to powered speakers. I have been running sound for 30 years and have never seen a mixer that you had to turn up on every fader like this one. That's why all these people VVVV are having trouble. Can anyone recommend a mixer that is in the same price range that has a stronger, cleaner output on usb and mains?
Anyone reading this: CLICKBAIT! You can't change the USB output level per se, you can only increase the general level in the mixer, thus increasing the USB too.
Not clickbait at all. What I'm trying to point out in this video is that there is a 12dB offset between an analog audio mixer and an audio interface. If you're using an audio interface, the peak is 0dB. If you're using an audio mixer, the peak is 12dB. So, with the MG10XU, you simply need to turn your gain up closer to 12dB if you want it to come in at a level close to 0dB on your computer. (of course you will want some headroom), but I'm trying to point out that there is a 12dB offset on the meter between this and a Scarlett 2i2 (for example).
It all sounds logical, except I can not get back signal at strength I'm sending in. E.g. use computer to send sound from PC via USB and then record back via USB. You lost lot of dBs. Simply wrong. Whole point of exchange behringer was integrated Good quality ADC.
Something I noticed while doing research online is that the USB Out on the Yamaha MG10XU is 15dB quieter than the Stereo Out. Apparently Yamaha has acknowledged this to people asking them in customer support. Hopefully this helps anyone still struggling with being too quiet!

I have followed all these steps, but still need to boost about +5 in software in order to get the levels that I want in OBS when using USB
I have noticed however that when I keep all the settings the same, but use Line-In to my PC, the volume is much higher (15db or so).
The Scarlett has a noise of: -128 dBu
The Yamaha has a noise of: -128 dBu
EXACTLY the same noise.
The Scarlett has a gain of: 56 dB
The Yamaha has a gain of: 64 dB
On paper, the Yamaha has more powerful preamps and the same amount of noise.
Thank you for a clear and concise explanation, not one second of time wasted.
Glad it was helpful!
I had to go for Analog with this Mixer their drivers seems totally broken. Audio cuts out randomly with USB . tried with different PC setups and different Windows installs and different cables. Only way i got this one to work has been Analog and skipping Yamahas broken USB drivers. Surprised that they have not fixed this in so many year tbh
hey man i have just brought mine and have had a nightmare trying to record it analoge stereo outs into my Native Instruments sound card, My old Yamaha cfrom 10 years ago is fine but this sounds like dog balls, everythings blown out, after 4 days i have decided i have to use usb, it records really low not sure i can select master output vol, i have to edit the volume up in software, So for you it records well into soundcad? I had my Soundcard imnputs turned all the way down and it was still comming in hot.
Awesome videos and all the explanations are clear and easy to understand! You definitely know your stuff! Keep them videos coming!!
what mixer/audio do you raccomend with a shure sm7b to have a good signal? i was tempted to buy this mixer buy i'm curious if there are alternatives to this and not get the CL, thanks.
If you are using both a dynamic and condenser mics, you would need phantom power but will it effect the dynamic mic or not?
could you use a clean boost guitar pedal to achieve the same result?
I inserted an external guitar boost pedal into the mixer(fx send) with a lot of output gain, so I apply the output signal from the boost pedal to the aux button of each channel on the mixer, this gives me more gain without too much noise and with appropriate signal level to the usb output. However, I agree that there should be a simple way to adjust the usb output signal on the mixer itself or via yamaha's own software.
I love your tutorials, they are great. Have you used zoom h6 in combination with MG10XU?
Yeah, we've used many different zoom devices with the MG10.
But simply going to line in, i need no gain boost at all and don't even need to hit the triangle on level and still sounds good
Please explain in detail how to do this
@@jhavinayak07 mines sounds like garbage through lines im thinking i have a faulty unit, stereo outs come in hot with all levels virtually down
Do you need to install any driver to be able to used it in macbook??
No, it will work on any mac without a driver
Hello, I had a live stream of 4 musicians and had problems with the sound.
The musicians have connected all microphones and instruments to their own mixer and leveled them for the room. My sound engineer got the line output via XLR on Zoom F4 and checked it with headphones. Then I have an XLR-USB adapter on my laptop with Wirecast Pro for livestream.
In the live stream, the sound was partially overdriven and distorted with loud sounds.
I have now bought a Yamaha MG10 XU, what is the best way to close the line input for livestream.
2 Question: Wireless microphones and MG 10 XU
3 Question: If I use different micros (with +48 V and without +48 V), there is only one + 48V switch for all 1-4 micros)
4 Question: Delay and MG10 XU for the various wireless microphones?
Thanks!
Would it help when i'm using a blueyeti? My problem right now is that a high gain introduces more white noise coming from the mg10x itself.
I would use a 1/8” to dual 1/4” cable and connect it to the stereo input (5/6)
Could another solution be connecting the Stereo Output to the computer with a Stereo 1/4 Jack to 3.5 Jack cable (if we are not using this solution for a minus mix) to have control over the Output volume?
I'm wondering the exact same thing
This is such a gem of a video!! Great job
MG10XU Question? Why when I turn down the white fx knob on a channel, does it cut out the audio completely? It doesn't seem to work w/o an effect and I can't figure out how to turn FX off. I've never been able to get this mixer to sound right.
Thank you! Ended up purchasing a mic activator, fingers crossed!
Can you use the Cloud lifter-1 or cloud lifter-Z for a dynamic mic in the 1/4 jack to xlr line 5/6?
You would need to use an XLR input so you can get phantom power.
My problem is that if I turn up the gain too much it clips/peaks. This happens with mic (Behringer1800S) and guitar input (my pedal chain can get me really loud along with a regular amp)
I record everything to Ableton Live and then have to use Utility or raise clip volume by about 11 to 24dB depending on what I'm recording.
Informative video. You know your stuff! Thanks so much. I bought this mixer because of these videos
Thanks! Recordings and live are much better now. Great advice!
oh great it's this guy again
high do u know what I should do if the usb output stopped working. I connected a midi keyboard with the same cables and it worked. my mg10xu doesn't come up in the audio settings.
The foam on the Shure M7B muffles the sound a little bit, thus requiring higher gain setting. If you remove the foam, M7B won't need as much gain.
You are amazing !!!!! love all your videos, after great research im finding all solutions only from your videos...Thank you so much dear...lots of love from India.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Happy to help!
Hello friend, thanks for the tutorial, it has been very helpful, now I have a question, I have a microphone connected to channel 9/10 with usb output, how can I add more volume since when I make the video the volume is only very low if you could help me thanks
You need to increase the gain.
Thanks for your response yeah channel 9/10 don’t have gain so i check with the Bluetooth so is necessary increasing the volumen on the garageband?
Would a preamp be the same as using the cloud lifter?
Not really. Most outboard preamps will output a line level signal. An inline preamp (Cloudlifter, Fethead, Dynamite, etc.) will output a mic level signal.
How can I increase the volume of the USB output on my Yamaha MG12XU mixer when recording or live streaming, as the sound arriving on my computer is extremely low despite being set to STEREO OU?
I take the sound out from xlr stereo to Focusrite - to computer and use Streamlabs. This solves the low sound from the mixer.
Can this compete with dedicated interfaces like Scarlett 2i2 when it comes to recording quality? Can i use this for serious recording?
im having trouble i had a old yamaha going into native intruments worked fine for years, get this thing and nightmare levels blowing out the stereo outs are so badf i wonder if i have a faulty unit. I record with USB and its so quiet i have to turn it up in soundforge
Rode NT1 + MG10XU; reaching 0 (cero) in the yamaha console but audacity shows me -18dB (connected to pc through USB)
If I was to have a track playing while singing through the mic and monitoring the sound through the headphone, will the voice be overpowering to the track or vice versa through the recording with the suggested settings?
Depends how you mix the levels. You can adjust the level until everything is balanced to your liking.
Hi when I try to record using mg10xu connected to a mic and my laptop, and then use logic and set mgxu as input and output I am getting my logic instrumental as an input again. How to record only from my mic but still can hear the instrumentals on my logic pro using headphones?
We can't record in a phone without the laptop with software??
Thank you! definitely helped me get more out of my board! using the mg10xu and a blue ember condenser mic

Thank you very very much! I realised many mistakes during my work. Thanks for your job, fo your video.
Thanks a lot for your hard work on this issue,it will be better if compare with also recorded by condenser microphone.it will help me to judge for purchase of condenser mic or dynamic mic.
On the Yamaha MG10XU demo video that we did, we used a condenser and dynamic mic.

Please make a video how to livestream in youtube using this mixer Yamhah MG10XU
I just filmed it. We will have a video on how to live stream with the Yamaha MG10XU on UA-cam in a couple days.
What about if im using speakers for a live event , plus streaming at the same time . My audio still too low (microphone) on my Facebook streaming!!! I don’t want to bump my audio because the feedback on the live speakers. Any advice for this ?? Thanks!!
Need more info on your setup. What are you running the microphone into? Are you using ANY compression or other similar dynamics modifying efffects?

Have you tried plugging the mic into another audio console, it might be the mic? Otherwise, I would try replacing the cables and make sure that all unused channels are turned down, set the EQ to flat and don't turn the compressor past 50%.

Even with everything up, gain volume, and the stereo out which doesn't affect it, all the way high, the usb out is still quiet. It doesn't matter about gain structure, its just quieet.
Is your EQ also flat? Lots of variables here so it's hard for me to guess what you have going on. I have absolutely no problem getting 0dB to my computer with the method in this video.

What have you tried so far?
Go to the Yamaha website and download the driver update for your mixer.
NOTHING ON HEADPHONES! WHY? WHEN I PLAY BACK I GET NO SOUND FROM GARAGE BAND ON EITHER IMAC OR MACBOOK AIR.
It all sounds logical, except I can not get back signal at strength I'm sending in. E.g. use computer to send sound from PC via USB and then record back via USB. You lost lot of dBs. Simply wrong. Whole point of exchange behringer was integrated Good quality ADC.
