Love this review of this wonderful game! Re: the NPC's "buy a watch" dialogue, back in the olden times before everybody had cell phones that show the time, a common pick-up ploy was to walk up to someone and ask them what time it was, in an attempt to strike up a conversation. "Buy a watch" and similar remarks were ways of indicating disinterest. Source: am really old. :)
I love playing as a malkavian and convincing a guy that he’s a bear and his friends are salmon or an old friend that you are not their missing friend, but their childhood pet turtle
some of the stuff you're seeing was actually added by We5p, a German dude who has spent far too much time saving this game from final death by creating patches that give it stability and add little easter eggs that the original developers did NOT put in the game. If you've ever purchased the game from gog, then you have played the game with one of his patches built in. also, although harley quinn existed only a few slight years before this game did (barely) she did NOT have her trademark two colored hair and schoolgirl outfit at that time, so VTMB Jeanette is the original.
Exactly mate, mentioned the patch by We5p at the end of the vid. That guys is crazy but awesome for the work he put in with this game. Thanks for watching. 👍
I think what truly makes this game so damn fun and memorable, jank and all, is the obvious love and passion that was put in to it despite the obvious lack of skill or talent. Troika, the developer, was rather notorious for having games that were simultaneously incredibly detailed and immersive with excellent stories... and utterly abysmal mechanics that made the games nearly unplayable. Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura was another Troika game that, like Bloodlines, had an amazing story and some very memorable characters and extremely cool and interesting ideas... and utterly insane and hilariously bad mechanics that were both incredibly frustrating yet bizarrely charming at the same time.
It was such a broken, buggy mess, but by the gods, it was a GLORIOUS experience. Been coming back to this game every couple of years for more a decade. Its always a wild ride, no matter how many times I play. Malkavian has to be the most interesting playthrough, I love how unstable they are. Makes for such interesting conversations and I always try for a different ending. And to think, if I hadn't picked up the pre-owned case in EB games in 2007, I probably wouldn't have come across it for a very long time. Probably the best ten bucks I've ever spent. I love that theme music so much, brings back an instant wave of nostalgia every time I hear it.
For me, part of its legendary status is in the fact that it's great despite being an incomplete game. Its failures as a game can all be traced to this fact. The dream of what could have been if only they had the chance to finish plays as much a part as the nostalgia aspect in my book. Hence, the excitement surrounding its sequel. And the bitter disappointment of said sequel's delay. It's almost as if something (or someone🧛♂️) is interfering with its release... 🤔
In 2004, when I was 18 years old (20 years ago... omfg), I moved out on my own with my girlfriend in a shitty little apartment, where I also bought my first desktop PC. I had played the pen and paper Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse games by White Wolf Publishing with some of my friends while in high school, so when I discovered there was a PC game called Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, I was super amped to try it out, needless to say. And this game blew me away, truly. I already had knowledge about the World of Darkness setting and the lore regarding the various vampire clans and some of the backstory about Kindred society and politics, which made the game's plot, narrative, and its characters so much more immersive. I remember there were nights when I stayed up all night at my desk, sometimes skipping work or bailing on plans with friends to spend more time playing. It was in that apartment that I also discovered Elder Scrolls: Morrowind for the first time, having never heard of Bethesda or the Elder Scrolls series. But this game, Bloodlines, really is in a class of its own. I need to revisit this title, especially because I've heard there are mods and an unofficial patch that fixes a lot of the jank that exists in the vanilla baseline game that was released by the devs. It sounds like Bloodlines 2 is trapped in development hell, but if it ever gets released, we can only hope that it has half of the depth, charm, and immersion as this classic title that is loved so fervently by so many, even now, nearly two full decades after it was released.
Amazing review! Love how you manage to make a good, funny review without throwing spoilers everywere. Vampire Bloodlines till this day is one of my top 3 RPG games, playing through the Haunted Mansion while I had 14 years old was so damm Scary...and I think you would love to play as a Malkavian, they have unique dialogue choices through the entire game because they are insane. (even talks to a signpost).
Seeing you doing the dance with the cold, dead stare, I could not help but start cracking up🤣 I just love your humor and I’m new to the channel by the way and I love it
I bought this one off the shelf back in the day. Even though the original out of box was janky, I adored the game. Heck I had to replay it just because a door wouldn't open at the very end in chinatown. If you played the vanilla game you know what door I'm talking about... When it first came to steam I bought it again and tried to play it. The game didn't work. I spent no joke 10 hours trying to figure out how to fix it. I had to copy all the contents of one folder and paste it in another folder just to fix that crashing. But I am thankful for it, and especially thankful to the mod community that made the game even more amazing. This one is a gem and I don't think any large gaming studio today will understand how to make it again.
I love this game. Every few months I reinstall it and give it another spin. It has replayability with different clans. Playing as a Nosferatu makes the game pretty hard in my opinion. Playing as Malkavian and leaning into the social skills is so damn fun, though.
I remember playing this for SO MANY HOURS ^^ Such a good story and so much to explore. Before that I played Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption , which ,allthough cheesy looking, is pretty good. Can only recoomend it.
Best Part about Vandal Cleaver from the Blood bank is that he is voiced by James Arnold Taylor, aka Tidus from Final Fantasy and Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank
this video alone earned you this sub. legend has it, whenever you mention VtM Bloodlines, someone out there reinstalls it. this time it was me. one word of advice: Dont open it.
Ok so I actually watched the review of the hilariously disappointing other vtm game you reviewed the whole time thinking dude "bloodlines was sooooo much better". Lol then scrolling down your channel I found this. I had literally played through every clan and storyline and then some in this game, I even found and ran through the playable dialogue to sleep with Jeannette, then downloaded we5ps pencil and paper mod as I have been playing table top vtm since first edition, literally found and was able to get a signed picture from myspace....lol how long ago was that of the beauty who Jeanette was modeled after, so bro subbed and liked for doing this video such an amazing trip down memory lane. Also like another person commented the haunted mansion in this game for the time was terrifying, too examples the ghost that follows you around in the basement, and the light drop scene in the bedroom and relighting again to spell out the message on the wall. I keep the game on my shelf the physical copy with it's original three install disks lol
Thanks for that mate glad u enjoyed it. Bloodlines is and I think always will be a true great. It’s funny as I looked for a physical copy just to have it. The one u have sounds perfect mate.
The Unofficial Patch needs a bigger mention. Those "History" character traits you spent time on in the character creation screen only exist thanks to the Unofficial Patch. (Not to mention the game is unplayable on most systems without it, and suffers far more game-breaking bugs even if you do get it running.)
Just have to point out that Jeanette Voerman came before the Harley Quinn redesign, and Harley's redesign actually took some heavy inspiration from our ivory goddess here.
One question after all these years is, how did the vamps at the beginning know you were made a vampire at the start? Even is the sire was being tracked, by the people who burst in, how did they know you were being made a vampire rather than fed on?
I did enjoy this game but I found Bound by Flame a far superior experience despite being much smaller in scale. It might be worth having a look at if you enjoy Greedfall.
There is no point in the Ocean House Hotel where you are actually in any danger. Try telling that to the atmosphere, which still gets people who have played the game to Final Death.
Such an underrated, flawed and unfinished game. One I still to this day go back and play it, few games hold up over the years like this one. I know We5p is the main reason we can enjoy the game to this day and we can never thank him enough. Just imagine if other forgotten games had fans continuing/fixing things with them.
Now go replay it as a Malkavian....embrace the madness ;p Poor game needed polish to become a masterpiece, it needed lots of patches, thank god the modders did what the devs failed to do :)
Hands down the best Vampire video game of all time. I really hope Paradox didnt ruin the development of Bloodlines 2. And that whatever studio they replaced Hardsuit Labs with, is actually better and fixes whatever problems Paradox had with Labs version of the game. I think it was mostly the negative reaction of the showcase gameplay and how buggy and trash it looked. But hopefully the story and setting stays the same because that all looked great.

Can confirm, listening to the VTM;B soundtrack will always take you back to these locations.
Omg those dance moves xD and the blood bank guy... had me crying xD

Sounds like you didn't play it with the restoration mod, I really recommend it. The game is Godlike with it installed.

I say if it takes abit longer for a decent complete functioning game
Then a delay is fine. I say let them make the game

time for another playthrough !
Seeing you doing the dance with the cold, dead stare, I could not help but start cracking up🤣 I just love your humor and I’m new to the channel by the way and I love it
Man I hate that hotel and love it at the same time ....still gives me chills
I loved that mission, really set the tone of the game.
Not enough RPGs let you argue with a stop sign.

2:14 could also be a swipe at Interplay, where much of Troika formerly worked.

The storyline holds up wonderfully over the years. One of the best stories in any game. The combat system on the other hand... oof
you can also make your guy GAY lol
