I remember going into my brother's save file and having his hero eat a butt load of crunchy chicks, beat up villagers, marry someone and then sacrifice her to Skorm. Yup, was pre internet time for me, got it on CD by recommendation of a friend. Absolutely enjoyed it. Actually this is the first time I hear about this overhype by Mollineux. My only review source back then were PC gaming magazines and the one I read usually only made tests of finished products. Got good reviews there too, so I`m really surprised xD. Maybe a good prove, that hyping can do more harm than good sometimes. I mean Vampires Bloodline f. ex was brilliant. Once you get it to actually run by patching. As much as I enjoy the Fable, I am glad that they made/released Lost Chapters, simply because there was so much more content. especially the extended ending. The original last fight was good, and challenging, but not epic. The Dragon boss fight, while oddly easier, still felt bigger and more epic. Not to mention all the additional side quests.
Okay, but the whole acorn thing, I think, could have actually been implemented- and relatively simply. Basically: Make a spot in the world TO plant an acorn, and once the player does then it accrues a “growth point” after each quest is completed in the game; and after X amount of ‘points’ are accrued (behind the scenes) the acorn/trees grows into a new stage of its development. Naturally, one potential drawback is that you may not be able to see the acorn grow fully if you plant the acorn too late in your playthrough (since there wouldn’t be any more quests to complete after a certain point, depending on if you’re playing The Lost Chapters or not). You COULD tie the acorn to the clock, much like how the crime fine system is, and thus allowing a player to see the full growth. But then the progress of said growth would most likely be exponentially slower and players may give up on waiting for the growth before it’s finished.
The game was missing some of the big features Peter talked about, but it did have neat little aspects that you just didn't see at the time. If you ran into a man carrying a box, it would destroy the box and have an effect on item availability in shops.
I remember loving this game as a kid, with one exception. The fact that it had things you HAD TO DO in the MQ. The concept was to be who you want to be, and you still find yourself locked in to a pre-written story. That still bugs me in games to this day, so whenever i play an open world game like Skyrim I fondly think back to playing Fable and being annoyed with that limitation for the very first time. It's a cute little game!
@@MrCreed145 I love open world games, what I most want in a game is to get lost in a fantastical world. Just camping out in the wild, treking for days through dense woodland or coming across a forgotten ruin. I hate it when games ruin this with fast travel and map markers. To me the whole charm of playing a game is to actually be in another world. Dress for the weather, eat to not starve. That's when I'm having a great time.
i remember fable. i have some nice memories of playing it! luckily, around the time i did play it i was a completely unaware child who knew nothing of the promises that wr made that never made it into the game XD
14 year old me was so stoked that I didn’t even notice how overblown the hype was. It was a fantastic game, still love it. It was very unique for its time and in many ways still is. It’s not what Was promised, but I still think it’s one of the best RPG series ever made.
Oh man, that part where Peter Molyneux talks about the co-op (Or the lie of it, rather), he is interviewed by Giga-Games, one of the earliest televised groups in Germany that covered video games, the two next to him specifically being the Console guys. I even recall it aired from 10pm to 12am, and caused em many school mornings of being tired after sneaking to watch those guys. Childhood legends
He might have been so old that he considered playing on multiple consoles and TV’s while sat next to your friends as “co-op” or he’s a pathological liar. Not sure which.
@@dscvered Well, he has stated hating chickens because his first words were Clucking noises from being raised on a farm. He seems like a mroe Tragic Hideo Kojima. Kojima had so many plans, dreams and ideas. From CDs smelling like blood if they get warm, new systems not even modern, current cutting edge AI could handle, but found a way to do the best with his dreams. And Molyneux..he just lied about what he WISHED was within his games, what dreams he wanted to have about it, instead of accepting what was possible or not.
I never heard of the multiplayer side being promised, but I do remember all the hype about how open the world was, and how your choices were responsible for how that world evolved. I also remember realizing that it was mostly a bunch of lies, but I DON'T remember being all that mad about it. I had fun with the game regardless, and played it through a couple of times.
I love the Fable series, I still own the Game Informer Fable 1 Magazine where they had so much concept art and hype up stuff that never made it in the game but it still was cool to see retro behind the scene artwork like an ape outfit or such that some eventually got turn into dlc for the Anniversary remake.
I got my hands on this game without knowing anything about it, and it was my favorite game ever since, you could say it defined my childhood. I had no idea about the promises Molyneux supposedly gave, I just didn't think the game could've been any better than it already was. It was truly magical.
I can't tell what's funnier about this video. The editing, the David Attenborough style commentary or just how good bad this game is. Whichever it us, I've subbed through laughter induced tears.
I think that over time we've all dealt with plenty of games where the dev's promised things that they never delivered, and a disappointed playerbase was the result. But I think Fable defined the genre, if you could call it that.
Peter Molyneux is pretty notorious for overhyping his games. If I'm not mistaken, this sort of thing has happened on _literally every series_ that he has been a part of, though the Fable case was the most egregious.
The Hero Save function is broken if you want to cheese it. Once you get to the arena, if you hero save right before the last phase and keep reloading, you can basically grind your way to max stats pretty quickly. There's also the one quest early on with a key right in the first area, so you can hero-save scum your way up to the max 20 keys and open every chest you ever come across as soon as you get to it.
I'm playing the entire series for the first time, I finished 1 and just started fable 2 yesterday and it's been fucking fantastic. Honestly, sometimes it's better to wait for a game to age, like a fine wine.
The game was fun enough, but when you promise big the expectations follow. For 2004, if people didn't know what they "thought" they were missing, the game would have stood on it's merits just fine.
So many promises for Fable that never happened. I still love it. I playing Fable when it came out and loving it and buying Lost Chapters when it came out and loving it even more. Though I do wish all the stuff that was promised did come out.
curious if you where playing the original or the lost chapters version, been years since i played ether but the extra end game content had extra armor sets and such, honestly worth the play through if you enjoyed the original
Peter often announced features that had never even been discussed with the dev team. He basically announced his design ideals as if they were a done deal, when they were really just a "wouldn't it be cool if..." design idea.
I can honestly say this was one of the first video game I ever played on the OG Xbox other than halo two, which came with the Xbox. It was such a fun and fascinating experience for my first RPG. I still couldn’t believe the amount of things I was allowed to do in that game. Wild Knights of the old republic. Will probably go down as my favorite RPG of all time. Fable is a very close second.
I played through the original a few times back when I played a lot more. I got the anniversary edition awhile back, played a little bit and really haven't touched it in a long while. Just can't seem to get into rpgs like I used to. Great upload, and thank you. It's nice to relieve a great game.
Fable series is a rare gem that needs to be remastered with the latest graphics and updated with some quality life additions and bigger maps, etc, but keep true to the original fables which in my opinion Fable series is one of the best RPG ever made...
The hype around this game was insane. This was at a time when video game magazine subscriptions were still a thing and I remember waiting every month for more screenshots and details, still playing Morrowind to get my RPG fix and bide time. There were a lot of unfulfilled promises, but to me it was still fascinating to see your character change over time, become grotesque or heavenly, become fat or muscular, and to watch his hair and beard grow. Those features were groundbreaking at the time, and those are mechanics we still hold dear today in games like RDR2.
Froggy always liked the spooky parts in this game and never ever did harm to others... except kicking the chickens and the guards 😀 btw there was a kind of a secret quest in one those citys where you can marry the lady/princess if i remember correctly
One of the best games of 2000s I played this in 2006 I think, I wasn't keeping up with news or anything, back then we were exchanging CD's with games with friends and school buddies.
8:45 this (wonderful) edited scene makes me think of the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the evil French dude has a big fly go right into his mouth. It's when Indi is pointing an RPG at the Germans carrying the Ark and is threatening to destroy it. Don't believe me? Look it up!
fable is one of the greatest games ever made. I never knew all that stuff about the hype since I was too young to really follow video game news. All I knew is that my dad bought me this game and it was sick af.
Tragedy + Time = COMEDY! You make even the worst-sounding games seem like such fun! Well, you, and that haunted child. But this actually looks genuinely fun if one doesn't go in looking for something more epic and well-balanced in that Good-Ass RPG-way. It comes across almost like a parody game, at which it seems to be pretty spot-on. This game IS an MST3K-ing of an epic fantasy game--unintentionally, but therein might lie the genius. Though, I think it might lose some of the hilarity with mouth-breathing narrator, as opposed to you narrating. Some unasked-for career advice: GET INTO V.O. WORK! PLEASE! Live MY DREAM so I don't have to nut up or shut up! And also--DIE, WIZARD! DIE, MAGICAL BASTARD!
Despite all the controversy around the game its stood the test of time against many western RPGs as being the game that not only set the standard but literally defined almost every western rpg afterwards. You would in fact find that this game's gameplay and systems all became precursors for many other game's systems, heck even the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt uses so many elements from Fable that its uncanny to think that the games have a 13 year gap between them.
Fable 2 has my all time favorite bit of loading screen text: "Shortly after Jack of Blades was slain by a Hero, the Guildmaster was rumored to be killed by that same Hero. The words "Your health is low" were etched into his forehead." I'm pretty sure I pulled something from laughing so hard after reading that for the first time.
This was a really hard game for me to get in as I was 7-8 years old when it came out - but the rpg aspect and the good/evil mechanic caught my eye since I was familiar with the Knights of the Old Republic light/dark side mechanic. Check out SpiffingBrits video of Fable it’s great
Love the video, also some common misinformation I always hear, some of the promised features was in development but scrapped due to the Xbox not being powerful enough, Multiplayer was scrapped way late in the game that the assets are still in the game’s code, and other assets too, another fun fact, Fable Anniversary was out sourced and began working on an older version, so Fable Anniversary has more unused assets in it’s game files than the PC release of TLC
Fable may not have lived up to the hype, but it did start a series that I’ve adored for years. I’m only sad I no longer have a way to play Fable 2 and 3 since my Xbox 360 broke.
The year was 2000, I was 5 years old. This was the first game i ever played, probably shouldn't have played it, but I did. Never looked back, this is by far STILL my FAVOURITE game.
I remember reading a preview article in an issue of Edge gaming magazine, and getting rather excited until I realised most of the mechanics would be rather hard to pull off on a console with limited save file storage. I was rather blown away with how the endgame missed most the promises - still enjoyed te game though.
i am so happy that in 2004 i had almost no access to internet and knew nothing about the reviews or the overhyping of fable because to me it was an amazing game as someone who came into it knowing absolutely nothing
Me reading the initial claims about the game: "Oh, they sound like something Peter Molineux would say" Video shows Peter Molineux as being the director: "AH! It makes sense now."
I love ythis game so much! it was really one of the greatest PC gaming experiences i ever had and no matter what it will never bee diluted or destroyed from my memory. every couple of years i go back an dplay it all over again.

One of the comfiest game environments ever, the music and towns are so relaxing. I still play TLC on Steam from time to time
Even with all the missing features, Fable was still one of the best times I've had in an RPG.
14 year old me was so stoked that I didn’t even notice how overblown the hype was.
It was a fantastic game, still love it. It was very unique for its time and in many ways still is.
It’s not what Was promised, but I still think it’s one of the best RPG series ever made.
Even the sequels are decent in their own right
I lied to my aunt to get this game as a kid haha. I didn't know about all the fake promises at the time, but gosh darn was this game fun.
As a kid, not knowing English language that well I picked Arseface as my title because it looked like Artificer and that sounded cool.
His other videos are amazing
The music in this game is great. I still listen to "summer fields" from time to time.
The best thing to come from Fable was the people reviewing it in hilarious ways.
It was an absolute master piece for it's time and generation!
Combining spells was fun as hell too… I remember busting out full blown lighting tornados and marvelling at my remarkable prowess.
Peter often announced features that had never even been discussed with the dev team. He basically announced his design ideals as if they were a done deal, when they were really just a "wouldn't it be cool if..." design idea.
Me and my friend played this game so much over the summer years… still remember going back and forth between our houses playing it…. The good ol days
Back in the day, I had such a blast playing this game....
Lady Grey. You can marry her in fable 2 as well, all though she's quite different in that one lol.
I just randomly found your channel and I love you.
One of the best games of 2000s I played this in 2006 I think, I wasn't keeping up with news or anything, back then we were exchanging CD's with games with friends and school buddies.
Fable will forever be one of my favorite series of games ever right next to mass effect
I loved this game; never saw a single ad for it either, just found it while rooting around for something to play on the 360, stumbled on this gem.
DIE, MAGICAL BASTARD!
still one of my favorite rpg games literally "chicken chasssuuuh" rings in my head to this day
Despite all the controversy around the game its stood the test of time against many western RPGs as being the game that not only set the standard but literally defined almost every western rpg afterwards.
The words "Your health is low" were etched into his forehead."
I'm pretty sure I pulled something from laughing so hard after reading that for the first time.
You should do a top 10 list in the future on the Best and the Worst mmo's of all time
P.S you have a good narrator voice
This was a really hard game for me to get in as I was 7-8 years old when it came out - but the rpg aspect and the good/evil mechanic caught my eye since I was familiar with the Knights of the Old Republic light/dark side mechanic. Check out SpiffingBrits video of Fable it’s great
fable and fable the lost chapters are still 1 of my fav games ever ..... all hail arse face
Luckily back then I didnt have time to soak up the hype as it felt we had one epic released every month. Bloody loved this game.
The legend of the chicken chaser.
When I played first time years ago I didn't know that you could change title.
Chicken Chaser!!!! Never forget!!!! Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood.
Ah anything with that liar Peter was doomed to fail.
You got quite a few chuckles out of me from this video. You got a sub
I was 20 in 2004 and i knew Peter was a mad man.. great video brought tears to my eyes 🥲.
Me reading the initial claims about the game: "Oh, they sound like something Peter Molineux would say"
Video shows Peter Molineux as being the director: "AH! It makes sense now."
I want Fable 2 and 3 on PC... I mean, come on Microsoft... WTF.
I absolutely loved fable. It was an amazing game for it's time.
I think I still have the original Fabel in steam Library 🤣 watched my older Brother playd it through :) Master piece of a Game :)
I love ythis game so much! it was really one of the greatest PC gaming experiences i ever had and no matter what it will never bee diluted or destroyed from my memory. every couple of years i go back an dplay it all over again.
Surely the whole ‘watching an acorn grow’ was regarded as accepted as the some sizzle derived to accompany a deftly comprised sausage.
10:20 did not expect to see Giga Games here :D glorious times. Fable was my absolute favorite game back then on the xbox. (along side Star Wars: Kotor for obvious reasons)
