- Former MEP Ann Widdecombe joins Mike Graham to discuss what should be done.
There were 275 arrests across the two days of this year’s Notting Hill Carnival, with 165 arrests on Monday for a range of offences, including possession of offensive weapons, assaults on police officers, possession of drugs and sexual offences.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who oversaw the policing operation, said: “It is regrettable that for a second year in a row, Monday night at Carnival has been marred by serious violence."
She says: "Police generally treat the Notting Hill Carnival with a very light hand. It's rife with drugs and they very seldom take any action in that respect."

The attendants are mainly local the area has changed in the last 30 years or so a lot of the bedsit blocks have been converted back to one house occupied by rich people now, these people are frightened of being victims of the behaviour that occurs now as they more to lose, years ago around there most people were in the same boat, but before that it was teddy boys assaulting black people the original Notting hill riots, i dont excuse the bad behaviour and i can see why certain people want it banned, maybe it is just to big a problem for the police to handle now, or the carnival is to BIG and that it has been let out of control for to long, shame for the genuine carnival people.

The police are outnumbered by gang members 20 to 1 and they still need to get people home safe. If they arrested everyone with a knife there wouldn't be any police left to help with sexual assaults, violence , robberies, burglaries , drunks, road closures, etc.

I’m born and bred Nottinghill. 99% of the people involved snd who attend the Carnival aren’t locals. The residents have always hated it. Most leave town for the weekend. It shouldn’t be in our manor it should be in a public place like Hyde park which is also easier to police.
I am a local I used to support it. I'm done with it. Doesn't reflect the area any more.

On sunday officers made 85 arrests , 11 for sexual assault , 10 for assaulting police officers and 25 for possesion of a weapon .

I think it's time to simply scrap the police force all together and bring in a whole different style of law officers. That are "Judge, Jury and Executioner". Because this current model of a softly approach is not what paying taxpayers want. Because the courts, the lawyers, and police themselves have lost too much support and trust from the public. The warmth and humour that had been a thread through British culture, and was reflected abroad, would not have been possible in a skyline in which church spires and towers were absent. Christianity is after all rooted in love. Ann Widdecombe is right that Christianity is woven into the fabric of society, of British society. But that fabric has been woven over, the skyline pulverised by modernity, the supposedly good majority in the crowds very hard to make out, to see. And the warmth and humour have been swallowed up by grimness. Grimness is everywhere. It’s going to take millions of people willing to speak plainly like Ann Widdecombe for this country to save its soul.
Christianity is not rooted in love, its just our version moved so far from where it used to be u believe that, christians used to ruthlessly persecute non christians, mass immigration wasnt possible unless they massively watered down christianity, which british govs duly did imo.
Well, if it helps you, Christianity is all about loving your neighbour. France had helped settle Spanish refugees fleeing Franco in 1939. Turkey channels the Syrians onto Europe, presumably because there is only a cold house for Syrians in Turkish society, its dear neighbour. Only Germany is friends with both. And Germany is still very much a Christian country. Its citizens’ brass bands play traditional carols in the run-up to Christmas, in the public square of many towns and cities. The increasing filling of bog-standard pop numbers by buskers these days in the days just before Christmas is very depressing, and very telling in relation to the rapid loss of religious cues in our lives now.

Unfortunately there have been many a powerful person in Christianity’s realm of whom it could be said did not have a Christian bone in his body. But let’s tally up all those zillions of bones. On the whole, is it not better that the Philippines is a Christian or Catholic country? If it had been any other religion or Communist, it would not have been so good for it. It’s not so much Christianity having taken over the world as the world gravitating towards Christendom or the Christian West. When Communism fell, many Eastern Europeans could at long last practise their Catholicism or Christian religion much more freely. They had ached for a more religious aspect to their lives. And it was the Christian West that had stood up to Communism and prevailed, in 1989.

What is wrong in schools is they adopt no Christian religion in school and the Church of England clergy adopt any policy is popular today and not tomorrow. I had the Notting Hill carnival at home.I played reggae music, got high ,fought with one of those cardboard cops you see in shop doorways,then stabbed myself.I saved a mint instead of catching a train from Lancaster to London and got the Notting Hill Experience.

My earliest memory is holding my mums hand on one side and a man pulling my mum by her purse on the other hand and my mum asking him to let her get her hand out of the strap, funny but I can't remember having to take refuge in a cellar cos of stones getting thrown at every one. The year was 1976. Not much has changed.
A cesspit of an event
The Met Police are presented with the Carnival and have to make the best of it and Police it with a light touch generally, but always with an eye to controlling the more aggressive areas and participants with a, what should be, zero tolerance.
The Carnival is over (song), or rather this crime ridden mess is no longer a carnival. FYI: In South Africa the assegaai (spear) is still used - it is also on the South African Coat of Arms and on the ANC’s (ruling party’s) flag.
